Ultra Low Frequency Waves and their Association with Magnetic Substorms and Expansion Phase OnsetMurphy, Kyle R. 11 1900 (has links)
This thesis concerns the study of Ultra Low Frequency (ULF) waves during magnetospheric substorms. A wavelet algorithm which characterises magnetic ULF waves during substorm onset is presented. The algorithm is validated by comparing the spatial and temporal location of ULF wave onset to space-based observations of the aurora. It is demonstrated that the onset of ULF wave power expands coherently away from an ionospheric epicentre during the substorm expansion phase.
Further, a case study of the time-domain causality of magnetotail plasma flows and ULF wave Pi2 pulsations is presented. Although highly correlated, it is demonstrated that the plasma flows cannot directly drive the ground magnetic waveforms but may be indirectly linked via a common source.
Finally, results from a statistical study of ULF wave power during onset are presented. It is concluded that there is no statistical difference between historical sub-classifications of ULF waves observed during substorms.

On Gibbsianness of infinite-dimensional diffusionsDereudre, David, Roelly, Sylvie January 2004 (has links)
We analyse different Gibbsian properties of interactive Brownian diffusions X indexed by the lattice $Z^{d} : X = (X_{i}(t), i ∈ Z^{d}, t ∈ [0, T], 0 < T < +∞)$. In a first part, these processes are characterized as Gibbs states on path spaces of the form $C([0, T],R)Z^{d}$. In a second part, we study the Gibbsian character on $R^{Z}^{d}$ of $v^{t}$, the law at time t of the infinite-dimensional diffusion X(t), when the initial law $v = v^{0}$ is Gibbsian.

Entrepreneurial Expansion : Swedish staffing companies entering the market in Oslo, NorwayEdler, Jonatan, Andersson, Tomas, Bergqvist, Eric January 2010 (has links)
Purpose Our purpose is to develop a model, based on theoretical framework regarding expansion strategies and cultural differences and see if it can explain the establishment of Swedish staffing companies in Oslo, Norway. Theoretical Framework The theoretical framework presents theories within the field of cultural and social beha-vior, internationalization in general and two different approaches of international expan-sion. Each theory is explained and referred to entrepreneurial expansion. Method This study has been based on three Swedish staffing companies and their expansion to Oslo, Norway. The research done has been both quantitative with surveys and qualita-tive with semi-structured interviews. Findings According to the study, reasons to expand to Oslo for a Swedish staffing company are mainly due to the cultural similarities and the lucrative possibilities within the market. Expansion is preferable done with an incremental approach in line with the Uppsala model. Furthermore, no major barriers exist. The models of International New Venture and Born Globals are not applicable, while the theory of Hofstede is partially supported. Scott‟s theory is unworkable to consider due to lack of differences, while the intervie-wees support the theory of Rundh in terms of internationalization. It is the belief of the authors that their own model, supported by the empirical findings, also can be used by other companies, acting in other industries, in order to get a comprehensive overview of the factors that should be taken into account before going international. One should though keep in mind, that the cultural differences normally are bigger than in the case with Sweden and Norway.

Melin, Maria, Nilsson, Catarina January 2007 (has links)

On the construction of point processes in statistical mechanicsNehring, Benjamin, Poghosyan, Suren, Zessin, Hans January 2013 (has links)
By means of the cluster expansion method we show that a recent result of Poghosyan and Ueltschi (2009) combined with a result of Nehring (2012) yields a construction of point processes of classical statistical mechanics as well as processes related to the Ginibre Bose gas of Brownian loops and to the dissolution in R^d of Ginibre's Fermi-Dirac gas of such loops. The latter will be identified as a Gibbs perturbation of the ideal Fermi gas. On generalizing these considerations we will obtain the existence of a large class of Gibbs perturbations of the so-called KMM-processes as they were introduced by Nehring (2012). Moreover, it is shown that certain "limiting Gibbs processes" are Gibbs in the sense of Dobrushin, Lanford and Ruelle if the underlying potential is positive. And finally, Gibbs modifications of infinitely divisible point processes are shown to solve a new integration by parts formula if the underlying potential is positive.

Consumer health benefits through agricultural biotechnology : an economic examination of obstacles to commercial introductionNewton, Jason Robert 04 July 2005
The first generation of agricultural crops developed using biotechnology have offered the primary producers of the crops agronomic benefits. Some consumers have resisted accepting this technology because of concerns with food and environmental safety, and ethical issues that arise from the processes that are involved in developing these products. The second and third generation of agricultural biotechnology are being developed to offer products with direct benefits to consumers. The focus of this thesis is the second generation, which have added health benefits. Specifically, the obstacles to commercialization of functional foods derived through biotechnology are examined.
The three factors which have the potential to set back commercial introduction of functional foods derived through biotechnology are government regulatory uncertainty, consumer aversion and brand risk, and gaining access to intellectual property. The regulations governing functional foods are examined to show the regulatory ambiguity that exists in Canada. Comparisons are drawn to other nations. Literature that focuses on consumer aversion to agricultural biotechnology is reviewed, along with consumer preference studies with regards to genetically modified (GM) foods with and without health benefits. Transaction cost economics literature is used to analyse the problems related to gaining access to intellectual property and the resulting supply chain implications.
Three separate theoretical models are developed to examine each of the three factors separately. Government regulatory uncertainty is incorporated into an expected profit model to show the effects of increased uncertainty on the expected profit from a new technology. A heterogeneous consumer preference model is used to show the effects of changing consumer preferences on the market share of the firm introducing the GM functional food to the market. Simulation analysis using this model shows the effects of changing variables on the market shares of three products in the market. Finally a stylized model of the vertical market shows the effects of increased transaction costs incurred in gaining access to intellectual property on the rent that is available for distribution throughout the supply chain.
The results show that these factors could be an obstacle to commercial development of functional foods derived through biotechnology. When the three factors are combined, the rent available for distribution is important for the success of the supply chain. Multiple bilateral monopoly negotiations cause this rent to be less than optimal. Increased levels of government regulatory uncertainty, consumer aversion and brand risk, and costs gaining of access to intellectual property decrease the expected rent available for distribution. This could be a problem facing developers of functional foods derived through biotechnology.
