Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree Magister of Education in the Faculty of Education at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology / The core problematique of this study is to establish a collaborative intervention strategy as a model that could facilitate the design and dissemination of appropriate formative feedback during essay-writing practices with at risk ECP and first-year students.

A presente tese representa um esforço no sentido de contextualizar a caminhada do ensaio de interpretação do Brasil, durante o século XIX, com base em três aspectos: a construção do tema nacional, em Varnhagen; a aquisição de uma linguagem de corte subjetivo, em Joaquim Nabuco; e o relacionamento entre ciência e literatura, em Euclides da Cunha. Na introdução, ocorrem aproximações de natureza conceitual acerca das características mais salientes do ensaio como gênero na literatura e da noção de identidade nacional. No primeiro capítulo, os objetivos se transferem para a investigação dos antecedentes da interpretação do Brasil, principalmente aqueles localizados nos textos de não ficção, a exemplo da carta de Pero Vaz Caminha e dos relatos de viagem durante o período colonial. O segundo capítulo descreve os esforços para a criação de uma língua literária correspondente ao novo estatuto de independência política, tendências inventariadas pela prosa e poesia do período, em textos como a História Geral do Brasil, de Francisco Adolfo de Varnhagen. O influxo de uma nova subjetividade sobre a linguagem constitui o escopo do terceiro capítulo que também reproduz parte da fortuna crítica do ensaio O Abolicionismo, de Joaquim Nabuco. Em quarto, o diálogo entre ciências sociais e a interpretação do Brasil servem de contraponto ao levantamento de obras que já aproximam a questão social (o caso de Os Sertões, de Euclides da Cunha). No quinto capítulo, uma breve reconstituição da passagem do ensaio de interpretação do Brasil no século XX. Por último, na coda, a trajetória do ensaio de interpretação do Brasil, até meados de 1900 / This study is focused in the interpretation of Brazil, in the period time of the XIX century, based on three aspects: the building of the nationalist matter, in Varnhagen; the acquisition of subjective language, in Joaquim Nabuco and the relationship between science and literature, in Euclides da cunha. The introduction, presents the conceptual nature about the more visible traces of the essay in the literature e and notion of national identity. In its first chapter, the narrative follow the roots of Brazils interpretation, especially in those non fictional texts like the letter of Pero Vaz Caminha and the journey reports during the colonial period. The second chapter describes the creation of a literary language after the process of political independence. It can be found in written productions such as poetry and novel, but mostly in texts like História Geral do Brasil, by Francisco Adolfo de Varnhagen. The uprise of this new subjectivity in the language concerns the matter of the fourth chapter that also brings the criticism about the essay O Abolicionismo, de Joaquim Nabuco. In the coda, there is a brief reconstitution of Brazils way of interpretation, until near 1900

Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado do Rio de Janeiro / Neste trabalho investigam-se as viagens artísticas como práticas do duplo movimento de atravessar o desconhecido e ser atravessado pelas potências do imprevisível. Identifica-se a experiência viajante como uma forma de ensaio da existência e, na busca por essa compreensão, são estudados quatro movimentos distintos: narrar, atravessar, ser atravessado e bordejar. Trata-se, aqui, de apresentar relações entre a narrativa poética e a experiência viajante através daquilo que esses procedimentos provocam de desestabilizador no sujeito da razão. Busca-se investigar o que poderia haver de próprio no conhecimento do viajante, compreendendo-o como um saber adquirido na passagem pelo incógnito. Faz-se uma digressão pela margem, em uma caminhada ao redor da noção de eixo desconhecido, buscando compreender as potências das obras de arte que se dão como travessia pelo desconhecido e alguns efeitos provocados por essa forma de incursão. Chega-se, por fim, à noção de que a travessia artística implica em uma espécie de desvio, pois ser atravessado pelo incógnito não pode ser sucumbir às potências perigosas do mundo, sendo antes um exercício de bordeja-las, de deslizar por suas margens em um jogo de investidas e recuos no qual a obra de arte é criada / In this work, practices of artistic travel are investigated as the double movement of crossing the unknown and being crossed by the powers of the unpredictable . The travel experience is identified here as a kind of existence essay and, in the search of that comprehension, four distinct movements are studied: narrating, crossing, being crossed and tacking. The relations between poetic narrative and travel experience are presented here with emphasis on the destabilizing potency of these procedures. We seek to investigate what could be the singularity of the traveler knowledge, understanding it as a wisdom acquired on a passage through the incognito. We also study the concept of margin, walking around the notion of unknown axis , seeking to understand some particularities of works of art that are defined as crossings through the unknown and some effects caused by this form of incursion. Finally, we get to the notion that an artistic journey requires a deviation, because being crossed by the incognito is not succumbing to the dangerous powers of the world , but rather an exercise of bordering them, sliding along its borders in a game of onslaughts and retreats in which the artwork is created

