Repeated teenage pregnancies – The meanings ascribed by teenagers – A comparison between London and two Caribbean islands

This qualitative research seeks to improve our understanding of the relatively under-researched phenomenon of repeat teenage pregnancies, by exploring the underlying factors and meanings that teenagers ascribe to their pregnancies. The study uses a comparative approach to provide a comprehensive psychosocial and economic understanding of the factors leading to repeat teenage pregnancies. This is achieved by exploring both the diverse and similar experiences of two groups of teenagers within different socio-economic environments - one group of 26 respondents from the Caribbean islands of Jamaica and Barbados and the other group of 26 respondents from London. The research also capitalises on a unique opportunity to contextualize the welfare dependency/teenage pregnancy discourse. The behaviours, motivations, values and attitudes of young women who become repeatedly pregnant in a Welfare state such as England, are compared with those living in countries with limited state resources and few state benefits. The comparison shows that in the latter case, the lack of state intervention can have the disempowering impact of fostering dependency in many insidious forms. The findings demonstrate the very powerful influence that both intentional and hidden or masked factors can have on a young woman's decision to repeat a pregnancy. The intrinsic relationship between the personal driving forces of the young women and their repeated pregnancies is convincingly highlighted. These driving forces are accompanied by very strong and deep-rooted beliefs in the importance of motherhood and fertility, as well as anti-abortion views. When these factors are added to economic stringency, they provide the fuel for a young woman's journey into repeat pregnancies. The findings therefore caution against a reliance on a mechanistic understanding of both single and repeat teenage pregnancies and emphasise the fact that social, psychological, and emotional processes, as well as the economic influences, are also crucial to our understanding of repeat teenage pregnancies.

The role of the socio-economic environment on medical outcomes after ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction

Background: According to the World Health Organization, coronary artery disease (CAD), including ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), is the most common cause of death worldwide as well as in Europe and Austria. There is valid data on the impact of conventional risk factors on the medical outcomes for STEMI patients. However, only few studies examine the role of the socio-economic environment for medical outcomes. The main task of this study is to investigate if the socio-economic environment of patients who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) after STEMI has an impact on the distribution of risk factors and medical outcomes. Methods: The study focuses on the population of the City of Vienna, Austria, and includes 870 STEMI patients, who underwent PCI at the General Hospital of Vienna (AKH Wien) between 2008 and 2012. The following data were collected: conventional risk factors (hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, overweight, smoking, family history and vascular disease) and socio-economic indicators of the patient's residential district (number of residents, income pre-tax, residents per general practitioner, residents per internal specialist, compulsory education only, academic degree and rate of unemployment). Cox regressions were performed to evaluate the impact of socio-economic environment and conventional risk factors on survival. Results: Most of the conventional risk factors show a significant difference between deceased and surviving patients. The study revealed significant differences across districts in relation to the socio-economic background of STEMI patients. Surprisingly, medical outcomes, as measured by the survival of patients, are significantly related to a patient's district of residence ( p -Value = 0.028) but not in a systematic way as far as the socio-economic environment of These districts is concerned. Conclusions: The study provides intuitive evidence for a hitherto understudied Central European context on the link between socio-economic environment and conventional risk factors at population level and the link between conventional risk factors and survival both at the population at the individual level. While this is in line with previous evidence and suggestive of the incorporation of measures of socio-economic status (SES) into policy & guidelines toward the management of CAD, more data on the SES - STEMI nexus are needed at individual level.

