Impact of Financial Inclusion on Entrepreneurship : The Case of South Africa

Bricknell, Amy, Kertay, Panna January 2024 (has links)
This study investigates the influence of increased financial inclusion on entrepreneurship in South Africa, employing an interpretivist approach. It uses qualitative research on the personal experiences of consumers and entrepreneurs to establish the direct benefits and barriers of these changes. The research explores the experiences and perspectives of entrepreneurs regarding access to financial services, the role of financial inclusion in entrepreneurial growth, the impact of technology on financial inclusion, financial literacy, and awareness, as well as recommendations for policy and practice. Findings reveal that while there has been progress in enhancing financial access, challenges such as high bank charges, stringent documentation requirements, and limited financial literacy remain a problem, particularly among underserved populations. However, increased access to financial services has facilitated entrepreneurial activities, with entrepreneurs leveraging innovations like mobile banking and online payment systems. Policy implications suggest the need for targeted interventions to address barriers to financial inclusion and promote entrepreneurship, including simplifying banking processes, expanding financial literacy programs, and improving access to financing for new entrepreneurs and small businesses.  The findings offer valuable insights for economic agents, including consumers, financial firms, and policymakers, into fostering a more inclusive financial ecosystem that promotes entrepreneurial development and economic growth.

Gamifying Finance : A Quantitative Study on Consumer Attitudes and Acceptance of Gamification Within Swedish Financial Services

wiklander, Feliks, Rustom, Obada January 2024 (has links)
The rapid evolution of technology in the modern society have changed the preferences and customer needs in all markets. Industries have over the years moved further towards a more digitalized environment. This fact makes it necessary to study the changes of consumer needsfor companies to successfully convert their business models to fit into a modern era. Financial services are a great example of an industry that have moved from traditional to digital methods and an industry that society depends. Gamification is a growing marketing and learning tool that has been proven effective when it comes to increasing engagement, behaviour and literacythrough the use of game-like elements such as point systems, rewards and leaderboards. This study’s purpose is to expand on previous research to determine the preferences and customer needs that allows for gamification to be a successful tool to engage customers in Swedish financial services. This purpose of the study resulted in the following research question: “What factors influence consumer attitudes towards and acceptance of gamification solutions within the Swedish financial services?” To answers the research question previous research on Self-determination theory, flow theory and social cognitive theory regarding psychological and personal needs were used to reach 9reliable and measurable factors. A questionnaire was sent out with questions measuring these factors as well as four questions serving as dependent variables as a measure of how gamification increases engagement, brand loyalty, financial literacy and attitudes. A total of 97 responses were collected and analysed through multiple regressions to find the effects the factors had on the four dependent variables. The result of this study shows that psychological and personal factors such as Innovativeness, need for uniqueness, Competence, Relatedness, Goals & Feedback, Challenge and Outcome expectations have a significant positive effective influencing consumers attitudes and acceptance of gamified solutions within Swedish financial services. Factors such as autonomyand Observational learning & Self-efficacy were also found significant on their own towards the measured variables but found that in combination with other factors to not be of statistically significance.

Consumer debt level of the Department of Health public servants in Mahikeng

Moaisi, Lesolobe Patrick 08 May 2014 (has links)
Studies as described in the literature review indicate that most South Africans are highly in debt. The South African Reserve Bank’s quarterly bulletin is one of the prominent barometers for measuring household debt in the country and over the last five years has been indicating a steady decline but still very high household debt among South Africans. Studies have also shown that this relates to poor financial literacy and consumer ignorance in applying basic financial management practices. This is discussed in Chapter two of the study. The aim of the study was to determine the consumer debt level of the Department of Health public servants in Mahikeng, North West Province. This study used a consumer survey to measure consumer indebtedness among public servants in Mahikeng. The results of the study support literature in that the study found that most public servants are indebted. The findings also showed that 63% of the public servants spent more than 20% of their income in servicing debt. Thirteen per cent of the public servants taking part in the study had been served with either garnishee or emolument orders. The results of the study seem to suggest that public servants working for the Department of Health in Mahikeng and taking part in the study were indebted. / Business Management / M. Com. Výuka finanční gramotnosti na základní škole / Educating about financial literacy at primary schools

