Estudo de um Sistema de Telefonia sem Infraestrutura através de Modelagem e Simulação baseada em Agentes / Study of an Infrastructureless Communication System through Agent-based Modeling and Simulation.

Oliveira, André Luiz Machado de 14 September 2012 (has links)
The technological development of Wireless Networks leads to more intelligent networks structures. One can imagine a mobile data system consisting of autonomous mobile devices that do not require any pre-established infrastructure to exchange information one with another, limited mainly by the transmission radius. Thus, data could be forwarded from node to node, forming a multihop network. The absence of a central entity could also improve fault tolerance by allowing redundant paths for nodes to communicate. We analyzed the performance of the system in different scenarios and system behavior regarding parameters variations such as transmission radius, interferences, the number of nodes and maximum allowed number of hops (TTL), and tested communication strategies with fixed radius, variable radius, minimum number of neighbors to transmit, etc., through modeling and simulation-based agents. In general, variable radius strategy had the best rate of incoming messages and the lowest average number of hops to the destination. However it presented the higher level of system energy. In one hand, fixed radius strategy presented the lowest total energy expended by the system to send messages, but, in the other hand, the rate of incoming messages was lower. Furthermore, we discovered the main causes of packet losses are associated with increased mobility, reducing the TTL and interference, each of which contributes more or less in accordance with the scenario.

Comparação entre modelos empíricos e semi-empíricos de predição de cobertura móvel celular: estudo de caso em ambiente outdoor / Comparison among empiric and semi-empiric models of prediction of cellular mobile covering: study of case in outdoor environment

Elias, Marcelo Eustáquio Pereira 14 January 2005 (has links)
A comparative study among the main empiric and semi-empiric models of prediction of signal leveI for cellular mobile communications is described in this work. Measurements of covering outdoor in an urban environment were compared to the simulated results from the models of Okumura-Hata, Lee, Ikegami, Walfisch-Bertoni and Walfisch-Ikegami. The measurements of received signal level were accomplished in some streets of the city of Conceição das Alagoas, MG, starting from the only radio base station of the city, operating in the A band with AMPS/TDMA technology. The 328-analog control channel was used as test carrier. The measurements were carried out using some equipment installed in a vehicle, in different positions in relation to the radio base station, in order to obtain covering profile in different circunstances such as line-of-sight, non line-of-sight, and partial obstruction. The model of Ikegami was shown appropriate for prediction of the received signal levels in the studied environment, exhibiting an average deviation of 5,81 dB in relation to the accomplished measurements.

Aspects of Interface between Information Theory and Signal Processing with Applications to Wireless Communications

Park, Sang Woo 14 March 2013 (has links)
This dissertation studies several aspects of the interface between information theory and signal processing. Several new and existing results in information theory are researched from the perspective of signal processing. Similarly, some fundamental results in signal processing and statistics are studied from the information theoretic viewpoint. The first part of this dissertation focuses on illustrating the equivalence between Stein's identity and De Bruijn's identity, and providing two extensions of De Bruijn's identity. First, it is shown that Stein's identity is equivalent to De Bruijn's identity in additive noise channels with specific conditions. Second, for arbitrary but fixed input and noise distributions, and an additive noise channel model, the first derivative of the differential entropy is expressed as a function of the posterior mean, and the second derivative of the differential entropy is expressed in terms of a function of Fisher information. Several applications over a number of fields, such as statistical estimation theory, signal processing and information theory, are presented to support the usefulness of the results developed in Section 2. The second part of this dissertation focuses on three contributions. First, a connection between the result, proposed by Stoica and Babu, and the recent information theoretic results, the worst additive noise lemma and the isoperimetric inequality for entropies, is illustrated. Second, information theoretic and estimation theoretic justifications for the fact that the Gaussian assumption leads to the largest Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) is presented. Third, a slight extension of this result to the more general framework of correlated observations is shown. The third part of this dissertation concentrates on deriving an alternative proof for an extremal entropy inequality (EEI), originally proposed by Liu and Viswanath. Compared with the proofs, presented by Liu and Viswanath, the proposed alternative proof is simpler, more direct, and more information-theoretic. An additional application for the extremal inequality is also provided. Moreover, this section illustrates not only the usefulness of the EEI but also a novel method to approach applications such as the capacity of the vector Gaussian broadcast channel, the lower bound of the achievable rate for distributed source coding with a single quadratic distortion constraint, and the secrecy capacity of the Gaussian wire-tap channel. Finally, a unifying variational and novel approach for proving fundamental information theoretic inequalities is proposed. Fundamental information theory results such as the maximization of differential entropy, minimization of Fisher information (Cramer-Rao inequality), worst additive noise lemma, entropy power inequality (EPI), and EEI are interpreted as functional problems and proved within the framework of calculus of variations. Several extensions and applications of the proposed results are briefly mentioned.

