Ion Beam Analysis of First Wall Materials Exposed to Plasma in Fusion Devices

One major step needed for fusion to become a reliable energy source is the development of materials for the extreme conditions (high temperature, radioactivity and erosion) caused by hot plasmas. The main goal of the present study is to use and optimise ion beam methods (lateral resolution and sensitivity) to characterise the distribution of hydrogen isotopes that act as fuel. Materials from the test reactors JET (Joint European Torus), TEXTOR (Tokamak Experiment for Technology Oriented Research) and Tore Supra have been investigated. Deuterium, beryllium and carbon were measured by elastic recoil detection analysis (ERDA) and nuclear reaction analysis (NRA). To ensure high 3D spatial resolution a nuclear microbeam (spot size <10 µm) was used with 3He and 28Si beams. The release of hydrogen caused by the primary ion beam was monitored and accounted for. Large variations in surface (top 10 µm) deuterium concentrations in carbon fibre composites (CFC) from Tore Supra and TEXTOR was found, pointing out the importance of small pits and local fibre structure in understanding fuel retention. At deeper depths into the CFC limiter tiles from Tore Supra, deuterium rich bands were observed confirming the correlation between the internal material structure and fuel storage in the bulk. Sample cross sections from thick deposits on the JET divertor showed elemental distributions that were dominantly laminar although more complex structures also were observed. Depth profiles of this kind elucidate the plasma-wall interaction and material erosion/deposition processes in the reactor vessel. The information gained in this thesis will improve the knowledge of first wall material for the next generation fusion reactors, concerning the fuel retention and the lifetime of the plasma facing materials which is important for safety as well as economical reasons.

Personalized Interaction with High-Resolution Wall Displays

Fallende Hardwarepreise sowie eine zunehmende Offenheit gegenüber neuartigen Interaktionsmodalitäten haben in den vergangen Jahren den Einsatz von wandgroßen interaktiven Displays möglich gemacht, und in der Folge ist ihre Anwendung, unter anderem in den Bereichen Visualisierung, Bildung, und der Unterstützung von Meetings, erfolgreich demonstriert worden. Aufgrund ihrer Größe sind Wanddisplays für die Interaktion mit mehreren Benutzern prädestiniert. Gleichzeitig kann angenommen werden, dass Zugang zu persönlichen Daten und Einstellungen — mithin personalisierte Interaktion — weiterhin essentieller Bestandteil der meisten Anwendungsfälle sein wird. Aktuelle Benutzerschnittstellen im Desktop- und Mobilbereich steuern Zugriffe über ein initiales Login. Die Annahme, dass es nur einen Benutzer pro Bildschirm gibt, zieht sich durch das gesamte System, und ermöglicht unter anderem den Zugriff auf persönliche Daten und Kommunikation sowie persönliche Einstellungen. Gibt es hingegen mehrere Benutzer an einem großen Bildschirm, müssen hierfür Alternativen gefunden werden. Die daraus folgende Forschungsfrage dieser Dissertation lautet: Wie können wir im Kontext von Mehrbenutzerinteraktion mit wandgroßen Displays personalisierte Schnittstellen zur Verfügung stellen? Die Dissertation befasst sich sowohl mit personalisierter Interaktion in der Nähe (mit Touch als Eingabemodalität) als auch in etwas weiterer Entfernung (unter Nutzung zusätzlicher mobiler Geräte). Grundlage für personalisierte Mehrbenutzerinteraktion sind technische Lösungen für die Zuordnung von Benutzern zu einzelnen Interaktionen. Hierzu werden zwei Alternativen untersucht: In der ersten werden Nutzer via Kamera verfolgt, und in der zweiten werden Mobilgeräte anhand von Ultraschallsignalen geortet. Darauf aufbauend werden Interaktionstechniken vorgestellt, die personalisierte Interaktion unterstützen. Diese nutzen zusätzliche Mobilgeräte, die den Zugriff auf persönliche Daten sowie Interaktion in einigem Abstand von der Displaywand ermöglichen. Einen weiteren Teil der Arbeit bildet die Untersuchung der praktischen Auswirkungen der Ausgabe- und Interaktionsmodalitäten für personalisierte Interaktion. Hierzu wird eine qualitative Studie vorgestellt, die Nutzerverhalten anhand des kooperativen Mehrbenutzerspiels Miners analysiert. Der abschließende Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit dem Analyseprozess selber: Es wird das Analysetoolkit für Wandinteraktionen GIAnT vorgestellt, das Nutzerbewegungen, Interaktionen, und Blickrichtungen visualisiert und dadurch die Untersuchung der Interaktionen stark vereinfacht. / An increasing openness for more diverse interaction modalities as well as falling hardware prices have made very large interactive vertical displays more feasible, and consequently, applications in settings such as visualization, education, and meeting support have been demonstrated successfully. Their size makes wall displays inherently usable for multi-user interaction. At the same time, we can assume that access to personal data and settings, and thus personalized interaction, will still be essential in most use-cases. In most current desktop and mobile user interfaces, access is regulated via an initial login and the complete user interface is then personalized to this user: Access to personal data, configurations and communications all assume a single user per screen. In the case of multiple people using one screen, this is not a feasible solution and we must find alternatives. Therefore, this thesis addresses the research question: How can we provide personalized interfaces in the context of multi-user interaction with wall displays? The scope spans personalized interaction both close to the wall (using touch as input modality) and further away (using mobile devices). Technical solutions that identify users at each interaction can replace logins and enable personalized interaction for multiple users at once. This thesis explores two alternative means of user identification: Tracking using RGB+depth-based cameras and leveraging ultrasound positioning of the users' mobile devices. Building on this, techniques that support personalized interaction using personal mobile devices are proposed. In the first contribution on interaction, HyDAP, we examine pointing from the perspective of moving users, and in the second, SleeD, we propose using an arm-worn device to facilitate access to private data and personalized interface elements. Additionally, the work contributes insights on practical implications of personalized interaction at wall displays: We present a qualitative study that analyses interaction using a multi-user cooperative game as application case, finding awareness and occlusion issues. The final contribution is a corresponding analysis toolkit that visualizes users' movements, touch interactions and gaze points when interacting with wall displays and thus allows fine-grained investigation of the interactions.