Esta dissertação de mestrado põe em questão o morrer, verbo tão elástico que confunde-se com a própria vida. Partindo do pressuposto que o morrer é um processo que cabe aos vivos e, por isso, é atravessado pelas relações do sujeito com a verdade, o seguinte trabalho pretende analisar, a partir do instante presente, como a sociedade moderna ocidental se organizou para dar conta dos infinitos mistérios que a morte desperta nos indivíduos em paralelo com o projeto de governo do Estado de gestão e controle da população, a partir das práticas biopolíticas e da legitimidade do saber médico que prescreve o que é uma vida, quais são os valores que a determinam e sob que códigos e condutas os seres devem se submeter para serem considerados existentes. Aliado ao filósofo Michel Foucault e Giorgio Agamben, propõe-se um percurso sinuoso da emergência do racismo biológico e do racismo de Estado para refletir sobre os grandes genocídios do século XX, sob a perspectiva de uma Tanatopolítica. Através do recurso do ensaio, este trabalho provocará a pergunta: como escrever sobre algo que não se fala O ensaio, mais do que um método, é um artesania capaz de costurar o tempo e a história em busca do passado de nossas verdades presentes e um convite ao leitor a um livre flanar pelos rastros de um conhecimento subsumido das cátedras acadêmicas, mas que clama por sua palavra e seu sepultamento. Ensaiar é permitir, também, que a ficção, a poesia e a literatura entrem pela porta da frente na obstinação do saber. Se a ciência moderna carece de evidências acerca do morrer e seus processos, o ensaio responde, sem ferir os mistérios do mundo, com mais questões que permitem criar outras realidades, fora das instituídas. Junto com Walter Benjamin, Jorge Larrosa, Peter Pal Pelbart e outros filósofos, a dissertação problematiza a distância entre a pesquisa e a militância, flertando com o saber morrer e apostando no luto enquanto luta, ensaiando outras maneiras de dar sentido a ausência com a inventividade política dos movimentos de ocupação atuais para fazer frente ao projeto biopolítico. / This master's dissertation questions dying: a verb so elastic that it is confused with life itself. Based on the assumption that dying is a process that belongs to the living and is therefore crossed by the subject's relations with the truth, the following work intends to analyze, from the present moment, how modern Western society organized itself to address the infinite mysteries that death awakens in the individuals in parallel with the state governor's project of management and control of the population, from the biopolitical practices and the legitimacy of the medical knowledge that prescribes what a life is, what the values that determine it are and under what codes and behaviors living beings must undergo to be considered existing. Allied with the philosophers Michel Foucault and Giorgio Agamben, it is proposed a sinuous route of the emergence of the biological racism and the racism of State to reflect on the great genocides of century XX, from the perspective of Tanatopolitics. This work will provoke the question in the form of an essay: how do we write about something that is not spoken The essay, more than a method, is a craft capable of sewing time and history in search of the past of our present truths and an invitation to the reader to a free walk through the traces of a subsumed knowledge of academic chairs, but that claims by its word and its burial. Essaying is to allow, also, that fiction, poetry, and literature enter the front door in the obstinacy of knowledge. If modern science lacks evidence about dying and its processes, this essay responds, without hurting the mysteries of the world, with more questions that enable us to create other realities, other than those instituted. Along with Walter Benjamin, Jorge Larrosa, Peter Pal Pelbart, and other philosophers, this dissertation problematizes the distance between research and militancy, flirting with the acceptance of dying, and betting on mourning while fighting, essaying other ways to make sense of absence with the political inventiveness of the current occupation movements facing the biopolitical project.