Analysis and Design of Vehicular Networks

Wu, Hao 18 November 2005 (has links)
Advances in computing and wireless communication technologies have increased interest in smart vehicles, vehicles equipped with significant computing, communication and sensing capabilities to provide services to travelers. Smart vehicles can be exploited to improve driving safety and comfort as well as optimize surface transportation systems. Wireless communications among vehicles and between vehicles and roadside infrastructures represent an important class of vehicle communications. One can envision creating an integrated radio network leveraging various wireless technologies that work together in a seamless fashion. Based on cost-performance tradeoffs, different network configurations may be appropriate for different environments. An understanding of the properties of different vehicular network architectures is absolutely necessary before services can be successfully deployed. Based on this understanding, efficient data services (e.g., data dissemination services) can be designed to accommodate application requirements. This thesis examines several research topics concerning both the evaluation and design of vehicular networks. We explore the properties of vehicle-to-vehicle (v2v) communications. We study the spatial propagation of information along the road using v2v communications. Our analysis identifies the vehicle traffic characteristics that significantly affect information propagation. We also evaluate the feasibility of propagating information along a highway. Several design alternatives exist to build infrastructure-based vehicular networks. Their characteristics have been evaluated in a realistic vehicular environment. Based on these evaluations, we have developed some insights into the design of future broadband vehicular networks capable of adapting to varying vehicle traffic conditions. Based on the above analysis, opportunistic forwarding that exploit vehicle mobility to overcome vehicular network partitioning appears to be a viable approach for data dissemination using v2v communications for applications that can tolerate some data loss and delay. We introduce a methodology to design enhanced opportunistic forwarding algorithms. Practical algorithms derived from this methodology have exhibited different performance/overhead tradeoffs. An in-depth understanding of wireless communication performance in a vehicular environment is necessary to provide the groundwork for realizing reliable mobile communication services. We have conducted an extensive set of field experiments to uncover the performance of short-range communications between vehicles and between vehicles and roadside stations in a specific highway scenario.

Efficient tranceiver techniques for interference and fading mitigation in wireless communication systems / Νέες αποδοτικές τεχνικές εκπομπής και λήψης για μείωση παρεμβολών σε ασύρματα δίκτυα επικοινωνίας

