Övning och motivation : musiklärares uppfattningar om instrumentalundervisning på grundskolan / Practice and motivation : music teachers’ perception of instrument education in primary and secondary educations

The purpose of this study is to find out how music teachers talk about motivation within instrument education in primary and secondary schools, more precisely about promoting students’ motivation. Four music teachers that works with primary and secondary schools’ music education participated in interviews independently. The music teachers interviewed stress that skill development should be carefully planned to avoid overwhelming students while providing sufficient challenge. A well-structured progression helps demystify musicality for students and often gives them a sense of their ability to learn. Therefore, goal setting is crucial, and music teachers argue that initial strong guidance from the teacher with gradual transition to student autonomy enables a more independent learning process. The study also points out that group dynamics can impact motivation both positively and negatively. The music teachers interviewed in this study use role models as a tool to inspire student motivation, including using older students to motivate younger ones, and emphasize that music education should be relevant to students' everyday lives and interests: it must be meaningful to them.

Understanding STEM Students' Perceptions of Support

Efforts to increase enrollment in engineering and enhance the participation and proficiency of engineers have long been priorities, as emphasized by the National Academy of Science and the National Academy of Engineering. This imperative underscores the need for both a greater quantity and a higher caliber of engineers—colleges and universities are charged with helping students successfully progress through their programs to earn a degree. Existing research predominantly focuses on specific academic interventions or discrete support factors in attempts to understand how to best support academic success. My work, on the other hand, takes a comprehensive examination that quantifies students' perceptions of support across a wide range of sources and explores the relationship between these perceptions and student engagement in different activities. Utilizing student support data collected from undergraduate students in Engineering, Science, and Mathematics at nine institutions during the spring of 2019, the study embarks on a multifaceted exploration that unfolds in three interconnected parts. The first part employs multiple comparison analyses to unveil distinct differences in perceptions of support among different student subpopulations. The second part delves into the relational dynamics between support perceptions and students' participation in co-curricular activities using binomial regression. The third part, employing multiple linear regression, scrutinizes this relationship from a reverse perspective, acknowledging the potential bidirectional nature by examining how the level of student engagement in a range of co-curricular activities relates to their perceptions of support. The findings continue to establish further validity evidence for the newly developed STEM-SPSI tool. It also has the potential to offer valuable insights for educators, administrators, and policymakers intent on enhancing the inclusivity and efficacy of their programs. This study's potential implications underscore the importance of targeted support factors in fostering a more enriching and equitable co-curricular experience for undergraduate students. Embracing a more integrated perspective, this research contributes to evidence-based practices aimed at fostering the success and retention of students in STEM fields. / Doctor of Philosophy / Efforts to increase the number of engineers and improve their preparedness are a national priority, as emphasized by organizations like the National Academy of Engineering. Colleges and universities play a critical role in helping students succeed in their programs and earn degrees in engineering. Although most research has focused on specific academic programs or single support services, my study takes a broader look at how students perceive support from multiple sources and how these perceptions relate to their participation in activities outside the classroom. Using data from undergraduate students in engineering, science, and mathematics at nine universities in 2019, the research examines three key areas. First, it compares how different groups of students perceive support in their academic institutions. Second, it looks at how students' participation in co-curricular activities relates to their feelings of support. Lastly, it explores the reverse: how students' levels of engagement in these co-curricular activities relates to their support perceptions. The findings provide additional evidence of validity of the newly developed STEM-SPSI questionnaire, which measures student support. This research can help educators, administrators, and policymakers create more inclusive and effective programs that enhance students' overall experiences. By examining support and student engagement together, this study contributes to practices that can improve student success and retention in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.

The determination of direction of motion stereotypes for automobile controls

This experiment examined the directional relationships for six types of automobile controls: power mirrors, power windows, manual windows, stalks, generic controls, and power door locks. Two hundred driver-subjects participated in the research. Participants were divided into 4 groups of 50 each, and distributed according to age, gender, and type of vehicle they drove (domestic or foreign). During data collection, subjects were instructed to perform various types of control tasks. For each task, the direction of control activation chosen by the subject was observed and recorded. Frequencies of occurrence were then tabulated to grade the strength of directional stereotypes. In addition, statistical tests were conducted to determine the effects of age, gender, type of vehicle driven, and handedness on subject behavior. Confidence limits were also calculated and tabulated. In general, results showed that most control designs and configurations tested displayed moderate to strong stereotypes. However, weak directional stereotypes did occur whenever a control was angled away from the driver. Weak directional stereotypes were also prominent for manual window and power door !ock conditions. For the power window, the two controls mounted flush with the driver's door resulted in control selection problems (i.e., which control goes with which window), while the push-pull power window control resulted in weak directional stereotypes. The most salient result from the Chi-square statistical tests indicates that foreign car drivers utilize their stalk controls differently than domestic car drivers. Based on the overall results a list of design recommendations and directions for future research is offered. / Master of Science

