Productivity gains decomposition and distribution of the price effects among stakeholders / Décomposition des gains de productivités et distribution des effets prix entre les parties prenantes

Shitikova, Karina 02 July 2018 (has links)
The financial performance of a firm depends both on its productive efficiency and the economic environment in which this firm performs its activity. This thesis adds to the literature by developing new links between productive efficiency, financial performance and productivity gains distribution. Namely, this doctoral thesis contributes in the three following ways. First, we propose an original way on how to decompose the profit gaps among firms at the cross-sectional level taking into account their productive inefficiency and then relating these productivity-based gaps to the price advantages/disadvantages of the firm’s stakeholders. Second, we define an indicator of price environment for a firm comparing its distance to the volume- and value-based efficiency frontier. These price environment effects were computed for US industries from 1987 to 2014. Third, we suggest a decomposition of the overall technical inefficiency of firms at the aggregated level into two components: individual technical and individual structural inefficiencies. This essay tends to show that generation of productivity gains and their distribution are two sides of the same coin. The former is related to the economic analysis of TFP based on the estimation of a production technology while the latter deals with an accounting approach of business performance.

Technologies in practice : Paul Ricoeur and the hermeneutics of technique

Carney, Eoin January 2018 (has links)
The problem that this thesis seeks to address is the hermeneutic tension between practical reason and technology. According to hermeneutics, the types of knowledge associated with practical understanding incorporate questions of the self and lived experience. In contrast, the types of knowledge and capability associated with modern technology are independent of questions of self-understanding. Technical approaches to practical dilemmas produce generalizable, detachable solutions, thereby disavowing the central role of hermeneutic appropriation in the process of understanding meaning. If a technology works in the same way across different contexts and applications, the notion of an interpreting, appropriating self seems superfluous to the question of technology. However, following an analysis of Paul Ricoeur’s distinctive understandings of hermeneutic distanciation, appropriation, and technique, I argue that technologies can become objects of hermeneutic engagement once we recognize their variable and uncertain nature at the practical level. Using Ricoeur’s conception of the productive circle between distanciation and belonging, the alienating distances associated with technologies can be re-read as moments of distanciation, i.e., as reflective outcomes of practical engagements that, in turn, project new possibilities for action an understanding. This means that our practical self-understanding is as bound to techniques and technologies as it is to more conventional hermeneutic objects like a text, narrative or artwork. For Ricoeur, hermeneutic techniques are meaningful because they reveal possibilities for action that would otherwise remain concealed. Likewise, subjects engaging with technologies develop unanticipated applications and functions at the practical level through appropriating technologies in novel, creative ways. In this way, practical self-understanding and technologies depend on one another for development. This mutual, interpretive interaction reveals a hermeneutic circle between the practical self and the technical devices and artefacts that mediate self-understanding at a distance.

Novel development of cell-based bioassays for biomedical applications.

