Nadeau, David 03 1900 (has links)
Alchemy, the science of handling spiritual influences through sacred metallurgy, and Pataphysics, a pseudo-scientific aesthetic combining Esotericism and humor, are the two main ideological foundations uniting Marcel Duchamp and Roberto Matta. On one hand, while Duchamp already has an interest for Esotericism in 1910, that is to say, about twenty years before his first encounter with Matta. On the other hand, Matta addresses, in his production, themes specific to alchemical literature, that is to say occult operations, marvelous states of matter and laboratory equipment. Also, symbolist and pseudo-scientific writers, read by Duchamp, and then by Matta, have an influence on the pataphysical humor, permeated by Esotericism, expressed in the production of both artists. Therefore, Les Célibataires, vingt ans plus tard, is an oil on canvas, elaborated in 1943, by Roberto Matta, representing a cosmic landscape, made of stars and black holes, of three alembics and of a large black machine. In this painting, Matta very freely reinterprets some elements from the Grand verre, a painting on glass by Marcel Duchamp, left unfinished in 1923. This master thesis examines the influence of Alchemy and of the iconography of Duchamp on Les Célibataires, vingt ans plus tard. In the first part, this study aims to highlight and to examine alchemical and pataphysical influences within the work of Matta. In the second part, our thesis aims to demonstrate how the work of Matta integrates in the Surrealist project of creating a new myth, in the continuity of the project of Marcel Duchamp.

O vztahu pokory a pýchy / About the Relationship of Humility and Pride

Smetana, Pavel January 2015 (has links)
This thesis deals with the research of humility from the view of its elusiveness - it does not define humility and it also does not even try to do so. Conversely, it walks around the phenomenon of humility and points at it in different ways. It uses examples, mostly from works of Comenius, and builds it with parallels from works of Jung, Foucault, Jünger, Drewermann and some other authors. It delimits humility against pride at example of different view of "epoché" in works of Comenius and Descartes; pride is basicly seen where human does not leave any unnaturalness and completely absorbs the world by his own opinion; work also uses Husserl's criticism of Descartes' view of "epoché" and Comenius' criticism of Machiavelli is also mentioned. Thence, the thesis sees the principle of humility in a close relation with the principle of faith or simply with the knowledge of the principle of some higher instance than the human's own sense is. The principle of humility is also nearby to the principle of grace - for this example the thesis researches Simone Weil's concept of "weight and grace"; grace from this point of view is an unpredictable step outside the performance-based part of human life. This thesis deals with mentioned phenomenons at first at the level of the visions of the world, later at the...

Tadeáš Hájek z Hájku a jeho přínos renesanční době v Čechách / Thaddaeus Hagecius ab Hayek and His Contribution to the Renaissance in Bohemia

Karlík, Ondřej January 2013 (has links)
The dissertation begins with an introduction about Renaissance, because Thaddaeus Hagecius lived and worked in this age. Renaissance was both an age of faith in hermetic sciences and an age of important scientific discoveries which fundamentally influenced the transformation of cosmology. My intention is to explain the characteristics of this period in the beginning of the dissertation. The next chapter is mainly focused on Hagecius's biography and an overview of his main writings. At first, I dealt with Hagecius's youth and his studies in Bohemia and foreign countries. Afterwards, I mentioned the areas that Hagecius had developed and the writings that he had published about them. I have more thoroughly expanded Hagecius's activity in medicine and astronomy because they were the main areas of his research. In another part of the chapter, I have outlined the friendship between Hagecius and Brahe. I have closed the chapter with an explanation of Hagecius's reference to alchemy. In the third chapter of my dissertation, I have introduced Hagecius's scientific efforts in four areas. These are as follow-astronomy, medicine, botany and brewing, because Hagecius contributed to these four areas with an interesting manner. These areas also show the huge diversity of Hagecius's interests.

