The Factories of Men? : A study of Hamas’ statements and politics concerning women within a theoretical framework of Islamic feminism

This study examines Hamas’ policies and opinions on women’s rights and participation in the public sphere from a perspective of Islamic feminism. A theoretical framework of Islamic feminism is developed in this thesis and can be applied to other Islamist organisations and parties. The study shows that Hamas’ policies and statements on the topic of women’s rights and political participation have changed from not qualifying as feminist at all to showing tendencies of an Islamic feminism in line with the Legalist model presented. This is partly due to the democratic elements of Hamas, which points towards that this might be a possible future for other Islamist parties which have gained power democratically, such as from the Arab spring.

So agricultures styles based on principles of agroecology gain visibility to seek the preservation of biodiversity, enhancement of more horizontal relations between "human-nature" and between them, ensuring the sovereignty and food security and local sustainability. Therefore, this study aims to understand the action of women in the management of activities in the backyards of the Community Bom Jesus, Maceio rural settlement, Itapipoca-CE. We used method with a critical feminist approach in conjunction with the peasantry elements. Methods, we chose to case study associated with participant observation techniques and interviews. The instruments were field diary, semi-structured script, camera and recorder. The results indicate that women in the practice of peasant agriculture developed in the yards has been mainly responsible for the preservation of biodiversity, management and varied techniques, crops associated with small livestock, the extraction and processing of food for family consumption and for playback. Backyards practiced since the dawn of agriculture constitute one way and know-how of women in agriculture that are indicating elements (ecological, social, economic and cultural) important to agroecology, such as biodiversity conservation, multiple handlings food production without pesticides and without fertilizers. The actual dialogue of women with the principles of agroecology, experienced in the yard, are improvers of new meanings to society. / Novas perspectivas em relação ao mundo rural e à agricultura tem ganhado destaque diante das crises (energética, alimentar, ambiental, econômica e entre outras) provocadas pela expansão da lógica do capital. Assim, estilos de agriculturas fundamentados em princípios da agroecologia ganham visibilidade por buscar a preservação da biodiversidade, a valorização de relações mais horizontais entre “humanos-natureza” e entre estes, a garantia da soberania e segurança alimentar e a sustentabilidade local. Portanto, este estudo objetiva compreender a ação das mulheres no contexto da gestão das atividades realizadas nos quintais da Comunidade Bom Jesus, Assentamento Maceió, Itapipoca-CE. Utilizou-se com método uma abordagem crítica feminista em articulação com elementos do campesinato. Dos métodos, optou-se por estudo de caso associado a técnicas de observação participante e entrevistas. Os instrumentos utilizados foram diário de campo, roteiro semi-estruturado, câmera fotográfica e gravador. Os resultados indicam que as mulheres na prática de agricultura camponesa desenvolvida nos quintais tem sido as principais responsáveis pela preservação da biodiversidade, manejo e técnicas variadas, de cultivos associados à criação de pequenos animais, ao extrativismo e à transformação de alimentos para consumo da família e para sua reprodução. Os quintais praticados desde o surgimento da agricultura constituem-se de um modo e de um saber-fazer das mulheres na agricultura que estão a indicar elementos (ecológico, social, econômico e cultural) importantes à agroecológica, como a preservação da biodiversidade, manejos múltiplos, produção de alimentos sem uso de agrotóxicos e sem fertilizantes químicos. O diálogo real das mulheres com os princípios da Agroecologia, experimentados no quintal, são potencializadores de novos significados para a sociedade.

