Le sionisme chrétien contemporain aux États-Unis : entre religion et politique / Contemporary Christian Zionism in the United-States : between religion and politics

Batut-Lucas, Katia 03 July 2014 (has links)
This doctoral thesis deals with Christian Zionism, and more precisely with pastor John Hagee, the members of his organization (Christians United For Israel - CUFI) and his assembly, Cornerstone Church. This movement gathers fundamentalist Evangelicals who literally obey Genesis 12: 3, which says it is necessary to bless Israel to be blessed in return. They believe that the return of the Jews to the Holy Land, the creation of the State of Israel (1948) and the conquest of Jerusalem (1967) are forewarning signs of the Second coming of Jesus Christ confirming the prophecies from the New Testament and the Old Testament. CUFI has one message for the nation of America, and also for humanity. Their message must be communicated in defense of the State of Israel and the Jews. This explains how the Christian Zionist movement, which is not a recent one, aims for reaching its ultimate objective of national influence by constantly changing its techniques along with employing progressive strategies. The question deals with the relationship between religion and politics. The research follows the progression of Hagee and his groups from the religious sphere to political engagement, and the factors that are the origins of this passage. We will see how these Christians, who are influenced by a background that is political, millenarist and prophetic, become religious actors in the political arena. Moreover, we concentrated on pro-Israel Evangelical literature, in addition to making a field study along with observations and interviews. During the field trips, the individual, as a pro-Israel Evangelical, his own experience, and his relation to religion and Israel was our focus. Finally, this thesis provides an interdisciplinary perspective between religious studies and American studies.

Radical Christianity in the Holy Land : a comparative study of liberation and contextual theology in Palestine-Israel

Kuruvilla, Samuel Jacob January 2009 (has links)
Palestine is known as the birthplace of Christianity. However the Christian population of this land is relatively insignificant today, despite the continuing institutional legacy that the 19th century Western missionary focus on the region created. Palestinian Christians are often forced to employ politically astute as well as theologically radical means in their efforts to appear relevant within an increasingly Islamist-oriented society. My thesis focuses on two ecumenical Christian organisations within Palestine, the Sabeel Ecumenical Liberation Theology Centre in Jerusalem (headed by the Anglican cleric Naim Stifan Ateek) and Dar Annadwa Addawliyya (the International Centre of Bethlehem-ICB, directed by the Lutheran theologian Mitri Raheb). Based on my field work (consisting of an in-depth familiarisation with the two organisations in Palestine and interviews with their directors, office-staff and supporters worldwide, as well as data analyses based on an extensive literature review), I argue that the grassroots-oriented educational, humanitarian, cultural and contextual theological approach favoured by the ICB in Bethlehem is more relevant to the Palestinian situation, than the more sectarian and Western-oriented approach of the Sabeel Centre. These two groups are analysed primarily according to their theological-political approaches. One, (Sabeel), has sought to develop a critical Christian response to the Palestine-Israel conflict using the politico-theological tool of liberation theology, albeit with a strongly ecumenical Western-oriented focus, while the other (ICB), insists that its theological orientation draws primarily from the Levantine Christian (and in their particular case, the Palestinian Lutheran) context in which Christians in Israel-Palestine are placed. Raheb of the ICB has tried to develop a contextual theology that seeks to root the political and cultural development of the Palestinian people within their own Eastern Christian context and in light of their peculiarly restricted life under an Israeli occupation regime of over 40 years. In the process, I argue that the ICB has sought to be much more situationally relevant to the needs of the Palestinian people in the West Bank, given the employment, socio-cultural and humanitarian-health opportunities opened up by the practical-institution building efforts of this organisation in Bethlehem.

Cesta Československa od podpory sionismu k antisionismu (1947-1957) / Path of Czechoslovakia from Support of Zionism to Anti-Zionist Position (1947-1957)

Habermann, Tomáš January 2017 (has links)
The theme of this thesis is attitude of the Communist Party and Czechoslovak totalitarian regime to Zionism in 1947-1957. The main aim of the archive research was to map gradual change of the communist regime from its position of the supporter of Zionism to that one of convinced anti-Zionism (nearly to anti-Semitism). Support of Zionism was primarily presented by help to the nascent state of Israel in 1947-1949. The evidence is given by the role of Czechoslovakia at meetings of the United Nations General Assembly in 1947 and its role as a member of United Nations Special Committee on Palestine. Furthermore, supplies of military equipment to Israel, diplomatic support, demographic support and training of Jewish brigade in Czechoslovak territory in 1948. Gradual change to anti-Zionist position at the end of 1940s and beginning of 1950s is illustrated with complicated negotiations on economic cooperation and with interfering of the regime in running of Jewish religious communities and Zionist organisations. During the first half of 1950s the support turned into downright opposition and lead in a diplomatic quarrel caused by the Slánský trial which had definitely anti-Semitic and anti-Zionist dimension. Utterly anti-Zionist position of the regime is also supported with further politically motivated trials -...