To narrate the scientific facts of the time, Fontenelle deals, the book first published in 1686, the form of dialogues between supposedly caught him and a marquese on their evening walks around the castle gardens in the Summer. Both talk about the design of astronomical systems from Ptolomy and Copernicus. The Moon, the planets and the possibility of existence of other worlds like our own, are also discussed during the meetings. Narratives built using a communications strategies and arguments in order to facilitate understanding of abstract and complex astronomical phenomena by means of analogies. With the book, takes part in iniciatives to popularize science, in order to inform and entertain people without impose theories, staying somewhat on the fringes of science academies. In this paper we present the ideas of science contained in the book, trying to recognize, at the same time, the similarities and differences of those groups conveyed by scholars / Este trabalho apresentará os fatos científicos discutidos no livro Diálogos sobre a Pluralidade dos Mundos, escrito por Bernard Le Boyer de Fontenelle, em 1686, que teve grande repercussão com grande número de edições.

[en] THE ALCHEMICAL SYMBOLISM IN C. G. JUNGS WORK / [pt] O SIMBOLISMO ALQUÍMICO NA OBRA DE C.G. JUNG

ANA BEATRIZ FRISCHGESEL FONSECA 30 October 2003 (has links)
[en] This dissertation describes the way in which the alchemical symbolism is reinterpreted in the light of the Junguian theory. For this purpose, some of the concepts which allow this relation are then revised, that is, the notion of symbol, the mechanism of projection and the technique of amplification. Through their articulation, Jung intends to confirm the hypothesis of the collective unconscious.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Diogo de Lima e Calazans.pdf: 646870 bytes, checksum: 94fdc3a9ffcfa2825e6499dcd9e5d1bb (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-09-06 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / This research was developed under the scope of History of Science, starting from the hypothesis that Gerhard Dorn's (153/35 - 1584) work has played an important role in the validation of key concepts of Carl Gustav Jung's (1875 - 1961) understanding of alchemy. Although Jung's publications contain references to a great number of authors who wrote about the subject, some of them ended up becoming the main characters used by Jung to voice his psychological understanding of alchemy, as well as in the connections found between lab work and Analytical Psychology. Dorn's studies, The Speculative Philosophy and The Meditative Philosophy in special, were of great relevance when Jung defended his thesis about the role of the unconscious process during the alchemical opus. Moreover, the alchemist work became important for Jung's analysis concerning the process of matter transformation – stating that it would actually be the projection of an inner psychological development. Regarding Jung's last work on alchemy, the beliefs found in Dorn's treaty were then used to add the final alchemical shape to one of his most important concepts: the individuation process. With this goal in mind, we approached alchemy at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th as the starting point for this paper, contextualizing Jung's understanding and analyzing the methodology he used in his own studies. Part of this paper is also dedicated to a brief analysis of Gerhard Dorn's work by using the work of some historians of science as our reference. We also sought after themes within Jung's publications in which the alchemist would have used as a way to ground his Jungian hypothesis, in special the importance Jung gives him by claiming Dorn to be one of the first to study the process of individuation. At last, the final chapter is dedicated to the analysis of how Dorn's ideas worked in the constitution of this final concept / A presente pesquisa foi desenvolvida no âmbito da História da Ciência, a partir da hipótese que a obra de Gerhard Dorn (1530/35-1584) teria desempenhado importante papel na fundamentação de conceitos centrais sobre a interpretação de Carl Gustav Jung (1875-1961) da alquimia.