Influence of heat transfer on high pressure flame structure and stabilization in liquid rocket engines / Influence des transferts thermiques sur la structure et la stabilisation de flamme à haute pression dans les moteurs fusées cryotechniques

Ce travail de recherche s’intéresse au problème de la stabilisation de flammes, et du transfert de chaleur résultant, dans les moteurs fusées cryogéniques. La stabilisation de flamme dans un moteur fusée est un phénomène critique, et toute instabilité peut conduire à des dégâts importants, voire à la destruction du lanceur et des satellites embarqués. Les moteurs (Vulcain 2 et Vinci) qui équipent Ariane 5, et la future Ariane 6, utilisent le couple hydrogène / oxygène, dont la grande impulsion spécifique permet, en minimisant la masse des ergols par rapport à la masse de la charge, une meilleure performance du lanceur. Pour réduire le volume de stockage, les ergols sont refroidis à des températures très basses de l’ordre de quelques dizaines de Kelvin. Ils alimentent une flamme dont la température maximale peut atteindre 3500K, générant de très forts gradients de température dans le fluide, et des flux de chaleur extrêmes dans les parties solides de l’injecteur. Pour prédire les flux de chaleur entre la flamme, l’injecteur et les ergols froids, l’approche de Simulation aux Grandes Echelles (SGE), pour reproduire l’écoulement réactif turbulent instationnaire, est couplée au calcul de thermique du solide dans l’injecteur. Cette approche est d’abord validée par comparaison à une expérience en conditions ambiantes, menée au Laboratoire EM2C (Paris). L’interaction flamme-paroi en présence de transfert de chaleur, qui est un mécanisme de base de la stabilisation de flamme, est ensuite étudiée pour différents niveaux de pression. Finalement une configuration représentative d’un injecteur coaxial de moteur fusée est simulée pour étudier la structure et les mécanismes de stabilisation de la flamme, ainsi que les flux de chaleur reçus par l’injecteur, en vue d’évaluer la fatigue thermique du système. / This research work deals with the problem of the flame stabilization in the context of high pressure liquid rocket engines. Flame stabilization in a rocket engine is a critical feature. An instability can lead to important damages of the engine or the destruction of the launcher and the satellite. The engines (Vulcain 2 and Vinci) of the Ariane 5, and the future Ariane 6, use the hydrogen/oxygen propellants. One characteristic of this couple is its high specific impulse. The launcher performance is linked to the ratio of the payload to the total mass of propellants. For volume reasons the propellants are stored at low temperature of the order of a few tens of Kelvin. When injected in the combustion chamber, their combustion releases a huge amount of heat leading to temperature of 3500K. In order to predict the heat transfer between the flame, the solid injector and the cold propellants the Large Eddy Simulation, which allows to capture the unsteady features of the flow, is used in association with a thermal solver for the injector. This approach is validated with a low pressure experiment conducted at Centrale Paris, then a basic 1D configuration allows to understand the phenomena of high pressure flame-wall interaction. Finally a configuration representative of a coaxial rocket engine injector allows to evaluate the structure and the stabilization mechanisms of a cryogenic flame, the heat flux and the temperature of the injector.

