Since Hymenoptera Aculeate are known to be bioindicators, which are sensitive to environment change, fragmentation of habitats and antropogenous impact, these insects may have an importance in environment conservation. The purpose of our study was to establish impact of nesting cavity parameters and prey abundance on the nesting behaviour of solitary xylicolous wasps. We studied nest structure and the influence of nesting cavity width and length on progeny size and sex ratio in 13 wasp species. The development of the most common synanthropic xylicolous wasp in Lithuania, Symmorphus allobrogus, has been investigated: the assimilation of prey and weight loss during development from larva to adult in both sexes have been compared. Results of a laboratory experiment using S. allobrogus as a model species demonstrated that the amount of prey available in the environment affects the number of cells in the nest of solitary wasp. The list of solitary Hymenoptera inhabiting trap-nests in Lithuania are presented.

Abstrac: Hymenoptera is one of the largest orders of insects, comprising wasps, bees, and ants. Among the Aculeata, bees are important ecological indicators, as they have a vital role in the natural maintenance through pollination. Among parasitic hymenopterans, wasps develop as parasitoids, regulating the population of other arthropods. The intensification of agriculture and consequently the simplification of the structure of the landscape have had an impact on the richness of the vegetation and fauna, which has attracted the attention of researchers around the world. Concerned with the impact of agriculture on native bees and parasitoids, this study aimed to assess the composition of these groups in an agricultural area in the city of Rio Claro, São Paulo State. The studied area is characterized by the production of grains through direct drilling and chemical products to control weeds and insects. Monthly samples were collected from May 2003 to June 2004, except October/03 and January/04, using 16 Moericke traps placed directly on the soil for 36 hours. A total of 5308 parasitoid hymenopterans of 8 superfamilies and 22 families were collected. Mymaridae, Encyrtidae, Scelionidae and Platygastridae were the most common families with relative frequencies of 30.88%, 19.05%, 14.96%, and 6.69%, respectively. Additionally, 18 families occurred with frequencies lower than 5%. A total of 456 bees of 20 genera belonging to three families were collected. Among bees, Halictidae was the most common family representing 54.4% followed by Apidae (40.8%), and Andrenidae (4.8%). Dialictus (38%) and Diadasia (30%) were the most common genera. Bees of the genus Callonychium were observed for the first time in São Paulo State. The type of management used in the area, direct drilling and soil irrigation, favored the growth of ruderal plants probably used as a source of food.

It is formed by a pair of testicles, two deferent ducts and one ejaculatory duct. In each deferent duct there is an enlarged region, the seminal vesicle, with an accessory gland opening in the end of it. Each testicle has three follicles which have germ cells in all spermatogenesis stages, even in sexually matures individuals. Sperms are released from testicles in bundles with up to 32 cells. These bundles are gradually disorganized inside seminal vesicle, witch have a fold that we believe that play a role like a valve, dosing sperms released in each ejaculation. In T. lactitarse, mating occurs before each oviposition what can assure male paternity of most offspring in that nest, since spermatheca is practically vestigial in these females and then might disable sperm storage. Otherwise in T. nitidum mating is less common and there is sperm inside spermatheca, although it is a little amount. This suggests that there are differences in reproductive strategies between both species.

Population genomics of pollinating fig wasps and their natural enemies

Cooper, Lisa Suzanne January 2018 (has links)
The advent of next generation sequencing technologies has had a major impact on inference methods for population genetics. For example, community ecology studies can now assess species interactions using population history parameters estimated from genomic scale data. Figs and their pollinating fig wasps are obligate mutualists thought to have coevolved for some 75 million years. This relationship, along with additional interactions with many species of non-pollinating fig wasps (NPFW), makes this system an excellent model for studying multi-trophic community interactions. A common way of investigating the population histories of a community's component species is to use genetic markers to estimate demographic parameters such as divergence times and effective population sizes. The extent to which histories are congruent gives insights into the way in which the community has assembled. Because of coalescent variance, using thousands of loci from the genomes of a small number of individuals gives more statistical power and more realistic estimates of population parameters than previous methods using just a handful of loci from many individuals. In this thesis, I use genomic data from eleven fig wasp species, which are associated with three fig species located along the east coast of Australia, to characterise community assembly in this system. The first results chapter describes the laboratory and bioinformatic protocols required to generate genomic data from individual wasps, and assesses the level of genetic variation present across populations using simple summaries. The second results chapter presents a detailed demographic analysis of the pollinating fig wasp, Pleistodontes nigriventris. The inferences were made using a likelihood modelling framework and the pairwise sequentially Markovian coalescent (PSMC) method. The final results chapter characterises community assembly by assessing congruence between the population histories inferred for eight fig wasp species. The population histories were inferred using a new composite likelihood modelling framework. I conclude by discussing the implications of the results presented along with potential future directions for the research carried out in this thesis.

