The Uber Boundary : Contextualizing the Organizational Boundary of a Digital Platform Organization

Furulind, Johanna, Sjöqvist, Olivia January 2019 (has links)
Digital platform organizations challenges the organizational landscape by utilizing technology enabling cost efficient transactions. Uber is a commonly known example of such an organization, where tensions have arisen in various local contexts due to that the organization draw their boundary tightly around the platform to the benefit of organizational efficiency. Uber has as a consequence, been highly questioned in its liability of their primary operations: Is it a technology platform, or a transportation firm?   This thesis sets out to answer:  How is the organizational boundary of Uber challenged in various local contexts? The purpose is to provide an explanation towards how the organizational boundary of a digital platform organization could be understood in relation to local context, and how it can or cannot evolve in regards to these contexts. The results show that context matters for the boundary of Uber. In addition, a pattern amongst the context specific events emerged influencing the boundary. These can be categorized into four configurations: Adjusting, Expanding, Withdrawing and Intertwining. Each of the configurations explain the underlying reasons for the varying fluctuations the boundary of Uber show, and thus answer how the organizational boundary of Uber is challenged in various local contexts.

Brinquedoteca hospitalar na cidade de São Paulo: exigências legais e a realidade / Toy libraries in hospitals in Sao Paulo: legal demands and reality

Teixeira, Sirlândia Reis de Oliveira 11 April 2018 (has links)
The research focused on discussing toy libraries in hospitals as an asset for compassionate healthcare in pediatric hospitals with long-term children patients. The main objective is to determine the situation of hospital toy libraries in the city of Sao Paulo before and after the Federal Law n. 11.104/2005 which states their implementation as mandatory, considering as a research hypothesis that this law should be broadened so as to include the presence of a toy library specialist, a play professional at the toy library to guarantee its full and fair use. With regards to methodology, the research is categorized as qualitative and it used a full integrative literature review, analyzing 324 published essays or books in Brazil and 43 abroad, ranging from 1994 to 2014. An exploratory research was conducted in 20 toy libraries in international hospitals to determine how toy libraries work outside Brazil. In national territory a field research was conducted with the use of a questionnaire filled in by 11 professionals who work in toy libraries in Sao Paulo and, finally, an exploratory activity to listen to childrens opinion about the play situation was also conducted. The results show that the majority of national and international researches aimed at understanding play in healthcare contexts are concentrated in the area of Nursery. Research data in international toy libraries show a concern about a diversity in play activities for children. After analyzing the results from the in loco research it was clear that there is a real demand for professional education for the staff who work at toy libraries in Sao Paulo and also the perception of such spaces as an inherent part of hospitalized childrens treatment. The voices of the children make it evident that the purpose of the existence of the toy library is the right to play in the hospital context. It was observed that after the implementation of the Federal Law n. 11.104/2005, despite the increase on the number of installed toy libraries in the city of Sao Paulo, such spaces were constituted in an inadequate way in terms of supplying the demands of childhood and being an effective compassionate healthcare strategy. The findings on this research demonstrate that broadening the text of the Federal Law n. 11.104/2005 is needed and it to make the childrens right to play at the hospital integral.

Novas Narrativas da Comunicação em Organizações / New Narratives of Communication in Organizations.

Ribeiro, Emiliana Pomarico 05 April 2019 (has links)
Questions about the new contexts of contemporaneity - postmodern, digital, ephemeral, fast, complex, and metaphorical contexts - suggest thoughts on communication in organizations. We must rethink paradigms, theories, and ideas according to the historical, political-economic, social, cultural, religious, and digital-mediatic moment. Indeed, new contexts bring new ways of individuals to feel and be in the world. Consequently, new postures of communication to dialogue with this new subject are required. Owing to the new dynamics, both those responsible for communication in organizations and workers, including leaders and influencers who attend the organizational environment, can often experience some of the so-called 21st-century pains in this setting. They include pressures, self-pressure, attention deficit, nomophobia, depression, stress, anxiety, dehumanization, lack of sense and purpose, and even a supposed identity crisis. These pains may hinder the assertiveness and effectiveness of communication in the mentioned environment. The present thesis uses this panorama as a background and intends to detect - from the highly regarded narrative paradigm concept - how would be the new narratives of communication in organizations, appropriate to these new contexts and these new ways of feeling and being in the world. New narratives are mainly based on humanization, understanding positive and negative affectivities, stimulating the imagination, co-creation, respect for diversity, with care and compassion for the other and the environment, and with a focus on understanding the micronarratives of each one attending the organizational environment.

Everyday people are exposed to different items’ offering that infer their interest and anticipate decisions. The context information (such as location, goals, and entities around a context) plays a key role in the recommendation’s accuracy. Extending contexts snapshots into contexts histories enables that information to be exploit. It is possible to identify context’s sequences, similar contexts histories and even predict future contexts. In this work we present Vulcont, a recommender system based on a contexts history ontology. Vulcont merges the benefits of ontology reasoning with contexts histories in order to measure contexts history similarity, based on semantic and ontology’s properties provided by context’s domain. Vulcont considers synonymous and classes’ relations to measure similarity. After that, a collaborative filtering approach identifies sequences’ frequency to identify potential items for recommendation. We evaluated and discussed the Vulcont’s recommendation in four scenarios in an offline experiment, which presents Vulcont’s recommendation power, due the exploit of semantic value of contexts history.

