High-Resolution Studies of the ùA₂– X̃¹A₁Electronic Transition of Formaldehyde: Spectroscopy and Photochemistry

Formaldehyde (HCHO) plays a primary role in tropospheric chemistry. Its photochemical activity is an important source of radical species such as HCO, H, and subsequently HO2 as well as molecular hydrogen and carbon monoxide. As a source of hydrogen radicals (HOx = OH + HO2), HCHO plays a significant role in the oxidative capacity of the atmosphere, and an important part in the interrelated chemistries of ozone and the HOx and NOx (NO + NO2) cycles. Accurate atmospheric photolysis rates of HCHO are thus required in order to properly model tropospheric chemistry. Despite extensive studies HCHO’s spectroscopy and photochemistry remains to be well characterized. Absolute room temperature absorption cross sections for the A1A2 – X1A1 electronic transition of formaldehyde have been measured over the spectral range 30285 – 32890 cm-1 (304 – 330 nm) using ultraviolet (UV) laser absorption spectroscopy. Absorption cross sections were obtained at an instrumental resolution better than 0.09 cm-1 which is slightly broader than the Doppler width of a rotational line of HCHO at 300K (~0.07 cm-1) and so we were able to resolve all but the most closely spaced lines. Qualitative comparisons with spectral simulations show varying agreement depending on vibronic band. Refined state origins and transition dipole moments for each vibronic band have been reported. There is evidence of areas of perturbation and the need to optimize higher order spectral constants. Pressure broadening parameters have been measured and increase with the strength of intermolecular interaction between formaldehyde and the collision partner. Comparisons between the available high-resolution studies and spectral simulations indicate that the HCHO absorption cross section is still not well characterized. The relative quantum yield for the production of radical products, H+HCO, from the UV photolysis of formaldehyde (HCHO) has been measured directly using a Pulsed Laser Photolysis – Pulsed Laser Induced Fluorescence (PLP – PLIF) technique across the same spectral region. Relative yields were normalized to a value of 0.69 at 31750 cm-1 based on the current NASA-JPL recommendation. The resulting absolute radical quantum yields agree well with previous experimental studies and show more wavelength dependent behavior than the recommendation. This provides support for the complicated competition among the various HCHO dissociation pathways.

Effects of No-Tillage on Crop Yields and Net Returns Across the United States

Farmers are always looking for ways to increase yields and profits and no-tillage may be a way to achieve this goal. However, a comprehensive study of the performance of no-tillage yields relative to conventional tillage yields and their net returns is lacking. This study evaluated the potential factors that influence differences in conventional tillage and no-tillage yields and net returns as explained by such factors as time, crop, precipitation, soil texture and geographic region. Data were collected from 442 paired tillage experiments growing corn, soybeans, cotton, oats, wheat and sorghum published in three refereed journals. Data were evaluated using a mixed model and logit model respectively, to evaluate differences in mean yields and downside risk with no-tillage compared to tillage. Sorghum and wheat were found to have higher no-tillage yields relative to tillage. No-tillage was also found to outperform conventional tillage in the southern United States with just the opposite occurring in the northern U.S. A silty soil was also found to reduce no-tillage yields. Several factors were found to decrease the chance of downside risk with no-tillage, they were sorghum, sandy soil, Northern Crescent, Northern Great Plains, Prairie Gateway and Southern Seaboard regions. Two factors that increased the chance of lowered no-tillage yields were increased rainfall and length of use of no-tillage. Differences in mean net returns and downside risk were evaluated using a mixed model and logit model. Results showed that no-tillage was more profitable than conventional tillage in the Mississippi Portal region, but less profitable in the Prairie Gateway. Net returns were lower for no-tillage wheat and soybeans when produced in a clay soil. Cotton grown in sand had higher no-till net returns, but increased rainfall decreased cotton net returns. A logit model showed certain factors decreased the probability of lower no-tillage net returns. There was less downside risk with wheat grown under no-tillage as well as less downside risk in the Southern Seaboard region and when no-tillage was used on a clay soil. There were factors that increased the probability of lower no-tillage net returns; increased precipitation, Northern Great Plains, Prairie Gateway and Basin & Range regions.

