Dricksvattenkvalite i enskilda vattentäkter : Landskrona kommunLarsson, Martin January 2008 (has links)
Denna rapport är en sammanställning av de 100 undersökta enskilda brunnarna i Landskrona kommun vid årsskiftet 05/06. Det utfördes analyser på mikrobiologisk-, nitrat-, nitrit- och även kemiska bekämpningsmedelspåverkan. Syftet med denna rapport är att bearbeta och presentera analysresultaten av de 100 enskilda brunnarna i Landskrona kommun och försöka dra slutsatser kring dessa. Alla analysresultaten sammanställdes i tabeller och så småningom kundes vissa slutsatser dras kring varför resultatet såg ut som det gjorde. Resultatet visade att endast åtta av de 100 brunnarna var otjänliga gällande mikrobiologisk påverkan. Denna parameter är väldigt varierande beroende mycket på yttre omständigheter men det kan ge en indikation på att brunnen inte är tillräckligt tät och därför kan ytvatten tränga in i brunnen. När det gäller nitritpåverkan blev bara en brunn otjänlig. Men när det gällde nitrat var det istället 17 % av brunnarna som visade sig vara otjänliga. Detta är ändå ett relativt bra resultat beroende på hur landskapet ser ut i Skåne med stor påverkan från enskilda avlopp, jordbruk och gödsling. Sist men inte minst analyserades kemiska bekämpningsmedel och gav ett oroande resultat. Hela 35 % av brunnarna var otjänliga pga. kemiska bekämpningsmedel. Detta resultat är inget ovanligt utan kan genom danska undersökningar bara bekräftas. Kemiska bekämpningsmedel kan sprida sig långa sträckor och inte bara vid den plats där ämnena använts eller spillts. De slutsatser som kan dras genom denna undersökning är att grävda brunnar i ytliga jordlager löper störst risk att i framtiden bli otjänliga då dessa utsetts för störst påverkan av föroreningar och ytvatten. Brunnar placerade på gårdsplan är speciellt utsatta och är starkt påverkade av både mikroorganismer och kemiska bekämpningsmedel. När det gäller kemiska bekämpningsmedel är resultaten från Landskrona liknande de från både Danmark och övriga Skåne. / The problem with bad drinking water in wells are a wide problem in an landscape such as Skåne. The purpose of this report is to work up all the data from the different analysis regarding drinking water quality from wells in Landskrona municipality. The parameters that were analysed were microorganisms, the content of nitrate and nitrite and also the concentration of pesticides. Many reports in the field of the subject were collected to get a good picture and a better knowledge of the different problems that lie ahead. This resulted in various conclusions but some of the conclusions was confirmed from other examinations. That wells in the ground are more exposed than wells in mountain. The concentration of pesticides were very high in many of the wells wich shows that this will be a great problem for us to deal with in the future. Examinations in both Denmark and remaining parts of Sweden also show high concentration of pesticides. This only confirm that the problem isn’t just a local here in the municipality.

The celebrated interviews Lenin and Stalin accorded H. G. Wells are a part our century's troubled political history, and as such well-documented both on the Soviet side and in the West. It is less widely known that Wells's interest in Russia antedates the October Revolution, indeed, that he visited that country with his russophile friend Maurice Baring on the eve of the First World War, at a time when Wells had already acquired a remarkable literary reputation. There, he was admired by writers as disparate as Tolstoy, Zamyatin, Nabokov, and Gorky with whom he formed a close friendship, abetted by their mutual love of the Baroness Budberg. These Russian connections of Wells's, as well as his three journeys to Russia and the Soviet Union have not been previously explored against the background of his attitudes to socialism, which in turn played a crucial part in Wells's own search for an ideal society. For Wells, this quest was inseparable from his idea of a federal world state and his perception of the Russian revolutions of 1917 as its harbinger. Although he had many doubts about the Bolshevik regime, he attempted to persuade the English people that Lenin--whom he met in 1920--and his party were the only possible option at a time when few governments were prepared to recognize the Bolsheviks. His own doubts became genuine misgivings in 1934, after his disappointing encounter with Stalin. Nevertheless, Wells's final disenchantment with Russia did not mirror that of other fellow travellers or the period, such as Arthur Koestler and George Orwell, Before his depth in 1946, Wells's profound and inconsistent feelings towards the U.S.S.R. were further complicated by the Second World War and the role the Red Army would play in the struggle against Hitler.

