Bi-directional Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexed Systems for Broadband Access Networks

Akanbi, Oladeji Bamidele 20 November 2006 (has links)
Dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) is becoming the technology of choice for meeting the increasing bandwidth demands in optical networks. DWDM has been used to increase the capacity of long-haul optical transport systems. Efforts are being made to move DWDM into the broadband access network serving residential and business subscribers. First, a new centralized DWDM PON scheme is demonstrated for bi-directional upstream and downstream transmissions. The proposed DWDM PON scheme is implemented using optical carrier suppression and separation (OCSS) technology to generate a wavelength pair from a single laser source at the central office. This method enables the co-location of both upstream and downstream DWDM transmitters in the central office. In addition, the complexity, cost, and maintenance of the optical network unit are reduced by enabling wavelength independent operation. Second, a new multistage architecture is proposed for the delivery of information to groups of subscribers located at different distances from the central office. A 25 GHz DWDM comb is generated using OCSS technology, and error-free transmission of four 10 Gbps channels is demonstrated. Finally, a new wide area access network with bi-directional DWDM amplification using semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) is demonstrated. The detrimental effect of SOA crosstalk resulting from cross gain modulation can be suppressed using a constant intensity modulation format such as differential phase shift keying (DPSK). The feasibiity of bi-directional DPSK transmission of 16 interleaved DWDM channels using an in-line SOA has been studied experimentally. In addition, the reduction of bi-directional SOA reflections has been realized by optimizing the SOA bias current and facet reflectivities.

Dual-Wavelength Internal-Optically-Pumped Semiconductor Laser Diodes

January 2011 (has links)
abstract: Dual-wavelength laser sources have various existing and potential applications in wavelength division multiplexing, differential techniques in spectroscopy for chemical sensing, multiple-wavelength interferometry, terahertz-wave generation, microelectromechanical systems, and microfluidic lab-on-chip systems. In the drive for ever smaller and increasingly mobile electronic devices, dual-wavelength coherent light output from a single semiconductor laser diode would enable further advances and deployment of these technologies. The output of conventional laser diodes is however limited to a single wavelength band with a few subsequent lasing modes depending on the device design. This thesis investigates a novel semiconductor laser device design with a single cavity waveguide capable of dual-wavelength laser output with large spectral separation. The novel dual-wavelength semiconductor laser diode uses two shorter- and longer-wavelength active regions that have separate electron and hole quasi-Fermi energy levels and carrier distributions. The shorter-wavelength active region is based on electrical injection as in conventional laser diodes, and the longer-wavelength active region is then pumped optically by the internal optical field of the shorter-wavelength laser mode, resulting in stable dual-wavelength laser emission at two different wavelengths quite far apart. Different designs of the device are studied using a theoretical model developed in this work to describe the internal optical pumping scheme. The carrier transport and separation of the quasi-Fermi distributions are then modeled using a software package that solves Poisson's equation and the continuity equations to simulate semiconductor devices. Three different designs are grown using molecular beam epitaxy, and broad-area-contact laser diodes are processed using conventional methods. The modeling and experimental results of the first generation design indicate that the optical confinement factor of the longer-wavelength active region is a critical element in realizing dual-wavelength laser output. The modeling predicts lower laser thresholds for the second and third generation designs; however, the experimental results of the second and third generation devices confirm challenges related to the epitaxial growth of the structures in eventually demonstrating dual-wavelength laser output. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Electrical Engineering 2011

An immunohistochemical and histological evaluation of the African buffalo (Syncerus caffer) retina