Possible association of grain protein content, harvest index and biological yield in winter wheat populations

A negative relation between grain protein content and grain yield is frequently observed in wheat (Triticum aestivum L. em Thell) i.e. as grain yield increases, grain protein decreases. It has been suggested that the inverse relation between grain yield and protein is in part the result of developing high yielding semi-dwarf wheat cultivars with an increased harvest index. This investigation was undertaken to determine the nature of the possible association of grain yield and protein content as influenced by harvest index, biological yield, plant height and kernel weight in winter wheat populations grown in Oregon. Progenies derived from three crosses of winter wheat were solid-planted in two environments during two seasons. Phenotypic correlations showed a moderate negative association of grain protein content with both grain yield and harvest index. The magnitude of the genetic correlations suggested the presence of genetic relationships among these traits. Selection for harvest index among these crosses could cause a correlated reduction of grain protein content. To investigate if the relationships between grain protein content and selected plant growth traits were similar when grown under space-planted and solid seeded stands, progenies of two winter wheat crosses were evaluated during two seasons. Performance for grain yield and grain protein content was different under contrasting sowing densities as values were not correlated between sowing densities. This indicates the need to evaluate these traits in solid-seeded stands. Harvest index, as well as plant height and heading date, could be effectively selected under space-planted or solid seeded conditions. Associations among traits were reliably estimated in space-planted stands. To evaluate the effect on grain protein content when grain yield and harvest index are modified, the plant growth regulator Paclobutrazol was applied to selected winter wheat genotypes under field and greenhouse conditions. Paclobutrazol increased grain yield and harvest index values of all genotypes in the greenhouse, while only some genotypes improved these traits under field conditions. How do sovereign debt yields respond to credit rating announcements

The concept of asymmetric information is probably best described by medieval idiom to buy a pig in a poke or to buy a cat in a sack, and is a long standing issue in a market economy. A solution to this predicament, is thought to be an objective third party certifier who would provide true information for the market participants. Credit Rating Agencies (CRAs) by all definitions act as such certifiers within financial markets and have been on the public spotlight for the last years. In both cases, the US subprime mortgage crisis and the EU sovereign debt crisis, the agencies were charged for miss-information on quality of financial products, that led to financial losses for the investors or debtors. Theoretical deduction suggest that certain market reaction to CRA announcements may indicate  if markets perceive CRAs themselves as selling a cat in a sack to the investors. Event study approach is employed to investigate how do sovereign debt market react to CRA announcements. The results suggest that sovereign debt market reaction is more pronounced if three major CRAs issue clustered announcements, and more actively react to following announcements as opposed to the leading ones.

This study aimed to examine farmers’ descriptions of their experiences of cultivating Bt cotton and to see whether or not the farmers’ descriptions of their experiences are in coherence with the purposes with Bt cotton. This was carried out through qualitative semi-structured interviews with Bt cotton farmers in Vidarbha, Maharashtra, and a qualitative content analysis of the farmers’ descriptions. Our conclusions are among other, that the experiences of the farmers are various. Some farmers have experienced what Bt cotton was aimed to lead to; higher yields and reduced use of pesticides while other farmers have experienced the opposite.

Yield risk in wheat production: A policy study for the Alentejo of Portugal

This study attempts to determine whether or not Portuguese wheat policies have resulted in a stabilization of the wheat price and/or the stabilization of income for wheat growers in the Alentejo region. It was found that these policies have contributed to a stabilization of price rather than a stabilization of income. It was also found that the income variability caused by yield variability was greater for the Alentejo farmers than that for the country as a whole. Weather uncertainties measured by rainfall were found to be a major source of that variability in both area and yield equations. Therefore, it was concluded that rainfall is significant in explaining variations in wheat supply and cannot be eliminated from the model specification. Finally, this study looked at a policy that would stabilize output returns to Alentejo farmers since high yield variability will continue to constrain farmers' willingness to invest in wheat production. An insurance program may be the policy to implement in this region since yield risks are the predominant source of income variability. However, the cost of financing an agricultural insurance scheme as well as the delineation of homogeneous areas are crucial determinants to the success of an all-risk insurance program.