Βλάχος, Ευάγγελος 12 December 2014 (has links)
Wireless communication systems require advanced techniques at the transmitter and at the receiver that improve the performance in hostile radio environments. The received signal is significantly distorted due to the dynamic nature of the wireless channel caused by multipath fading and Doppler spread. In order to mitigate the negative impact of the channel to the received signal quality, techniques as equalization and diversity are usually employed in the system design. During the transmission, the phenomenon of inter-symbol interference (ISI) occurs at the receiver due to the time dispersion of the involved channels. Hence, several delayed replicas of previous symbols interfere with the current symbol. Equalization is usually employed in order to combat the effect of the ISI. Several implementations for equalization filters have been proposed, including linear and non-linear processing, providing complexity-performance trade-offs. It is known that the length of the equalization filter determines the complexity of the technique. Since the wireless channels are characterized by long and sparse impulse responses, the conventional equalizers require high computational complexity due to the large size of their filters. In this dissertation, we have further investigated the long standing problem of equalization in light of the recently derived theory of compressed sampling (CS) for sparse and redundant representations. The developed heuristic algorithms for equalization, can exploit either the sparsity of the channel impulse response (CIR), or the sparsity of the equalizer filters, in order to derive efficient implementation designs. To this end, building on basis pursuit and matching pursuit techniques new equalization schemes have been proposed that exhibit considerable computational savings, increased performance properties and short training sequence requirements. Our main contribution for this part is the Stochastic Gradient Pursuit algorithm for sparse adaptive equalization. An alternative approach to combat ISI is based on the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system. In this system, the entire channel is divided into many narrow subchannels, so as the transmitted signals to be orthogonal to each other, despite their spectral overlap. However, in the case of doubly selective channels, the Doppler effect destroys the orthogonality between subcarriers. Thus, similarly to ISI, the effect of intercarrier interference (ICI) is introduced at the receiver, where symbols which belong to other subcarriers interfere with the current one. Considering this problem, we have developed iterative algorithms which recursively cancels the ICI at the receiver, providing performance-complexity trade-offs. For low or medium Doppler spreads, the typical approach is to approximate the frequency-domain channel matrix with a banded one. On this premise, we derived reduced-rank preconditioned conjugate gradient (PCG) algorithms in order to estimate the equalization matrix with a reduced number of iterations. Also developed an improved PCG algorithm with the same complexity order, using the Galerkin projections theory. However, in rapidly changing environments, a severe ICI is introduced and the banded approximation results in significant performance degradation. In order to recover this performance loss, we developed regularized estimation framework for ICI equalization, with linear complexity with respect the the number of the subcarriers. Moreover, we proposed a new equalization technique which has the potential to completely cancel the ICI. This approach works in a successive manner through a number of stages, conveying from the fully-connected ordered successive interference cancellation architecture (OSIC) in order to fully suppress the residual interference at each stage of the equalizer. On the other hand, diversity can improve the performance of the communication system by sending the information symbols through multiple signal paths, each of which fades independently. One approach to obtain diversity is through cooperative transmission, considering a group of nearby terminals (relays) as forming one virtual antenna array and applying a spatial beamforming technique so as to optimize the communication via them. Such beamforming techniques differ from their classical counterparts where the array elements are located in a common processing unit, due to the distribution of the relays in the space. In this setting, we developed new distributed algorithms which enable the relay cooperation for the computation of the beamforming weights leveraging the computational abilities of the relays. Each relay can estimate only the corresponding entry of the principal eigenvector, combining data from its network neighbours. The proposed algorithms are applied to two distributed beamforming schemes for relay networks. In the first scheme, the beamforming vector is computed through minimization of a total transmit power subject to the receiver quality-of-service (QoS) constraint. In the second scheme, the beamforming weights are obtained through maximization of the receiver SNR subject to a total transmit power constraint. Moreover, the proposed algorithms operate blindly, implying that no training data are required to be transmitted to the relays, and adaptively, exhibiting a quite short convergence period.

Πόγκας, Νίκος 25 June 2007 (has links)
The research objective of this thesis is a complete solution so as to support the implementation of telecommunication applications in wireless networks that operate without the presence of fixed infrastructure. Such a network, cited as Mobile Ad-hoc Network (MANET) in international literature, is a self-organized, auto-configured wireless network with multi-hop routing paths where its structure is modified dynamically due to node mobility and topological changes. In order to meet the above requirements a new communication framework for MANET networks is presented, which consists of the adaptation of communication-related energy reduction techniques, development of a specialized routing protocol at the network layer, modifications of the TCP protocol at the transport layer and the implementation of a novel network management protocol. The performance of the proposed protocol stack is satisfactory in dynamic network topologies with increased node mobility, whereas the node energy consumption remains in low levels. The presented algorithms and protocols are designed and implemented considering the constraints and requirements of an embedded system, while their performance and reliability is proved theoretically and by simulation results.

Cooperative DVB-H: Raptor-Network Coding Protocols for Reliable and Energy Efficient Multimedia Communications

BENACEM, Lucien 05 August 2010 (has links)
Reliable and energy-efficient delivery of multimedia to mobile terminals in dynamic networks is a very challenging problem. In this thesis, we focus on a cooperative extension to the Digital Video Broadcasting – Handheld (DVB-H) standard, forming a cooperative broadcast network whereby terminal-to-terminal cooperation creates a distributed form of multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) that supplements existing fixed network infrastructure. First, we develop a novel and computationally-efficient hierarchical Markov model that is able to accurately perform a cross-layer packet error mapping between the physical and transport layers of the DVB-H/IPDC (IP DataCast) protocol stack. We then construct a discrete-event simulator in MATLAB® that incorporates all of the necessary modules to conduct dynamic multiterminal network simulations. Next, the convergence of cooperative wireless communication, Raptor application layer forward error correction (AL-FEC) and Network Coding (NC) is examined. Originally proposed for broadcasting over the Internet, the application of Raptor codes to wireless cooperative communications networks has been limited to date, but they have been mandated for use in DVB-H. Network coding is used to reduce energy consumption by opportunistically recombining and rebroadcasting required combinations of packets. Two novel coding-enabled cooperative relaying protocols are developed for multicast and multiple unicast file distribution scenarios that are transparent, fully distributed, and backwards compatible with today's systems. Our protocols are able to exploit several different forms of diversity inherent to modern wireless networks, including spatial diversity, radio interface diversity, and symbol diversity. Extensive simulations show that our protocols simultaneously achieve breakthroughs in network energy efficiency and reliability for different terminal classes and densities, allowing greatly improved user experiences. / Thesis (Master, Electrical & Computer Engineering) -- Queen's University, 2010-08-03 19:45:54.943

