The aim of this essay is to study ”What is knowledge?” within the framework of religious education in upper secondary school. The study examines the curricula during the period 1994–2025. The analysis is based upon Michael Grimmitt´s theory of what knowledge is – either objectively existent, external to the knower or socially constructed, socially-related and socially relative. The result shows a development where the goal of religious education seems to be that the students should learn not only about religion but also from religion. The result also shows that the overall fostering mission (in Swedish: ‘fostransuppdraget’) of the Swedish school system still characterizes the content of religious education.