Israeli military fiction: a narrative in transformation

Rubinstein, Keren Tova Unknown Date (has links) (PDF)
The current study investigates changing attitudes to militarism within Israeli society since the tumultuous decades following 1948. Events leading to the current state of Israeli society will be traced in order to illustrate the way in which change occurs. The shifts in Israeli history and society during these decades will be examined alongside developments in Israeli literature. Accordingly, eight works of fiction have been selected to lie at the heart of the study. These works, all of which centre around the Israeli military experience, convey an erosion of personal, national, and ideological certainties. The analysis of these works demands three areas of exploration: the depiction of the soldier in the civilian setting, the depiction of the soldier as he interacts with other soldiers in the military sphere, and ‘post-Zionist’ military fiction produced in recent decades. These three areas of exploration entail an interrogation of gender, nationalism, and ‘post-Zionism’ in contemporary Israel. The works examined in the third chapter contain commentary not only upon the social reality of their authors, but also upon the way in which Israeli literature engages with the issues that inform its existence. Le sionisme : une analyse morphologique

Côté, Jean-Sébastien 06 1900 (has links)
Zionism is a political movement, a national ideology. Its history is one of national liberation but also of tragedy, a tragedy faced by two peoples with equally legitimate aspirations to the same piece of territory. In order to help understand that tragedy as well as, one day, how it may perhaps be overcome, a morphological analysis of Zionism is undertaken. The morphological approach to the study of ideologies was first developed by Michael Freeden. Applied to Zionism, it reveals four core concepts of the ideology - nation, antisemitism, galout and national renaissance. Their analysis aims to account for the conceptual evolution of Zionism both diachronically and as regards its numerous ideational variations, thus providing an account of how it evolved through a changing sociopolitical context.

Buberův kulturní sionismus a Masarykův humanismus - komparativní studie / Buber's Curtural Zionism and Masaryk's Humanism - Comparative Study

Venclová, Marie January 2012 (has links)
99 Summary Buberův kulturní sionismus a Masarykův humanismus - komparativní studie Buber's Cultural Zionism and Masaryk's Humanism - Comparative Study Marie Venclová This thesis deals with various aspects of understanding the term nation, its roots and dimensions in the works of Martin Buber and Tomas Garrigue Masaryk. The comparative study is based on analysis of Buber's Three Addresses on Judaism and Masaryk's Problem of a Small Nation. In these texts the philosophers present their attitudes and ideas about the meaning, origin and content of the existence of a nation. The results of the comparison show, that their points of view are similar in more than a few aspects and what most importantly bonds their ideas is the moral, spiritual and cultural understanding of the meaning of a nation. Furthermore, they both stress the responsibility of each and every individual part of the society for implementing such ideas into practice. Buber's cultural Zionism as well as Masaryk's humanism are also concepts based on critical self-reflection and need of education, which serves to broaden horizons and identify positive values in one's own nation. Motivation for this thesis resided in unique legal position of the Jewish minority in Czechoslovakia after the First World War. Based on the results of the comparison we...

Franz Baermann Steiner - Précurseur du postcolonialisme / Franz Baermann Steiner – Precursor of Post-Colonialism

Parkhurst-Atger, Isabella 11 December 2010 (has links)
Franz Baermann Steiner [1909-1952], an exile from Prague, was a German poeta doctus who taught anthropology at the Oxford Institute after the Second World War. In his oeuvre, comprising more than 9500 aphorisms, over 300 poems and also anthropological writings, he sketches a critique of eurocentrism, colonial imperialism and epistemic violence, thus anticipating postcolonial theory. The first part of our thesis analyses how an assimilated Jew from Prague developed a discourse that takes up notions developed in the writings of Aimé Césaire and Edward Said. It therefore offers a complete analysis of his background in the Habsburg Empire from a post-colonial point of view, and an evaluation of the linguistic and social politics in Bohemia and Prague during the first Czech Republic. The study focuses, on the one hand, on the hybrid and liminal character of his milieu [i.e. German Jews in Prague] as well as the decisive discursive impact of cultural Zionism and, on the other hand, on his exile in England and the influence of British Social Anthropology. These are, from our point of view, the key elements of the post-colonial discourse emerging in Steiner’s writings. Taking his aphorisms as a starting point, our study then follows up the post-colonial thought in the entire oeuvre of the poet and anthropologist, underlining the various links between poetry, religion and science which are so characteristic of his original writings. The concept of liminality is present in all his writings on a methodological level [a liminal discursive positioning within the Western academic structures and an observant position in his poetry] and it also dominates the choice of themes [slavery, taboo, Shaman poet and exile]. Although Steiner never completely abandoned the essentialist vision of culture, the notion of hybridity is an essential factor of his identity, enriching his writings immensely [e.g. problem of cultural translatability, hybrid ethnopoetics and a new hybrid Robinson figure].