The evolution of the Home Area Network (HAN) is lead by the proliferation of connected devices inside the home and the deployment of high broadband access network which now allows the delivery of services that can exceed 1Gbit/s. To ensure efficient in-house exchanges, the HAN has to move rapidly toward multi-Gigabit/s connections, in particular the wireless connectivity generally preferred by the customers. Current wireless systems have limited capacities, but new radio standards delivering data-rates up to 7Gbit/s are emerging. Nevertheless, as they address the unlicensed millimeter-wave band, from 57 to 66 GHz, their radio coverage is limited to a single room. Indeed, at such frequencies, the free-space losses are high and the waves do not cross the walls. This thesis proposes to solve this problem by means of the Radio over Fiber (RoF) technology. This consists in capturing the 60GHz radio signals emitted in one room, converting them into optical signals for transmission through optical fibers, and reemitting them in another room. Thus, several RoF transducers will be installed in the home and interconnected by a suitable optical infrastructure to create systems acting at the same time as repeaters and as distribution systems. From the viewpoint of the HAN market, such systems will be competitive only if they are low cost. As a consequence, this work focuses on direct modulation with direct detection (IM-DD) at Intermediate Frequency (IF). In other words, the 60GHz signal is down-converted at a lower frequency around 5GHz before the laser modulation and up-converted to 60GHz after the photodetection. Concerning the optical fiber, silica multimode fiber (MMF) is privileged as it allows the use of low cost and largely available optoelectronic devices working at 850nm.The thesis proposes different RoF architectures, from point-to-point interconnecting two rooms to multipoint-to-multipoint acting as logical buses. After an analog characterization of the optoelectronic components, the RoF link and the domestic cable, these architectures are designed, built and characterized step by step using OFDM modulation according to existing wireless 60GHz standards. Real-time transmissions between commercial devices have also been performed to validate these architectures. Moreover, advanced RoF infrastructures are proposed. First, the RoF systems can be easily improved if the access to their optical media is managed by the radio MAC layer. This approach is therefore studied showing its feasibility. Secondly, an optical system, seen by users as a premium product, has to support the legacy home services commonly used as well as the new ones that could emerge in the future. Thus, innovative multiservice and multiformat infrastructures conveying on a unique optical cable wired IP data, broadcast terrestrial or satellite television, the 60GHz wireless connectivity, and specific formats as HDMI signals are proposed and tested

Optical wireless communications with optical power and dynamic range constraints

Yu, Zhenhua 22 May 2014 (has links)
Along with the rapidly increasing demand for wireless data while more and more crowded radio frequency (RF) spectrum, optical wireless communications (OWC) become a promising candidate to complement conventional RF communications, especially for indoor short and medium range data transmissions. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is considered for OWC due to its ability to boost data rates. However, the average emitted optical power and dynamic range of driving signals of LEDs are two major constraints in OWC. OFDM waveforms exhibits high upper and lower peak-to-average power ratios (PAPRs), which make OFDM signals optical power inefficient and easy to violate the dynamic range of LEDs, resulting clipping and nonlinear distortions. In this dissertation, we analyze and design optical power and dynamic range constrained OWC systems, for which OFDM is our major subject. We first derive distributions of upper PAPR and lower PAPR of OWC-OFDM signals. Then we analyze the clipped OFDM signals in term of error vector magnitude (EVM), signal-to-distortion ratio (SDR), and achievable data rates under both optical power and dynamic range constraints. The next part of this dissertation is the OFDM system design for visible light communications (VLC) considering illumination requirement. We investigate the illumination-to-communication efficiency (ICE) in VLC-OFDM, and design the brightness control and flickering mitigation schemes for VLC-OFDM. In the end, to reduce the complexity of driving circuits of LEDs , we propose using delta-sigma modulators in VLC-OFDM systems to convert continuous magnitude OFDM symbols into two-level LED driver signals without loss of the communication theory advantages of OFDM.
