This study focuses on how the Swedish political parties are described in various learning materials in junior high school and high school. The purpose of this study is to examine learning materials in the subject social studies. The study also focuses on describing the problems that may occur with a democracy point of view if the learning materials do not give relevant and extensive descriptions of the political parties. The method that has been used is a learning material analysis as well as a qualitative text analysis with perspectives from Robert Dahls theory of democracy, especially the criteria of enlightened understanding. The study concludes that in a democracy perspective, there is a problem with many of the learning materials because the descriptions of the political parties are in no way descriptive enough to give the students the possibility to reach enlightened understanding, especially since it is not easy to find objective descriptions about the parties outside of the parties’ own presentation of themselves.