This is the first book on the transformations wrought by Cambodia's 2002-08 economic boom. It explores the impact of the boom on governance, economic structure, and opportunities for the poor. It provides new insights into the relationship between economic growth and political stability in post-conflict societies. It is a cross-disciplinary study involving Cambodian and foreign scholars. From 2002, Cambodia underwent a visible economic transformation driven largely by such external factors as increased Chinese demand for primary commodities and a strong international demand for Cambodian garments. Apart from dramatic rates of economic growth, the boom involved the disappearance of forests and the decline of logging, the inflow of Chinese investment and the rise of indigenous capital, and the increased significance of remittances from garment workers and labour migrants. In addition, the impact of government policies on land registration and concessions transformed relations of production and, with them, the socio-economic and political environment in rural and urban Cambodia. "Cambodia's Economic Transformation" examines the political economy of the Cambodian boom, analysing the changing structure of the economy, the relationship between state and market, and outcomes for the poor. Not least, it focuses the role of the state in facilitating and controlling the market, and the way that this has affected the life chances of the poor. In so doing, it situates Cambodian experience within key debates in the wider political economy of Eastern Asia, scrutinizing the relationship between class formation, structures of governance and resource distribution.

Facilitating awareness in children from a low socio-economic environment using the art-making process / J.M. Rousseau.

Gestalt theory and Positive Psychology formed the underlying theoretical frameworks of this study. Both Gestalt theory and Positive Psychology adopt a positive outlook towards human nature with the possibility of individuals becoming self-supporting and fully functioning. Both theories also regard awareness to be paramount in establishing healthy self-regulation and optimal well-being. Both Gestalt theory and Positive Psychology provided the link between the concepts, and were also used to describe the main concepts in the study. A review of the literature shows that children living in underprivileged communities often face many environmental stressors that can impact on their well-being and optimal psychological, cognitive, emotional and physical functioning. When this occurs, children are often not able to meet very important needs. They may have to find alternative ways to „survive‟ and protect themselves from certain stressors and cope with their environment. Very often these coping strategies are dysfunctional and certain parts within the child can become cut off or pushed aside, severing healthy contact with the environment. The child may also experience a sense of numbing and lack of awareness of senses, emotions and thoughts. The child is therefore living out of awareness. The literature suggests that the process of artmaking can contribute to facilitating awareness, which can enhance selfunderstanding and possibly lead to a greater sense of well-being. The researcher attempted to explore the kinds of awareness that could be facilitated through the artmaking process. A qualitative research design with a phenomenological strategy of enquiry was used for this study. Seven children in middle childhood living in a low socio-economic community took part in the study. They were between the ages of eleven and twelve years and had suffered some form of environmental stress. They had been subjected to substance and alcohol abuse, violence, death and divorce. Focus groups and semi-structured interviews were used in order to understand what awareness may have been facilitated in children during the art-making process. The data collected were analysed thematically. The results revealed that the art-making process enabled the participants to experience certain kinds of awareness. The participants became aware of certain emotions and feelings like happiness, enjoyment, calmness, pride and mastery, as well as feelings of anger, sadness and denial. The participants were able to recognise and express positive emotions, but it appeared that the more complex emotions were recognised although not expressed. The most common emotion experienced by the participants was the sense of happiness and enjoyment they seemed to feel as they worked with the different art materials. It appeared that the playful nature of the art-making process kept them engaged and in contact with the process. The participants also became aware of a range of tactile experiences that each art medium offered; clay, paint, collage, hand printing and texture rubbings. These tactile experiences led them to an awareness of feelings and associations. The findings also indicated that the participants became aware of a sense of agency, as they appeared to have a sense of control and empowerment over the art mediums. This element of control over the art mediums seemed to afford the participants the ability to change what they did not like in their art work. This ability to change things appeared to feed back to, and enhance, their sense of empowerment. Through the findings of the study, as well as from the literature, this quality of empowerment, control and change is important for children in need living in a stressful environment, as it may foster a sense of agency that they may not find from their environment. Another significant finding seemed to be the participants‟ awareness of their context in terms of an unavailability of certain environmental resources to fulfil their needs, namely financial resources and nurturing. The Ecological Basis of Political Change Urbanization, Industrialization and Party Competition in the American South

This investigation is concerned with testing a causal model linking changes in a political system's socio-economic environment with alterations in political characteristics. The specific forces of interest are those relating to urbanization and industrialization, the development of that way of life called urbanism, and the effects of these environmental changes on voter participation and, ultimately, inter-party competition. The test model hypothesizes that the processes of urbanization and industrialization together create urbanism, which then affects party competition both indirectly by means of stimulating participation, and directly as well. To illuminate these processes, this study focuses on the American South of the last 30 years because it is in this region that the kinds of changes implicit in the test model have been observed, and thus the region offers the best arena for examining that model.