Esta pesquisa tem por objetivo investigar a realização do mecanismo das relações intergenéricas no emprego de marcas proverbiais diferentes formas de apresentação do provérbio na qualidade de gênero do discurso em redações de vestibular, a partir de estudo comparativo do funcionamento discursivo dessas marcas em dois conjuntos de textos, a saber: sessenta redações do vestibular da FUVEST/2006 (tema Trabalho) e sessenta redações do vestibular da FUVEST/2009 (tema Fronteiras), perfazendo o total de 120 textos. Nessas redações, foram reconhecidos os seguintes tipos de registro do provérbio a título de gênero do discurso, por mim denominados marcas proverbiais: (a) construção em que o provérbio aparece integralmente com o uso de aspas e/ou glosa; (b) construção em que o provérbio aparece de forma integral sem o uso de aspas nem de glosa; (c) enunciado organizado a partir da modificação da estrutura de um provérbio; (d) enunciado que alude ao sentido de um provérbio; e (e) construção que reproduz a estrutura de um enunciado proverbial. Sob um olhar enunciativo-discursivo, este trabalho se fundamenta, primordialmente, nos estudos do Círculo de Bakhtin, relacionados à perspectiva dialógica da linguagem e à teoria dos gêneros do discurso; em Maingueneau (1997, 2008b, 2010) em relação às suas considerações sobre as estratégias de captação e de subversão e sobre os aspectos da enunciação proverbial e; em Lysardo-Dias (2004), que compreende o provérbio como um gênero do discurso que se caracteriza pela inserção obrigatória em outro gênero. Os resultados desta pesquisa revelam que o funcionamento discursivo das marcas proverbiais resulta das relações intergenéricas. Esse mecanismo se constata não só pela inserção das marcas proverbiais na redação de vestibular, em que desempenham diversas funções argumentativas, mas também pelo fato de essas marcas apresentarem vestígios de outros gêneros nos quais o provérbio já se instalou. Num caso e no outro, esses vestígios são reconhecíveis tanto no conteúdo temático, quanto na construção composicional e no estilo do gênero. Contrariando a recomendação escolar de evitar o uso de expressões cristalizadas em redações de vestibular, os resultados se apresentam como contribuições para o ensino à medida que: (a) abrem a possibilidade de uma leitura de textos que permite compreendê-los como registros da dinamicidade dos gêneros do discurso; e (b) relativizam aquela recomendação escolar, tendo em vista que a qualidade do texto nem sempre está ligada à ausência de formas cristalizadas. / This research to investigate the mechanism of intergeneric connections, in employment of proverbial brand - different ways of presenting the proverb as a discourse genre - in college entrance essays, from a comparative study of the discursive functioning of these brands into two sets of texts, namely: sixty essays of vestibular FUVEST/2006 (theme Labor) and sixty essays of vestibular FUVEST/2009 (theme Borders), totaling 120 texts. In these essays, were recognized following record types proverb as a discourse genre, for me called proverbial brands: (a) building where the proverb appears entirely with the use of quotation marks and/or gloss, (b) construction in which the proverb appears in full without using quotation marks nor gloss; (c) organized statement from the modification of the structure of a proverb; (d) utterance that alludes to the meaning of a proverb, and (e) construction that reproduces the structure of a proverbial utterance. Under a look enunciative-discursive, this work is based primarily on studies of the Bakhtin Circle, related to the dialogical perspective of language and the theory of speech genres, in Maingueneau (1997, 2008b, 2010) regarding his considerations on strategies for capture and subversion and on aspects of proverbial utterance and, in Lysardo-Dias (2004), who understands the proverb as a genre of discourse that is characterized by mandatory insertion into another genre. The results of this research reveal that the discursive functioning of proverbial brands results from the intergeneric connections. This mechanism turns out not only by the insertion of proverbial brands in writing entrance exam, where they play several argumentative functions, but also because these brands show traces of other genres in which the proverb has already been installed. In one case and in the other, these traces are recognizable both in thematic content, as in the compositional construction and the style of the genre. Contrary to the recommendation of school to avoid using expressions crystallized in college entrance essays, the results are presented as contributions to teaching as: (a) open the possibility of a reading of texts that allows to understand them as records of dynamicity of discourse genres; and (b) relativize that academic recommendation given that the text quality is not always linked to the absence of crystallized forms.