Experimental study of the diesel spray behavior during the jet-wall interaction at high pressure and high temperature conditions

[EN] The potential of diesel engines in terms of robustness, efficiency and energy density has made them widely used as power generators and propulsion systems. Specifically, fuel atomization, vaporization and air-fuel mixing, have a fundamental effect on the combustion process, and consequently, a direct impact on pollutant formation, fuel consumption and noise emission. Since the combustion chamber has a limited space respect to the spray penetration, wall impingement is considered to be a common event in direct injection diesel engines, having a relevant influence in the spray evolution and its interaction with both surrounding air and solid walls. This makes of spray-wall interaction an important factor for the combustion process that is still hardly understood. At cold-start conditions, the low in-chamber pressures and temperatures promote the deposition of fuel in the piston wall, which leads to a boost in the formation of unburned hydrocarbons. Additionally, modern design trends such as the increment of rail pressures in injection systems and the progressive reduction of the engine displacement, favor the emergence of spray collision onto the walls. In spite of the evident relevance of the comprehension of this phenomenon and the efforts of engine researchers to reach it, the transient nature of injection process, its small time scales and the complexity of the physical phenomena that take place in the vicinity of the wall, make challenging the direct observation of this spray-wall interaction. Even though computational tools have proven to be priceless in this field of study, the need for reliable experimental data for the development of those predictive models is present. This thesis is aimed to shed light on the fundamental characteristics of spray-wall interaction (SWI) at diesel-like chamber conditions. A flat wall was set at different impingement distances and angles respect to the spray. In this way, two different kinds of experimental investigations on colliding sprays were carried out: A transparent quartz wall was employed into the chamber to, in isolation, analyze the macroscopic characteristics of the spray at both evaporative inert and reactive conditions, which have been observed laterally and through the wall, thanks to the use of a high-pressure and high-temperature vessel with optical accesses. This same test rig was used in the second kind of experiments, where instead of the quartz plate, a stainless steel wall was used to capture the effect of the operating conditions on the heat flux between the wall and the spray during the injection-combustion events and to determine how spray and flame evolution are affected by realistic heat transfer situations. This wall was instrumented to control its initial in-chamber surface temperature and to measure its variation with time by using high-speed thermocouples. Tests at free-jet conditions were also performed in order to provide a solid comparative base for those experiments. / [ES] El potencial de los motores diesel en términos de robustez, eficiencia y la densidad de energía los ha hecho ser ampliamente usados como generadores de energía y sistemas propulsivos. Específicamente, la atomización de combustible, vaporización y mezcla de aire y combustible tienen un efecto fundamental en el proceso de combustión y, en consecuencia, un impacto directo en la formación de emisiones contaminantes, consumo de combustible y generación de ruido. Dado que la cámara de combustión tiene un espacio limitado con respecto la capacidad de penetración del chorro, el impacto de la pared se considera bastante común en motores de inyección directa diésel, que tienen una influencia relevante en la evolución del chorro y su interacción con el aire circundante y las paredes sólidas. Esto hace de interacción chorro-pared, un factor importante para el proceso de combustión que aún es dificilmente comprendido. En condiciones de arranque en frío, las bajas presiones y temperaturas en la cámara promueven la deposición de combustible en la pared del pistón, lo que conduce a