ESTUDO DAS COMPONENTES DO BALANÇO DE ENERGIA EM UMA CULTURA DE ARROZ IRRIGADO NO SUL DO BRASIL / STUDY OF THE ENERGY BALANCE COMPONENTS IN AN IRRIGATED RICE CULTURE IN SOUTHERN BRAZILSena, Julio Cesar Lopes 31 August 2012 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This dissertation presents a study on the experimental site of Cachoeira do Sul-RS,
Brazil. The objective of this study was to estimate the components of the Energy Balance
Closure on the surface of a rice paddy field. The research was divided into three periods: I-dry
soil, not irrigated and low vegetation, remaining from the last rice harvest, II - irrigated soil in
which the area was being prepared for planting pre-germinated rice, and period III - irrigated
soil already planted with rice and at reproductive phase. Also, we performed measurements of
leaf area index, rice height and monitoring of the water level on the field. Temperature
measurements at the water level on the crop were used to estimate the energy flow through
this order to improve the EBC. For data acquisition, were used temperature sensors in the soil,
heat flux plate, net radiation sensor, wind speed and direction and infrared open path gas
analyzer. The results showed that the sum of the components Energy Balance Closure are not
equivalent to the available energy in the surface, and the surface energy imbalance is
influenced by the surface coverage.
Cachoeira do Sul-RS, Brasil.

The use of FLUENT for heat flow studies of the hot-wire chemical vapor deposition system to determine the temperatures reached at the growing layer surfaceZhou, En January 2009 (has links)
Magister Scientiae - MSc / The overall aim of this project is to study the heat transfer inside the reaction chamber of the Hot-Wire Chemical Vapor Deposition (HWCVD) system with a commercial software package FLUENT6.3; it is one of the most popular Computational Fluid Dynamics solvers for complex flows ranging from incompressible to mildly compressible to even highly compressible flows. The wealth of physical models in FLUENT allows us to accurately predict laminar and turbulent flows, various modes of heat transfer, chemical reactions, multiphase flows and other phenomena with complete mesh flexibility and solution-based mesh adaptation. In this study the 3-D HWCVD geometry was measured and created in GAMBIT which then generates a mesh model of the reaction chamber for the calculation in FLUENT. The gas flow in this study was characterized as the steady and incompressible fluid flow due to the small Mach number and assumptions made to simplify the complexity of the physical geometry. This thesis illustrates the setups and solutions of the 3-D geometry and the chemically reacting laminar and turbulent gas flow, wall surface reaction and heat transfer in the HWCVD deposition chamber. / South Africa

Beräkning och sammanställning av linjära köldbryggor : En jämförelse mellan HEAT2 och COMSOL Multiphysics / Calculation and compilation of thermal bridges : A comparison between HEAT2 and COMSOL MultiphysicsKarlsson, Fredrik, Mani, Samuel January 2015 (has links)
Currently there is a lot of focus on environmentally friendly and energy efficient buildings in our society. To face the more toughen energy requirements, the entire climate shell of the building has to be considered there thermal bridges constitute a significant part. This bachelor dissertation intends to create a compilation for Ψ-values of common construction details where thermal bridges are to be found. The compilation with a chart that includes insulating material and insulation thickness shall simplify in future projecting. Furthermore, two simulating programs for calculations of thermal bridges have been compared with each other. The two simulation programs that have been used in this dissertation are HEAT2 and COMSOL Multiphysics. This dissertation has resulted in a quick reference guide which is available at ELU`s internal network. This quick reference guide includes U-values and Ψ-values with an illustration of every construction detail and the procedure and execution is reported in this dissertation. An evaluation of which of the two programs that has been used was more appropriate for this purpose is presented as well.

Water dynamics in the rhizosphere / How mucilage affects water flow in soilsKröner, Eva 10 February 2016 (has links)

