Knowledge management in law firms in Botswana

The literature reveals enormous potential of knowledge management for law firms, yet research in knowledge management seems fragmented with extensive theoretical discussions but little empirical evidence. The aim of this study is to empirically determine the guidelines and techniques of knowledge management in law firms in Botswana in the light of the rapid changing legal environment. It identified the different categories of knowledge existing in the law firms in Botswana and considered the factors that would motivate or inhibit the adoption of knowledge management. It also identified the tools and technologies for knowledge management and agents and institutions necessary for knowledge management in law firms in the country. The study adopted the triangulation of qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection and analysis. Open and closed ended questionnaires and interview schedules were used to collect both qualitative and quantitative data that was analysed. The survey research design was adopted and census of all the lawyers in the country undertaken. Out of the 217 questionnaires distributed to the 115 registered firms, 140 completed questionnaires were returned, giving a return rate of 64.5%. From the study, it has emerged that law firms in Botswana are significantly affected by the changes in the legal environment. The adoption of formal knowledge management in law firms in Botswana is still however, at an initial stage. Most of the law firms do not have knowledge management policies and guidelines and there are still many challenges to the effective implementation of knowledge management. Nevertheless, it is clear that there is a growing awareness of the key role, importance and potential of knowledge management in an increasingly competitive environment as a means of making law firms more innovative and cost effective. Guidelines for knowledge management in law firms were established and several suggestions on how it can be successfully implemented made in the hope that this would not only improve the awareness and utilisation of knowledge management in the country but could also be adopted in other African countries whose legal environment is similar to that in Botswana. / Thesis (DPhil)--University of Pretoria, 2010. / Information Science / unrestricted

The nature and control of organic compounds in soda ash evaporate production

Solar evaporite systems are man-managed ecosystems which are highly vulnerable to biological,physical and chemical disturbances. The problems encountered in such systems are in many cases found to be associated with the microbial ecology and the design of the system. This project focussed on investigating the nature of organic compounds contaminating soda ash produced at a solar evaporite production system located at Sua Pan in Botswana. Several years after the plant was commissioned, problems, including accumulation of total organic carbon (TOC) and discolouration of the soda ash product were encountered. The salt produced also retained high moisture content and was coloured pink. These phenomena impacted severely on the economic performance of the enterprise. This study was aimed at determining the origin and fate of these organic compounds within the system in order to elucidate the nature of the problem and also to conceptualise a remediation strategy suitable to reducing its impact. This was achieved by analysis of both dialysed and solvent extracts of the influent brine (well-brine), brine in the ponds (T-brine) and the bicarbonate filter cake. Although complete identification of the organic compounds isolated was not undertaken in this study, spectroscopic analysis of compounds isolated, by UV, IR, NMR and MS, strongly indicated that fulvic acids, a component of the influent well-brine organics, contribute to the organic contamination of the final product. Part of this component, however, is degraded during the ponding process. It was shown that an extracellular polysaccharide (EPS) produced by Dunaliella. spp., which proliferates in the evaporation ponds, contributes in a major way to the accumulation of TOC in the system. This was demonstrated by relating the sugar profile of carbohydrates isolated from the pond brine and final product, being arabinose, xylose, 2-o-methyl hexose, mannose, glucose and galactose. Studies reported show that EPS production was enhanced when algal cultures were exposed to stress conditions of high illumination, increasing salinity and temperature, and nitrogen limitation. Studies undertaken for the development of a remediation process for this system have shown that nutrient stripping and bacterial systems could be applied to deal with the dissolved TOC fraction, whereas adsorption systems could deal with the particulate fractions. Algal systems showed most potential for the removal of nutrients in the influent well-brine compared to chemical processes.Complete removal of ammonium and phosphorus removal efficiencies of pproximately 50% were achieved in an unoptimised pilot-scale Dunaliella-based HRAP. While similar effects were demonstrated for chemical processes, some economic constraints were noted. The potential of halophilic bacterial systems for the degradation of organic compounds in brine was also demonstrated. The limitations on the performance of such systems, associated with the low metabolic diversity, and poor immobilisation of physico-chemical processes were found to have a very low impact on the dissolved TOC fraction of the brine, the removal of the particulate material was found to result in a 35% TOC reduction in the final soda ash product and the production of a white final product.halobacteria, however, were noted. Apart from a description of the microbial ecology of the ponds and the identification of major contributions to the TOC of the final product, a number of remediation strategies were evaluated and are described. These include chemical and biological stripping of nutrients sustaining microbial TOC production in the ponds, and also biological and physico-chemical processes for their removal once formed. An approach to sustainable, energy efficient design for low-cost housing in Botswana