Sammanfattning   2016 utnämnde den svenska regeringen en nationell samordnare för att lägga upp en strategi mot våldsbejakande extremism (Regeringskansliet, 2016). Då studien syftar att studera om begreppet terrorism är rasifierat och huruvida terrorism beskrivs med hänsyn till fördomar om människors bakgrund eller ursprung - gör författare en analys kring hur Regering framställt och framställer Våldsbejakande Extremismen. Undersökningen tar sin teoretiska utgångspunkt i Robert Miles (1989) rasifieringsteori, och studien använder en kvalitativ innehållsanalys som metodval. Genom att undersöka offentliga dokument som regeringen publicerat i arbetet mot våldsbejakande extremism konkluderar analys att rasifiering förekommer i användningen av ”terrorism” till följd av att Våldsbejakande islamistisk extremism sammankopplas kulturella- och religiösa föreställningar som inte delar samma värdegrund som Västvärlden.Studiens slutsats är att analysens resultat, som understöds av tidigare forskning, påvisar att den politiska kontexten tar ställning i de olika typerna av våldsbejakande extremism. / Abstract   In 2016, the Swedish Government appointed a national coordinator to set up a strategy against violence-making extremism (Regeringskansliet, 2016). When the study aims at studying whether the concept of terrorism is racially and whether terrorism is described with regard to prejudices about people's background or origin, the author makes an analysis of how Government produces and produces violence-violent extremism. The study takes its theoretical basis in Robert Miles (1989) Theory of Reason, and the study uses a qualitative content analysis as method selection. By examining public documents published by the government in the work on violence-violent extremism, analysis concludes that racism occurs in the use of "terrorism" as a result of violence-violent Islamic extremism interconnecting cultural and religious beliefs that do not share the same value base as the Western world. The study's conclusion is that the results of the analysis, supported by previous research, show that the political context takes a position in the various types of violence-fighting extremism.

The aim of this multidisciplinary-oriented dissertation is to explicate the value and importance (the role) of human knowledge in context of informatization of socio-economic environment. The effort to bring interpretation in context is supported by theoretical and methodological background, which were formulated/defined based on number of relevant domestic and foreign resources. The analysis was performed using both quantitative and qualitative research methods and provides results applied to three areas within the document - economic system, education and information management. The issue of education is proving to be essential. Although we should react to the conditions changed due to an ongoing process of informatization, individual knowledge is being instrumentalized and fragmented. The conclusion shows that informatization may contribute to the fragmentation of knowledge and to reduce its value.

The development of accounting in Palestine during the first millennium : 1000-332 BC

The chief aims of this study are to determine what, if any, accounting processes were employed during the first millennium BC (1000-332 BC) in Palestine, to determine whether these were the result of the socio-economic requirements of the various centralised polities operative in Palestine during this period, how these processes developed over the course of the first millennium and whether they conform to the definition of accounting provided in Chapter One. I have adopted an archaeological, epigraphic and qualitative approach taking into consideration the historical and socio-economic backgrounds of the different political administrations in control during the period under discussion. The evidence demonstrates that the adopted processes can be regarded as accounting processes since they conform to at least three of the four components of the definition of accounting and that these processes developed over the course of time depending on the particular requirements of the ruling authority. / Biblical and Ancient Studies / M.A. (Biblical Archaeology)

Engagement affectif, comportemental et cognitif des élèves du primaire dans un contexte pédagogique d’intégration des TIC : une étude multicas en milieux défavorisés