un aumento en los niveles de formación de hidrocarburos no quemados. Además, las tendencias modernas de diseño como el incremento de las presiones de rail en los sistemas de inyección y la progresiva reducción en la cilindrada de los motores, favorecen la aparición de colisiones entre chorro y pared. A pesar de la evidente importancia en la comprensión de este fenómeno y los esfuerzos de los investigadores para alcanzarla, la transitoria naturaleza del proceso de inyección, sus pequeñas escalas de temporales y la complejidad de los fenómenos físicos que tienen lugar en las proximidades de la pared, hacen que la observación directa de esta interacción chorro-pared sea un desafío. Aunque las herramientas computacionales han demostrado ser invaluables en este campo de estudio, la necesidad de datos experimentales confiables para el desarrollo de esos modelos predictivos está muy presente. Esta tesis tiene como objetivo arrojar luz sobre las características fundamentales de la interacción chorro-pared (SWI por sus siglas en inglés) en condiciones de cámara similares a las de un motor diesel. Se colocó una pared plana a diferentes distancias de impacto y ángulos con respecto al jet. De esta manera, dos tipos diferentes de investigaciones experimentales sobre chorros en colisión se llevaron a cabo: se empleó una pared de cuarzo transparente en la cámara para, de forma aislada, analizar las características macroscópicas del chorro en condiciones evaporativas inertes y reactivas, que pueden observarse lateralmente y a través de la pared, gracias al uso de una instalación de alta presión y alta temperatura ópticamente accesible. Esta misma instalación se utilizó en el segundo tipo de experimentos en los que se introdujo una pared de acero inoxidable para capturar adicionalmente el efecto de las condiciones de operación en el flujo de calor entre ésta y el chorro durante los eventos de inyección y combustión y para determinar cómo la evolución del chorro y la llama son afectadas por una situación realista de transferencia de calor. Esta pared fue instrumentada para controlar la temperatura inicial de su superficie expuesta a la cámara y medir su variación con el tiempo, utilizando termopares de alta velocidad. Tot i l'evident importància en la comprensió d'aquest fenomen i els esforços dels investigadors per aconseguir-la, la transitòria naturalesa de l'procés d'injecció, les seves petites escales de temporals i la complexitat dels fenòmens físics que tenen lloc en les proximitats de la paret , fan que l'observació directa d'aquesta interacció doll-paret siga un desafiament. Tot i que les eines computacionals han demostrat ser invaluables en aquest camp d'estudi, la necessitat de dades experimentals fiables per al desenvolupament d'aquests models predictius està molt present. Aquesta tesi té com a objectiu donar llum sobre les característiques fonamentals de la interacció doll-paret (SWI per les seues sigles en anglès) en condicions de cambra similars a les d'un motor dièsel. Es va col·locar una paret plana a diferents distàncies d'impacte i angles pel que fa al jet. D'aquesta manera, dos tipus diferents d'investigacions experimentals sobre dolls en col·lisió es van dur a terme: es va emprar una paret de quars transparent a la cambra per, de forma aïllada, analitzar les característiques macroscòpiques del doll en condicions evaporació inerts i reactives, que poden observar lateralment i a través de la paret, gràcies a l'ús d'una instal·lació d'alta pressió i alta temperatura òpticament accessible. Aquesta mateixa instal·lació es va utilitzar en el segon tipus d'experiments en els quals es va introduir una paret d'acer inoxidable per capturar addicionalment l'efecte de les condicions d'operació en el flux de calor entre aquesta i el dull durant els esdeveniments d'injecció i combustió i per determinar com l'evolució del doll i la flama són afectades per una situació realista de transferència de calor. Aquesta paret va ser instrumentada per controlar la temperatura inicial de la seua superfície exposada a la càmera i mesurar la seua variació amb el temps, utilitzant termoparells d'alta velocitat. Experimental investigation of the plasma-wall transition