The approach of corruption in the judiciary institutions of the fifth century a. C., in The Wasps, highlight the artistic and political concerns of Aristophanes by preserving the values and integrity of democratic institutions of Athens. From the observation that proceeded Aristophanes in defense of the polis, the goal of this research is to analyze of the comedy The Wasps, centered on its principal: the prologue, the parodo, the agon, the parabasis, episodic scenes, the exodus and secondaries aspects: the educational, the political, the legal and the cultural. Aristophanes criticism came at a time when the Athenian society lived the splendor of democracy, reforms resulting from socio-political-economic Dracon, Solon, Cleisthenes and Pericles. In contrary pole of Athenian democracy, the politician and demagogue Cleon live, in the caricature comic, like a tyrant or an agent of divine king pre-classical Greece, which was the absolute master in society. Aristophanes covers all these aspects of Athenian life in two basic parts comedy: the first, going from verse 1 to verse 1010, relates to the conduct of manic of Filocleon (‘Which loves Cleon’) by courts, and the attempt of his son, Bdelicleon (‘Which hates Cleon’), to reeducating him; and the second, going from verse 1010 to verse 1535, concerned the social reintegration of Filocleão in Athenian life. Both parties of comedy are devoted, therefore, not only to criticize the conduct personal and functional of Filocleon, but invite the Athenian society to preserve its institutions or the functions of democratic power: the People's Assembly, the Council of Five Hundred and the Courts.

Investigating Wasp Societies: A Historical and Epistemological Study

January 2016 (has links)
abstract: The study of wasp societies (family Vespidae) has played a central role in advancing our knowledge of why social life evolves and how it functions. This dissertation asks: How have scientists generated and evaluated new concepts and theories about social life and its evolution by investigating wasp societies? It addresses this question both from a narrative/historical and from a reflective/epistemological perspective. The historical narratives reconstruct the investigative pathways of the Italian entomologist Leo Pardi (1915-1990) and the British evolutionary biologist William D. Hamilton (1936-2000). The works of these two scientists represent respectively the beginning of our current understanding of immediate and evolutionary causes of social life. Chapter 1 shows how Pardi, in the 1940s, generated a conceptual framework to explain how wasp colonies function in terms of social and reproductive dominance. Chapter 2 shows how Hamilton, in the 1960s, attempted to evaluate his own theory of inclusive fitness by investigating social wasps. The epistemological reflections revolve around the idea of investigative framework for theory evaluation. Chapter 3 draws on the analysis of important studies on social wasps from the 1960s and 1970s and provides an account of theory evaluation in the form of an investigative framework. The framework shows how inferences from empirical data (bottom-up) and inferences from the theory (top-down) inform one another in the generation of hypotheses, predictions and statements about phenomena of social evolution. It provides an alternative to existing philosophical accounts of scientific inquiry and theory evaluation, which keep a strong, hierarchical distinction between inferences from the theory and inferences from the data. The historical narratives in this dissertation show that important scientists have advanced our knowledge of complex biological phenomena by constantly interweaving empirical, conceptual, and theoretical work. The epistemological reflections argue that we need holistic frameworks that account for how multiple scientific practices synergistically contribute to advance our knowledge of complex phenomena. Both narratives and reflections aim to inspire and inform future work in social evolution capitalizing on lessons learnt from the past. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Biology 2016

Abstract: Dryinidae (Hymenoptera, Chrysidoidea) is cosmopolitan, include about of 14 subfamilies, 48 genera and about of 1700 species described. To the Neotropics there are records of six subfamilies, 22 genera and about of 450 species. Their females, except Aphelopinae and Erwiniinae, have protarsos modified in form of enlarged claw, adapted to hold and attach their prey. Dryinidae are koinobionts ectopasitoids of Cicadellidae, Delphacidae, Flatidae and Membracidae (Hemiptera). Dryininae comprises about 340 species distributed in six genera, among them Dryinus Latreille that includes about 270 species distributed in four groups of species, of which about 110 to the Neotropics and 40 to the Brazil. This research aimed to study the Dryinidae from preservation areas the Atlantic Forest of the State of São Paulo, with special reference to Dryinus. Samples were collected monthly between October 2009 and March 2011 at Parque Estadual Intervales, in Ribeirão Grande and Estação Ecológica Juréia-Itatins, in Iguape; between November 2009 and December 2010 at Parque Estadual Serra do Mar, Núcleo Picinguaba, in Ubatuba and between November 2009 and April 2011 at Núcleo Santa Virginia, in São Luiz do Paraitinga, and between December 2009 and February 2011 at Parque Estadual Morro do Diabo, in Teodoro Sampaio. In each area were installed five Malaise traps, distant 50 meters apart and active throughout entire the period. The biological material was sent to the Laboratório de Sistemática e Bioecologia de Parasitoides e Predadores of the APTA, in Ribeirão Preto, State of São Paulo where were identified the subfamilies and genera of Dryinidae through the identification keys proposed by Olmi (2006) and Olmi and Virla (2006), and the species of Dryinus through of Olmi (no prelo). Were collected 881 specimens of four subfamilies of Dryinidae: Gonatopodinae ... / Mestre
