[en] ESSAYS ON INFLATION EXPECTATIONS / [pt] ENSAIOS SOBRE A FORMAÇÃO DE EXPECTATIVAS DE INFLAÇÃO

DIOGO ABRY GUILLEN 24 September 2008 (has links)
[en] This dissertation is divided in four papers about monetary policy. Initially, we evaluate how inflation expectations are formed in BrazilOur results suggest that data do not follow what rational or adaptive expectations would predict. Using two different methods to measure the informational readjustment frequency in Brazil, we find evidence that inflation expectations seem to behave more closely to what sticky information theory would predict. The second paper investigates the inflation expectations transmission inside the Brazilian financial market. We propose a model in which financial market agents, when they build their own forecasts, not only observe to recent data, but also use lagged expectations from the best forecasters. Our model is evaluated empirically and we can show that the weight given to the best forecasters grows as we get closer to the release of inflation data. In the third paper, we study monetary policy and exchange rate impacts on inflation in Brazil. Our results indicate that it takes from six to twelve months until price structure returns to the one that existed before the shock. The fourth paper investigates central bank´s credibility using individual financial market agents´ expectations. Our hypothesis is that expectations´ heterogeneity for long term horizon comes from different beliefs about central bank´s aversion to inflation. Using this argument, we build a credibility index using Markov Chains for Brazil.

How does inflation expectation explain the undershooting of inflation target in Japan? : Time-series analysis within the frame of hybrid Philips curve model

Man, Chung Shun, Peterson, Mark January 2019 (has links)
Inflation target was introduced in 2013 in Japan. The goal was to maintain price stability and sustainable inflation rate that is conducive to optimal consumption and investment decisions. However, Japanese inflation rate has been consistently below the target rate. We want to examine why the failure happens in such a big economy. This thesis focuses on inflation expectation as the main factor that leads to unanchored inflation. Inflation expectation can be distinguished into adaptive and rational expectation. To analyse inflation expectation, we regress inflation on four relevant variables: forecasted inflation, lagged inflation, economic slack and import inflation. Our goal is to identify the significance of forecasted inflation and lagged inflation, which are the main variables, to determine the characteristics of the two types of inflation expectation. This time-series analysis is on a monthly basis covering the period between 2013 and 2018. The results show that agents are near-rational rather than rational, meaning that they tend to overweigh the costs of inflation. Also, it is shown that they have minor but significant backward-looking tendency and believe that past inflation determines the current inflation. Hence, inflation expectation could give some useful insights into unanchored inflation.

Os dados de inflação relativos ao último trimes / This dissertation assess the inflation dynamics in Brazil through a hybrid Phillips Curve, at the specification that allows the "forward term", represented by inflation expectation, and the "backward term" through by inertial inflation. Initially, several approaches for the Phillips Curve's theory, from classical to new Keynesian, are presented and detailed. As pointed out by the precedent literature, it is shown that the Phillips Curve has some difficulty in adjusting to the inflation dynamics and, as a consequence, that the addition of the “backward term” enhances its fit. Furthermore, the inclusion of a proxy variable for the level of activity, represented by the output gap, is not statistically significant, result supported by previous studies in literature. Finally, it is analyzed the use of a unit labor cost as a proxy for the level of activity, with no significant changes in the results. The inflation data regarding the last tree months of 2002 are influenced by the effects of the political crisis at t
