Mechanisms that perpetuate health disparities: physician stereotypes & bias

Ibaraki, Alicia 10 April 2018 (has links)
Purpose: Although Asian Americans are the only racial group for whom cancer is the leading cause of death, colorectal cancer screening is consistently lower than that of White Americans. Physicians also recommend colorectal cancer screening to Asian Americans at nearly half the rate as White Americans. This study tests a mechanism that may underlie low recommendation rates. I based my hypothesis on a conceptual model that integrates the literature on information processing and decision making with Asian American stereotypes. Methods: I conducted an online study of primary care physicians and measured their cancer screening referral behavior in response to clinical vignettes. I used the existing Asian Attitude Implicit Association Test (IAT) and developed a new Health Attitude IAT to measure implicit attitudes about Asian American foreignness and health advantages, respectively. Explicit attitudes about these constructs were also assessed through self-report. I used binary logistic regression models to evaluate the association of attitudes about Asian Americans foreignness and health advantage with screening recommendation. Results: My sample included 167 physicians (23% response rate). I found strong implicit bias that Asians are foreign (Cohen’s d = 1.09) and strong implicit bias favoring a white health advantage (Cohen’s d = -0.86). There were weaker explicit biases that Asians are foreign (Cohen’s d = 0.62). Explicit beliefs about health advantage favored Asians (Cohen’s d = 0.73). Physician race, age and gender were significant moderators of bias score. .I found no evidence of a race based screening disparity and no association between implicit or explicit bias scores and making a cancer screening recommendation. Conclusions: Foreign and health advantage biases exist among a sample of physicians, but may not influence cancer screening recommendation behavior. Physicians demonstrated both implicitly and explicitly held attitudes that Asian Americans are perpetual foreigners. Physicians also reported explicit beliefs that Asian Americans have health advantages relative to other races. Implicitly, their attitudes indicated that White Americans are a healthier group. Further research should address whether race-based cancer screening disparities persist in real world settings, both in terms of screening completion, and physician recommendation. If disparities still exist, alternate explanatory mechanisms should be identified.

Narušení zákonnosti ČR cizinci - migrační vlna velkého rozsahu / Law breaking by foreigners in Czech republic - the migration flow of large extent.

ŠKOLKA, Michael January 2012 (has links)
In 2004, the ČR joined the European Union and in 2007 joined the Schengen area. These two historic moments were the reason for creation of legislative changes, which mainly relates to the protection of external borders of the state, public order in the ČR and the introduction of various laws and directives governing the movement of goods, among other things and stay of foreigners in the ČR. Part of the strategy to ensure public order in the Republic is among other type plan "large-scale migration wave." It is important to note that the accession to the Schengen area was to abolish national border crossings and it is now possible the free movementofpersons, includingforeigners. ČR has become a country that has the inner land borders and outer boundaries is only at international airports. Although this fact has brought for the citizens of ČRfor example great ease when traveling, but there is a large open space for international crimes, which are undoubtedly related to illegal migration and smuggling, human trafficking, narcotics and weapons. Based on the above fact, the conclusion is sufficiently justified that type plan ?wave of large-scale migration? currently has its real foundation and there is a risk that the migration wave of foreigners can come to the ČR. This assumption is supported by research of migratory flows to Europe and to the ČR, it is also influenced by the unstable political situation in African and Asian countries. This plan type governs the procedures and schedule the activities of government ministries, regional authorities and municipalities. Many tasks are performed by the Ministry of Interior, particularly the Department of Asylum and Migration Policy, and police components, particularly the Alien Police Service is currently the Foreign Police Departments included in the structure of the Regional Directorate of Police. There has been a major reorganization from 1. 1. 2011, whose components fulfill the tasks of this type plan. Until now hasn´t been established police departments that would assume the tasks after the Alien Police Service, and therefore will be created the draft update of this plan on my part.

