A graphic analysis of the Bender gestalt test

Hilgert, Larry Dean 03 June 2011 (has links)
Computer technology has made rapid advances over the past several years. New developments in hardware have included the use of disks, cassette tape storage, and computer graphics. Hardware designed for specific uses has rapidly become a major component of the computer graphics technology. Many new programs have advanced the field of computer graphics and have facilitated the development of a new process termed digitizing. The present study used an Intergraph Computer System to digitize Bender Gestalt Test (BGT) protocols. This digitizing approach, although performed by the computer, can be likened to (a) taking a grid at 1/100th inch resolution, (b) placing the grid over the drawn designs, (c) reporting the X,Y coordinates which intersect the lines of the BGT drawing, (d) interpreting those X,Y coordinates statistically, and (e) developing norms for various aspects of subject drawings.A comparison was made between the computer digitizing method and the traditional method of scoring BGT protocols. The comparison was based on six indices selected from the 1977 Hutt Adience-Abience Scale. Data were collected from 60 children diagnosed as severely emotionally handicapped (SEH) and 60 children diagnosed as "normal."Intra-rater and inter-rater reliability as well as criterion-related and concurrent validity were analyzed. Reliability results favored the computer approach, while criterion-related validity was essentially the same for both computer and traditional scoring methods. Criterion validity for the traditional technique was slightly, but not significantly, higher. Concurrent validity results indicated a limited degree of similarity between the two methods; however, the discriminant properties of both methods differed. With two exceptions, all discriminant indices for both scoring methods were not significant. Drawing placement and rotation were statistically significant under the traditional method of assessment; however, neither the computer nor the traditional scoring method clearly discriminated SEH from normal children. With BGT assessment based on only six indices, lack of successful discrimination was not surprising. Previous studies recommended that the BGT be used only in a test battery when assessing emotional handicaps. The current study supported those recommendations and suggested that computer scoring can be more reliable and equally as valid as the traditional scoring method for assessing emotional factors on the BGT protocol.

Granzotto, Rosane Lorena January 2005 (has links)
Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Filosofia e Ciências Humanas. Programa de Pós-Graduação em Filosofia / Made available in DSpace on 2013-07-16T02:42:31Z (GMT). Gestalt Therapy is a motion of psychotherapeutic intervention which regards itself fundamented in a gestaltic reading of the freudian metapsychology on one hand , and a phenomenological interpretation of Gestalt Psychology on the other. Perls, Gestalt's chief mentor, referred to these fundaments as a sort of "Gestalt philosophy" somewhat developed in the work "Gestalt Therapy" , 1951, with collaborators Paul Goodman and Ralph Hefferline. This dissertation is aimed at axamining such philosophy which, in the first place, implies in an investigation of the genesis of the concepts it holds, as well as the way these concepts are chiefly articulated in that work terms. The first chapter is a survey on the origin of the psychological application of the notion of "Gestalt", which brings us the way "Gestalt philosophy" - in its first generation - reads and applies a husserlian notion of transcendent intentional object. The second chapter is Husserl's view of such applications, which he consideres to be "naturalizing", as well as his proposal of reduction of phenomenology in the transcendental philosophy environment, demonstrating which way - due to this reduction - the second generation of Gestalt Psychology begins to apply the notion of "gestalt" less as a fixed structure and more as a self-regulating field. We also discuss which way this field notion comes out in the theory which most directly contributed to the construction of the " Gestalt philosophy", that is, Goldstein's organismic theory. On the third chapter we comment how - out of Goldstein's organismic theory - Perls proposes a new gestaltic reading of Freud's metapsychology, and in what sense this new reading demands a philosophical investigation as for the goldsteinian notion of organismic intentionality. It is presented on the fourth chapter the phenomenological invesgigation which Perls and Goldstein make of the notion of organismic intentionality. On the fifth and last chapter we, finaly, describe the outcome of this investigation, which is the theory of the self, most important piece of "Gestalt philosophy" announced by Perls.

With theoretical and practical knowledge in both areas, proposes the construction of theoretical and conceptual bridges between them, trying to show the possible contributions that GT as a psychological approach can offer to psychologists working in the context of the Family Health Strategy (FHS). This is a research-driven qualitative approach, based on the proposed link between hermeneutics and dialectics, understanding that this discussion brings great contributions not only to how to do, but also how to think about the analysis of empirical material. A purposive sample includes residents psychologists and tutors related to Integrated Health Residency with Emphasis on Family and Community Health, School of Public Health of Ceará. For data collection, the use of semi-structured interviews was used. The categorization of the empirical material led to five central themes: the importance of psychological approaches, in general, for the psychologist in the ESF; visions of man and the world of humanistic approaches while guiding the work of the psychologist in the ESF; recovery by psychologists way of life of the subjects (individual or collective) and the demands stated by them; modes of intervention of the psychologist in the context of the ESF; and the theoretical and practical connections. Next, we sought to understand how these issues are close to concepts related to GT, the FHT and the Clinic Extended associating empirical themes to theoretical concepts. The results indicated that the Gestalt therapy has a good acceptance of psychologists working in the ESF, which can realize the vast majority of the contributions that this approach offers to its performance in this context. The main contribution of the GT, which will be the basis for all others, it is the starting point of a gestalt reasoning, is the vision of the whole human being, who proposed their understanding in all its dimensions. Therefore, it is recognized that the very demand for the ESF to work with an integrated view of a singular subject, where the person, family or community should be understood in its broader context, the psychologist just approaching the gestalt approach.
