Healthcare needs and risk in police custody

Thorley, Grace M. January 2017 (has links)
Police custody is an area of scholarly research that has previously been overlooked. Whilst the research and literature regarding this topic begins to grow, there still remains a wide variety of aspects to be considered. Chapter One presents a general introduction to the topic. Chapter Two presents a literature review following a systematic approach regarding the healthcare needs of those detained in police custody. The findings revealed that there is a considerable presence of mental health, substance misuse, and physical health care needs amongst police custody detainees. Chapter Three presents a critique of an impulsivity measure, the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11). The concluding remarks reported that further research is essential in examining the psychometric properties amongst forensic populations. The indications regarding reliability and validity are supportive, although further evidence considering the effectiveness of this tool for decision-making would be beneficial. Chapter Four, an empirical study, examined the prevalence of impulsivity, self-harm, and situational aggression amongst detainees. In addition, the predictive validity of one of the National Strategy for Police Information Systems (NSPIS) risk assessment was reviewed. This study identified that impulsivity traits are highly prevalent amongst detainees (for the non-planning impulsiveness subtrait); for self-harmers, their function of this behaviour was identified as ‘self-punishment’; and 40% engaged in some form of aggressive behaviour throughout their detention. The NSPIS risk assessment has significant predictive value, although with the additional of one Dynamic Appraisal of Situational Aggression (DASA) assessment and the BIS-11 total score, the predictability increases by 21%. A single case study in Chapter Five considers the effectiveness of Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)-informed skills training in the community. This individual displayed borderline personality disorder traits and exhibited self-harming behaviours. The difficulties associated with working with such a client group have been discussed. In Chapter Six, a discussion concludes the thesis.

Aguilera Retamal, Gonzalo Luis January 2012 (has links)

From myth to allegory: a study of the poetry of W.H. Auden, with special reference to the poet's intention

Bell, I M January 1968 (has links)
The more attentively Auden's poetry is studied, the more one critical problem emerges. How can the poet of the "twenties and ' thirties be reconciled with the poet of the last three decades? "We've all got to come to terms with the later Auden" writes Professor Richard Hoggart, but he does not explain how. The man who wrote the pungent early poetry with its constant reiteration of warnings to a sick society that what was needed was " … death, death of the grain, our death, Death of the old gang … " before it could achieve "new styles of architecture, a change of heart", seems an entirely different person from the man who is on the side of Authority to-day; that is to say in so far as Auden can ever be said to be definitely on one side or another. The structures and significance of mimesis in Adorno's 'Aesthetic Theory'

Hooker, Richard January 1997 (has links)
This thesis starts from the point of departure of asking why Aesthetic Theory is difficult to read. In answering this question it is argued that the difficulty of the work is a function of the unusual claims Adorno makes about the relation between art and philosophy, and that the presentation of these arguments exemplifies these claims. This complimentary relation between form and content has implications for the way Adorno can be understood as engaging the idea of mimesis. Aesthetic Theory should be understood as a theory of mimesis in modern art and as a mimetic work itself. Given this idea, the question of the readability of the work emerges as inseparable from the explicit claims Adorno makes for mimesis. If the work ultimately cannot be understood because Adorno does not define his concepts, or it is unexplainable for any other reason, then mimesis will be shown to be untenable. The issue of the readability of Aesthetic Theory is explored in the Introduction through a discussion of issues arising from the recent history of Adorno's reception. Particular attention is paid to the differences between critics who have emphasised the significance of the particular claims Adorno makes against those who emphasise his method. Chapter I rejects this distinction while it argues that the character of Adorno's writing is uneven, that is to say, Aesthetic Theory cannot usefully be read in a uniform way. Chapter I considers different aspects of this lack of uniformity and argues that the identity of Aesthetic Theory as 'philosophy' is often tenuous as it moves in and out of other modes of argument. Chapters 2 and 3 look at different aspects of the identity of Aesthetic Theory as philosophy. Chapter 2 explains the strategic significance of the work as a continuation of a tradition of philosophy from Hegel onwards. This tradition, it is argued, has explicitly understood the problem of philosophy as recognising itself as experience while it attempts to describe experience. Chapter 3 extends this theme into a consideration of philosophical form. If philosophy is understood as a mode of experience then its form as well as its content is significant. Through a consideration of Heidegger and Derrida, Chapter 3 examines the uniqueness of the philosophical form of Aesthetic Theory. Having made this distinction. Chapter 4 reads Aesthetic Theory as philosophical form, describing aspects of it as mimetic. Chapters 5 and 6 then give detailed readings of parts of Aesthetic Theory which are particularly relevant for an understanding of Adorno's theory of the mimetic potential of modern art. The concluding chapter argues that the internal consistency of Aesthetic Theory in its practice and definition of the crisis of mimesis in modernism has significant implications for the practice of art history and criticism of twentieth-century art.