The study was premised by the apparent lack of sustainability and poor quality of low cost housing of Botswana. The overall aim of the study was to investigate the possibility of integration of sustainability and resource efficiency into housing practice. The research first conducted a desk study into the low cost housing industry of Botswana which was followed by a survey in a representative area of Gaborone, the capital city of Botswana. The survey was in the form of a situational analysis which was conducted through user questionnaires. This was followed by structured interviews that were administered to stakeholders to gain insight into housing and design practice. In order to investigate the performance of different types of existing low cost housing, the following parameters were identified; planning and implementation, housing design, the building envelope and its response to its environment, materials and resources used in low cost housing, their application and consumption pattern. The study found that sustainable, energy conscious design of housing makes a considerable difference to the building’s thermal performance, user comfort, health, appropriate use of resources and the environment. It results in cost savings for services by the occupants, reduces institutional expenditure on programmes and maintenance costs, and reduces the negative impact on the environment by the building sector. Following the research, the study found that for successful integration of sustainability and energy efficiency in low cost housing for Botswana, there must be a balance in the integration of three primary elements; energy efficient housing, culture and regional identity and the environment. Institutional low cost housing was targeted as the first point of intervention for better impact. The study recommended a phased implementation approach. Investigating organisational factors that impact on engagement of knowledge workers in the banking sector of Botswana

There is extensive literature on employee engagement; its antecedents; linkages to positive business outcomes; and its positive impact on retention. Top performing organisations have even found that aligning the engagement strategies to the business goals drive performance outcomes. There is no universal definition of employee engagement and drivers, therefore, a general approach without due cognisance of worker demographics may result in the application of inappropriate engagement strategies. In this study, the focus is on knowledge workers within the banking sector of Botswana. Knowledge workers make up almost two thirds of organisations and are said to be unique and complex in their nature. Work to a knowledge worker is more mental than physical, hence, the need to use interventions aimed at the behaviour to increase their performance. The needs of a knowledge worker and that of the business ought to be integrated. An organisation that is able to identify those factors that would influence their engagement is promised high levels of productivity that would translate into profits and high retention. The main research problem for this study was to determine the strategies that should be used to engage knowledge workers within the banking sector in Botswana. A literature study was conducted to identify characteristics of knowledge workers, meaning of employee engagement and approaches to measuring employee engagement. Eleven organisational factors that have an influence on employee engagement and some of the engagement strategies were identified from literature. The eleven factors identified were: growth and development; rewards and recognition; trust in leadership; work/life balance; two way communication; mission, vision and values; quality of manager; relationship with colleagues; fairness of HR policies; job design; and accountability. An empirical study was also conducted to investigate which of the eleven organisational factors had an influence in the engagement of knowledge workers. The current engagement level of knowledge workers within the banking sector was measured using the Gallup Q12 measuring tool. The main findings from this research are that a significant number of knowledge workers are engaged. The findings of this study also coincide with the theoretical overview that there are organisational factors that have an influence on the engagement of employees. A significant finding was that, although knowledge workers differ in their perception of the organisational factors, they generally indicate that work/life balance initiatives are lacking in their workplace.