Integrace dětí ze zahraničí v českém školském systému / Integration of children from abroad in the Czech education system

TOMÁŠKOVÁ, Zdeňka January 2012 (has links)
The topic of the thesis is ?Integration of foreign children into the Czech educational system?. The theoretic part is focused mainly on clarification of the terms integration and foreigner. Then it is focused on describing the educational system of the countries the respondents come from ? i.e. the Czech Republic, Ukraine, Vietnam and Russia. The objective of the thesis is to find out how were the foreign children prepared for the education and how successfully they were integrated and accepted into the school group. For the realization of the objective I chose the qualitative research technique, interview and observation. The respondents were five children from elementary schools in the South Bohemian Region. Collecting of the data took place between December 2011 and March 2012. Getting the respondents was very difficult because most of the families don't consider themselves as foreigners but Czechs. Another reason was the fear of going public. The respondents were children who came to the Czech Republic from Ukraine, Vietnam and Russia. The observation of the children from Russia wasn't done because their teachers refused it (they didn't give the reason why). The chapter called ?Výsledky? (Results) contains case studies which present the information from the interviews and observation. They contain the results of the matter of integration of these children to the group of the Czech children, their acceptance and activities. The thesis can be used for a further quantitative research. It can also help to the public in getting the information about this topic and preventing potential problems.

Vliv reprezentantů ČR v basketbalu mužů na herní výkon jejich mateřského družstva / The influence of Representatives of the Czech Republic men's basketball at gaming performance from their parent team

PIXA, Zdeněk January 2014 (has links)
Men's basketball league season from 1998 to 1999 to the present, much has renewed all the monitored indicators - the number of players, minutes played, the points scored and the coefficient of usefulness. The main part is played by the increased interest in the engaging foreign nationals in the Czech teams. Their representation in the NBL increased since 1998/99 from 7.6% to 41.8% in 2008/09. Influence of this growth is there less participation of Czech players younger than 20 years of course and the high fall of the Czechs above 20 years. If you complete the top ten, twenty and thirty of the best players in NBL we´ll have always of predominance by foreigners. But they could be represented only those players with Czech nationality. Question referred to the project is how these best Czech players will stand in the future. The goal is to determine how the ten most representative of players for the last 3-5 seasons affects the game performance in the parent team. The basic method of the investigation will be analyze statistics of the game (technical register) - gaming performance of the individual player representatives (eg in relation to the results of the team, its composition, etc.). The research sample will be composed by the selection of the men's NBL teams, 10 representatives of the Czech Republic, always two to one of the player post. Authenticated facts gathered from the implementation of the project will be provided to the experts through the periodicals.

After the serious violations during the Second World War and the importance acquired by the International Law of Human Rights, values as dignity, justice and equality are enshrined in the legal system and its respect required beyond the boundaries of any country. The creation of an international community, which is governed by rules that its members are subordinated, without distinction, as well as state - based on volunteerism, become inspired by one principled nature of these new concepts required of Global Society, as well as the adoption, influenced by neoconstitutionalism, to the model of State Constitutional rule of law, are opposed to the idea of state sovereignty connected to a superiority, absolute and unlimited power which recognizes no other above it, not even the basic principles or axioms that must govern the relationships internally. So looks for a concept of state that includes all the requirements of a democratic society, that have the people as the power holder, understanding that state element has undergone a relativization, because had to adapt to the contemporary values applicable to the individual, inserting in its concept, the indispensable obligation to protect the inalienable rights of citizens, regardless of with whom he have legal and political bond of nationality. It happens that, to consecrate these privileges to individuals, which, because they contain reference to values with supranational characteristics, are very abstract and are in constant collision course with internal rules, making it difficult to reconcile, it will use hermeneutics of human rights, due mainly to international courts, correlated with constitutional exegesis, in particular, legal principiologia, using, among others, the principles of reasonableness and proportionality, the systematic interpretation of the Constitution and international legal standards. Thus, it seek to enshrine the common foundation of all law , the link between the systems, namely, the dignity of human beings. Finally, it will see if Brazilian jurisdiction, through case studies, is tuned in line with these new paradigms, and in line with the International Bill of Human Rights, the Federal Constitution, the values and principles she hired / O presente trabalho se prop?e a rever conceitos tradicionais inerentes ? teoria geral do Estado e dos direitos humanos, atinentes ? situa??o jur?dica do estrangeiro, entendido este como sujeito de direitos, especialmente quando da imposi??o legal de sua sa?da compuls?ria do territ?rio nacional.

