The philosophical activity configures one of the biggest incognitos among scholars researching Aristotle’s ethics. The Nicomachean Ethics (his most relevant ethical treatise) contains little information about such activity until the conclusions presented at the end of the work, when it is stated that contemplation (theoretike energeia) is the best of human occupations regarding the search for self-realization (eudaimonia). But, after all, how to understand such activity? What is the reason to identify it with the best way of living, given the variety of other activities able to be executed by men? Is it possible to understand it satisfactorily despite the limited number of passages referring to its exercise in the ethical treatise? In view of the systematic character of Aristotle and his considerations concerning the exactitude proper to each subject, contemplation will try to be understood only by what is exposed in the Nicomachean Ethics. Although the number of explicit informations about it is few, it will be proposed an exegesis of the excerpts referring to such activity and its virtue, sophia, as well as the analysis of its relation with other moments of the work. By exhausting information regarding contemplation in the Nicomachean Ethics, it will be possible to conclude whether its content is informative enough or not for the purposes of the work and its understanding. Moreover, establishing what contemplative activity consists in is essential to understand what Aristotle defined as the philosophical life (bios theoretikos), which he shared himself and also encouraged others to participate in several moments of the corpus. Apprehending contemplation in the way Aristotle exposed it reveals a way of life theorized and practiced by some of the most brilliant minds in the history of philosophy, who went to great lengths to try to comprehend and flourish their humanity in the best possible way.

The thesis presented here deals with aesthetic experiences done using Interactive Installations through Computer (IIC), products of a Media Art that are at the peak of their development. The main idea is to produce a thought about the dynamics of the interactivity with digital interfaces in virtual worlds produced as art, in a prospect of substantiating the practice of an interfaced contemplation of sensations, dealt by an interactive-body from its interaction with the installation. We deal with the concept of aesthetic contemplation following an approach that allows an understanding of its compatibility with digital technologies, far from the dichotomy active x passive and based on the concept of art as a set of sensations composed by affects and perceptions. The main hypothesis is based on the notion of contemplation as a contraction of sensations, according Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari, authors that make part of the philosophies of the difference.

This master’s thesis focuses on the dance scenes from three films by the Hungarian director Béla Tarr, in order to flesh out an aesthetic of time. The films’ analysis will be preceded by a research on the philosophy of time, centered around Paul Ricœur’s work Time and Narrative, in which the human time is described as a narrated time. Tracing his thought, we will define the notion of eternity as conceived by Augustine that is inseparable from a spiritual experience. We will then examine different issues of the history of dance in cinema concerning narrative, attraction and spirituality. This preliminary research will let us articulate our analysis between philosophy and aesthetic in order to describe a temporality expressed both intellectually in the films and lived by the viewer. Dance, while constructing a time of immanence that opposes the narrative regime, invites contemplation and opens an experience that is compatible with the Augustinian conception of eternity.

Katedrála v současnosti / Cathedral todayRampáčková, Monika January 2020 (has links)
The master's thesis deals with famous Notre-Dame de Paris, which was destroyed by fire in 2019. The work focuses specifically on the design of completion of the construction. The cathedral is situated in the historical centre of Paris on the Île de la Cité. A lot of damage was caused to the building after the devastating fire on 15 April 2019. The aim of the thesis was to create a spiritual place that would maintain its past, but at the same time manage to follow ecological solutions in the present. The new design of the attic creates a sacred place, in which we realize the importance of faith and the peace of God. The cathedral is open to the general public ? religious people from all over the world come here to experience the love, joy and happiness that the cathedral invokes. The whole attic can be described as an open space, which symbolizes infinity or immortality from the religious point of view. It represents the connection of the past, present and future. The space is designed to hold priestly celebrations and to be open for the public. It can also be used for various events, such as exhibitions of sculptures that survived the fire.

Cesta do nitra Martina H. / A Journey into the Mind of Martin H.Helán, Martin Unknown Date (has links)
The main aim of my thesis was to re-establish their former individual creation. When rendering images, I came from my heart that emotionally involved in deciding the final constellation of colors. The resulting series of images is processed oil painting technique using mainly medium formats. The composition of paintings based on geometric abstraction and draw on previous work by increasing the details of their own earlier paintings. The operational objective was to search for color variations that inherently express different emotional states. The work focuses primarily on finding harmonious interplay of color tones.

New Rituals : Materials, Objects and SpaceMadanska, Dessislava January 2020 (has links)
My project unfolds on three different scales: Materials, Objects and a Space. A research on materials and new technique for their transformation, a creation of functional objects out of the transformed materials, and finally, a spatial environment for the created objects. Real-life site visits to various factories and craftsmen, discussions with makers, sourcing leftover materials, transforming materials into borderline art/design objects are among the key elements of my research methodology. The three scales of my work are unified by the notion of Rituals. My understanding of rituals is not about creating a new religion but focuses rather on the activities in our everyday that can become rituals. It is about finding magic in the mundane. Daily routines and rituals are one of the main things that can keep us grounded, especially in a time of crisis. I believe that material explorations and working with the senses are important and relevant for the field of Spatial design and that my approach to engaging different scales within the project brings something new and yet not vastly explored.

Foundations for spirituality : a 'hermeneutic of reform' for a church facing crises inspired by St Francis of AssisiThönissen, Cornelis Jacques 06 1900 (has links)
Either relational contact with God is seen to be existentially attainable or God will become
increasingly irrelevant to contemporary society. For Church identity and effectiveness as she
serves the world, it is vital that God's initiating power can be seen to impact on this world.
As response to fourteen symptoms the Church faces as 'crises,' an inclusive hermeneutic
seeks fresh categories for a foundational spirituality capable of catalysing reform and
transformation. This comprehensive foundational hermeneutic hypothesised is grounded on
three foundational categories of experience, relationality and spiritual intuition. Any reception
of such transcendence has to occur subjectively ‘in experience.’ Evasive as it is, experience
is posited as a foundational category that needs to be rehabilitated through fundamental
philosophy and theology, as well as interdisciplinary explorations. It will be shown that the
challenges facing the contemporary Church are rooted in lost experience of transcendence.
However the entry point experience provides is never to become narcissistically selfreferential
but aims to establish a reciprocal relationship in faith. As an overarching category,
dynamic relationality will need to be socially transformative. The deep 'God-person' relational
mode, as it synthesises both human capacities and spiritual faculties, is experienced
interiorly and as such is called spiritual intuition. It is argued that the notion of, and capacity
for, intuition has been widely ignored and eroded. It is demonstrated that a 'reasonable
intuition' is a more synthetic faculty 'naturally' open to illumination and infusion by the Spirit
than an excessive traditional Church reliance on the workings of reason-intellect. Here the
witness of the life of St Francis of Assisi allows simpler and accessible entry into the
categories of affective experience and spiritual intuition under overarching relationality.
Francis as model, when compared to other Saints, substantiates the three foundational
categories. The conclusion chapter tests the foundational theory as it is applied to the
fourteen challenges the Church faces. The results of this study, and its applications, offer a
promising, fruitful humble metaphysic as 'solution' for the ‘Church in the world’ much in line
with Pope Francis' recent approaches. / Christian Spirituality, Church History & Missiology / D. Th. (Christian Spirituality)