In der vorliegenden Arbeit wurde das Strömungsverhalten eines magnetisierten Argonplasmas beim Auftreffen auf eine neutralisierende Oberfläche untersucht. Mit Hilfe der Laserinduzierten Fluoreszenz wurde dazu nicht-invasiv die Geschwindigkeitsverteilung der Ionen mit einer Ortsauflösung von standardmäßig dz=0.5 mm als Funktion des Abstandes zur Oberfläche gemessen. Zwei Situationen wurden untersucht (a): praktisch das ganze Plasma strömt auf ein großes Target (Durchmesser 100 mm) und (b) die Größe des Targets ist wesentlich kleiner (Durchmesser 15 mm) als der Durchmesser der Plasmasäule. Unmittelbar vor der Oberfläche war in beiden Fällen die Strömungsgeschwindigkeit u mindestens so groß wie die Ionenschallgeschwindigkeit cs, genau wie von Bohm bereits 1949 vorhergesagt[]. Unter fusionsrelevanten Bedingungen ist dies die erste direkte Beobachtung des Bohmkriteriums. Bei Annäherung an die Oberfläche steigt die Machzahl M=u/cs von 0.5 auf 1 auf typischen Skalenlängen lambda_a=30 mm bzw. lambda_b=5 mm an. Um diese kurzen Längen erklären zu können wurden die Messdaten in (a) mit einem Stoß-Diffusionsmodell und im Falle von (b) mit dem Modell von Hutchinson[] verglichen. Eine gute Übereinstimmung in (a) wurde erzielt, wenn eine sehr niedrige Neutralgastemperatur von etwa 400 K angenommen wird. Die Messdaten in (b) werden sehr gut durch das Modell wiedergegeben, wenn ein Transportkoeffizient von D=20 m²/s angenommen wird. Ein derartig hoher Transport kann unmöglich allein durch Diffusion verursacht werden. Teilweise kann dieser Transport anhand der endlichen Gyroradien erklärt werden, vermutlich aber spielen auch zeitabhängige Phänomene, wie z.B. Driftwellen eine wichtige Rolle. Weiterhin wurde die Abhängigkeit von dem Winkel zwischen Flächennormalen und B-Feld untersucht. Die unmittelbar vor der Oberfläche auftretenden Überschallströmungen werden verhältnismäßig gut von dem Modell von Chodura[] beschrieben. Im Gegensatz dazu ist die Größe der Zone in der Machzahlen größer eins auftreten deutlich kleiner, als vom Modell vorhergesagt. / In the present work the streaming behavior of a magnetized argon plasma impinging on a neutralizing surface was investigated. For that purpose the ion velocity distribution was measured non-invasively as a function of the distance to the surface by means of Laser Induced Fluorescence. The spatial resolution was typically dz=0.5 mm. Two situations are investigated, (a): when practically the whole plasma streams onto a large target (diameter 100 mm), and (b): when the size of the target (diameter 15 mm) is significantly smaller than the diameter of the plasma column. In both cases the streaming velocity u was at least as high as the ion acoustic sound speed, as already predicted by Bohm in 1949. Under fusion relevant conditions this is the first direct observation of the Bohm criterion. Approaching the target surface the Mach number M=u/c_s increases from values of around 0.5 to 1 on typical scales of lambda_a=30 mm and lambda_b=5 mm, respectively. In order to explain these very short scale lengths the measured data were compared with a collisional-diffusive model in the case of (a) and with Hutchinson''s model[] in the case of (b). A good agreement was achieved in (a) by assuming a very low neutral gas temperature of about 400 K. In (b) the model fits the data excellently when the transport coefficient is chosen as high as D=20 m²/s. Such a high transport cannot be caused solely by diffusion. Partly it is explained by finite gyro-radii effects, but presumably time dependent phenomena, like drift waves, play an important role. In addition the dependence on the angle between surface normal and B-field was investigated. The supersonic fluxes found in the immediate vicinity of the surface are described fairly well by the model developed by Chodura[]. By contrast the size of the region, where Mach numbers greater one appear is significantly smaller than predicted.

