Isolation of stimulus characteristics contributing to Weber's law for position.

No / To examine the independent contribution of various stimulus characteristics to positional judgements, we measured vernier alignment performance for three types of Gabor stimuli. In one, only the contrast envelope of the upper and lower stimulus elements was offset, with the luminance-modulated carrier grating remaining in alignment. In the second, only the carrier grating was offset. In the third, both carrier and envelope were offset together. Performance was examined over a range of element separations. When both cues are available, thresholds for small separations are dominated by carrier offset information and are inversely proportional to carrier frequency. At large separations, thresholds are governed by the spatial scale characteristics of the envelope. For broad-band stimuli such as lines, bars or dots typically used for vernier acuity, their higher frequency content can be used when separations are small, but as separation increases a smooth transition between the scales that determine threshold results in the continuum known as Weber's law for position. That is, with increasing separation, larger scales must be used, and thresholds increase in direct proportion to 1/frequency.

The Impact of Graph Layouts on the Perception of Graph Properties

abstract: Graphs are commonly used visualization tools in a variety of fields. Algorithms have been proposed that claim to improve the readability of graphs by reducing edge crossings, adjusting edge length, or some other means. However, little research has been done to determine which of these algorithms best suit human perception for particular graph properties. This thesis explores four different graph properties: average local clustering coefficient (ALCC), global clustering coefficient (GCC), number of triangles (NT), and diameter. For each of these properties, three different graph layouts are applied to represent three different approaches to graph visualization: multidimensional scaling (MDS), force directed (FD), and tsNET. In a series of studies conducted through the crowdsourcing platform Amazon Mechanical Turk, participants are tasked with discriminating between two graphs in order to determine their just noticeable differences (JNDs) for the four graph properties and three layout algorithm pairs. These results are analyzed using previously established methods presented by Rensink et al. and Kay and Heer.The average JNDs are analyzed using a linear model that determines whether the property-layout pair seems to follow Weber's Law, and the individual JNDs are run through a log-linear model to determine whether it is possible to model the individual variance of the participant's JNDs. The models are evaluated using the R2 score to determine if they adequately explain the data and compared using the Mann-Whitney pairwise U-test to determine whether the layout has a significant effect on the perception of the graph property. These tests indicate that the data collected in the studies can not always be modelled well with either the linear model or log-linear model, which suggests that some properties may not follow Weber's Law. O presente estudo teve por objetivo obter a constante de Weber da percepção de comprimento de linha através de mediação tátil (bengala) e observar diferenças perceptuais quanto à capacidade visual dos participantes e do material utilizado na confecção dos mediadores táteis. Além disso, comparamos a disposição vertical e horizontal dos estímulos para verificar a ocorrência ou não das ilusões vertical-horizontal e radial-tangencial. Para isso, aplicamos o método dos estímulos constantes e uma escala de categoria em 90 participantes subdivididos em 3 grupos de acordo com a capacidade visual: deficientes visuais, videntes vendados e videntes. Os resultados mostraram que não houve diferença estatística entre os grupos, o tipo de material e a disposição espacial dos estímulos. Quando comparamos os resultados da constante de Weber para o tato mediado com a constante para o tato ativo, encontramos diferenças estatísticas na maioria das condições experimentais, revelando que o tato mediado é menos sensível que o tato ativo. Os resultados nos levam a concluir que ocorre perda de informação no tato mediado, com importantes implicações para os deficientes visuais que dependem de instrumentos para perceberem o ambiente. / The present study aimed to estimate the Weber\'s constant in perception of line length and to verify perceptual differences regarding participants\' visual capacity and the material used in canes. The method of constant stimuli and a category scale were applied to 90 participants divided into 3 groups: visually impaired, blindfolded, and sighted participants. The results showed no significant differences between groups, materials, or stimuli\'s positions. We also found that the Weber\'s constant values for mediated tactual perception were significantly higher than the constant value for active tactual perception for most conditions of the experiment. We concluded that tactual mediation implies in information loss in comparison with direct tactual perception, a fact that has important implications to individuals with visual impairment who depend on tools to better perceive the environment.

A tri-modal theory of agency

This study aims to determine the relationship between agency and freedom and it has developed a Tri-Modal Theory of Agency that explains an agent’s decisions with a focus on freedom. Here, based on Berlin’s (1958) ideas we have conceptualised positive and negative sides of freedom with a focus on agency. Meanwhile, agency is defined and measured in three following modes: (A) the conative mode is developed based on Sen’s (2007) capability approach, (B) the cognitive mode is conceptualised based on Weber’s (1993) rationality types and Bakhtin’s (1935) dialogism, and (C) the affective mode is developed based on Weiner’s (2010) attribution theory of emotion. A Tri-Modal Theory of Agency is tested and developed in five empirical studies that include 21 in-depth interviews, two surveys on career choice of 1063 employees and a university major selection of 4086 students in Iran, and finally the theory is applied to one case study that explains an entrepreneur’s agency-freedom relationship after a business failure. In summary, the Tri-Modal Theory of Agency establishes that freedom matters but having agency to give up freedom in pursuit of one’s values ought to be the primary aspiration. This study can be exploited in the field of social psychology, appraisal psychology and organisational behaviour to understand an agent’s decisions in a social context with a focus on her freedom.

