Obraz novináře napříč komiksovou tvorbou / A portrait of a journalist throughout the comic book production

Suchá, Helena January 2015 (has links)
The thesis A Portrait of a Journalist throughout the Comic Book Production deals with comics as a medium with a potential to create certain ideas about society. The aim of this thesis is to define typology of fictional journalists in comic books and to answer the question whether these comic images form stereotypes about journalistic profession. The thesis is divided into three parts: theoretical, historical and analytical. In the first part the author deals with the theoretical definition of terms used in the field of comics and media studies, which is closely related to the concept of the thesis (comics, journalist, stereotypes, interpretation). The second chapter summarizes the historical development of a comic's production on each continent. Special attention is devoted to a distinctive formation of the comic series in the Czech environment. Based on the previous research the author analyzes the comic book characters of journalists in the main part of the thesis. These are divided into categories according to the nature of the characters, gender differences and genres. The outcome of the performed analysis is a summary of the findings and the resulting conclusions. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)

After the 'peace processes' : foreign donor assistance and the political economy of marginalization in Palestine and El Salvador

Jamal, Manal. January 2006 (has links)
Under what circumstances does foreign donor assistance during war-to-peace transitions contribute to the strengthening of civil society and the deepening of democracy? I answer this question through a comparative study of civil society development in the Palestinian territories and El Salvador, where I conducted 130 interviews with directors of donor agencies, grassroots activists, and directors of NGOs. Divergent civil society developments in the Palestinian territories and El Salvador after the signing of peace accords in the early 1990s present a real puzzle given the pre-accord similarities in civil society organization between the two cases. Both the Palestinian territories and El Salvador had a legacy of rich, vibrant grassroots organization and civil society activity during their protracted conflicts. In both settings, grassroots organizations have played central roles in non-violent resistance, consciousness-raising, and the provision of community services. Moreover, after the initiation of the peace processes in both the Palestinian territories and El Salvador, foreign donors provided substantial assistance to civil society groups. However, their civil society developmental paths diverged sharply during the war-to-peace transition. In the Palestinian territories, existing civil society organizations have engaged less actively with their previous grassroots constituencies since the start of the war-to-peace transition, and the number of grassroots-based civil society organizations has decreased. Moreover, many of these organizations have been limited in their access to institutions that engage the state. In El Salvador, the re-constitution of civil society has led to its broad access to institutions that engage the state and to higher levels of grassroots inclusion in the political transformation process. / I argue that these divergent outcomes in the Palestinian territories and El Salvador reflect the differential effects that foreign assistance has on civil society after more or less inclusive political settlements. I find that in cases like the Palestinian territories, where the political settlement excludes important socio-political groups, foreign donor assistance is less likely to contribute to the strengthening of civil society or the deepening of democracy. Rather, foreign donor assistance to civil society is more likely to exacerbate political polarization and weaken civil society by further privileging those select groups already favored by the terms of the non-inclusive settlement. Conversely, after more inclusive political settlements like in El Salvador, foreign donor assistance can play a more constructive role in developing civil society and contributing to the deepening of democracy by encouraging grassroots organization, and expanding access to political institutions that engage the state.

Physical and chemical limnological study of an acid mine lake in Sullivan County, Indiana

Broomall, Phillip A. January 1992 (has links)
Southwestern Indiana has numerous lakes developed in abandoned coal mine spoils which support recreational sports fisheries. Some lakes, due to exposure to acid mine drainage from coal wastes and pyritic spoils, are unsuitable habitats for fisheries development. This study examines a publicly owned acid mine lake with an area of approximately 51 ha, following reclamation and elimination of acid producing areas in its drainage basin. Fifteen physico-chemical sample collections were made over a thirteen month period (1991-1992). Parameters sampled included pH, total acidity, iron, manganese, and aluminum. Comparisons were made to historic pre-reclamation water quality data and to established models of acid mine lake recovery. Due to the local topography and exposure to prevailing winds, the lake was generally well mixed throughout the study. Virtually no summer stratification was found, but typical winter season stratification occurred. The water column was well oxygenated throughout the study. Secchi disk transparency varied from 2.5 m to clear to lake bottom (6 m). This study found no significant change in lake water pH (2.9-3.0 to 3.0-3.2 s.u.) since reclamation activities in 1988. However, changes in total acidity and total metal concentrations had occurred since reclamation which suggested that the lake was in early recovery stages. No trends in water quality improvement were determined which could assist in planning toward the eventual establishment of a sports fishery. / Department of Biology

Lire Quino : poétique des formes brèves de la littérature dessinée dans la presse argentine (1954-1976) / Reading Quino : poetics of drawn literature brief forms in argentinian presse (1954-1976)

Latxague, Claire 29 November 2011 (has links)
From 1954 to 1976, Quino's work is essentially published in argentinian press. The humorist is very soon acknowledged by his profession and joins the pages of some of the most important journals and magazines of humor and information at this time. Adapting his creation to different editorial lines, he explores several forms of comic, from slapstick to absurdity, and even the satirizing of a society in crisis. His intense rhythm of publication and the diversity of forms used by the humorist – strip, page and cartoon – are favorable to elaborate a poetics of briefness. Efeito da inclusão de tiras poliméricas de polietileno tereftalato e da adição de cimento na resistência mecânica de solo arenoso laterítico /

Silveira, Maitê Rocha January 2019 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: The proposition of using alternative materials in construction that seek to reduce waste production or use previously generated waste is becoming increasingly necessary, as the construction industry is today one of the largest consumers of natural resources. Thus, this work evaluated the effects that the inclusion of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) strips cut from waste plastic bottles, and cement generate on the mechanical strength of a sandy soil from Bauru (SP). Unconfined strength tests were performed in pure soil and with the random inclusion of PET strips in different lengths and percentages. In addition to the unconfined strength tests, were also performed compaction tests with cement additions and with addition of PET strips, in order to analyze the effects of these inclusions on the sandy soil. Finally, direct shear tests were also performed on soil-strip, soil-cement and soil-cement-strip composites, making it possible to evaluate the individual effects of each inclusion on the shear strength of the analyzed soil. Regarding the uniaxial resistance, the soil resistance increased due to the inclusion of strips, regardless of the size and percentages analyzed. As for the direct shear tests, the cement addition was effective increasing both the cohesion and the soil friction angle in large proportions. The addition of strips to the soil-cement composite had its most pronounced effect on increasing soil cohesion, often reducing the friction angle. In general, the additi... An integrated computer simulator for surface mine planning and design

Chakraborty, Amal January 1985 (has links)
In the increasingly competitive coal market, it is becoming more important for coal operators to develop mathematical models for surface mining which can estimate mining costs before the actual mining begins. The problem becomes even more acute with the new reclamation laws, as they affect surface coal mining methods, productivity, and costs. This study presents a computer simulator for a mountaintop removal type of surface mining operation. It will permit users to compare the costs associated with different overburden handling and reclamation plans. It may be used to minimize productivity losses, and, perhaps, to increase productivity and consequently to reduce operating costs through design and implementation of modified mountain top removal methods. / M.S.
