Chen, Yuan-kai 09 July 2010 (has links)
Abstract The company for case study always dedicates to reinforce interior constitution as well as exterior competition, the major core is surrounding The Toyota Way, which it started with ¡§SEIRI and SEITON¡¨, ¡§Streamline Production¡¨ to ¡§Toyota Production System, TPS¡¨ from manufacturing fields, and then the company mind of ¡¨The Toyota Way¡¨. The development of each phase has its strategic position with different gradation. Moreover, in order to incorporate the operation for both Taiwan headquarter and China facility, divisions are segmented by operational functions for appropriate redeployment and valued-connection. The core for developing this study have had the case company to implement ¡§The Toyota Way, through meticulous discussions in order to clarify the built-up of ¡¨The Toyota Way¡¨ in the case company. First, start from ¡§manufacturing perspective¡¨ from working fields, with Streamline Production and Just-In-Time production as basic capabilities to build up the strength. Furthermore, extend it to the system of ¡¨ Product Developing Process Management¡¨, and connect with Big-Room ¡§Obeya¡¨ activity, ¡§Preparation prior to mass production¡¨, ¡§Supplier Parts Tracking Team, SPTT¡¨, and ¡§Cost Management¡¨¡C Last, through the strategic plan of company operation and functions of TPS operation with Knowledge of Philosophy from System, Method and Nature, to develop a series of deep competitions for the strength of company enhancement. Summarizations above, conclusions of the research are as following- 1. Generalized each activity and operating function with four perspectives as Company Philosophy, Elimination of Waste, Business Partners and Continuous Improvement, while the case company implemented TPS. Furthermore, described what the case company¡¦s functions of implement or concepts of application, which expect the study could be referred while related corporations try to implement them in the future. 2. Beside fully support from executive management to carry out the philosophy of The Toyota Way into organizational operation¡¦s thinking in the corporation, the most critical key-point is that it is necessary to create an environment with continuous improvement and participation of all employees in order to seed the realization into everyone¡¦s mind deeply.

EM-Based Joint Detection and Estimation for Two-Way Relay Network

Yen, Kai-wei 01 August 2012 (has links)
In this paper, the channel estimation problem for a two-way relay network (TWRN) based on two different wireless channel assumptions is considered. Previous works have proposed a training-based channel estimation method to obtain the channel state information (CSI). But in practice the channel change from one data block to another, which may cause the performance degradation due to the outdated CSI. To enhance the performance, the system has to insert more training signal. In order to improve the bandwidth efficiency, we propose a joint channel estimation and data detection method based on expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm. From the simulation results, the proposed method can combat the effect of fading channel and still the MSE results are very close to Cramer-Rao Lower Bound (CRLB) at the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region. Additionally, as compare with the previous work, the proposed scheme also has a better detection performance for both time-varying and time-invariant channels.

World Bank&#039 / s Changing Approach To Poverty From A Neoliberal To A Third Way Approach: The Case Of Turkey

Bademci, Emine 01 December 2007 (has links) (PDF)
This study aims to understand and explain World Bank&rsquo / s changing approach to poverty since 1990. Established as a development institution and as one of the leading members of development community, the World Bank has nearly turned out to be a poverty alleviation institution especially from late 1990s on. This change is a reflection of a process in which the Bank shapes its approach to poverty not only in accordance with its own goals but also in the framework of what happens in wider social, economic and political spheres of which the Bank is a part as a subject that both shapes and is shaped by them to a certain extent. Consequently, a remarkable change is observed in the Bank&rsquo / s approach, and this process of change is investigated in this study in two sub-periods that are characterized by ruptures in continuity. The first period more or less between 1990 and 1997 is characterized by the Bank&rsquo / s neoliberal approach to poverty, which mainly assumes poverty as a complementary element of structural adjustment programs in countries they are implemented. The second period from 1997 up to present is characterized, on the other hand, by a &ldquo / third way&rdquo / approach to poverty which mainly assumes poverty-as-social-exclusion as an indispensable central element of a renewed hegemonic project. In this study, the traces of these ruptures and the continuity in the Bank&rsquo / s approach are followed through their reflections on Turkey by making a close reading of the Bank&rsquo / s documents about poverty in Turkey.