Sustainability, Empowerment, and Resident Attitudes toward Tourism: Developing and Testing the Resident Empowerment through Tourism Scale (RETS)

Research on resident attitudes towards tourism and sustainability are two of the most ubiquitous and important topics within tourism research. This study sought to contribute to these fields of research in four specific ways. First, this study suggested Weber's theory of formal and substantive rationality as a theory capable of explaining the complexity inherent in resident attitudes toward tourism because of its incorporation of the economic and non-economic factors influencing rationality. The inclusion of Weber as a theoretical framework is also presented as a theory useful for bringing Social Exchange Theory (SET) back to its original focus on 'all' the costs and benefits associated within the host/guest relationship. The second and third contributions of the study stem from taking the previously conceptual constructs of psychological, social, and political empowerment and developing them into reliable and valid measurement scales. After validation, the three sub-scales were tested in a Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), which demonstrated them to be construct valid based upon tests of convergent, discriminant, and nomological validity. These scales were subsequently included as antecedents to residents' perceptions of tourism's impacts, as well as their overall support for tourism in a Structural Equation Model (SEM) analysis. The SEM analysis found all three dimensions of empowerment to have significant relationships with perceptions of tourism's positive and negative impacts with the construct of psychological empowerment being the only empowerment dimension to have a direct and significant relationship with 'support for tourism'. Lastly, the study expanded these areas of research through conducting the study across three counties with varying emphasis placed on sustainable tourism. Floyd, Botetourt, and Franklin County, Virginia were selected for sampling based upon their homogeneity in regards to tourism product, per capita tourism expenditures and economic condition and their heterogeneity in regards to emphasis on sustainable tourism. Nine hundred surveys were distributed across the three counties with 703 ultimately used in the analysis. The results partially confirmed the hypothesis that resident attitudes toward tourism differ by a county's emphasis on sustainable tourism. Future research needs to further investigate sustainable tourism's influence on residents' attitudes toward tourism. / Ph. D.

Some experiments have indicated the possible existence of par ticles with a negative inertial mass. It is shown under which condit ions Weber’s electrodynamics gives rise to this effect. Some specific experiments related to this aspect of Weber’s law are described. Two particles equ ally electrified with charges of the same sign would then move toward one an other if they had negative effective inertial masses. A new concept for nuclear fusion is presented based on the possibility of creating a negative effective inertial mass for ions. It is then considered some properties of the inertial dipole, that is, a system composed by a pair of particles in which one particle has a positive effective inertial mass while the other particle has a negative effective inertial mass. The possible utilization of the inertialdipole as a propulsion system is briefly discussed.

The cognitive biology of mate choice in túngara frogs (Physalaemus pustulosus)

Sexual selection is responsible for a great diversity of elaborate male traits. A general female preference for males that have exaggerated traits drives this process, but the reasons females exhibit this preference are often unclear. Recent advances in understanding signal evolution have emerged from studies of receiver psychology that focus on how receivers perceive and process communication signals. I apply the perspective of receiver psychology to understand female preference for elaborate signals in túngara frogs (Physalaemus pustulosus). Male túngara frogs produce advertisement calls of variable complexity. Females exhibit a strong preference for complex to simple calls, but previous studies have not found consistent patterns of preference between calls of variable complexity. In my doctoral research, I investigate the function of variable complexity in túngara frogs. Specifically, I address the following questions: 1) Are calls of variable complexity especially relevant to females in certain contexts? Do males respond to female behavior by increasing their production of complex calls? 2) Does male to female proximity influence female response to call complexity? 3) Are females constrained by their perceptual biology in discriminating differences in call complexity? 4) Can females remember attractive males over silences between bouts of advertising? Is working memory for attractive males dependent upon signal complexity? And 5) Does signal memorability increase with signal complexity in a linear relationship? These studies provide several new perspectives to an understanding of female preference for elaborate signals. Phonotaxis experiments demonstrate that females use elicitation behaviors to influence male production of complex calls, that proximity influences female response to signal elaboration, that females are constrained by their perceptual biology in discriminating between complex calls, that memory can influence the evolution of signal complexity, and that memorability and signal complexity share a non-linear relationship. / text

Influence of Rotation on the Weight of Gyroscopes as an Explanation for Flyby Anomalies

We consider two models which lead to the prediction of a weight change of gyroscopes depending on the rate of rotation: mass-energy equivalence and Weber's force for gravitation. We calculate the order of magnitude of this effect in both models and show that Weber's model predicts a weight change depending on the spin axis orientation resembling close similarities to observed Earth flyby anomalies. however, our predicted effect is much smaller than the observed effect, which could explain why flyby anomalies were not detected anymore in recent spracecraft trajectories.