The goddess, the witch and the bitch : three studies in the perception of women

In the minds of many people all over the world, women are ‘second class citizens’, standing accused of the downfall of mankind ever since Eve allegedly ate the apple. Even amongst those who do not openly denigrate women, there are many who do so in other, more subtle ways even if they are unaware of it. This study proposes to challenge such a view of women by exposing the ways in which perceptions of women are constructed by society, which frequently wants to maintain the status quo of male dominance. This study employs a feminist approach in examining this gynocentric theme, along with cultural studies which, with its focus on power relations and ways of decentring power structures, is also clearly of use. In addition, this multidisciplinary approach of cultural studies offers the possibility of studying literary texts as well as popular culture. Three specific time periods are examined, with a view to uncovering negative perceptions of women and ways that women can resist such attempts to control them. In chapter one, the focus turns to contemporary perceptions of prehistoric women and the ways that so-called ‘objective’ science has failed to represent women accurately. Similarly, ‘objective’ accounts of Goddess-worship – which frequently fail to examine this phenomenon adequately – are revisited. Alice Walker’s The Temple of My Familiar (1989) is discussed as a text which acts as a site of resistance to societally-informed perceptions. Chapter two continues this investigation by turning to the concept of the witch and its maligned association with women. Woman and witchcraft, having been associated for centuries, are investigated as a pairing which frequently results because iii of attempts to control women by androcentric society. In such situations, the practising of witchcraft can actually become a form of resistance to patriarchy. The pernicious effect of society’s need to purge itself – by witch hunts – of witches is also investigated. The Devil’s Chimney (1997) by Anne Landsman and “The prophetess” (1994) by Njabulo S. Ndebele are discussed as texts which examine fictionalised South African versions of this phenomenon. Sinead O’Connor, the Irish singer, is the ‘bitch’ discussed in chapter three. She is examined as a woman who offers strong and on-going resistance to patriarchal ways of thinking which would ‘box’ women in. This singer refuses to accept societal roles which are offered to women and so offers means of resistance to patriarchy, many of which are discussed in this chapter. This study concludes that it is the responsibility of women to resist patriarchy and to define roles for themselves. The three chapters examine various means of resistance and offer women insight into the forms of opposition they themselves can take.

GENDER-CRITICAL/ GENDERLESS? A CRITICAL DISCOURSE ANALYSIS OF TRANS-EXCLUSIONARY RADICAL FEMINISM (TERF) IN FEMINIST CURRENT

Feminist Current is a multi-author Canadian self-proclaimed feminist website which frequently publishes trans-exclusionary radical feminist (TERF) discourse via blogs, podcasts, and global news. This project is a critical discourse analysis of the ways in which Feminist Current communicatively constructs and deconstructs transgender identity in problematic and exclusionary ways. In this study, I consider significant definitions given through Feminist Current, entertain the question of whether TERF is a slur, and discuss the major themes. Based on twenty-three sampled essays published on Feminist Current, I find that Feminist Current authors use five major themes in their discourse: violence against women, strategic censorship, antimanipulation and pro-bodily autonomy, performances of humor and naivete, and calls for solidarity. This discourse functions to separate transwomen from women’s spaces and position transwomen as illegitimate and aggressive, while simultaneously repositioning radical feminism as a superior ideological framing.

This essay explores how, for many minoritized peoples, cyborg ontology is experienced as dehumanizing rather than posthumanizing. Rereading Haraway’s Cyborg Manifesto through a decolonial, transfeminist lens, it explores the implications of Haraway’s assertion that cyborg subjectivity is the “illegitimate offspring of militarism and patriarchal capitalism” by examining the modern/colonial development and deployment of microprosthetic hormonal technologies–so often heralded as one of the technologies ushering in a queer, posthuman, post-gender future–as mechanisms of gendered and racialized subjective control operative at the level of the biomolecular.

Thesis advisor: Martin Summers / The second wave feminist media, defined as ideological contributions via the written word, played an essential role in the second wave by sharing radical ideologies and bringing women into a feminist consciousness. This study examines the herstory of three groups in Boston at the time: the Second Wave magazine (1971-1983), the Combahee River Collective (1974-1980), and Persephone Press (1976-1983). Each group had different motivations yet remained dedicated to the radical feminist media and various methods of societal upheaval. As a radical feminist magazine, a black feminist organization, and lesbian-feminist publishing house respectively, the women behind the three entities aspired to alter the face of second wave feminism. Each had several commonalities: including a commitment to the feminist media, factionalism and ideological strife, difficulties in balancing beliefs with harsh systemic realities, and a great connection to coalitions and the greater feminism community.