Šrumová, Lenka January 2017 (has links)
This master's thesis focuses on the teaching of financial literacy at lower secondary schools in the Czech Republic. The main goal was to characterize and evaluate a selection of internet based programs that specialize in financial literacy in order to gain insight on how the users view the issue at hand and how they interact with these programs. The thesis employs a qualitative research method. The first section is devoted to the theoretical introduction to finance, its definition, characteristics and the components of financial literacy. A special focus was also put on the development of financial literacy in the Czech Republic and the main documents in which it is grounded. The need for implementation of financial literacy into secondary schools' curriculums was based on surveys about the level of financial literacy among students and public. The practical part of this thesis consists of two closely interrelated sections. Firstly, it outlines and examines three different online programs created to help teachers design their financial literacy courses more effectively. Secondly, the thesis presents a methodological research using structured interviews with open questions and concludes by demonstrating the results. Even considering the characteristics of each country, several common points have been identified in order to explain people???s financial behavior. In Brazil, the theme ???financial behavior and education??? increases significantly, because the improvement of population living conditions in the last years brought a significant number of people to market, and, in this scenario, a look at young adults is very important as long as this population range begins to engage in financial decisions, such as purchasing a vehicle, a real state property or starting a financial reserve for emergencies. To understand the financial behavior of these young people, this research makes a replication of De Bassa Scheresberg (2013). The work seeks to explain how social economics profiles and financial knowledge are related to young people???s behavior in decisions about loans, formation of financial reservations and retirement planning. Some findings of this study, accomplished through a research with 419 young people from six universities of the city of S??o Paulo, were similar to the object of the replication and to other studies, while other findings were not. This research concludes, in the same way as De Bassa Sheresberg (2013), that income and education are important predictors of financial education. It also concludes the variable ???educational institutional rating??? is a strong predictor of knowledge and financial behavior of young people. No. of bitstreams: 1 Ricardo Antonio de Souza.pdf: 1542597 bytes, checksum: f061f50caaad575d2edaa18c72092440 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2018-09-28 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / In recent years, we have noticed a large increase in the number of families in Brazil, thinking about how to contribute to the improvement of this situation, we decided to develop this research, which seeks to verify if financial mathematics, when developed by mathematical modeling as a teaching and learning strategy, can contribute to the development of students' financial behavior in a higher technology course in logistics and computer science. In the present research, we hypothesize that when financial mathematics is developed using this strategy, there is a positive influence on the understanding of the content worked and, consequently, influences the financial behavior of the subject. In order to validate our hypothesis, we use the modeling processes, which brings the student closer to the real scientific activity, that is, the student becomes a researcher, testing conjectures, formulating hypotheses, proving, constructing models, concepts, theories and socializing the results. According to this strategy, it is up to the teacher to provide favorable situations, so that the student in this effective action on knowledge, transform it into knowledge in this process of scientific search. Recent research shows that students who have already completed the discipline of financial mathematics in an undergraduate course usually do not use or associate the studied content with their financial life, so we try to answer the following research question: The use of mathematical modeling as a strategy for teaching and learning Financial Mathematics, could contribute to the development of Financial Education ?. As well as the following specific questions: What evidence of financial literacy can be identified after a training on Financial Mathematics centered on the modeling approach? What contributions of mathematical modeling can be identified for the construction of financial literacy? To answer them, we created a questionnaire to be applied to students of two technology courses of a public institution of higher education, located in the great ABC - SP. Being the first, technology in logistics and the second in computing. The students of the first course answered the questionnaire after attending a financial mathematics workshop, structured by mathematical modeling. In order to have a comparative parameter of answers, we apply the same questionnaire to students of the second course, but these without participating in the workshop of financial mathematics.
