O hipertexto, advindo principalmente por meio do ambiente Web, elevou ainda mais a complexidade do tratamento informacional. A popularização da Internet fez com que a Web se tornasse mais interativa e colaborativa tornando comum a utilização de sistemas wiki para o gerenciamento informacional. Idealizada por Tim Berners-Lee, surge a iniciativa da Web Semântica, na qual as máquinas são capazes de analisar os dados presentes na rede. Nesse contexto aparecem os wikis semânticos, caracterizados por fazerem uso das tecnologias da Web Semântica. Diante desse cenário, considera-se que a Ciência da Informação, que já se preocupa com o desenvolvimento da Web e da Web Semântica, deve também se preocupar com os wikis semânticos. Assim, por meio de uma pesquisa descritiva e exploratória, objetivou-se explorar, apresentar e descrever as características dos wikis semânticos com enfoque nas atividades de descrição, de recuperação e de intercâmbio de informações apoiadas em tecnologias da Web Semântica, visando a favorecer o entendimento, a discussão e o uso dessas tecnologias em ambientes informacionais digitais. Após uma apresentação sobre as raízes históricas da Web Semântica, são destacados os padrões de representação, codificação, descrição, relação e consulta de dados estruturados (URI, XML, RDF, RDFS, OWL e SPARQL) que, junto a outras tecnologias, formam a base da Web Semântica e apoiam o funcionamento dos wikis semânticos. Os wikis semânticos são apresentados e definidos como sistemas wiki que se utilizam de tecnologias da Web Semântica para incorporar conhecimento formalizado, conteúdo, estruturas e links em suas páginas. Após essa etapa, são descritas as principais atividades de descrição, de recuperação e de intercâmbio de informações no Semantic MediaWiki, o wiki semântico mais utilizado até o momento. Como considerações finais, entende-se que os wikis semânticos favorecem o entendimento, a discussão e o uso de tecnologias da Web Semântica em ambientes informacionais digitais. / Due to the development of Information and Communication Technologies, Information Science has been forced to rethink the traditional posture of information management. Hypertext, arising mainly through the Web environment, further increased the complexity of the information handling. The popularization of the Internet has led the Web to a more interactive and a more collaborative environment, bringing wiki systems, for example, to manage information in a collaborative way. Conceived by Tim Berners-Lee, there is the Semantic Web initiative in which machines are able to analyze data on the network. In this context, semantic wikis arise: wikis characterized by the use of Semantic Web technologies. Therefore, we believe that Information Science, which cares about the development of the Web and the Semantic Web, should also care about semantic wikis. Thus, by a descriptive and an exploratory research, the objective is to explore, to present and to describe the characteristics of the semantic wikis on the activities of representation, retrieval and exchange of information supported by Semantic Web technologies in order to facilitate the understanding, the discussion, and the use of these technologies in digital information environments. After a presentation about the origins of the Semantic Web, we highlight the data representation, encoding, description, relation, and query standards (URI, XML, RDF, RDFS, OWL and SPARQL) which, with other technologies, form the basis of the Semantic Web and support the functioning of semantic wikis. Semantic wikis are presented and defined as wiki systems that use Semantic Web technologies in order to incorporate formalized knowledge, content, structure and links on their pages. After that, we describe the main activities for information description, retrieval and interchange on Semantic MediaWiki, the most popular and most used semantic wiki engine so far. As conclusion, we consider that semantic wikis can promote understanding, discussions, and use of Semantic Web technologies in digital information environments. / FAPESP: 2011/15085-6

The Bureaucracy of Social Media - An Empirical Account in Organizations

This thesis examines organizational use of social media. It focuses on developing an understanding of the ways by which social media are used within formal organizational settings. From the vantage point of this thesis such an understanding can be achieved by looking at tensions and incompatibilities that might potentially exist between social media and organization because of their distinct characteristics. It is argued that the distinct characteristics of social media (e.g. openness, transparency, flexibility, etc.) and organization (e.g., hierarchy, formal relationships, standard procedures, etc.) may engender tensions and incompatibilities that affect the ways of using social media and their potential in organizations. The main premise here is that the possibilities, behaviors, and practices afforded by social media are recognizably different in nature from common and established organizational practices, behaviors, norms, and routines. Through a structurational understanding of organizational use of social media, influenced by Giddens’ theory of structuration and Orlikowski’s practice lens for studying technology use, this thesis offers the perspective of immiscibility to capture tensions and incompatibilities driven by the distinctive characteristics of social media and organization. It basically offers a way of seeing social media use in organizations as a dynamic, in- practice interplay between social media and organization characteristics. One key argument in this thesis is that the immiscible interplay of social media and organization, produces, at least in transition, ‘a bureaucracy of social media’. Social media, it is argued, are used in ways that are essentially bureaucratic, reflecting and also reinforcing established characteristics of formal organizations through the production and reproduction of structures which are driven by the immiscible interplay. The development of such an understanding was achieved through multiple research studies focusing on the use of the wiki technology for knowledge collaboration and sharing in two large, multinational organizations: CCC and IBM. A number of qualitative methods were used in these studies to collect empirical evidence from the two organizations including interviews, field visits, observations, and document analysis. The overarching contribution of this thesis centers on offering a unique way of understanding organizational use of social media by putting forward tensions and incompatibilities between social media and organization and also by providing an understanding of how such tensions and incompatibilities affect the potential for change by social media.

