Men's Receptivity to Mental Health Help Seeking Intervention Messages: The Effects of Message Sender Gender and Message Content

LaFond, Faye 01 January 2018 (has links)
Men are much less likely to seek out mental health care services than women, despite having equally significant mental health related needs. The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of the construction and delivery of intervention messages designed to encourage men to seek help for mental health concerns. 225 men in the United States were randomly assigned to one of 4 vignette conditions featuring a pro-mental health help seeking message, varying based on the gender of the sender of the message (male vs. female) and based on the inclusion of information concerning misconceptions about therapy (inclusion vs. exclusion of information). A male message sender and a message that included information about misconceptions regarding therapy were both predicted to contribute to higher mental health help seeking intentions for men, and particularly so for men who conform strongly to masculine gender role norms. These hypotheses were not supported; however, the results replicated prior findings indicating that men who conform strongly to masculine gender role norms are less open to seeking help for mental health concerns. Additionally, men’s conformity to the specific masculine norms of self-reliance and violence both at least partially moderated the impact of message sender gender upon help seeking intentions. Further research should continue to investigate the potential effects of message sender gender and message content on men’s help seeking intentions by presenting the pro-help seeking message in person and by presenting a message that more explicitly challenges typical masculine attitudes about mental health care.

Objective: To elaborate, implement and analyze the effectiveness of an individualized alternative communication program for children with nonverbal cerebral palsy applied together in three of their daily life contexts: school, residential and clinical. Method: The participants were: 03 children diagnosed with cerebral palsy with their respective interlocutors from the contexts already mentioned: teachers, family members and therapists. The research was carried out at the children's school, at the residence of the participants and at an outpatient school unit linked to a university. To reach the objectives of the research was the design of multiple probes by situations (clinical, home and school) involving 2 phases probing and intervention. The instruments for data collection used were: Protocol of characterization of the participants, Interview script with the interlocutors on the communicative abilities of the child, Protocol for selection of the figures, Road map to analyze the perception of the interlocutors on the implementation of the supplementary communication and / or alternative and Questionnaire of social validity. The data collection and analysis were structured in 5 phases: Phase 1 Initial Survey: Knowledge of the characteristics of the participants and the initial repertoire, Phase 2, 3, 4 Intervention: Theoretical, practical training and preparation of the alternative communication resource and Phase 5 Final Score: Final Score of the acquired skills. Results: The results demonstrated: (1) demand for improvements in the communication of the interlocutors (of the 3 contexts) for failing to recognize the needs and desires of the children needing alternative resources to make this communication meaningful and effective; (2) lack of repertoire of participants' input in relation to alternative communication; (3) that the Multiple Probe Design allowed to carry out a planned intervention, in order to guarantee control of the variables; (4) acquisition of new communicative skills by the children and (5) that from the instrumentalization of the participants the act of "changing a pictographic figure by its corresponding object" took place, which made it possible for the child and the interlocutors to use the alternative communication features with independence, functionality and low level of help. Conclusion: The implementation of an individualized alternative communication program aimed at the interlocutors of children with nonverbal cerebral palsy in three of their development contexts favored the increase of the communicative abilities of these children and promoted changes in the behavior of children in the three contexts (school, clinic and house). Through the results, the research revealed that the Alternative Communication Program was effective in the intervention strategies adopted. / FAPESP/CAPES: 2014/17741-6

Jauranga: An approach to paracas ocupation in the valleys of Palpa / Jauranga: una aproximación a la ocupación paracas en los valles de Palpa

Reindel, Markus, Isla, Johny 10 April 2018 (has links)
The excavations in Jauranga revealed a sequence of archaeological contexts distributed over a stratigraphy with a depth of morethan three meters. Within this stratigraphy we found the remains of numerous adobe walls pertaining to structures of a settlement dating to the Middle and Late Paracas periods. Forty nine funerary contexts from different phases of the Paracas culture were embedded in the stratified layers and structural remains. Furthermore, we recorded 31 intrusive burials of the Nasca culture. The stratigraphic analysis of the structural remains in their relation to the associated artifacts and non-artifactual finds, the ty- pological analysis of the ceramic artifacts from the stratified layers and from the burial contexts, as well as numerous radiocarbon dates allowed us for the first time to establish a chronological ordering of the developmental phases of the Paracas culture based on stratigraphic contexts. The results of these analyses helped to confirm the validity of the results of the stylistic seriation of the Paracas ceramics from the Ica valley published by Menzel, Rowe and Dawson in 1964. Based on the stratigraphic evidence recorded in Jauranga, we discuss aspects of chronology, type and function of the site, as well as their implications for the local and regional archaeological contexts.