O intuito era apreender uma continuidade de possibilidades semânticas da fábula, delineadas pelas disposições políticas, estéticas e lingüísticas do exercício teórico-crítico de Calvino ao longo de uma década, sem permanecer, no entanto, distante de sua ficção, notadamente dos dois livros desse período fundamentais ao problema da pesquisa: A trilha dos ninhos de aranha e Fábulas italianas. Assim, três significações de fábula foram aqui construídas, relacionando-a ao diálogo do escritor com a crítica e a validação de um estilo literário, à busca por um modelo narrativo adequado às necessidades do protagonista em um mundo em guerra e às preocupações com a fisionomia moral do papel do escritor na modernidade / Abstract: Stimulated by the frequent relation between Italo Calvino¿s fictional texts and the fable, as well as by the meaningful but also classificatory and non-organic critical field then created, this research intended to replace the fable issue into the initial period of Calvino¿s trajectory (1945-1956), in the middle of his hundreds of essays, letters, prefaces and introductions, mainly of those non-fictional texts from his books Saggi 1945-1985 and Lettere 1940-1985. The intention was to understand a continuity of semantic possibilities for the fable, demarcated by political, aesthetical and linguistic dispositions of Calvino¿s theoretical-critical practice through a decade, not keeping, however, the distance from his fiction, specially his two essential books from this period to the research: The path to the nest of spiders and Italian fables. Com o intuito de promover a reflexão sobre a construção do livro de autor e sobre os processos de edição da produção artística em suas finalidades específicas, o resultado previsto foi a criação de um livro e a realização de uma exposição. / Originally titled as \"Portraits of the Serra da Canastra\", the research looked to do a photographic essay. Aiming to promote reflection on the construction of an artist\'s book and about edition processes of artistic production in their specific purposes, the expected result was the creation of a book and perform an exhibition.

In this essay a novel by the Japanese author Haruki Murakami, The Wind-up Bird Chronicle, is examined through dreams as a psychoanalytical phenomenon or spectacle. The novel is a complex work but mainly circles around the main character Toru, a middle-aged man in modern Japan whose wife leaves him unexpectedly. The focus in this essay is on the dream symbols in this novel and how they have a narrative function, i.e., how the symbols can be tied to the main character Toru’s real life problems, more specifically, his problems with femininity. The psychoanalytical approaches used in this essay are Sigmund Freud’s and C G Jung’s theories on dreams. Material from another novel by Murakami, Norwegian Wood, which contains the same type of symbolic imagery as The Wind-up Bird, is also included.

HUNGER: ESSAYS is a collection of lyric essays that present the coming-of-age story of a young woman growing up in a Panamanian family where identity is defined by patriarchal notions of femininity (e.g., physical appearances) and economically-oriented career aspirations. In an attempt to fit into this family rather than explore her difference, the narrator undergoes psychological trauma that results in anorexia during her young adulthood. As she works towards healing, the narrator grapples with Western dichotomies of body and mind in an effort to become a more integrated self.
