31	Às margens: um estudo ao redor de Os Sertões, Native Son e Cidade de Deus / On the margins: a study on Os Sertões, Native Son and Cidade de Deus Carolina Correia dos Santos 06 September 2013 (has links) Este trabalho se dedica a Os Sertões (1902), de Euclides da Cunha, Native Son (1940), de Richard Wright, e Cidade de Deus (1997), de Paulo Lins. Buscando construir-se uma leitura crítica criativa, esta tese utiliza o método comparativo de forma a possibilitar que novos aspectos das obras surjam, assim como os elementos hegemônicos e contra-hegemônicos que as constituem, e as suas fortunas críticas. Partindo do entendimento de que os textos críticos e literários sempre se situam num campo maior, político, o presente estudo visa compreender as relações estabelecidas entre as obras, a crítica, a nação e o Estado. Com esse objetivo, além dos textos de Euclides, Wright e Lins, e de algum das respectivas críticas, outras disciplinas e seus teóricos serão mobilizados; entre eles (mas não só): Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, Ranajit Guha, Gilles Deleuze, Felix Guattari e Jacques Derrida. / This dissertation looks at the work of Euclides da Cunha\'s Os Sertões (1902), Richard Wright\'s Native Son (1940) and Paulo Lins\'s Cidade de Deus (1997). It seeks to be a creative reading of the books and their critical fortune by way of a comparative approach, ultimately allowing new aspects, such as hegemonic and counter-hegemonic elements, to come to the fore. The basis of this study is that literary and critical texts are all inserted in a greater political field. This research draws upon neighboring disciplines and theorists such as: Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, Ranajit Guha, Gilles Deleuze, Felix Guattari and Jacques Derrida. The study investigates social relationships as figured and described in the epistolary form, based on letters between the author herself and different members of her family. It also tries to identify the author's position and situation in her time and society according to important themes and motifs in her novels. The main purpose is not to reconstruct history, but rather to show the many complex histories that can also be described, apart from the simplified and generalized one. 33	Crafting positions : representations of intimacy and gender in The Sentients of Orion Boshoff, Dorothea 03 1900 (has links) This study comprises a close reading and textual analysis of The Sentients of Orion, a space opera series by Australian author Marianne de Pierres, with a view to investigating the representations of gender in modern, popular science fiction by women authors. I hypothesise that de Pierres will pose a fictional enquiry into gender, based on the richness of science fiction by women, but that a closer examination of physical and emotional intimacy (both positive and negative) in these ‘less literary works’ will prove de Pierres’ gender enquiry to be superficial and inconsistent in nature. My main approach is a qualitative exploration of selected incidents through the theoretical lenses of feminist literary criticism, gender theory and, where applicable, queer theory. While I draw eclectically on these interpretive paradigms, my approach is most closely aligned with poststructuralist feminism. Proving the first part of my hypothesis, my findings show that de Pierres does pose an enquiry into gender through her portrayal of plot and character. The particular focus on the intimacies involving the heroine, women, men, and alien characters, proves the second part of my hypothesis incorrect as it reveals how de Pierres not only deeply and consistently challenges the heteronormative status quo, questioning dynamics in relationships, gender roles, ageism, sexism and societal stereotypes, but also provides possible alternatives. / English Studies / D.