Odayar, Lo-An January 2013 (has links)
Vision studies and visual acuity investigations are an ongoing and progressive field in veterinary ophthalmology. These independent studies all help to contribute to a combined and collective knowledge in our understanding of this truly complex matter. Understanding retinal morphology and physiology is an integral factor in piecing together overall function of the eye. Many of these studies have been done in both medical and veterinary ophthalmology using behavioural factors, electrophysiology, special staining and scanning techniques on a histological level. In the veterinary field many species have been studied pointing out similarities or differences among them. This study hopes to contribute to the understanding of the retinal ultrastructure of the African buffalo (Syncerus caffer). Twenty-five pairs of African buffalo eyes were obtained, but only forty-eight eyes were included in this investigation. The globes of one donor appeared to have chronic intraocular disease and were phthisical. Since this is a descriptive study of normal anatomy and function, these eyes were excluded. Globe dimensions were recorded and statistically analysed, revealing an average horizontal diameter of 32.91mm and a vertical diameter of 33.04mm. The median age of the donor group was 4 years with Using scanning electron microscopy it was established that African buffalo retinas, like other domestic species, have a specialised region a few millimetres dorsolateral to the optic disc, synonymous to the well described area centralis. In this region a higher concentration of cones is found as opposed to other rod-rich regions. In a concurrent investigation, the contralateral globes were processed for immunohistochemical antibody staining. Colour specific anti-bodies were used to identify the cone population present in the African buffalo retina. The conclusion of this investigation reveals that this species like other domestic animals has dichromatic colour vision, recognising short and medium to long colour wavelengths. / Dissertation (MMedVet)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / gm2014 / Companion Animal Clinical Studies / unrestricted

ITC/USA 2009 Conference Proceedings / The Forty-Fifth Annual International Telemetering Conference and Technical Exhibition / October 26-29, 2009 / Riviera Hotel & Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada / Electrostatic approach is considered for mitigation of communication attenuation during the testing of laser powered directed energy weapon. Mitigation analysis is carried out for two target materials Al and Ti. Plasma parameters are obtained using one dimensional coupled analysis of laser-target interaction. Influence of laser beam frequency on plasma parameters is addressed. Sheath thickness is obtained using transient sheath calculations. It is found that uninterrupted telemetry can be achieved | using a maximum bias voltage of 10 kV, through Al plasma for fluences below 5 J/cm² and through Ti plasma for fluences below 2 J/cm².

UNDERSTANDING THE NON-CONTACT TEMPERATURE MEASUREMENT TECHNOLOGY

Jordan, Jorge, J. 10 1900 (has links)
ITC/USA 2005 Conference Proceedings / The Forty-First Annual International Telemetering Conference and Technical Exhibition / October 24-27, 2005 / Riviera Hotel & Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada / The ability to accurately measure the temperature of different materials has always been a challenge for the Instrumentation Engineer. The use the classic contact type temperature detector such as thermocouples or RTD’s (Resistance Temperature Detectors) has not always shown to be the best approach to obtain the expected measurement. When not used carefully in closed environments, thermocouples and RTD’s could report the environmental temperature rather than the temperature from the product under examination. They are also temperature limited and when needed for applications above those limits, very expensive and low reliable materials are necessary to do the job. The use of non-contact thermometers has become the preferred choice for such applications. They have also come as a solution for the difficulties involved in the temperature measurements of moving targets. The industry has used portable and spot type infrared thermometers for some time, but the demand for better and more precise measurements has brought an incredible number of new products to the market. By means of advanced electronics and new software developments these products are used to cope with the difficulties of acquiring challenging measurements. Some of the same demands have made necessary the use of non-contact temperature measurement devices on aircraft instrumentation applications. The use of these capabilities has allowed the data acquisition community to get valuable data that was very difficult if not impossible to obtain before. In spite of all these facts, this promising emerging technology demands very careful attention before it is put to good use. The many products and solutions available do not accurately address every problem and the selection of the wrong technology for a specific task can prove to be fatal. The use of non-contact temperature devices is not an easy “off the shelf” pick but rather an option that demands knowledge of the infrared measurement theory as well as a complete understanding of the material under observation. The intention of this paper is to provide a practical understanding on the non-contact temperature measurement methods to the Aircraft Instrumentation Engineer who has not benefited from the use of this exiting technology.
