The aim of this research is to investigate how people with non-fluent aphasia construct and negociate identities in face-to-face interactions. Non-fluent aphasia is a symptom of a cerebral damage displayed by difficulties in producing talk. Through the use of concepts derived from Conversational Analysis and Interactional Sociolinguistics, it is observed how issues related to linguistic deficit become relevant in talk-in-interaction in conversations among persons with and without non-fluent aphasia. The corpus is composed of approximately fifteen hours of video and audio recordings of face-to-face interactions. Thirty two representative segments in which participants engage in construction of identities were selected. The generated data provide evidence that challenges to identity may be seen as the consequence of the “unsettled lives” produced by aphasia. This case study showed that it is not all people with aphasia who project the sick person identity that society makes available for them, principally if we consider the fact that identities can be projected/sustained in a private or public space, that is, in relationships/activities into and/or outside familiar context. Another relevant distinction in this study is concerned with the fact that we look for the language in use making intervening with not only the linguistic competence, but also, with the communicative competence. In this way, the results of analysis show that despite linguistic deficit, persons with aphasia can take part, socially, in the conversations with people without aphasia if both show themselves oriented and perceive the relevance of paralinguistics or non-linguistics resources to the discourse and social identities projection and negociation into interaction in progress.

Srovnání "hedging" (atenuace) v politickém diskurzu britské a australské angličtiny / A comparison of political hedging in British and Australian political discourse

Nevrkla, Lukáš January 2016 (has links)
The thesis analyses the pragmatic aspects of the language of political discourse in the particular context of the institute of parliamentary question time. The thesis examines and compares the use of hedging in the context of other communication management strategies (e.g., evasion, reformulation, dodging a footing shift) in the British House of Commons and in the Australian House of Representatives. In addition, the thesis seeks to test the methodological approaches and verify the conclusions reached in previous research, especially by Alan Partington (2003) and Bruce Fraser (2010). [en] SEMANTIC WEB INTEROPERABILITY: ONE STRATEGY FOR THE TAXONOMIC ONTOLOGY ALIGNMENT / [pt] INTEROPERABILIDADE SEMÂNTICA NA WEB: UMA ESTRATÉGIA PARA O ALINHAMENTO TAXONÔMICO DE ONTOLOGIAS

CAROLINA HOWARD FELICISSIMO 07 January 2005 (has links)
[en] With the Web evolving towards a Semantic Web, it is believed that the available information will be presented in a meaningful way to allow machines to automatically process its content. Besides the individual processing, a better information exchange among Web applications is desired. For this purpose, mechanisms are called for guarantee the semantic interoperability, that is, the identification and compatibility of information. In this direction, ontologies are used as one resource to make available a structured vocabulary, free of ambiguities. Ontologies provide a well-defined standard to structure the information and to promote formalism for automatic processing. In this work, we propose one strategy for ontology interoperability. The Ontology Taxonomic Alignment Component - CATO, which is the result of the implementation of this proposed strategy, provides an automatic taxonomic ontologies alignment. In this way, the alignment is obtained by a three-step process. The first step is the lexical comparison between the concepts from the entries ontologies. It uses a trimming mechanism of the related associated concepts as a stop condition. The second step is the structural comparison of the ontologies structures used to identify the similarities between common sub-trees. The third step refines the results of the previous step, classifying the similar identified concepts as very similar or little similar, according to a pre-defined similarity measurement.