January 2012 (has links)
Cell-based Bioassay (CBB) refers to any kind of assay which detection principle is based on direct monitoring of biological events in living cell systems. The work in this thesis is divided to two main chapters described as follows. / The first focus was the characterization of human erythrocytes toxicology using tunable nanopore-based resistive pulse sensing (RPS). We successfully monitored the size changes of the erythrocytes in hypotonic environment. Results were confirmed with flow cytometry and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). Furthermore, drug assays were performed, in which the erythrocytes were treated with polyphyllin D (PD) or tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA). Here we reported the first application of the tunable nanopore-based RPS on human live cell system. This RPS system served as a novel and low-cost technique for rapid analysis of bloodrelated diseases at point-of-care. / Another focus was cell-based bioassays in nanotoxicology. As nanoparticles have been widely applied in biomedical and biological aspects, health issues have been raised and the toxicity of nanoparticles is much concerned. In this study, we investigated the cytotoxicity of CTAB- and PEG-coated gold nanorods (Au-NRs). Through a series of toxicological studies and using human basophils cell line KU812, we demonstrated the biocompatibility of coating of Au-NRs was critical to the cytotoxicity to cells. CTAB-coated Au-NRs, rather than PEG-coated Au-NRs, were able to induce cell death and allergic response in KU812 cells. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Cheung, Ka Lun. / Thesis (M.Phil.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2012. / Includes bibliographical references. / Abstracts also in Chinese. / Members of Examination Committee --- p.i / Declaration --- p.ii / Publications --- p.iii / Abstract --- p.iv / Acknowledgements --- p.viii / List of Figures --- p.xi / Table of Content --- p.xii / General Introduction --- p.1 / Chapter Chapter 1 --- Cell-based Bioassays using Resistive Pulse Sensing --- p.13 / Chapter 1.1 --- Introduction --- p.14 / Chapter 1.2 --- Materials and Methods --- p.26 / Chapter 1.2.1 --- Preparation of human erythrocytes --- p.26 / Chapter 1.2.2 --- Resistive pulse sensing (RPS) --- p.26 / Chapter 1.2.3 --- Hemolysis assay --- p.27 / Chapter 1.2.4 --- Osmolarity assay --- p.28 / Chapter 1.2.5 --- Confocal laser scanning microscopy --- p.28 / Chapter 1.2.6 --- Flow cytometry --- p.29 / Chapter 1.2.7 --- Polyphyllin D (PD) assay --- p.29 / Chapter 1.2.8 --- Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) assay --- p.30 / Chapter 1.2.9 --- Statistical analysis --- p.30 / Chapter 1.3 --- Results --- p.31 / Chapter 1.3.1 --- Measurement of human erythrocytes using RPS --- p.31 / Chapter 1.3.2 --- RPS measurement of human erythrocytes in hypotonic enviornment --- p.36 / Chapter 1.3.3 --- RPS measurement of PD-treated human erythrocytes --- p.48 / Chapter 1.3.4 --- RPS measurement of TBBPA-treated human erythrocytes --- p.55 / Chapter 1.4 --- Discussions and Conclusion --- p.64 / Chapter 1.5 --- References --- p.68 / Chapter Chapter 2 --- Cell-based Bioassays on Human Basophils --- p.71 / Chapter 2.1 --- Introduction --- p.72 / Chapter 2.2 --- Materials and Methods --- p.74 / Chapter 2.2.1 --- Reagents --- p.74 / Chapter 2.2.2 --- Preparation of the CTAB-coated and PEG-coated nanorods --- p.74 / Chapter 2.2.3 --- Cell culture and preparation --- p.75 / Chapter 2.2.4 --- Alamar blue assay --- p.76 / Chapter 2.2.5 --- Calcein leakage assay and propidium iodide staining assays --- p.77 / Chapter 2.2.6 --- Histamine release assay --- p.78 / Chapter 2.2.7 --- Beta-hexosaminidase release assay --- p.79 / Chapter 2.2.8 --- Statistical analysis --- p.80 / Chapter 2.3 --- Results --- p.81 / Chapter 2.3.1 --- Physical and optical properties of the gold nanorods --- p.81 / Chapter 2.3.2 --- CTAB-, but not PEG-coated Au-NRs elicits allergic degranulation --- p.83 / Chapter 2.3.3 --- CTAB-coated Au-NRs are more cytotoxic than PEGcoated Au-NRs --- p.88 / Chapter 2.3.4 --- CTAB-, but not PEG-coated, Au-NRs cause plasma membrane permeabilization --- p.96 / Chapter 2.3.5 --- CTAB-, but not PEG-coated, Au-NRs disrupt plasma membrane asymmetry --- p.108 / Chapter 2.4 --- Discussions and Conclusion --- p.113 / Chapter 2.5 --- References --- p.116 / General Discussions and Conclusion --- p.118 / References --- p.124

The performer as shaman: an auto ethnographic performance as research project

Sakaria, Jacob Jacks January 2015 (has links)
A Research Report submitted towards a MAAD by Course Work and Research Report / This is an auto ethnographic project in which I explore how my personal and cultural narratives can be used for healing and transformation through a theatre making process. I look at performance as an object of making meaning while placing myself at the centre of the study as the subject of this research. During this process, I was looking at discovering a personal theatre making language with an aim of finding my voice. The outcome of my journey was an experimental creative project titled Eenganga which was performed in an alternative and nontraditional form in terms of space, text and the overall theatre making process. This study is an account of a journey that initially began as a performance ethnography project which collected cultural narratives of black urban traditional healers from Katutura, Windhoek, Namibia. There was an internal and an external data collection process. My body as a site of knowledge was the main research instrument.

A Program of Study for 21st Century Clarinet Techniques Featuring Five New Compositions for Unaccompanied Clarinet

January 2019 (has links)
abstract: As clarinet students progress in their studies, there comes a point at which many are assigned to perform contemporary repertoire that is either overplayed due to accessibility and use in pedagogy, or includes difficult extended techniques like microtones, multiphonics, and more. This project identifies a “gap” in unaccompanied clarinet repertoire and seeks to expand this repertoire by outlining a program of study featuring five newly commissioned unaccompanied clarinet solos through which students can learn both traditional and untraditional techniques. Each of the first four works focus on one aspect of clarinet technique—musicality, the altissimo register, microtones, and multiphonics, respectively—and the final work is a culmination of all these techniques. Included in this document is biographical information for each composer, program notes, a brief description, and a performance guide for each piece. Additionally, each work was recorded by the author and included with this document. / Dissertation/Thesis / Performer: Olivia Meadows, Composer: Zachary Bush / Performer: Olivia Meadows, Composer: Josh Gottry / Performer: Olivia Meadows, Composer: Kurt Mehlenbacher / Performer: Olivia Meadows, Composer: Spencer Brand / Performer: Olivia Meadows, Composer: Eric P.