The mechanics of valve cooling in internal-combustion engines : investigation into the effect of VSI on the heat flow from valves towards the cooling jacketAbdel-Fattah, Yahia January 2009 (has links)
Controlling the temperature of the exhaust valves is paramount for proper functioning of engines and for the long lifespan of valve train components. The majority of the heat outflow from the valve takes place along the valve-seat-cylinder head-coolant thermal path which is significantly influenced by the thermal contact resistance (TCR) present at the valve/seat and seat/head interfaces. A test rig facility and experimental procedure were successfully developed to assess the effect of the valve/seat and seat/head interfaces on heat outflow from the valve, in particular the effects of the valve/seat interface geometry, seat insert assembly method, i.e. press or shrink fit, and seat insert metallic coating on the operating temperature of the valve. The results of tests have shown that the degree of the valve-seat geometric conformity is more significant than the thermal conductivity of the insert: for low conforming assemblies, the mean valve head temperature recorded during tests on copper-infiltrated insert seats was higher than that recorded during tests on noninfiltrated seats of higher conformance. The effect of the insert-cylinder head assembly method, i.e. shrink-fitted versus press-fitted inserts, has proved negligible: results have shown insignificant valve head temperature variations, for both tin-coated and uncoated inserts. On the other hand, coating the seat inserts with a layer of tin (20-22μm) reduced the mean valve head temperature by approximately 15°C as measured during tests on uncoated seats. The analysis of the valve/seat and seat/head interfaces has indicated that the surface asperities of the softer metal in contact would undergo plastic deformation. Suitable thermal contact conductance (TCC) models, available in the public domain, were used to evaluate the conductance for the valve/seat and seat/cylinder head interfaces. Finally, a FE thermal model of the test rig has been developed with a view to assess the quality of the calculated TCC values for the valve/seat and seat/head interfaces. The results of the thermal analysis have shown that predicted temperatures at chosen control points agree with those measured during tests on thermometric seats with an acceptable level of accuracy, proving the effectiveness of the used TCC models.

Application of Computational Thermodynamic and Solidification Kinetics to Cold Sprayable Powder Alloy DesignBelsito, Danielle L 14 January 2014 (has links)
Military aircraft that require high maneuverability, durability, ballistic protection, reparability, and energy efficiency require structural alloys with low density, high toughness, and high strength. Also, repairs to these aircraft demand a production process that has the flexibility to be relatively in-situ with the same high-performance output. Materials produced by the cold spray process, a thermo-mechanical powder consolidation technique, meet many of the requirements. In accordance with President Obama’s 2011 Materials Genome Initiative, the focus of this effort is to design customized aluminum alloy powders which exploit the unique behavior and properties of the materials created by the cold spray process. Analytical and computational models are used to customize microchemistry, thermal conditioning, and solidification behavior of the powders by predicting equilibrium and non-equilibrium microstructure and resulting materials properties and performance. Thermodynamic, kinetic, and solidification models are used, including commercial software packages Thermo-Calc, Pandat™, and JMatPro®, and TC-PRISMA. Predicted powder properties can be used as input into a cold spray process impact model to determine the consolidated materials’ properties. Mechanical properties of powder particles are predicted as a function of powder particle diameter and are compared to experimental results.

Imaging of fractured rock properties from flow and heat transport : field experiments and inverse modelling / Inversion des données de flux et de température en milieu hétérogèneKlepikova, Maria 16 May 2013 (has links)
The accurate characterization of distribution of hydraulic properties and connectivity distribution is essential to predict flow and transport in fractured media. Classical approaches were developed for homogeneous aquifers and result in smooth tomograms that often do not match true heterogeneity distribution of fractured media. The main goal of this thesis is to develop new inverse approaches specifically for imaging hydraulic and transport properties in fractured media at the field-scale. To attain this objective new in situ measurement methods as well as new inverse modelling frameworks are proposed. We first propose flow tomography (i.e., sequential cross-borehole flowmeter tests) as a new approach for characterizing fracture connectivity and transmissivities. Based on a discrete fracture network approach, we present a general method to invert flow tomography data. From synthetic case studies, we show that the tomographic approach reduces significantly the uncertainty on the parameter estimation. Flow tomography approach provides detailed characterization on fracture networks without the necessity of using packers. We then study the contribution of temperature measurements for quantifying flow in fractured media. The advantage of using temperature data is that temperature profiles can be obtained more easily and continuously in space, compared to flowmeter profiles. Using a numerical model of flow and heat transfer at the borehole scale, a method to invert temperature measurements to derive borehole flow velocities was proposed. We then couple the two previously proposed approaches in a new experimental approach which we call temperature tomography. This experiment consists of sequential borehole temperature logging under cross-borehole flow conditions. The full inverse framework is then presented to interpret temperature tomography experiments. Application of the temperature tomography approach to Stang er Brune field site showed encouraging results for the identification of general connectivity patterns and transmissivities of the main flowpaths. Finally, we explore the interest of using push-pull thermal tracer tests. Through field experiments and numerical modelling, we demonstrate that conducting push-pull heat tracer tests provide important constraints on the effective transport behavior.

