This is a qualitative study that explores the strategies used by a woman principal to build a successful high school. Despite the plethora of gender supportive policies in South Africa women are still underrepresented in school management positions. Those who do shatter the glass ceiling face gender discrimination resulting from societal and cultural stereotypes. This study aims to tell the story of a woman principal who battled social, patriarchal and institutional odds and still succeeded as a leader. The findings reveal that the principal relied on her womanly attributes of caring, empathy, knowing the community and involving parents. In demonstrating support for the community in which she worked and in having the courage to care she was able to transform her school. This study shows that caring is a form of power. She is a transformational leader who managed to change the school culture from being dysfunctional to being successful. Collaboration and staff development are the other strategies that led to the success of the school managed by Debra, the woman principal in this study. Narrative inquiry as qualitative research approach was employed in order to explore the experiences of Debra, as the principal in this study is named. Purposive sampling was used for the selection of the participant. Data was collected by means of in-depth and semi-structured interviews supported by school documents. Transformational Leadership Theory, as described by Bass (1999), provided guidance for conceptualizing and analysing the leadership strategies used by the principal. À partir d’une pratique clinique au sein d’un Service Médico-Psychologique Régional d’une maison d’arrêt, cette thèse vient interroger la question de la perversion chez la femme. Si on constate de nombreuses controverses sur ce sujet, faut-il pour autant dire que la femme échappe à la perversion ? Souvent considérées comme victimes passives, le rôle de ces femmes dans le scénario criminel est perçu comme secondaire, au service d’un autre, de son compagnon par exemple. Si dans nos imaginaires, la perversion est associée aux hommes, la part de destructivité chez la femme a longtemps été niée, alors qu’historiquement et cliniquement, elle est manifeste. Par leurs mises en acte, ces femmes témoigneraient d’une impasse quant à leur construction subjective. C’est pourquoi nous nous intéresserons tout d’abord aux enjeux et aux incidences de la période préoedipienne sur leur devenir-femme. Leur soumission à un Autre ouvrira une réflexion sur la notion de complicité comme véritable statut, avec l’importance de la présence du regard d’un Autre à provoquer ou à angoisser. À travers la présentation de situations cliniques, je vais tenter d’aborder différentes figures féminines de la perversion. Du meurtre d’enfant aux violences sexuelles commises par des mères, en passant par la passion amoureuse et la séduction perverse, nous nous confronterons également à la violence barbare de jeunes adolescentes.La diversité des cas cliniques souligne la complexité de cette question de la perversion chez la femme. La place de la haine, du sacrifice à un Autre, et enfin de la perversion des idéaux seront interrogés, avec notamment la mise en évidence comme hypothèse, l’impossibilité de constituer un fantasme matricide structurant chez ces femmes qui ont alors recours, dans le réel, à des passages à l’acte pervers. / From a clinical practice in a Regional Medical Psychological department in a prison, this thesis is questioning about female perversion. Even if we can notice many controversies about this subject, does it mean that women can escape perversion? Often considered as passive victims, these women have in the criminal scenario a role seen as secondary, in the service of someone else, for example of their partners. If in our imagination,perversion is linked to men, the part of destructiveness among women has been denied for a long time even if it is evident historically and clinically. By acting, these women would show an impasse concerning their subjective construction. That’s why, firstly, we will be interested in the issues ans impacts of the preoedipean period on their woman becoming. Their submission to an other will make people think about the notion of complicity as a real status, with the importance of the presence of an Other to provoke or distress. I’m going to talk about many different perversion female figures through the presentation of clinical situations. From the child murder to the sexual abuse committed by mothers, from love passion to perverses eduction, we will also be confronted with the barbarous violence of young female teenagers. The diversity of clinical cases underlines the complexity of the woman perversion. We will question about the importance of hatred, of sacrifice to an other and finally about ideals perversion, emphasizing as hypothesis the impossibility of constituting aformative matricide fantasy among these women who are really doing perverse actions.

In the 70-year history of the weekly magazine Vlasta, there were three main divisions that fundamentally influenced the personnel department, as well as the choice of topics. This diploma thesis is focused in the years 1988-1991. That is, before and after the Velvet Revolution. After 1989 there were changes in the editorial office, changes in the topics of articles (influenced by propaganda) and changes in advertising and graphic design. This thesis deals with these three lines. The main goal is to find out how the working environment in the weekly magazine Vlasta has changed during the years under review and how did the content changed. The first part deals with the functioning of the editorial office two years before the change of régime and the subsequent change in the magazine environment after 1989. The thesis is focused on the work of individual editors, but also on what topics they chose and why.

