Previous issue date: 2015 / The present dissertation analyses the translation of womanism in The Color Purple (1982), by Alice Walker, into its homonymous film adaptation in 1985, directed by Steven Spielberg. The term womanism, although it also refers to the black feminism, relates to a movement that transcends the social aspect; it is, therefore, a spiritual movement, committed to the survival and welfare of all people, independent on race, sex, religion, among others. The novel The Color Purple tells Celie’s story, a semi-illiterate black teenager who writes letters to God, telling situations about her life. Through friendship with other women and, consequently, the discovery of new ways of being and feeling, the character tries to overcome the trauma caused by the separation of her sister and her children, and the physical and psychological rapes she had suffered. In this research, we investigate, specifically, the rewriting of four female characters – Celie, Nettie, Sofia and Shug – since we perceive them as the main representative of womanism in the novel. Our hypothesis is that some womanist aspects, such as religion and homosexuality, were softened in the translation, due to contextual issues, whereas others were emphasized because they were adapted into both the poetics of the cinema of the 80’s, and of the director. As theoretical background, we take Even-Zohar’s postulates (1990), about the polysystem theory, and Toury’s assumptions (2012), which understand the studies of translation emphasizing the cultural factor, and considering the influence that the target culture has on the translation process. We also take Lefevere’s concept of rewriting (2007), which emphasizes the historical and cultural nature of the translated texts. Concerning the translation of literary works into the cinema, we use the studies by Cattrysse (1992), and the considerations of authors, such as Stam (2008; 2011) and Hutcheon (2013), who discuss the relationship between the two language systems. Finally, about womanism, the reflections by Maparyan (2012) and Walker (1983) are critical in conducting the analysis. The results showed that the strategies of softening and emphasis on the translation of the female characters’ womanist traits concern the translators’ poetic, as well as the specificities of the cinematic system. Therefore, in the adaptation, they reflect much more the poetics of Hollywood cinema of the 80’s, and of the director, than the womanism observed in the literary work.

In this work we study the one-dimensional random walk problem as a model to find which
probability distribution function (pdf) is the best strategy when looking for randomly istributed target sites whose locations are not known, when the searcher has only limited information about its vicinity. Although research on this problem dates back to the 1960’s, a new motivation arose in the 1990’s when empirical data showed that many animal species, under broad conditions (especially scarcity of food), do not use Brownian strategies when looking for food, but Lévy distributions instead. The main difference between them is that the Lévy distribution decay much slower with distance (with a power-law tail in the long-range limit), thereby not obeying the Central Limit Theorem, and present interesting properties, like fractality, superdiffusivityand self-affinity.
These experiments, coupled with evolutionary concepts, lead to suspicions that this choice might have been adopted because it is more advantageous for the searcher, an idea now termed as the Lévy Flight Foraging Hypothesis. To study the problem, we define a search efficiency function and obtain its analytical expression for our model. We use computational methods to compare the efficiencies associated with the Lévy and two of the most cited pdfs in the literature, the stretched exponential and Gamma distributions, showing that Lévy is the best search strategy. Finally, we employ variational
extremization methods to obtain the problem’s Euler equation.

From Suffragettes to Grandmothers: A Qualitative Textual Analysis of Newspaper Coverage of Five Female Politicians in Utah's Deseret News and Salt Lake TribuneCox, Holly M. 01 December 2008 (has links)
This thesis examines press coverage in the Deseret News and Salt Lake Tribune of five female politicians in Utah history: Martha Hughes Cannon (1896), Reva Beck Bosone (1948), Karen Shepherd (1992), Enid Greene Waldholtz (1994), and Olene S. Walker (2003). A total of 438 articles were reviewed using qualitative textual analysis. Coverage by candidate varied, though it was not in general overtly biased concerning candidate gender. However, the press did call attention to the gender of candidate and gendered commentary was present. The press also called attention to the rarity of women running for high political office and addressed the ability of candidates to balance the roles of wife/mother/homemaker with a political career. This thesis contributes to the overall understanding of newspaper coverage of female politicians and provides a window into the cultural as well as political history of Utah. Suggestions for further research about media coverage of female politicians are made.

The Walker War ReconsideredWimmer, Ryan Elwood 13 December 2010 (has links) (PDF)
In July of 1853, Chief Wakara's band of Utes clashed in a series of violent confrontations with the Mormon settlers. This conflict is known as the Walker War. Many complex factors contributed to this war. After some earlier violence between Mormons and different bands of Utes between 1847 and 1851, the Mormons continued their quick expansion settling on Ute lands. From 1851 to 1853 Mormon and Ute relations continued to decline as Mormons expanded their settlements occupying Ute hunting grounds. In addition to these land encroachments, new laws were enacted regulating trade between the Spanish and Utes by Brigham Young. The most notable regulation on trade prohibited the Spanish and Ute slave trade. All these trade regulations hurt the Ute economy, particularly the most powerful equestrian Ute band, the Cheverets led by Chief Wakara. In the spring of 1853 Governor Brigham Young ordered out the state militia to arrest Mexican traders and to capture Wakara for engaging in the slave trade. Wakara had previously established a friendly relationship with Young and had invited the Mormons to settle his lands in Sanpete. Wakara had become committed to peaceful relations and cooperation with Young and the Mormon people. Wakara remained true to his desire for friendly relations even after seeing his economic status undermined by Mormon settlers. Young as well was committed to staying on peaceful terms with the Utes. Their followers, on the other hand, had difficulties overcoming the cultural divide. After the murder of a member of Wakara's band in July of 1853 by settler James Ivie, Wakara's band waged a series of raids against Mormon settlements. Wakara himself, however, was not involved in the war and continually tried to sue for peace. The war has been mislabeled with Wakara's name; he was not really involved in the violence. Yet it was indeed a war. The war had a great impact on the Mormon settlers. Settlers abandoned their homes and had to move into forts. For the Mormons involved, this conflict was neither small nor inconsequential; it was a major disruption involving a great portion of the Utah Territory.

Generalized EMP and Nonlinear Schrodinger-type Reformulations of Some Scaler Field Cosmological ModelsD'Ambroise, Jennie 01 May 2010 (has links)
We show that Einstein’s gravitational field equations for the Friedmann- Robertson-Lemaître-Walker (FRLW) and for two conformal versions of the Bianchi I and Bianchi V perfect fluid scalar field cosmological models, can be equivalently reformulated in terms of a single equation of either generalized Ermakov-Milne- Pinney (EMP) or (non)linear Schrödinger (NLS) type. This work generalizes or presents an alternative to similar reformulations published by the authors who inspired this thesis: R. Hawkins, J. Lidsey, T. Christodoulakis, T. Grammenos, C. Helias, P. Kevrekidis, G. Papadopoulos and F.Williams. In particular we cast much of these authors’ works into a single framework via straightforward derivations of the EMP and NLS equations from a simple linear combination of the relevant Einstein equations. By rewriting the resulting expression in terms of the volume expansion factor and performing a change of variables, we obtain an uncoupled EMP or NLS equation that is independent of the imposition of additional conservation equations. Since the correspondences shown here present an alternative route for obtaining exact solutions to Einstein’s equations, we reconstruct many known exact solutions via their EMP or NLS counterparts and show by numerical analysis the stability properties of many solutions.