Untersuchung der Transportphänome magnetiserter Plasmen in der Umgebung materieller Limiter

Es wurden die Transportphänomene magnetisierter Plasmen in der Umgebung materieller Limiter am linearen Plasmagenerator PSI-2 unter Verwendung von elektrischen und optischen Diagnostiken untersucht. Der Senkrechtdiffusionskoeffizient wurde mit D= 5 m^2/s und einer 1/B-Abhängigkeit bestimmt. Der dominierende Prozess des Radialtransportes ist turbulenter Natur. Unter Berücksichtigung der Volumenionisation kann das radiale Dichteprofil konsistent beschrieben werden. Der Schaft einer Langmuirsonde reduziert in einem magnetisierten Plasma die Elektronendichte. Dieses wurde mit zwei Sonden untersucht. Es wird eine globale Teilchenbilanz vorgestellt, die diese Reduktion beschreibt. Bringt man einen Limiter in ein strömendes magnetisiertes Plasma ein, so bildet sich hinter diesem ein Schatten aus. Vor dem Limiter zeigt sich für einige Plasmaregime ein inverser Schatten. Beide sind durch die starke Abhängigkeit der Emissivität von der Elektronentemperatur zu erklären. Ortsaufgelöste Messungen mit Langmuirsonden und optischer Spektroskopie bestätigen dieses experimentell und zeigen kurze Skalenlängen der Dichte für den Abfall vor und den Anstieg hinter einem Limiter. Die Längen zeigen keine klare Skalierung mit dem Ionengyrationsradius. Es werden ortsaufgelöste Messungen der Plasmaparameter mit einer Langmuirsonde vor einem Limiter unter schrägem Einfall vorgestellt. In Wasserstoffplasmen lässt sich der Dichteverlauf mit dem Modell von Chodura [Cho:82] gut beschreiben. In einer stationären Bogenentladung sind Fluktuationen in der Entladungsspannung zu finden. Diese Fluktuationen erzeugen suprathermische Elektronen, die von Limitern geblockt werden. Durch das Einbringen von Limitern werden turbulente räumliche Strukturen erzeugt, die in das Schattengebiet eindringen. Diese sind sowohl optisch mit Photomultipliern als auch als Fluktuation des Ionensättigungsstromes einer Langmuirsonde nachweisbar. Die Strukturen können den Quertransport in den Plasmaschatten verstärken. / The transport phenomena of magnetized plasmas in the vicinity of a material limiter have been investigated. The investigations were carried out at the linear plasma generator PSI-2 with electrical and optical diagnostics. The perpendicular diffusion coefficient was determined as D= 5 m^2/s with a magnetic field dependence of 1/B. The dominant process of the radial transport is therefore anomalous. By consideration of volume ionization the radial density profile can be consistently described. The shaft of a Langmuir probe acts as a particle sink and reduces electron density. This was investigated using two probes. The reduction can be explained in terms of a global particle model. On immersing a limiter into a streaming, magnetized plasma a distinct shadow region is observed downstream of the target. In addition, for some plasma conditions the region upstream of the target forms an inverse shadow. Both observations can be explained by the strong dependence of the emissivity on electron temperature. This is confirmed experimentally by Langmuir probes and optical spectroscopy. Spatially resolved measurements reveal short scale lengths for a decrease of density in front of and an increase behind a limiter. These lengths do not clearly scale with the ion gyroradius. Spatially resolved Langmuir probe measurements taken in front of a limiter at oblique incidence are presented. For hydrogen plasmas the model of Chodura [Cho:82] describes the density profile quite well. In a stationary arc discharge fluctuations in the discharge voltage are found. The fluctuations produce suprathermal electrons. These electrons are blocked by limiters. A limited plasma produces turbulent spatial structures which penetrate into the shadow region. These structures can be detected with photomultipliers and also as a fluctuation in the ion saturation current of a Langmuir probe. They can enhance perpendicular transport into the plasma shadow.

