Cultivating an engaged workforce: The roles of leader personality, motivation, and leadership style

Taylor, Amy Marie 01 January 2012 (has links)
This study explored the links between leadership style, leader personality, and motivation to lead, with employee engagement. Transformational leadership, transactional leadership, and abusive supervision styles were examined in relation to levels of employee engagement via a sample of n=195 employees and n=130 managers. Consistent with findings from Christian, Garza, and Slaughter (2011), transformational leadership showed a positive link to employee engagement (r= .38, p< .05). On the opposite end, abusive supervision was negatively related to employee engagement (r= -.27, p< .05). Contingent reward leadership showed a positive link to employee engagement (r= .32, p< .05). Relationships between personality and leadership style were framed according to the socioanalytic framework (Hogan & Shelton, 1998). This study did not find any significant differences in the relationships between the expected leadership behaviors and the traits directed at "getting along" with others vs. "getting ahead" to achieve power and status. Motivation to lead (Chan & Drasgow, 2001) was expected to moderate the relationships between leader personality and leadership style; however, these predictions were not supported in this study. Future directions for research, including other individual difference variables that may predict leadership styles, are discussed.

Can Quantitative Assessment of Moral Identity Be Improved?

Baker, David Adrion 01 May 2015 (has links)
According to results from Aquino and Reed (study 5, 2002) and Hall and Derryberry (2010), high means and very low standard deviations of the average score for each question for both the internalization and symbolization scales of the Moral Identity Scale (MIS) are common. This study attempts to measure the extent to which a person considers morality to be a central part of his or her self-concept. Because participants may feel pressure to respond in a certain way on the MIS, the role of social desirability to respond favorably is very plausible. The current study, therefore, attempts to reduce socially desirable responding on the moral identity construct. The hypothesis of this study was that the revised Moral Identity Scale—compared to the original Moral Identity Scale—would display a reduction in skewness, a reduction in social desirability effects, and an increase in the ability to predict moral functioning. Analyses partially supported a reduction in social desirability and supported an increase in the ability to predict moral functioning. However, analyses did not support a reduction in negative skewness.

Attraction Process Among Identified Sport Fans

Cyr, Ciara Yvonne 01 December 2014 (has links)
Since automatic attention is given to beauty, and appearance is the first thing noticed upon meeting a person, one would assume attractiveness is the more important selection factor for a relationship partner. Theories such as the matching hypothesis and mortality salience dispute this idea. The matching hypothesis proposes selection occurs between individuals similar in attractiveness, not necessarily selecting the most attractive individual available. Mortality salience suggests attractiveness is used in selecting a partner for short-term relationships, but discounts physical attractiveness for long-term relationships. This theory proposes an ideal partner for a long-term relationship is selected based on similarity of beliefs. Mortality salience is centered on beliefs of religious groups, with which individuals can become highly identified. Individuals can also become highly identified with a sport team. This connection can be even stronger than the connection with a religious group. Since this connection is so strong, and identification with a religious group can influence selecting a partner, identification with a sport team might have a similar influence. This study attempts to bridge the gap from attraction and dating to sport fan identification. The first hypothesis is sport fans highly identified with the University of Kentucky men’s basketball team will rate a model fan for that team as more attractive than a model fan from a rival team. The second hypothesis is those fans will rate the model fan for the University of Kentucky’s basketball team as more attractive when prompted with a long-term relationship condition as opposed to a short term condition. Participants in this study completed demographics before being randomly assigned an opposite sex dating profile page. They were informed the website they were evaluating was either for people looking for long-term or short-term relationships. They completed a questionnaire about their opinion of the person in the profile, and the Sport Spectator Identification Scale for both the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville men’s basketball teams. The hypotheses and previous research were not supported. This study did produce other interesting findings. The additional findings lend some support to the sociometer theory proposing self-esteem as an important relationship factor.

Plan Modifications Within The Contexts Of Planning Control Mechanisms, Mersin Case

Unlu, Tolga 01 December 2005 (has links) (PDF)
Urban development plans in the Turkish planning system envision that a time would come and the spatial development of any city would be completed in the specific planning period. The allegation of the planning system is to control every detail during urban development. However, the static nature of development plans within the regulatory context cannot provide strategies to manage the dynamic nature of the socio-political context. This contradictory situation involves tensions in planning control mechanisms and creates cleavages within the spatial context. &amp / #8216 / Changes in the spatial context&amp / #8217 / are the indicators of such cleavages. They are conceived to be significant since they might enhance or erode the distinctiveness of a place. To the extent that possibility of change is disregarded in static nature of urban development plans, plan modifications become the primary tools for emergence of the &amp / #8216 / changes in spatial context&amp / #8217 / . They usually emerge through individual actions and individuals begin to produce their own pattern of urbanism in the urban built environment. Management and control of &amp / #8216 / changes in the spatial context&amp / #8217 / is at the very center of the study. It is about shaping the physical form of development rights. The study aims to evaluate the qualitative and quantitative influence of plan modifications on the spatial context through a study within the whole contexts of planning control mechanisms. Hence, the study also concentrates on the operation of planning control mechanisms in the Turkish planning system. The plan modifications are evaluated throughout a detailed analysis held within boundaries of Municipality of Greater Mersin.