Role sestry při poskytování péče pacientům - cizincům / Nurse´s role in providing care to patients - foreigners

KOUSALOVÁ, Renata January 2011 (has links)
The theme of this thesis is the role of nurse providing care for patients-foreigners. The thesis was divided into two parts. In the theoretical part it dealt with the issue of providing nursing care to patients-foreigners which sought to highlight the roles of sister, their problem situations and state of readiness to care for these patients. They were set three objectives of this work. The first objective was to determine the roles of nurse which are dominant in their care of the patients- foreigners The second objective was to map the problem situations of nurses in providing care to patients foreigners. The last objective was to map the state of readiness of nurses in patient care of patients-foreigners. In the empirical part were set out five hypotheses. The first hypothesis was that the most common role of nurses in patients-foreigners care is the role of nursing care provider. The second hypothesis claimed that the most problem role of nurse in patients-foreigners care was the role of educator. The third hypothesis was that the greatest obstacle in providing nursing care to patients- foreigners is the language barrier. The fourth hypothesis was that the most common problem in providing nursing care to patients- foreigners is a social isolation. The fifth hypothesis was based on the assumption that nurses are theoretically prepared to care for the patients-foreigners. Based on the evaluation of an anonymous questionnaire the first, third and fourth hypothesis is confirmed. On the contrary, the second and the fifth hypothesis were not confirmed. In the first part of the research investigation was used a quantitative data collection method in the form of an anonymous questionnaire for general nurses to hospital beds stations in Hospital in České Budějovice joint-stock company, Hospital Písek joint-stock company, Hospital Strakonice joint stock company and Hospital Tábor joint-stock company. The questionnaire contained 36 closed, semi-open and open questions. In the second part of the research were used descriptive statistical functions. To evaluate statistically significant relationships were used PivotTable (Crosstabs). In total, 300 questionnaires were distributed of which the final research survey used the 226. Survey results were summarized in graphs and tables. Discussions have been confronted with the literature with the expression of the author's own opinion. At the end of the work were given the confirmed and unconfirmed hypotheses and the overall summary of work with possible suggestions to improve the quality of patients-foreigners care.

Les francos dans la vallée de l'Ebre ( XIeme-XIIe siècles) / The francos in the Ebro valley (11th-12th centuries)

Giunta, Alexandre 20 June 2015 (has links)
In the 11th and 12th centuries, populations from the other side of the Pyrenees came to settle down in the north Iberian peninsula. The Ebro valley was welcoming area for these men whose sources and historiography called francos. This topic has been studied by Marcelin Défourneaux in a famous book: Les Français en Espagne aux XIe-XIIe siècles (1949). Sixty years later, the evolution of the ressearch justifies this work. The first difficulty will be to define francos. With regard to sources, this terme denotes as well the free person as that the one coming from the north of the Pyrenees. The dynamics of exchange were determined to a large extent, though informally, by knights, churchmen, merchants, craftsmen, pilgrims and others travellers. The kings of Aragon and Navarre entrusted some migrants with the running of territories and goods. We will discuss this migration and analyze the steps of this process and the conditions on which it had been achieved. Migration from the North intensified in the eleventh and the twelfth centuries, when pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela became a mass movement. We shall emphasize its role before discussing what was at stake in the transpyrenean relationships, the settlement ofterritories conquered by Christians and the war against the Muslims. Thanks to onomastics, we will consider the presence of foreigners in the towns and its relations with the local communities. With the migration of francos to Aragon and Navarre, a change took place in that region’s approach to architectural and artistic tradition.

Maňourová, Kateřina January 2013 (has links)
This Thesis deals with the analysis of foreign clients' service level on the Czech banking market. The main aim is to evaluate the level of foreign clients' service at selected branches and specialised centres of five largest domestic banks, using the method of Mystery Shopping. Evaluation is enhanced by a survey which questions the satisfaction of foreigners with current banking services and their interest regarding specialised centres. Legal immigration - the specifics of national minorities in the Czech Republic. / Legální imigrace - specifika národnostních menšin v České republice.

Oulická, Zdeňka January 2012 (has links)
This thesis deals with legal immigration in the Czech Republic. The aim is to answer the question of whether migration is always mainly economic, that is, whether the main motive for migration is economic activity in the territory, or whether there are differences between different ethnic groups. The chosen method was the comparison of economic development and migration flows in selected countries in comparison with the Czech Republic. Furthermore the subject is an analysis of the economic activities of foreigners in the labor force and flexibility of the labor market in relation to the current economical crisis. The outcome of the thesis is the fact that Ukraine and Vietnam are typical representatives of countries with economic immigration and that motives for migration from Russia are not economical. An interesting finding of this work is the fact that even a restrictive policy of the state to protect the labor market did not affect a number of citizens in foreign territory (Czech Republic), only it reduced their total employment.