A faceted browsing interface for diverse Large-Scale RDF Datasets

Magíster en Ciencias, Mención Computación. / Las bases de conocimiento en RDF contienen información acerca de millones de recursos, las cuales son consultadas utilizando el lenguaje estándar de consultas para RDF: SPARQL. Sin embargo, esta información no está accesible fácilmente porque requiere conocer el lenguaje SPARQL y la estructura de los datos a consultar; requisitos que no cumple un usuario común de internet. Se propone una interfaz de navegación por facetas para estos datos de gran tamaño que no requiere conocimientos previos de la estructura ni de SPARQL. La navegación por facetas consiste en agregar filtros (conocidos como facetas) para mostrar únicamente los elementos que cumplen los requisitos. Interfaces de navegación por facetas para RDF existentes no escalan bien para las bases de conocimientos actuales. Se propone un nuevo sistema que crea índices para búsquedas fáciles y rápidas sobre los datos, permitiendo calcular y sugerir facetas al usuario. Para validar la escalabilidad y eficiencia del sistema, se escogió Wikidata como la base de datos de gran tamaño para realizar los experimentos de desempeño. Luego, se realizó un estudio de usuarios para evaluar la usabilidad e interacción del sistema, los resultados obtenidos muestran en qué aspectos el sistema desempeña bien y cuáles pueden ser mejorados. Un prototipo final junto a un cuestionario fue enviado a contribuidores de Wikidata para descubrir como este sistema puede ayudar a la comunidad.

Interação com Wikis por meio de Mensageiros Instantâneos / Wiki Interation using Instant Messaging Bots

A utilização da Internet cresceu amplamente nos últimos anos e tem propiciado o desenvolvimento de diversas ferramentas de comunicação via web. Têm se destacado, de maneira especial, as ferramentas que possibilitam a disponibilização online de conteúdos diversos, criados pelos próprios usuários, como as wikis. O sucesso obtido pelas wikis deve-se, em grande parte, à pequena quantidade de esforço necessário para a edição das páginas, indicando que esta característica é muito apreciada pelos usuários. Visando tornar o processo de edição de wikis ainda mais ágil, este trabalho apresenta uma proposta de como os mensageiros instantâneos podem auxiliar nesta tarefa. Assim, uma nova nova forma de interação no processo de edição de wikis, por meio de Mensageiro Instantâneo, foi projetada e implementada. Essa forma de interação proposta altera a forma de interação com wikis convencional, no sentido de possibilitar que o autor do conteúdo a ser editado na wiki não necessite mudar de seu ambiente de comunicação, que atualmente tem sido muito utilizado, o de troca de mensagens por meio do mensageiro instantâneo. Além disso, esta pesquisa possibilitou a identificação de diversas vantagens e desvantagens da utilização de bots de mensageiros instantâneos, encontradas na literatura, bem como durante os experimentos e estudos de caso realizados / The Internet usage has grown significantly in recent years and has fomented the development of several communication tools via web. Tools that make available the various online contents created by the users, such as wikis should be especially highlighted. The success achieved by wikis is due in large extent to the small amount of effort required to edit pages. This is an indicator that this feature is very appreciated by users. In order to make the editing process of wikis even faster, this work presents a proposal of using integrated Instant Messaging tools features with wikis. Thus, a new means of interaction in the process of editing in wikis, via Instant Messenger, was designed and implemented. This proposed means of interaction augments the way of interaction with conventional wikis, by enabling authors to edit the wiki content without having to shift from his/her communication environment in use. This proposal is supported by the fact that Instant Messaging systems have been widely used and adopted. Moreover, this research provides evidences to help the identification of advantages and disadvantages of the use of bots in Instant Messaging, from the results of the experiments and case studies conducted