Réalisée en milieux défavorisés, cette étude porte sur l’engagement scolaire des élèves de troisième cycle du primaire (5e et 6e années au Québec) dans un contexte d’utilisation pédagogique des technologies de l’information et de la communication (TIC). L’objectif de cette recherche est d’analyser l’engagement d’élèves utilisant les TIC. Elle vise à décrire les pratiques pédagogiques d’intégration des TIC de dix enseignants, de relater la qualité de l’engagement de leurs 230 élèves lors de tâches TIC et de mesurer l’évolution et la qualité de leur engagement scolaire selon le degré de défavorisation de leur école. Pour ce faire, cette recherche s’est inspirée d’un cadre de référence traitant l’engagement scolaire selon les dimensions affective, comportementale et cognitive. De plus, cette étude multicas essentiellement de nature interprétative et descriptive a utilisé une méthodologie mixte de collecte et d’analyse des données. Les résultats montrent notamment que les enseignants accordent une valeur pédagogique importante aux TIC tant dans la fréquence de leur utilisation, dans les usages valorisés que dans la façon de les intégrer en classe. Les enseignants privilégient largement le traitement de texte et la recherche sur Internet, mais très peu d’autres usages pertinents sont mis de l’avant de manière soutenue. La majorité des enseignants interrogés préférerait se servir de quatre ordinateurs en classe pour utiliser les TIC plus facilement que d’avoir uniquement accès au laboratoire de leur école. De plus, ils perçoivent de manière unanime que l’utilisation des TIC exerce une influence importante sur la dimension affective de leurs élèves lors d’activités préparées, assez bonne sur la dimension comportementale et plus discutable sur la dimension cognitive. Plus globalement, les élèves eux-mêmes affichent en général un engagement scolaire relativement élevé. En six mois, la qualité de l’engagement affectif des élèves est restée stable, leur engagement comportemental a progressé, mais leur engagement cognitif a baissé légèrement. Les résultats montrent aussi que la qualité de l’engagement des élèves de milieux défavorisés évolue différemment selon le degré de défavorisation de leur école. Dans cette recherche, l’importance de l’utilisation des TIC sur la qualité de l’engagement est marquante et s’avère parfois meilleure que dans d’autres types de tâches. Sans pouvoir généraliser, cette étude permet aussi de saisir davantage la qualité et l’évolution de l’engagement scolaire des élèves de la fin du primaire en milieux défavorisés. Des recommandations pour le milieu et des pistes de recherches futures sont présentées en tenant compte des limites et des forces de cette thèse inédite réalisée par articles. / Conducted in low socio-economic environments, this study looks at student engagement among third cycle elementary pupils (5th and 6th grade in Québec) in the context of the pedagogical use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) at school. The goal of this multiple case study was to analyze the engagement of those students using ICTs at school. Thereby we have attempted to describe ten teachers’ pedagogical ICT integration practices, to report the quality of engagement of their 230 students during ICT tasks, and to measure the evolution and quality of their engagement in accordance with the school’s socio-economic status. A cross-cultural exploratory validation of a psychometric questionnaire was therefore carried out. This essentially interpretive and descriptive research employed a mixed methodology of data collection and analysis. This research notes that the concerned teachers granted an important pedagogical value to the use of ICTs varying in the frequency of their use, those uses most valued, and in the manner in which they are integrated in class. They largely privilege word processing and Internet research, yet few other significant uses are steadily applied. The majority preferred using four in-class computers for easier use of ICTs, rather than only having access to the school laboratory. Furthermore, they unanimously perceive that the use of ICTs has an important influence on their students’ emotional dimension during planned activities, a moderate influence on their behavioral dimension, and a more disputable influence on their cognitive dimension. More globally, the students themselves display a relatively high academic engagement. In six months, the quality of their emotional engagement remained stable, the behavioral aspect was on the rise, but the cognitive engagement declined. The results also demonstrate that those students from underprivileged environments displayed a different evolution in the quality of their engagement in accordance with their school’s level of income. This research therefore demonstrates the importance the use of ICTs has on the quality of engagement during ICT tasks, the latter often proving to be better than in other types of learning tasks. Without being able to generalize, this study also allows one to greater grasp how student engagement is qualified and evolves for pupils at the end of elementary school in underprivileged settings. Recommendations for the setting and paths for future research are presented taking into account the limits and strengths of this doctoral thesis presented by articles.
