Application for selection of Bluetooth or WLAN

Svenjeby, Jonatan, Jönsson, Richard January 2019 (has links)
Wireless communication is important in data transportation between devices. It is as ever important to find the best connection fitted for the users specific requirements. This process can be a hassle and having an application testing all the options could save both time and resources. This project involves solving mentioned problem and to create an application implementing the solution. A method of recommending a connection is to measure different metrics e.g throughput and packet loss for Bluetooth (BT) and each channel on 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wireless Area Network (WLAN). By using an appropriate algorithm to rate the connections a result ranging from best to worst can be displayed to the user. Limitations on metrics can be inputted by the user to tailor the result to match user requirements. The application is based on Hardware Meets Software (HMS) product Anybus Wireless Bridge II. With a Telnet connection Attention-commands (AT-commands) can be used to configure and utilize the modules e.g measure signal strength. Third-party services POCO and iPerf are used to measure other metrics e.g throughput and latency. C++ and Visual Studio was used to develop the application. In accordance to the test specification the projected resulted in a successfully working application. Tests prove that with interference on a channel results in a worse rating and that other channels that are unaffected gets a higher ranking on the list. There is still room for improvement regarding exception handling when connection timeouts happen due to loss of signal.

The Impact of iCoaching on Teacher-delivered Opportunities to Respond

Unknown Date (has links)
Employment coaching is essential for performing job duties and for developing and enhancing skills. Coaching in the school setting typically follows the traditional format of pre-conference, observe, and post-conference, where feedback on teaching performance is shared but often delayed. Professional development provides teachers with skills to enhance their teaching practice with little to no follow-up or support. The most effective way to produce change in the school setting is to show the connection between professional development and student performance, and iCoaching can help to bridge the gap. Research shows that effective feedback is immediate, systematic, positive, constructive, and detailed (Scheeler & Lee, 2002). Bug-in-ear (BIE) coaching is a way to provide immediate feedback so correction can be made live, and errors are reduced. iCoaching uses iPods as a BIE device with a coach serving as a remote observer providing coaching prompts or immediate feedback to the teacher to allow the teacher to implement ideas or make corrections immediately. Increasing opportunities to respond (“Increasing Opportunities to Respond,” 2015) is a way to increase academic achievement and on task behavior (Sutherland, Alder, & Gunter, 2003). This study utilized a multiple probe across participants design to investigate the effect of iCoaching on teacher-delivered OTR. Four teacher participants and their students participated in the study, where the teachers completed a teacher preparation session and live iCoaching sessions to increase their OTR. Data were collected on OTR (including the type of OTR), coaching comments, student responses, and student curricular performance. The results indicate that iCoaching was effective in increasing teacher-delivered OTR and increasing student responses and academic performance. Implications for future research are discussed. / Includes bibliography. / Dissertation (Ph.D.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2017. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Integration of Bluetooth-enabled sensors into E-health application for home healthcare and monitoring

García Pérez, Agustín January 2008 (has links)
ABSTRACTnformation and telecommunication technologies have been used for medical applications for almost a century: the radio, the phone and the television have been used to provide medical assistance to remote areas like boats located in the sea, oil rigs and other isolated locations. This new use of ICT was given the name of Telemedicine. ISince the 90`s, health care systems have been looking for new ways and alternatives to provide health care than the traditional hospital centers. Information technologies and communication systems have been developed, especially with the deployment of Internet access to most of residential areas, and have brought health care to the electronic age; Carving a new term E-Health.Nowadays Telemedicine is used in several E-health applications for teleconsultation, telediagnosis, telemonitoring and has been successfully tested in teleradiology, telecardiology, teledermatology, telepsychiatry, etc. This technology is used in rural areas, health areas, prisons, home cares, emergencies, wars, etc. This project implements two different parts. The first one is an user application to measure weight and blood pressure from the patient using two Bluetooth-enable measurement devices: the UC-321PBT Precision Health Scale and UA-767PBT Blood Pressure Monitor. The second one implements a web server to store all patients reports with updated information in real time. This information can be consulted through a web page for medical staff in HL7 patient’s report format. / Uppsatsnivå: D