The Resistance Committees: Devrimci Yol And The Question Of Revolutionary Organization In Turkey In The Late 1970s

Bozkurt, Sumercan 01 December 2008 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis aims to examine the experiences of the resistance committees organized by a revolutionary Movement, Devrimci Yol (Revolutionary Way), in Turkey in the late 1970s. More specifically it focuses on Devrimci Yol&rsquo / s formulations concerning the issue of revolutionary organization, how it and the resistance committee experiences &ndash / within their contexts- embodied the tension between being organized in accordance with initiating change within the social relations of everyday life and being organized in accordance with a strategy of state takeover. The study argues that Devrimci Yol&rsquo / s attempt towards the reconciliation of these two understandings gave the Movement its peculiarity within the left in Turkey. With all their constraints the resistance committees and accompanying experiences of people&rsquo / s and workplace committees pointed out a logic of revolutionary organization different from the predominant one in which any kind of revolutionary transformation was postponed until the forthcoming revolution. When examining Devrimci Yol and the resistance committees, the study refers to different approaches to the question of revolutionary organization in Marxist theory and practice.

A Discursive Enquiry Into The Political Economy Of New Labour: Is It A Rupture From Or A Perpetuation Of Neoliberal Hegemony?

Savas, Efe 01 September 2009 (has links) (PDF)
From the 1980&rsquo / s onwards a new conceptual framework which will be subsequently called neoliberalism has become hegemonic by transforming and redefining the common sense. In the midst of the world economic crisis in the 1970s which would bring the collapse of Keynesian paradigm, a new political culture promoting the superiority of market-based order has started to emerge. Subsequently during the 1980s, by establishing &lsquo / market-oriented society&rsquo / as the new dominant paradigm, neoliberal hegemony has realized furher seperation of &lsquo / economics&rsquo / from the &lsquo / politics.&rsquo / In this respect, regarding the implementation of neoliberal policies, Great Britain can be considered as a prime example. During the last three decades, political atmosphere of Great Britain has to a large extent been shaped under the influence of neoliberal hegemony that has engendered a significant paradigm shift in the country&rsquo / s political economy. Meanwhile in the rapidly changing political atmosphere of 1980&rsquo / s and 1990&rsquo / s, British Labour Party has also gone through a gradual ideological transformation that culminated in the emergence of New Labour. Despite its initial claim to novelty, since New Labour is itself an actor that is formed during the hegemony of neoliberalism, its possible affiliation with the neoliberal paradigm deserves attention. In this sense, in order to analyse its affiliation with the neoliberal hegemony, this thesis attempts to develop a discursive enquiry into the political economy of New Labour. Consequently, by relying on remarkable findings which indicate the commonalities between New Labour and neoliberalism, this thesis advocates that although being different from the initial neoliberal stance of &lsquo / Thatcherism&rsquo / , New Labour perpetuates neoliberal hegemony insofar it takes neoliberal political economy&rsquo / s basic premises as for granted.

Development Of A Three Way Catalytic Converter For Elimination Of Hydrocarbons, Carbon Monoxide And Nitric Oxide In Automotive Exhaust

Kandilli, Nur 01 September 2010 (has links) (PDF)
In this work, slurries of powder catalysts are washcoated on 22 mm diameter and 13 mm height cordierite monoliths. CeO2-ZrO2 (CZO) and CeO2-ZrO2- Al2O3 (CZAO) mixed oxides are synthesized by co-precipitation and sol-gel methods respectively, to be used as support materials of Pd and Rh metals. Metal loaded CZO is mixed with gamma phase alumina. Powder catalysts and their slurries are characterized by XRD, BET, ICP-MS and the monolithic catalysts are imaged by SEM. Catalytic activities of monolithic catalysts are tested in dynamic test system which is computerized and basically composed of gas flow control and conditioning units, split furnace, quartz reactor, mass spectrometer and CO analyzer. Gas mixture containing CO, C3H6, C3H8, NO, H2, O2, CO2, SO2, H2O and N2 is used to simulate the exhaust gas of gasoline vehicles. O2 is oscillated at 1 Hz frequency around the stoichiometric condition. Monolithic catalyst in the reactor is heated and cooled between 150 &ordm / C and 600 &ordm / C. Gas composition data from massspectrometer and CO analyzer and temperature data from thermocouple at the monolith entrance, are converted to conversion versus temperature graphs. Results of 26 activity tests are compared. Catalyst containing coimpregnated CZO support material with metals, showed the lowest loss of catalytic performance after exposure to SO2 during activity tests. Catalyst containing separately impregnated CZO support material, showed the highest resistance against thermal aging at 900 &ordm / C and 1000 &ordm / C, and even improved catalytic activity after aging. These catalysts showed higher resistances against the applied procedures than the commercial catalyst.