The Diploma thesis "Women in Jesus' public ministry in the Gospel of Luke (Luke 8:1- 3; 10:38-42; 23:49)" analyzes 3 selected extracts from the Gospel of St. Lukas specifically focusing on women. Those accompanied Jesus, Marie and Martha and the women under the cross at the time of his crucifixion. The selected texts have been analyzed individually but also in relationship to their context in the whole Gospel of St. Lukas. Lukas writes about women more often than other Evangelists. His view is in this way completely remarkable and progresive for this time, he describes women more positively than their male counterparts. Lukas progressivness is demonstrated in small segments of his writing which exemplifies his undrestanding of the role of women in Grecian, Roman or Jewish societies. Selected extracts from the Gospel of Lukas each, in thier own way, show the important role of women in Jesus' public activity. Among Jesus' followers, as has been recorded by Lukas, women belonged to this group they listened to his words, supported him and accompanied him on his way to the cross. Lukas tries to explain the meaning which God intended for women in the history of the path to Salvation.

Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / Most poverty studies ignore the dimension of time and are merely concerned if an individual meets certain money-metric or non-income welfare (e.g., access to services and asset ownership) criteria. They fail to recognise the limited time (24hours per day) available to complete tasks and the added difficulties they have even though there is an abundance of money-metric and asset-related non-money-metric poverty studies. (Kim et al. 2014:1). For example, individuals/households deemed poor by standard measures cannot afford market alternatives to assist them with non-market work (like childcare). Therefore, they find themselves spending all their time in market and non-market work without taking time for rest and improving themselves. Recognising non-market work and the allocation of time allows for a greater understanding into the role of women and Africans whose non-market work are unrecognised by standard economic measures such as GDP (Ferrant 2014:1). There are also only a few in-depth studies on time poverty, but they fail to utilise the most current data. Therefore, this study seeks to provide insights into how household production impacts on South African welfare. It explores the income, time poor and the extent of time allocation differences for various personal characteristics. It estimates the likelihood of time poverty based on an individual’s time schedule and the factors which most likely results in time poverty.

The operas by playwright W. S. Gilbert and composer Arthur Sullivan have been considered some of the most popular and successful pieces of musical theatre in the English language. While their joint creative output neared perfection, Gilbert and Sullivan's working relationship was fraught with conflict. The two men's opposing personalities led them to favor disparate styles and work towards different goals. However, the ability to balance contrasting tones, such as sarcasm and sympathy, resulted in their overwhelming success. I analyze this "winning formula" by looking at the influence of feminism, especially the "New Woman" literary movement, on the works of Gilbert & Sullivan. Gilbert frequently used common female stereotypes and gave his female characters humorous yet demeaning flaws that kept the audience from fully admiring them. Sullivan, on the other hand, countered Gilbert's derisive attitude by composing sophisticated music for the female characters, granting emotional depth and a certain level of respectability. The struggle between Gilbert's mocking tone and Sullivan's empathetic music led to the men's ultimate success. I examine Gilbert's female characters, explore the counteractive effect of Sullivan's music, and analyze Princess Ida—their opera most directly related to the New Woman—in depth.

Identity, who we are, is at the core of every human being, thus at the core of every character from every play. How the character identifies his self through gender and sexual identity will shape both physical and emotional choices that an actor will make through the rehearsal process. As an actor, it is absolutely imperative to resist the urge to pass judgment on the characters we portray. As more characters in modern drama are openly gay, there is an increasing urge for an actor to fall into campy stereotypes. Through a performance of the role of Molina in Manuel Puig's Kiss of the Spider Woman, this thesis will examine the blurring line of gender identity of the leading man in contemporary drama and explore the challenges of portraying a feminine man in a non-stereotypical way, remaining true to the identification of the character. A thorough historical analysis presents a look at the evolution of the homosexual throughout modern drama, from self-loathing party boys of the seventies to ordinary fathers, husbands, and sons in modern households. A structural analysis of Puig's text will aid in the choices made by the actor. Lastly, a complete character analysis will examine the psychological motivations behind Molina's actions as well as the changes in his gender and sexual identity throughout the piece. This thesis will culminate in a comprehensive development, rehearsal and performance journal, which will document and address challenges, discoveries, failures and victories during the production process.