Given the new dynamics of interaction and the structures of society in mediatization, the organizational contexts undergo a reconfiguration, bringing to organizations new challenges such as the multiplication of the means of communication, the intensification of the heterogeneities of the subjects and the formation of a symbolic market that establishes itself from a network of meanings, produced by the subjects based on their own values and experiences, as well as by the interaction of these subjects in a network. Therefore, organizations are being strained to adapt their strategies to the new challenges of managing their products/services and also to build relationships with people. This happens because, in the emergence of a market of meanings, all the totality of the organizations' actions, their narratives, their products and their positions will be perceived by subjects and will serve as the basis for forming their opinions and concepts about brands, as well as their image and reputation. In this perspective, integrated communication, based on a complex view, aims to validate the dialogic-recursive relations of organizational processes, so that the organizations daily life are also in line with the transformations of societies, insofar as the organizations acts will be reflections of values shared by the subjects. In light of the above, this study aims to identify the main implications of integrated organizational communication practices in contemporary organizations, from the perspective of directly active professionals in this context of communication, considering the mediatized contexts and their new challenges to the practice of integrated organizational communication. For this purpose, a conceptual study was carried out and applied, for exploratory, descriptive and interpretative purposes, using as data collection technique a semi-structured interview with professionals working in communication agencies in the city of Bauru/SP. In addition, Content Analysis was applied to analyze and interpret the results. It can be concluded the main challenges in the development of integrated communication correspond to the managers' resistance in investing in diversified communication strategies the contracting of agency services do not include the four areas of communication; and a functionalist and ambiguous perspective of the integrated communication concept by the agencies. / 00.889.834/0001-08 / 00.889.834/0001-08

Legitimation through openness : managing organisational legitimacy through open strategy in a pluralistic context

Morton, Josh January 2017 (has links)
This research explores how an open strategy approach can be used to manage organisational legitimacy in a pluralistic context, characterised by the competing demands of key stakeholders. Open strategy demonstrates an interest in strategising processes becoming more inclusive and transparent (Hautz et al., 2016). Open strategy work to date has focused on its uses and implications, and how strategic inclusion and transparency are being displayed in different organisational contexts. Much open strategy literature also associates the central purpose of open strategising activity with organisations seeking to manage legitimacy (e.g. Chesbrough and Appleyard, 2007; Whittington et al., 2011; Tavakoli et al., 2017), particularly through ensuring that their actions are desirable in the opinion of key stakeholders (Suchman, 1995). Whilst a small number of studies have explicitly focused on open strategy and legitimacy, these do not go beyond illuminating legitimacy as a potential effect (Gegenhuber and Dobusch, 2017) or outcome (Luedicke et al., 2017). Absent has been research attempting to specifically understand open strategy as a process of legitimation (Uberbacher, 2014), and there remains a need to unpack and elevate the significant potential of open strategy approaches for managing legitimacy further. To address this gap, this research presents an in-depth single case analysis of an organisation undertaking the development of a new four-year strategic plan using an open strategy approach. A number of data collection methods were used, including completion of 30 semi-structured interviews, participant observations, and collection of significant social media and documentation data, to explicate the concepts of open strategy and organisational legitimacy, addressing the question; How does an open strategy approach represent a process of legitimation for managing the competing demands of organisational stakeholders? . A pluralistic context, a UK-based professional body, is the basis for the empirical work. It is acknowledged that interrogating the intricacies of strategising in pluralistic contexts, and the inherent competing demands of stakeholders, might offer new perspectives, and a useful means of expanding the contextual base of practice-based strategy work (Jarzabkowski and Fenton, 2006). However, studies of open strategy in pluralistic contexts remain near non-existent in the literature (Lusiani and Langley, 2013). In the organisational legitimacy literature, there is much discourse on how legitimacy is managed and gained through specific legitimation processes and strategies, and increasingly such a focus has been adopted to recognise how organisations might manage legitimacy demands in contexts defined by plurality, amidst diffuse power and divergent objectives (Denis et al., 2007). In this study, a practice-based activity theory framework is used (Jarzabkowski 2005; Jarzabkowski and Wolf, 2015) to explore legitimacy in relation to organisational direction and priorities, and as a means of redefining the organisation s core goals in an enactment of strategic openness. The work here conceptualises how the case organisation has adopted a plethora of open strategising practices for legitimacy effects (Suddaby et al., 2013), providing a detailed account of how different dynamics of open strategising activity connect to specific forms of legitimation over time. The findings indicate that different open strategy dynamics represent the case organisation switching between distinct approaches to legitimation, as a means of managing the competing legitimacy demands of organisational stakeholders in a flow of activity. Through this narrative, a greater perception of legitimation as a core purpose of open strategy is provided. Overall, this research offers an important contribution by accentuating the principal relevance of organisational legitimacy in open strategising, particularly through elevating legitimacy beyond being understood as an effect or outcome in open strategy work. Further, this more explicitly brings open strategy into close alignment with the organisational legitimacy literature and its theoretical conceptions (Lawrence et al., 2009; Suddaby et al., 2013), which is imperative for understanding the potential importance of open strategy as a means of legitimation.