An investigation of passing operations on a rural, two-lane, two-way highway with centerline rumble strips

Miles, Jeffrey David 17 February 2005 (has links)
The research in this thesis was conducted to investigate the initial stage of passing maneuvers on a rural, two-lane, two-way (RTLTW) highway with centerline rumble strips (CRSs). Four measures of effectiveness were used: (1) number and type of erratic movements by a passing vehicle, (2) number of and time between centerline encroachments of a passing vehicle, (3) gap distance of a passing vehicle, and (4) centerline crossing time. Data were collected for a before-and-after analysis at one site, in Comanche County, Texas. The test section was on US 67 from Comanche, Texas to the county line south of Dublin, Texas. The posted speed limit for this RTLTW highway was 70 mph during the day. CRSs were installed along approximately 15 miles of US 67. Only one test design for CRSs was installed. The design specification was for a CRS to be milled to a 0.5-inch depth, 7-inch length, and 16-inch width. This specification was developed from current state practices throughout the United States. CRSs were installed continuously through passing and no-passing zones, and they were spaced at 24 inches on-centers. Pavement markings were striped over the CRSs. Data were collected using an innovative data collection system developed by the author through the Texas Transportation Institute (TTI). This system was mounted to a four-door sedan, and it consisted of four concealed cameras that recorded the entire passing maneuver around the data collection vehicle. Data were collected at three different speeds during the daytime. The speeds were 55, 60, and 65 mph (15, 10, and 5 mph, respectively, under the posted speed limit). Based on the assessment of the four MOEs, the overall finding of this thesis was that driver performance during the initial phase of passing maneuvers was not negatively impacted after the installation of CRSs on US 67. The caveat is that differences in the weather conditions may have influenced the results. The weather was dry with clear skies at the study site during data collection prior to the installation of CRSs; however, the weather consisted of intermittent rain during the data collection after the installation of CRSs.

Strengthening of two-way reinforced concrete slabs with Textile Reinforced Mortars (TRM)

Papanicolaou, Catherine, Triantafillou, Thanasis, Papantoniou, Ioannis, Balioukos, Christos 03 June 2009 (has links) (PDF)
An innovative strengthening technique is applied for the first time in this study to provide flexural strengthening in two-way reinforced concrete (RC) slabs supported on edge beams. The technique comprises external bonding of textiles on the tension face of RC slabs through the use of polymer-modified cement- based mortars. The textiles used in the experimental campaign comprised fabric meshes made of long stitch-bonded fibre rovings in two orthogonal directions. The specimens measured 2 x 2 m in plan and were supported on hinges at the corners. Three RC slabs strengthened by textile reinforced mortar (TRM) overlays and one control specimen were tested to failure. One specimen received one layer of carbon fibre textile, another one received two, whereas the third specimen was strengthened with three layers of glass fibre textile having the same axial rigidity (in both directions) with the single-layered carbon fibre textile. All specimens failed due to flexural punching. The load-carrying capacity of the strengthened slabs was increased by 26%, 53%, and 20% over that of the control specimen for slabs with one (carbon), two (carbon) and three (glass) textile layers, respectively. The strengthened slabs showed an increase in stiffness and energy absorption. The experimental results are compared with theoretical predictions based on existing models specifically developed for two-way slabs and the performance of the latter is evaluated. Based on the findings of this work the authors conclude that TRM overlays comprise a very promising solution for the strengthening of two-way RC slabs.

Trust, risk and vulnerability : towards a philosophy of risk communication

Hayenhjelm, Madeleine January 2006 (has links)

This thesis is a philosophical contribution to the theories on risk communication. The topic of risk communication is approached from several different angles, but with a normative focus on equality and vulnerability.

Essay I is a comment on risk perception theory and the psychometric model in particular. In risk perception research individual risk taking is described as either a result of valuing the benefits from risk taking or a failure of comprehending the severity or probability of risks. The essay argues that sometimes individuals take risks simply because they are in a vulnerable position and have no other choice. Four factors are identified as crucial in risks from vulnerability: poor outset conditions, lack of reasonable options, hope and liability to disinformation.

Essay II addresses the democratic approach to risk communication and the ideal of risk communication as a dialogue between more or less equal stakeholders. The Essay argues that even the more innovative and dialogue oriented approaches to risk communication are unequal. This is often blurred by the confusion between the described ideal and the description of these newer approaches. This inequality is analysed in a three-fold way: influence over the communication process; influence over and access to information; and influence over risk decisions. The Essay develops a typology of different risk communication practices and influence distributions and concludes that the form of risk communication most commonly referred in the literature is the most imbalanced kind where all three types of influence falls to the same party.

Essay III explores the concept of trust, an often-mentioned objective for risk communication. The concept of trust is analyzed from previous philosophical approaches, and the idea of trust as comfortable defocusing is introduced. It is argued that not only the gains for the trustee but also the gains and risks for the truster, generally and in the case from risk communication, can be explained by this notion. It is concluded that public trust for institutions or organizations need not be framed on an individual level. Instead, the vulnerability of trusting can be counter-acted by a delegation of different stances, including both control and trust, among different individuals and institutions in society.