COLD AND WET, HOT AND DRY: THE KNOWING OF WOMAN’S KIND IN CHILDING, A FOURTEENTH CENTURY VERNACULAR OBSTETRICAL AND GYNECOLOGICAL TREATISE

2013 September 1900 (has links)
This thesis presents a single witness edition of The Knowing of Woman’s Kind in Childing, which is a 14th century vernacular obstetrical and gynaecological treatise found in British Library MS Additional 12195. Purported to be emulating medical texts of French and Latin origin, The Knowing of Woman's Kind in Childing is “a novel fusing of several different texts and theoretical traditions into a single work” (Green, “Obstetrical” 64). The Knowing of Woman’s Kind in Childing is an important and significant medieval medical text because it has a self-identified female audience and a female-orientated medical focus. Accompanying notes and emendations from the four other extant witnesses are also presented: Oxford Bodley MS Douce 37 (SC 21611), Oxford MS Bodley 483 (SC 2062), Cambridge University Library MS Ii. 6. 33, and British Library MS Sloane 421A. This thesis explores the folklore of the traditional herbs, medicinals, and compounds used in the treatise. A comparison of the material appended to all five of the extant witnesses is presented in Appendix A; Appendix B lists the incidence of rubrication found in this edition; originating source material for the Knowing of Woman’s Kind in Childing is presented in Appendix C; and an alphabetical catalogue of medicinals, in four tables, can be found in Appendix D.

Vanadium And Molybdenum Incorporated Mcm-41 Catalysts For Selective Oxidation Of Ethanol

Gucbilmez, Yesim 01 June 2005 (has links) (PDF)
ABSTRACT VANADIUM AND MOLYBDENUM INCORPORATED MCM-41 CATALYSTS FOR SELECTIVE OXIDATION OF ETHANOL G&uuml / &ccedil / bilmez, YeSim Ph.D., Department of Chemical Engineering Supervisor : Prof. Dr. Timur Dogu Co-Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Suna Balci June 2005, 144 pages In this study, V-MCM-41, MCM-41 and Mo-MCM-41 catalysts were synthesized by the one-pot alkaline and acidic synthesis methods. The as-synthesized catalysts were found to have high BET surface areas (430-1450 m2/g), homogeneous pore size distributions (2-4 nm), good crystalline patterns and high metal loading levels (Metal/Si atomic ratio in the solid = 0.01-0.16) as determined by the characterization studies. MCM-41 and Mo-MCM-41 catalysts were highly active in the selective oxidation of ethanol with conversion levels of 56% and 71%, respectively, at 400oC for an O2/EtOH feed ratio of 0.5. Both catalysts had very high selectivities to acetaldehyde at temperatures below 300oC. Conversions exceeded 95% with the V-MCM-41 catalyst having a V/Si molar ratio (in the solid) of 0.04 in the temperature range of 300oC-375oC for the O2/EtOH feed ratios of 0.5-2.0. Acetaldehyde selectivities changed between 0.82-1.00 at the temperature range of 150oC-250oC. Ethylene, which is listed as a minor side product of the selective oxidation of ethanol in literature, was produced with a maximum yield of 0.66 at 400oC at the O2/EtOH feed ratio of 0.5. This yield is higher than the yields obtained in the industrial ethylene production methods such as thermal cracking and oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane. Besides, the feedstock used in this work is a non-petroleum chemical, namely ethanol, which can be produced from sugar and crop wastes by fermentation. Thus, the findings of this study are also proposed as an alternative ethylene production method from a non-petroleum reactant at lower temperatures with higher yields. &Ouml / Z ETANOL&Uuml / N SE&Ccedil / iCi OKSiDASYONUNDA KULLANILMAK &Uuml / ZERE VANADYUM VE MOLiBDEN i&Ccedil / EREN MCM-41 KATALiZ&Ouml / RLERiNiN &Uuml / RETiMi G&uuml / &ccedil / bilmez, YeSim Doktora, Kimya M&uuml / hendisligi B&ouml / l&uuml / m&uuml / Tez Y&ouml / neticisi : Prof. Dr. Timur Dogu Ortak Tez Y&ouml / neticisi: Prof. Dr. Suna Balci Haziran 2005, 144 sayfa Bu &ccedil / aliSma kapsaminda, dogrudan sentez metoduyla, alkali ve asit ortamlarinda, V-MCM-41, MCM-41 ve Mo-MCM-41 kataliz&ouml / rleri sentezlenmiStir.