The evolution equations for Dirac-harmonic MapsBranding, Volker January 2012 (has links)
This thesis investigates the gradient flow of Dirac-harmonic maps. Dirac-harmonic maps are critical points of an energy functional that is motivated from supersymmetric field theories. The critical points of this energy functional couple the equation for harmonic maps with spinor fields. At present, many analytical properties of Dirac-harmonic maps are known, but a general existence result is still missing.
In this thesis the existence question is studied using the evolution equations for a regularized version of Dirac-harmonic maps. Since the energy functional for Dirac-harmonic maps is unbounded from below the method of the gradient flow cannot be applied directly. Thus, we first of all consider a regularization prescription for Dirac-harmonic maps and then study the gradient flow.
Chapter 1 gives some background material on harmonic maps/harmonic spinors and summarizes the current known results about Dirac-harmonic maps. Chapter 2 introduces the notion of Dirac-harmonic maps in detail and presents a regularization prescription for Dirac-harmonic maps. In Chapter 3 the evolution equations for regularized Dirac-harmonic maps are introduced. In addition, the evolution of certain energies is discussed. Moreover, the existence of a short-time solution to the evolution equations is established.
Chapter 4 analyzes the evolution equations in the case that the domain manifold is a closed curve. Here, the existence of a smooth long-time solution is proven. Moreover, for the regularization being large enough, it is shown that the evolution equations converge to a regularized Dirac-harmonic map. Finally, it is discussed in which sense the regularization can be removed.
In Chapter 5 the evolution equations are studied when the domain manifold is a closed Riemmannian spin surface. For the regularization being large enough, the existence of a global weak solution, which is smooth away from finitely many singularities is proven. It is shown that the evolution equations converge weakly to a regularized Dirac-harmonic map. In addition, it is discussed if the regularization can be removed in this case.

Mound and vent structures associated with gas hydrates offshore Vancouver Island: analysis of single-channel and deep-towed multichannel seismic dataHe, Tao 22 August 2007 (has links)
The study focuses mainly on two gas hydrate-related targets, located on the Northern Cascadia Margin, offshore Vancouver Island: (1) a recently identified 70-80-m high carbonate mound, Cucumber Ridge, located ~3.5-km west of Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 889 and Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Site U1327, and (2) a large cold vent, Bullseye vent, which is up to ~500 m in diameter and was drilled by IODP at Site U1328. The objective of this thesis is to analyze seismic data that provide indicators of locally focused fluid flow and characteristics of the gas hydrate occurrence associated with these two features. A grid of closely-spaced single channel seismic (SCS) data was collected at Cucumber Ridge in July/August 2001, and deep-towed multichannel seismic (MCS) lines were collected using Deep-towed Acoustics and Geophysics System (DTAGS) at the Bullseye vent area and at Cucumber Ridge in October 2002.
The high-resolution SCS data, with a frequency bandpass of 40-150 Hz, recorded coherent reflectivity down to about 400 m beneath the seafloor, and provide excellent images of the subseafloor structure of Cucumber Ridge and of the gas hydrate bottom-simulating reflector (BSR) beneath it. Cucumber Ridge is interpreted to have developed as a structural topographic high in the hanging wall of a large reverse fault formed at the base of the current seaward slope. The fault zone provides pathways for fluids including gas to migrate to the seafloor where diagenetic carbonate forms and cements the near-surface sediments. Over the seismic grid, heat flow was derived from the depth of the BSR. A simple 2-D analytical correction for theoretical heat flow variations due to topography is applied to the data. Across the mound, most of the variability in heat flow is explained by topographic effects, including a local 6 mW/m2 negative anomaly over the central mound and a large 20 mW/m2 positive anomaly over the mound steep side slope. However, just south of the mound, there is a 6-7 mW/m2 positive anomaly in a 2-km-long band that has predominantly flat seafloor. Most of this anomaly is probably unrelated to topographic effects, but rather likely due to warm upward fluid flow along faults or fracture zones.
Towed ~300 m above seafloor, the high frequency (220-1k Hz) DTAGS signal can provide high vertical resolution images with increased lateral resolution. The major problems of DTAGS are significant nonlinear variations of the source depths and receivers locations. New routines were developed for optimal DTAGS data processing, mainly including (1) cable geometry estimation by node depths, direct arrivals and seasurface reflections using a Genetic Algorithm inversion method, (2) acoustic image stitching based on accurate relative-source positioning by crosscorrelation of redundant data between two adjacent shots, and (3) velocity inversion of wide-angle traveltimes using a nonlinear global grid search method.
The final processed DTAGS images resolve multiple seismic blanking zones and fine details of subseafloor features in the slope sediments. At Bullseye vent, where a 35-m-thick near-surface massive hydrate layer was drilled at U1328, the DTAGS data resolved the upper part of layer as a dipping diffraction zone, likely corresponding to a fracture zone. The inverted velocity structure in upper 100 m sediments successfully revealed a 17-m-thick layer of high velocity (~1650 m/s) just below seafloor, probably related to carbonate presence. A local high velocity zone, with a positive velocity anomaly of ~40-80 m/s in the upper 50 m beneath seafloor, was observed over the ~100-m wide region between U1328 and the deepest part of a seafloor depression; the high velocity zone is consistent with the dipping diffraction zone in the DTAGS image and with the massive hydrate drilled at U1328.