Magnetic field modeling for non-axisymmetric tokamak discharges / Modelamento do campo magnetico de descargas nao-axissimetricas em tokamaks

In this work we study the magnetic field modeling of realistic non-axisymmetric plasma equilibrium configurations and the heat flux patterns on the plasma facing components of tokamak divertor discharges. We start by establishing the relation between generic magnetic configurations and Hamiltonian dynamical systems. We apply the concept of magnetic helicity, used to establish topological bounds for the magnetic field lines in ideal plasmas, and to understand the self-consistency of reconnected magnetic surfaces in non-axisymmetric configurations. After this theoretical discussion, we present some results on magnetohydrodynamic equilibrium and the use of analytical solutions to the Grad-Shafranov equation for describing real tokamak discharges based on the experimental diagnostics and realistic boundary conditions. We also compare the equilibrium reconstruction of a DIII-D discharge obtained with a numerical reconstruction routine, developed as part of this research, and the EFIT code used by several tokamak laboratories around the world. The magnetic topology and plasma profiles obtained with our method are in considerable agreement with the numerical reconstruction performed with the other code. Then, we introduce a simplified description of the generic non-axisymmetric magnetic field created by known sources and implement it numerically for describing the magnetic field due to external coils in tokamak devices. After that, we use this routines to develop a numerical procedure to adjust a suitable set of non-linear parameters of internal filamentary currents, which are intended to model the plasma response based on the magnetic field measurements outside the plasma. Finally, these methods are used to model the magnetic field created by a slowly rotating plasma instability in a real DIII-D discharge. The plasma response modeling is based on the magnetic probe measurements and allow us to calculate the magnetic field in arbitrary locations near the plasma edge. Using this information we determine the non-axisymmetric plasma edge through the magnetic invariant manifolds routine developed during this work. The intersection of the calculated invariant manifold with the tokamak chamber agrees considerably well with the heat flux measurements for the same discharge at the divertor plates, indicating the development of a rotating manifold due to the internal asymmetric plasma currents, giving quantitative support to our simplified description of the magnetic field and the plasma edge definition through the invariant manifolds. / Neste trabalho estuda-se a modelagem do campo magnético em configurações realistas de plasmas em equilíbrio não-axissimétrico e o fluxo de calor nos componentes em contato com o plasma em descargas de tokamaks com desviadores poloidais. Começa-se estabelecendo a relação entre configurações magnéticas arbitrárias e sistemas dinâmicos Hamiltonianos. Então aplicamos o conceito de helicidade magnética, que é usado para estabelecer limitações topológicas sobre as linhas de campo magnético em plasmas ideais, assim como para compreender a auto-consistência das superfícies magnéticas reconectadas em configurações não-axissimétricas. Com base nas medidas das sondas magnéticas é possível modelar os campos criados em regiões arbitrárias próximas da borda do plasma. Usando esta informação é possível determinar a borda não-axissimétrica do plasma mediante as invariantes magnéticas calculadas com a utilização de uma rotina desenvolvida durante este trabalho. A intersecção da superfície invariante com a câmara do tokamak coincide satisfatoriamente com as medidas de fluxo de calor nas placas do divertor para a mesma descarga, indicando o desenvolvimento de uma variedade giratória criada pelas correntes de plasma não-axissimétricas, e sustentando quantitativamente a nossa descrição simplificada do campo magnético, assim como a definição da borda do plasma mediante as invariantes magnéticas.

Dynamic Characteristics And Performance Assessment Of Reinforced Concrete Structural Walls

The analytical tools used in displacement based design and assessment procedures require accurate strain limits to define the performance levels. Additionally, recently proposed changes to modeling and acceptance criteria in seismic regulations for both flexure and shear dominated reinforced concrete structural walls proves that a comprehensive study is required for improved limit state definitions and their corresponding values. This is due to limitations in the experimental setups, such that most previous tests used a single actuator at the top of the wall, which does not reflect the actual loading condition, and infeasibility of performing tests of walls of actual size in actual structural configuration. This study utilizes a well calibrated finite element modeling tool to investigate the relationship between the global drift, section rotation and curvature, and local concrete and steel strains at the extreme fiber of rectangular structural walls. Functions defining more exact limits of modeling parameters and acceptance criteria for rectangular reinforced concrete walls were developed. This way a strict evaluation of the requirements embedded in the Turkish Seismic Code and other design guidelines has become possible. Several other aspects of performance evaluation of structural walls were studied also. Accurate finite element modeling strategies and analytical models of wall and frame-wall systems were developed for seismic response calculations. The models are able to calculate both the static and dynamic characteristics of wall type buildings efficiently. Seismic responses of wall type buildings characterized with increasing wall area in the plan were analyzed under design spectrum compatible normal ground motions.
