Identifying new technology to improve the effectiveness of IST Otokon's energy management systems / Gerhardus Albertus Combrink.

Combrink, Gerhardus Albertus January 2004 (has links)
1ST Otokon, a Pretoria based company delivering energy management systems to the industrial and utility market segments, has shown steady growth since its inception 15 years ago. However, after ailing financial results, all aspects of the business were interrogated. It was doubted whether its energy management system (EMS) offering, ecWIN, was fulfilling the needs of the industry. Therefore this study was needed to identify new technology which could improve the effectiveness of ecWIN. After doing a thorough literature study on ecWIN, its competitors and the technologies currently utilised, the product was mapped to various technology management models. Deficiencies in the current software development environment were identified, including a lack of manpower and old software development tools. The empirical study entailed determining the effectiveness of the product through a user survey in the form of a questionnaire. Certain problem areas (e.g. insufficient software testing and a lack of documentation on advanced features) were identified by this survey. The numerous complaints about the slowness of certain reports and lack in user-friendliness were also highlighted. Also forming part of the literature and empirical study respectively, were the identification and evaluation of new technologies not yet utilised in the ecWIN sphere. Taking a holistic view of all this information, recommendations were made on how to improve the effectiveness of ecWIN. This was presented in terms of three dimensions: • Upgrade the current infrastructure over the next 12 months, mainly with new software development tools such as Centura Team Developer 2005, Crystal Reports, etc. • Improve the cost-effectiveness of ecWIN during 2006 and 2007, typically by utilising GPRS, MMS, WiFi and BlueTooth to retrieve information from meters. • Utilise a new business model (mainly centred on the cost-effectiveness dimension together with Linux and MySQL) which could allow the company to directly compete with other firms, even in the commercial and residential markets. A fourth dimension, consisting of technologies that should not be considered for integration with ecWIN at this stage, was also identified (e.g. IPv6, XHTML and Visual Studio .NET). In a world with rapidly changing technology, this study should not be a once-off process, but should be undertaken regularly to ascertain that the effectiveness of 1ST Otokon's EMS offering is constantly improved through the identification of new technology. / Thesis (M.B.A.)--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2005.

Can we recreate the ”Bengan Boys” era? : A case study on Athletic Talent Development Environment and psychological needs in young handball players

Dahl, Mattias, Andersson, Viktor January 2015 (has links)
The study’s purpose was to describe a handball ATDE (Athletic Talent Development Environment) in the south of Sweden and to examine and derive the success factors of the ATDE, and within this context explore the motivational climate and autonomy support as perceived by members of the ATDE. The study is based on three theories: the Holistic ecological approach, Self Determination theory and Achievement Goal theory. The study’s participants all represented a club in the south of Sweden and consisted of players in the age of 15-19, the club manager, coaches and parents. The study was conducted through semi-structured interviews, observations and analysis of documents surrounding the club's vision and training/match policies. A total of seven interviews with four players, two coaches and the manager were conducted. Five observations at a minimum of 90 minutes gave the authors a broader view of the ATDE. An analysis of content and a triangulation with the supervisor were conducted in order to interpret the empirical data. The study revealed that the club is under re-organization, and its enthusiasm to evolve and become even better. The study found the ATDE to have a mastery oriented and autonomy supportive climate which in many ways contributed to the successful features of the ATDE. The study confirms earlier research regarding ATDE success factors as well as connections between SDT and AGT. The results also provide a deeper understanding of how successful factors, relationships, motivational climate and the autonomy support in an ATDE, affects young handball player’s motivation to evolve and reach their full potential. Implications with a basis in the theories used are presented.

Therefore, there is a great focus on control and monitoring, which is achieved with the help of the Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) specification. One part of this project was devoted to the implementation of a minimal set of IPMI resources required by the context. On the other hand, the AdvacedTCA standard ends up restricting the access to devices inside of the shelf and thus developments on this scenario are hampered when reconfigurable electronic components are present. The goal of this project then was the conception of a suitable development environment using regular network resources. The Xilinx Virtual Cable (XVC) protocol came across as an appropriate tool to the context and is part of the implemented solution, allowing remote debugging techniques to be used. The final development environment is stable and with reasonable performance, even for connections between different continents, reducing travel expenses and facilitating the creation of shared structures.

The environment, which appears as an extension of RoboEduc software, allows the programming of several programmable robots to be performed using the R-Educ language. We make it possible for the user to program in the language R-Educ and then translate the code to a language previously registered, compiled and then sent or executed by the robot. To develop this work, we conducted a bibliographic research about the main programming languages used in robotics, as well as their definitions and paradigms, from which it was possible to define a set of patterns considered important for the creation of this environment. Then, in the software development phase, we implemented the development environment, bearing in mind the requirements and functionality defined in the design phase. Finally, to validate the platform, we conducted some trials of programming languages and verificate if the complete cycle was satisfied - registration of language, programming in R-Educ, compilation for the registered language, compilation to the machine code and send the code for the robot / Propomos um ambiente de desenvolvimento online multiplataforma configur?vel, desenvolvido especificamente para aplica??es de rob?tica educacional.