Briceño, Jesús, Millones, Mario 10 April 2018 (has links)
The Earliest Human Remains of Northern Perú: Balances and PerspectivesGenerally in American prehistory the very first protagonists have been kept outside of the main discourse. This absence of information is evident if we review the construction of this history and accept that there has been a preconceived pact of indifference towards skeletal remains. The north of Peru is a good example and choice for the objectives of this paper. Given this lack of information, we present our findings about these "lost" bodies in order to finally integrate these data into the study of the earliest people of the Americas.

As a qualitative research, this study aimed at investigating features of both spoken language and oral proficiency assessment in an online FL learning context, which is constituted by teletandem interactions. The information was collected in the scope of the Teletandem Brazil project (TTB) by means of interviews, audio and video recordings of teletandem conversation, questionnaires, teletandem tracking sheets and field notes. The data were categorized according to the contents revealed in each type of research instrument and analyzed with the support of a theoretical framework that includes discussions on the PSOL, Assessment, Distance Education and Portuguese spoken in Brazil. The results show that the teletandem conversation is a linguistic and cultural interchange between Brazilian and foreigner partners powered by the feedback provided. The partners‟ intervention to help each order in relation to linguistic and cultural aspects during the conversation is essential to contextualize and keep the progress of interaction, as well as to provide the support required in order to acknowledge and give attention to the interlocutor‟s speech. Taking into account the features of the spoken language in online conversation, the natural speech flow present in language proficiency assessment scales is discussed, mainly related to criteria such as oral comprehension, fluency and interactional competence. As part of the TTB activities, the teletandem tracking sheet showed to be a powerful assessment instrument to promote collaborative learning. The strength of this kind of learning and evaluation trigger... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

Inserted in the research line Family in the Social Sciences, this doctoral research deals with narratives of trajectories of people using drugs institutionalized in Therapeutic Communities in Brazil and Portugal. The historical-geographical cut is shaded by the years 2014 to 2017, with residents in the State of Bahia-BR and in the city of Porto-PT. It was observed, through a qualitative approach based on in-depth interviews, that vulnerabilities can be aggravated by drug use, interfering significantly in family, social and life projects. This put, this doctoral thesis aims to describe and analyze the history of life referring to a group of people who consumed crack and other drugs until joining Therapeutic Communities (CTs). It was elaborated through a bibliographical review and field research in five Therapeutic Communities. The interviews were: three professionals from the Government of the State of Bahia from the areas of Human Rights and drugs, six professionals from the Therapeutic Communities (Social Assistants, Psychologists, and Monitor (a)) and eleven people interned among the five Therapeutic Communities. Grounded Theory (Data Based Theory) was used as research methodology and three types of interviews were used as a collection tool: one for the professionals of the State of Bahia; one for the professionals of the Therapeutic Communities and another for the interns. Specifically constructed for this research, with scope to analyze: the beginning of use of psychoactive substances, process of access and acquisition of drugs, violence suffered and practiced, public policies on drugs developed in Brazil and experiences in Therapeutic Communities and relational contexts . The main results reveal that: the beginning of the use of psychoactive substances is influenced by groups of friends / people of intimacy, arousing curiosity; that the greatest violence (physical and psychological) and practices of crimes occur in the search for psychoactive substances; people are more susceptible to sexually transmitted infections (STIs / AIDS) because their bodies have become a "bargaining chip" and neglect security measures (eg, use of condoms); women are subject to unwanted or unplanned pregnancies; the need for adequacy of public policies on drugs and the Therapeutic Communities. In spite of the criticisms, they are important equipment, for the Governments (Brazil and Portugal) like policies of facing the dependence of the drugs.