Gramaticalização de combinação de orações: estruturas para + infinitivo no português / Grammaticalization of combined sentences: estructures with + infinitive in portuguese

Sartin, Elisangela Baptista de Godoy 29 August 2008 (has links)
This dissertation mastering work presents the analysis of the degree cohesion among combined sentences in their structure with the following composition: the subordinate is non-finite and it has the preposition para (to) heading it. In a synchronous approach, we search the functional behavior of this structure in the spoken and written modality by means of formal criteria of control in order to apprehend the motivation of each interpretation. The structure to + infinitive has been used in other semantic contexts with several different meanings from the purpose meaning (the initial one). These other meanings have demonstrated a more abstraticized feature and, in some cases, a syntactic blending sufficiently accented with the main sentence. This confirmation has given the possibility of claiming the instauration of an intense grammaticalization process. There is a view in which not all the sentences that are configured in this structural standard type sign to the purpose semantic feature in the Brazilian Portuguese. So I proceed to the identification of the functional standards that denounce the language in its dynamicity, it also generates innovative functions in order to embody the communicative needs of the speakers. This dissertation is presented as a contribution from the linguistic science to the pedagogical work, in a really interesting dialogue that involves the student perception, the pedagogical teacher decision and the linguistic contemporary theoretical discussion.

Valores e funções dos advérbios locativos no português popular brasileiro / The behavior of the locative case in the Portuguese popular spoken in Brazil

Nogueira, Raquel Marcondes 12 September 2007 (has links)
In this research we analyze, of a point sight synchronic and quantitative, the functions that the locative case aqui, aí, ali and lá are used in the sentence and in the text. For that, we work with the range of the Portuguese popular spoken in Brazil, more specifically the dialect utilized by the informers of the Filologia Bandeirante project (MEGALE, 1998) and by the talkative that supplied stuff for organization of the Banco de Dados do Português Popular Falado na Cidade de São Paulo (RODRIGUES, 1987). The main question analyzed was the syntactic function of the adverbs locative case, for instance if would be always adjunct, as some Traditional Grammar (GT) believe or it would be able to exercise the predicate arguments function, like some studies already aim. Adopting the theoretical-methodological budgets of the Functional Grammar of DIK (1989) and of the Sociolinguistics Variationist, our objective is going to describe, analyze and explain the behavior of the locative case, seeking identify the possible contexts that favor the appearance of these we will have as argument, or on the other hand like satellites of EsCo.

Collaborative Teamwork: For Better or For Worse

Gerhardt, Clara, Chandler, Kristie, Hill, Celeste 09 March 2018 (has links)
This poster presentation describes the group dynamics within a collaborative learning setting. In the Parenting class, which is a requirement within the Human Development and Family Science major, students are encouraged to choose their own groups which will then function as family units for the duration of the semester. The learning principle behind these team exercises is twofold: on the one hand the groups have to cover curricular material and access information related to best parenting practices. On the other hand, by being part of a group themselves, they have to reflect on the challenges that may occur within family units, and this entails meta-cognition. The groups have to collaborate to complete tasks similar to the way families deal with real-life challenges. One of the first tasks concerns parenting techniques in the case of disruptive behavior of children. The groups have to access best parenting practices and resources by accessing sites that list and describe evidence based parenting programs. They have to find best outcomes as a family, and outline the appropriate parenting techniques. It becomes apparent to group members that a family unit has a permanence that has to be accepted, respected, and used a as tool. Not exiting from a group necessitates negotiating skills, display of mutual acceptance and collaboration. The instructor of the class has been trained in the basics of group dynamics, and serves as a resource to guide the students; and can comment on the observed process. Theoretically groups are predicted to go through phases of forming, norming, storming, performing and ultimately adjourning, first described by Tuckman (1965). This sequence is illustrated with descriptions of real-life events occurring in the classroom. When students choose their own groups, the underlying learning principle is to make them responsible for their choices and deal with the unanticipated surprises and challenges. This strategy is intentional. Inevitably, during the semester, cracks appear in these happy units, and students complain that they cannot work in this group, or with that person. When there is dissent in the group, it also provides the perfect learning opportunity. Dynamics of dissent can occur in any group, including family groups. Students are reminded that family groups have permanence and in a similar fashion they cannot change their groups once they have chosen them. Hence the focus shifts to finding techniques and ways of restoring the group homeostasis and thereby implied functioning. In doing so, students are encouraged to follow several steps: one is to understand their group’s behavior according to a systems approach and becoming acquainted with systems theory. Subsequently they need to find ways to resolve the conflict in a respectful manner and become productive. Students realize the parallel between their functioning as a group and many parenting situations. As part of the conflict resolution they need to implement structure in combination with the welcoming qualities of nurture. The student working groups find that just like families, they ultimately have to display constructive coping strategies to support group cohesion and functionality.

The Traditional Sex-Stereotype of a Job as a Moderator Variable for the Directionality of Sex Biases in Performance Evaluation

Bena, Bernard 01 December 1979 (has links)
Accurate and objective performance appraisals are absolutely necessary due to their utility in important personnel decisions such as promotion, demotion and training. This study examines the contaminating effects of sex bias on performance evaluations and it's relationship to the sex-stereotype of the job and levels of performance. Unlike previous studies, this study not only examines these effects at the extremes of performance, but at average levels as well. Also, unlike previous studies, the subjects empirically determined the sex-typed nature of the jobs and the levels of performance within those jobs rather than the experimenter having made a priori decisions. Hypothetical employees in male, neutral, and female sex-typed jobs who performed at high, average, and low levels were rated on four performance dimensions and one overall performance dimension. There were no main effects for either the sex of the rater or the sex of the ratee. There was, however, an interaction between the level of performance and the sex-type of the job that was significant on four of the five dimensions. Possible explanations are developed within an Equity Theory framework for the findings.