Effects of natural gas well development on songbird reproductive success in mixed-grass prairies of southeastern AlbertaYoo, Jenny 21 August 2014 (has links)
Grassland songbird populations have experienced declines due to habitat loss. In Canada, gas well development continues to fragment and disturb prairie habitat. From 2010-2012, I monitored a total of 374 nests in mixed-grass prairie located in southeastern Alberta. I estimated the probabilities of nesting success relative to gas well infrastructure to test for effects on reproductive success. There was very little effect of well pads on nesting success, while roads had a greater impact. Savannah sparrow and chestnut-collared longspur clutch sizes and fledgling numbers per nest were lower near gas well pads and cattle water sources, suggesting lower quality habitat in these areas. Large-sized predators occurred less in areas with older well pads. Concentrations of new well pads may have greater effects on chestnut-collared longspur reproductive success. Minimizing habitat disturbance surrounding gas well pads, and reducing abundance of roads, should minimize impacts on reproductive success for most grassland songbirds.

Analysis of cholesterol levels of Wells County fourth grade students, 2001-2003Purcell, Jennifer A. January 2004 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to analyze blood cholesterol readings of fourth grade students from Wells County obtained during the Caylor-Nickel Foundation sponsored Health Tour between 2001 and 2003 to determine the relationship between blood cholesterol levels and other health risk indicators.Nine hundred and thirteen fourth grade children participated in Health Tour. Anthropometric and biochemical variables were not available for every student. Serum cholesterol, triglycerides, blood glucose, BMI, and blood pressure were assessed. Fortythree percent of the children were either `at risk for overweight' or were `overweight.' Analysis of the anthropometric and biochemical data indicated a high mean total cholesterol levels and average HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides levels. Meaningful prediction equations to accurately predict total cholesterol values of the fourth grade children could not be formulated with more than 9.5% accuracy. Based on findings in this study, it appears that money would be better spent on the implementation and evaluation of wellness educational programs and physical activity classes for children rather than on costly blood cholesterol analysis. / Department of Family and Consumer Sciences

Onset and Subsequent Transient Phenomena of Liquid Loading in Gas Wells: Experimental Investigation Using a Large Scale Flow LoopWaltrich, Paulo 2012 August 1900 (has links)
Liquid loading in gas wells is generally described as the inability of the well to lift the co-produced liquids up the tubing, which may ultimately kill the well. There is a lack of dedicated models that can mimic the transient features that are typical of liquid loading. Improved characterization of liquid loading in gas wells and enhanced prediction of future well performance can be achieved from the measurements and analyses resulting from this project.
An experimental investigation was carried out to study the onset of liquid loading and the subsequent transient phenomena, using a large scale flow loop to visualize two-phase flow regimes, and to measure pressure and liquid holdup along a 42-m long vertical tube.
From this investigation, it is possible to conclude that liquid loading should not be characterized based on onset criteria alone, and that it may not be a wellbore-only problem, as it would seem that the reservoir also plays a key role in determining if/when/how liquid loading manifests itself.
Additionally, the results from the experimental campaign were used to compare the performance of different wellbore flow simulators. State-of-the-art simulators do not seem to fully capture the nature of liquid loading in vertical tubes. A simplified model is roposed here to evaluate the liquid transport during the transition from one flow regime to another, during the loading sequence.

Determining the Terminal Velocity and the Particle Size of Epoxy Based Fluids in the WellboreTurkmenoglu, Hasan 2012 August 1900 (has links)
This thesis was inspired by the project funded by Bureau of Safety and Environment Enforcement (BSEE) to study the use of epoxy (or any cement alternative) to plug offshore wells damaged by hurricanes. The project focuses on non-cement materials to plug wells that are either destroyed or damaged to an extent where vertical intervention from the original wellhead is no longer possible. The proposed solution to this problem was to drill an offset well and intersect the original borehole at the very top and spot epoxy (or any suitable non-cement plugging material) in the original well. The spotted epoxy then would fall by gravitational force all the way down to the packer and then settle on top of the packer to plug the annulus of the damaged well permanently.
This thesis mainly concentrates on the factors affecting the fall rates and how to correlate them in order to derive an applicable test that can be conducted on the field or lab to calculate the terminal velocity of the known epoxy composition. Determining the settling velocity of the epoxy is crucial due to the fact that epoxy should not set prematurely for a better seal and isolation. The terminal velocity and the recovery for epoxy based plugging fluids were tested by using an experimental setup that was developed for this purpose. The results were also validated by using an alternative experiment setup designed for this purpose. Factors affecting the terminal velocity and recovery of epoxy were studied in this research since the settling velocity of the epoxy is crucial because epoxy should not set prematurely for a better seal and isolation. The study was conducted by using an experiment setup that was specially developed for terminal velocity and recovery calculations for plugging fluids. Results obtained from the experiment setup were successfully correlated to epoxy's composition for estimating the terminal velocity of the mixture.