Isbell, William H. 10 April 2018 (has links)
Rethinking the Middle Horizon: A Case Study at Conchopata, Ayacucho, PerúKnowledge about the past is socially created, in historical contexts that influence how we understand and interpret archaeological information. Consequently, as time change we must be prepared to modify our thinking about prehispanic cultures. The Middle Horizon cultural period and the archaeological site of Conchopata, in Peru's Ayacucho valley, seemed very well understood but recent excavations have revealed unexpected new possibilities.Archaeologists believed that a new religious ideology spread from Tiwanaku initiated the Middle Horizon at Conchopata. But newly defined «D»-shaped temple buildings, associated with the art called «Tiwanaku» have no parallels in Tiwanaku´s Lake Titicaca homeland.Conchopata was considered haphazard in form, occupied primarily by specialists in the production of pottery. But new research shows that much of Conchopata's architectural core was planned and enclosed by perimeter walls, and a palace may have been located in the city's architectural core. Numerous new offerings of giant pottery have been excavated, suggesting that these ceremonial ceramics may have been brewing and serving sets for feast organized by ancient kings. Several forms of burials have been identified ranging from interments to Bedrock Cavity Interment and Mortuary Building Interments, and one grave might have been a royal tomb. Finally a suite of radiocarbon dates confirm much thinking about Middle Horizon chronology, but they suggest that Tiwanaku iconography did not arrive at Conchopata until the middle of the phase, when a long tradition of polychrome ceramic painting already existed. Apparently Conchopata was more than the recipient of new religion and art from the Altiplano. We must be prepared to abandon old ideas about Conchopata and the Middle Horizon as more convincing understandings emerge.

Angeles, Rommel, Pozzi-Escot, Denise 10 April 2018 (has links)
Middle Horizon Textiles: Evidence from Huaca Malena, Asia ValleyArchaeological research was undertaken in 1997 at Huaca Malena in the Asia valley of Peru's south central coast, under the auspices of the Asia Municipal Government. The archaeological complex consists of an Early Intermediate architectural complex that has a huge Middle Horizon Epoch 2B and 3 cemetery intruded into its upper platforms. These intrusive tombs consist of circular pits containing several individuals. Textile wrappings on the bodies reveal a stratified society in which elites possessed extremely fine weavings characterized by Wari iconography reminiscent of the Conchopata and Atarco ceramic styles. Also associated, however, are textiles from other regional traditions, providing a new and broader vision of Middle Horizon societies.

The Use of the Elaboration Likelihood Model and Attitude Change in Personality Disorder Patients

Kaplan, Jillian 01 January 2018 (has links)
Previous research has studied the relationship between the use of the Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM) and various personality traits when individuals are presented with persuasive information. This study aims to examine attitude change toward treatment in personality disorder (PD) patients using the ELM. It is predicted that patients of BPD, SPD, and OCPD will be more likely to use the central route of processing, while patients of NPD will be more likely to use the peripheral route of processing when evaluating persuasive information due the personality traits characteristic of the respective disorders. Selected patients of the four PDs of interest will be randomly assigned to read a positive persuasive appeal containing information more likely to be persuasive to an individual using the central route of processing or, conversely, the peripheral route of persuasion. Differences in treatment attitudes before and after reading each appeal will be compared in a 2x4 Factorial ANOVA design. Understanding individual differences in information processing and attitude change toward treatment depending on personality disorder could potentially allow for mental health professionals to consider these tendencies when encouraging treatment for individual personality disorder patients.

Valores e funções dos advérbios locativos no português popular brasileiro / The behavior of the locative case in the Portuguese popular spoken in Brazil

Raquel Marcondes Nogueira 12 September 2007 (has links)
In this research we analyze, of a point sight synchronic and quantitative, the functions that the locative case aqui, aí, ali and lá are used in the sentence and in the text. For that, we work with the range of the Portuguese popular spoken in Brazil, more specifically the dialect utilized by the informers of the Filologia Bandeirante project (MEGALE, 1998) and by the talkative that supplied stuff for organization of the Banco de Dados do Português Popular Falado na Cidade de São Paulo (RODRIGUES, 1987). The main question analyzed was the syntactic function of the adverbs locative case, for instance if would be always adjunct, as some Traditional Grammar (GT) believe or it would be able to exercise the predicate arguments function, like some studies already aim. Adopting the theoretical-methodological budgets of the Functional Grammar of DIK (1989) and of the Sociolinguistics Variationist, our objective is going to describe, analyze and explain the behavior of the locative case, seeking identify the possible contexts that favor the appearance of these we will have as argument, or on the other hand like satellites of EsCo.