Two Trees

Prosser, Christopher Skinner, 1978- 12 1900 (has links)
1 score (viii, 79 p.) A print copy of this thesis is available through the UO Libraries. Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / The Two Trees is a fifteen-minute musical composition for orchestra. Inspired by William Butler Yeats' poem of the same name, the piece depicts the images described by Yeats' poetic narrative through a double theme and variations form consisting of two contrasting themes that are related, one ascending and one descending. Each theme represents one of the two contrasting sections of the poem and is followed by a set of five variations for a total of ten. Since the rhyme scheme of each section of the poem is divided into five phrases of four lines, each musical variation corresponds to four lines of text. / Committee in Charge: David Crumb, Chair; Robert Kyr; Jack Boss

_____________________________________________________________________________________ / ABSTRACT: This dissertation work deals with the problem the so called instrumental rationality causes to the human liberty, taking in consideration the project of the enlightenment of mankind repressing the inner nature of man, as from Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer, in his Dialectic of Enlightenment . It pursues to discourse on this theme analyzing the possible solutions to the problem, seeking to show the necessity of reconciliation between man, rationality and nature. In order to do so this dissertation presents elements of Adorno’s Theory of Esthetics which demonstrates that in the piece of art and in the esthetic experience, as described by the philosopher, there is an answer to the repression of nature and the possibility of liberty and reconciliation.

Over the last thirty years of his life, Theodor Adorno never stopped thinking about the problem of boredom. For him, to glance over this phenomenon means to perform a diagnosis of the general state of culture, where work, the free time and the cultural objects deviate from man’s emancipatory path. The loss of the ethical content of these three instances leads to chronic deformations on individuals, denying them mainly a meaning for their very existence and the ability of realizing experiences (Erfahrungen). Puts up, therefore, the idea of progress in check. Insofar as in a society that offers all the necessary elements for human emancipation takes the opposite way, it starts to dehumanize individuals in many different ways. Adorno, while manifesting concern about the problem of boredom, points to an unresolved dialectic of progress in the sense of human self-realization being blocked by the process of social integration

This research investigates the level of interference of content and form of the cultural industry in the Pedagogy Course at Unicentro, Guarapuava city, Paraná State, more specifically the possibility of this fact be related to difficulties found by the students in the Didactics subject, during the planning process. The research had as theoretical reference the ideas of the philosopher Theodor W. Adorno about cultural industry, as well as the Brazilian theoretical production which discusses about education in the perspective of the Adornian Critical Theory. The field research is comprised by the application of questionnaires to the Pedagogy course students. The data analysis revealed a strong presence of content and form of cultural industry among the surveyed group. Nevertheless, these are not the only elements reached by the semi-formative logic of cultural industry, once it also extends to the conceptual pair reason and sensibility. In this acknowledged reality, the reason asserts its instrumental aspect and sensibility does not require rationality and cognitive effort. It is recognized that when the aesthetic sense is affected, cultural industry also affects knowledge process. Reflecting on the existence of these dichotomies and on how much they constitute an obstacle to the formation process, the aesthetic education was then emphasized, having as assumption the Adornian theoretical reference. Adorno’s ideas enable the understanding on how the formation process damage occurs, apart from offering parameters that define the essence of formation and contribute to guide the resistance to the semi-formative logic of cultural industry