INDOOR-WIRELESS LOCATION TECHNIQUES AND ALGORITHMS UTILIZING UHF RFID AND BLE TECHNOLOGIES

Whitney, Ann M. 01 January 2019 (has links)
The work presented herein explores the ability of Ultra High Frequency Radio Frequency (UHF RF) devices, specifically (Radio Frequency Identification) RFID passive tags and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to be used as tools to locate items of interest inside a building. Localization Systems based on these technologies are commercially available, but have failed to be widely adopted due to significant drawbacks in the accuracy and reliability of state of the art systems. It is the goal of this work to address that issue by identifying and potentially improving upon localization algorithms. The work presented here breaks the process of localization into distance estimations and trilateration algorithms to use those estimations to determine a 2D location. Distance estimations are the largest error source in trilateration. Several methods are proposed to improve speed and accuracy of measurements using additional information from frequency variations and phase angle information. Adding information from the characteristic signature of multipath signals allowed for a significant reduction in distance estimation error for both BLE and RFID which was quantified using neural network optimization techniques. The resulting error reduction algorithm was generalizable to completely new environments with very different multipath behavior and was a significant contribution of this work. Another significant contribution of this work is the experimental comparison of trilateration algorithms, which tested new and existing methods of trilateration for accuracy in a controlled environment using the same data sets. Several new or improved methods of triangulation are presented as well as traditional methods from the literature in the analysis. The Antenna Pattern Method represents a new way of compensating for the antenna radiation pattern and its potential impact on signal strength, which is also an important contribution of this effort. The performance of each algorithm for multiple types of inputs are compared and the resulting error matrix allows a potential system designer to select the best option given the particular system constraints.

A Novel and an Efficient Design of an Inverted F-Antenna for Bluetooth Low Energy Communications

Khatib, Amer January 2019 (has links)
Constantly, antenna plays an important role in expanding the wireless communication systems in different technology applications for example, but not limited to, IoT communications and automotive radar systems. On the other hand, the Bluetooth-Low-Energy (BLE) benefits different sorts of applications, as it offers (i) a very low power consumption, (ii) a very fast data transfer, (iii) and an inexpensive/efficient solution as well. This research is a part of AES-Nordic AB projects, which intends to improve the connection between remote vibration sensors and the measurement device. The vibration sensor sends the captured data to the receiver via a wired connection which, in turn, creates a lot of complications, in terms of access limitation and a connection loss vulnerability. The aim of this thesis is to remove these limitations and improve the overall performance using a wireless connection over BLE. This thesis project presents a novel and an efficient system that eliminates the wired-connections shortcomings by involving a new inverted F-antenna design which transfers data from remote sensors to the measurement device. The produced antenna needs to satisfy the following conditions: (i) resonant frequency of 2.44GHz, (ii) isotropic directivity, (iii) minimum coverage of 20-meters. The other goal of this thesis is to compare the presented antenna with commercially available solutions, such as helical and monopole antennas for the purpose of showing the efficiency of the presented solution. The produced antennas were tested in the anechoic chamber and the measurement results show that the designed inverted F-antenna has a comparatively better performance than its peers.

Evaluation of Wireless Techniques for Short-Range Communication / Utvärdering av trådlösa tekniker för kommunikation över korta avstånd

Söderkvist, Jonas January 2003 (has links)

On radar level gauges currently shipped by Saab Rosemount, some adjustments of the unit's parameters has to be performed in the field. Presently, this is a cumbersome procedure; the operator has to be very close to the gauge and he either has to carry with him a bulky configuration unit or use a basic control unit on the gauge. A wireless solution, where a portable device and a receiver replace the control unit, would both allow the operator to work from a distance and eliminate the need for the bulky device.

The most conspicuous restraint for such a solution is a very low allowed power dissipation. The reason for this is that some gauges do not have a separate power supply, but are fed directly off the communication bus. A viable solution should also be commercially available and robust enough to operate in an industrial environment.

To meet these requirements both a theoretical and a practical assessment was conducted, where the two techniques for wireless communication, IrDA, and Bluetooth, was given special consideration. As for the portable device, the market for hand-held computers was investigated and ultimately a PDA from Palm was selected for this project. Together with this PDA, a prototype for each of the two wireless techniques was tested to ascertain their performance with respect to power dissipation, communication range, and communication robustness.

This investigation revealed that Bluetooth could be used over a much greater distance than IrDA and it did also provide a more robust solution overall. IrDA is nonetheless also a competent technique, and has its primary advantage in terms of much lower power dissipation compared to Bluetooth.

Undersökning och utformning av ett generellt datainsamlingssystem i LabVIEW / Designing a general program for data-aquisition with LabVIEW

Ek, Fredrik January 2005 (has links)

This report is the result of a diploma work made at IMT at US in Linköping. The purpose of this piece of work is to investigate the possibility to design a general program for data-acquisition using LabVIEW, suiting different hardwares and connections. Great importance has been attached to communication with serialport, using bluetooth, because different wireless PPG-instruments has been developed parallel to this project. These PPG-circuits uses this type of serialcommunication. Communication with USB, GPIB and analog connection has also been examined and analog communication has been tested practically. But any serious implementation of these types in the LabVIEW-program has not been made. The paper starts with theory where LabVIEW, bluetooth, PPG, different connections and the different PPG-sensors is described concisely. Theory is followed by a"performance-part"where the course of action and the LabVIEW- program is described. The result of the work is an application in LabVIEW for communication with different PPG-sensors, where interface, protocol and file-standard/format has been designed. The program is adapted to prolonged measurements with full duplex. Measurements can be saved into ascii- or binary format, and signals can be studied carefully in graphs.Since only one PPG-sensor is fully made, a test in measurement and acquisition has been made with that sensor only. Ragarding the other PPG-instruments, the communication has been tested in hyperterminal.