Experiences of mothers regarding the emotional support they receive from nurses while nursing their infants in the NICU in Princess Marina Hospital, Botswana

M.Cur. / An explorative, descriptive, contextual qualitative design was employed in an endeavour to unravel experiences of mothers with infants in the NICU regarding emotional support that they received from the nurses while nursing their infants in the unit. The sample of the study comprised eight (8) mothers who were selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through the use of semi- structured questions. All the interviews were audiotaped. Data were collected in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Princess Marina Hospital, Botswana. Data were analysed through the use of Tesch's method of data analysis, which is based on thematic content analysis. Themes which emerged were acceptance of the infant, encouragement to keep on visiting the infant every three hours, information provided on caring for the infant, encouragement on giving the infant motherly love e.g. cuddling, nurses having no time for the mothers, nurses' mistrust of mothers and finally neglect. The results of the study revealed that mothers did receive the emotional support that they needed, perceived as an important aspect to mothers nursing infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. It was found that some nurses did provide emotional support to mothers while other nurses had no time to support the mothers in need.

The influence of teacher beliefs on their assessment practices

After decades of implementing a teacher-centred curriculum in Botswana, a learner-centred curriculum was introduced into the education system in 1998. The course of this, teachers had to make a paradigm shift that radically affected the manner in which they were expected to assess learners. I utilised a qualitative case study as the basis for this research which sets out to investigate how the release of teachers influence their assessment practices. The following three findings emerged from this study: Firstly, although the curriculum recommended a learner-centred approach, teachers have been inadequately trained and prepared for learner-centred assessment. Secondly, despite their inadequate training, it seems that teachers had developed confidence in their ability to carry out these new assessment practices. Thirdly, despite this radical policy change, many teachers are still utilizing teacher-centred assessment practices. The role of community-based organisations in response to HIV/AIDS in Botswana : the case of Gabane Community Home-Based Care Organisation

This study examines the role of Community Based-Organisations (CBOs) in the response to HIV/AIDS as a development challenge drawing examples from the Gabane Community Home-Based Care CBO in Botswana. The study adopted qualitative methods of research and used group discussions, relative unstructured interviews, direct observation and literature review as methods of data collection. The study found out that HIV/AIDS is indeed a development problem and that it can be dealt with using some existing development approaches such as the sustainable livelihoods approaches. The study further identified specific roles that CBOs play in the response to HIV/AIDS. It also revealed the potential that CBOs have in achieving development. In addition, the study identified and outlined challenges that CBOs face in responding to HIV/AIDS. Key recommendations are that CBOs must integrate poverty reduction interventions in their activities. They must also form coalitions and strengthen their capacity to sustain their activities and manage partnerships. / Development Studies

Magister Artium (Development Studies) - MA(DVS) / The informal economy has continued to increase in developing countries, giving jobs and income to marginalised groups, the majority being women. The rise of the informal sector is perpetuated by exclusionary social policies and the continued increase in unemployment. In Botswana, street food vending, the most visible form of the informal sector trading, has evolved to be a survivalist activity that women populate. Increasing poverty levels, gender inequalities, and high unemployment rates have resulted in poor urban women being vulnerable to the stresses and shocks caused by these factors. Street food vending is therefore pursued by women to mitigate their vulnerability. Additionally, street food vending allows for more flexible working hours, thus accommodating women’s community, household, and productive roles. Despite women’s substantial contribution to Botswana’s informal economy, the government has not done much to support them.

The work-related experiences of psychologists in public health facilities in Botswana

The current study explored the work-related experiences of psychologists in public health facilities in Botswana. This topic has received minimal research attention, yet the World Health Organization has recognised the importance of treating mental health conditions. There is also recognition that there is a shortage of mental health practitioners, especially psychologists, in low to middle income countries such as Botswana. For this reason, the World Health Organisation has developed an initiative amongst its member states to increase access to mental health services by integrating them into the general health system. This is where psychologists in public health facilities are employed. In order to investigate how psychologists in public health facilities experience this integration, an explorative design was followed which adopted a qualitative methodology for data collection and analysis. Three semi-structured interviews were conducted with clinical psychologists who were recruited through purposive sampling. The data were analysed through thematic analysis. Generally, the participants experienced their work in the public health facilities as a professionally enhancing experience in spite of the various challenges encountered. They described a wide range of supportive and therapeutic functions that served the institutions and society in general.