An Instrument for Measuring Behavior Change Among Low-Income Youth

The Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) and its youth component, 4-H EFNEP, were established nationwide by the Cooperative Extension Service in 1969. 4-H EFNEP provides nutrition education to low-income youth, aged 5 to 19 years; however, there has been no standard instrument to evaluate behavior change among participants in Virginia or nationwide. A 24-item Youth Food Behavior Checklist (YFBC) was developed based on 13 topics and food-related behaviors taught in 4-H EFNEP. Data were collected on 47 youth enrolled in 4-H EFNEP in the summer of 1998. The YFBC was tested for test-retest reliability and ability of each item and the total instrument to detect change from pre- to post-intervention. The YFBC demonstrated good test-retest reliability with a Pearson Correlation of 0.81. Overall, the YFBC demonstrated sensitivity to detect change in nutrition behaviors, by showing positive change for some items and negative change for other items in all but nine of the participants. The YFBC also appeared to successfully measure behaviors taught in 4-H EFNEP lessons, as questions regarding only two topics did not demonstrate change from pre- to post-intervention. Since not all checklist items showed significant positive change from pre- to post-intervention, the YFBC should be tested again with a larger sample and in situations where the intervention and the administration of the instrument are better controlled. This would increase the power of the study and the credibility of the YFBC as an assessment instrument for wider use in 4-H EFNEP. / Master of Science

Validating an Instrument for Gathering Faculty Perceptions of Online Education in Radiologic Science Programs

The purpose of this quantitative study was to provide a valid and reliable instrument that can be used to collect radiologic science faculty members' perceptions of online education. Using a survey modified from an existing study, data were collected concerning faculty perceptions of online education in radiologic sciences. R was used to analyze the survey data through exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, short form optimization, and weighted multiple regression analysis to produce an instrument that exhibits both content and construct validity, is reliable, and is a shortened, optimized version of the original instrument. The findings are discussed and recommendations for future research are provided to begin work broadening this under-researched area in the field of radiologic sciences.

By content-driven, I mean that compositional process, material, mood, and affect are expressions of content drawn from visual art, literature, nature, religion, traditional aesthetics and other non-musical sources. During the journey of exploration, I was often deeply moved and inspired by a historical moment, a real-world story, a film, a poem, a statement, an image, a piece of music, or a natural law. In content-driven works, these elements play a major role in the creative processes.

This thesis, titled "Comparative Analysis of Conventional and Non-Conventional Current Transformers: Advancements, Applications, and Implications for Modern Power Systems," examines the performance and challenges of conventional and non-conventional current transformers (CTs). Conventional CTs, while reliable in traditional power systems, face issues like core saturation, mechanical stress, and environmental limitations, making them less suited for modern, dynamic systems. Non-conventional CTs, such as optical and Rogowski coil-based transformers, offer higher accuracy and better adaptability, especially in digital applications like smart grids. Through experiments, the study compares the thermal performance, accuracy, and load-handling abilities of both CT types. Results show that while conventional CTs are reliable, they struggle in environments needing precision and flexibility. Non-conventional CTs show promise but have challenges in terms of integration and calibration with existing power systems. The thesis concludes that future research should focus on dynamic impact testing, better calibration methods, and ensuring the durability of non-conventional CTs. These improvements are essential for the future of power systems that require greater accuracy, efficiency, and adaptability.

Development and Exploration of the Crucial Cs Self Report Instrument

This study aimed to explore the ability to capture the theoretical constructs of Adlerian crucial Cs (capable, connect, count, and courage) through creation of a self-report instrument for children. After following a four-phase process to develop the Crucial Cs Self Report (CCSR), including use of an expert panel, field reviews, preliminary testing, and final administration, the researcher utilized a series of exploratory factor analyses to explore the internal factor structure and relationships between items and resulting factors. The final EFA sample consisted of 112 children between the ages of 8 and 12 years recruited from various settings including three elementary schools, two mental health counseling clinics, and one private practice mental health agency. Exploratory factor analysis revealed a three-factor structure with 14 items. Refined model identified three factors later named count/significance, connect/belonging, and capable/striving. This initial exploration into the constructs of the Crucial Cs provides increased understanding of the widely used concepts. Further exploration and validation of the CCSR can help support parents and teachers in their efforts to foster healthy development of children as well as allow professionals and researchers to conceptualize progress and measure effectiveness of counseling intervention more accurately.

The aims of intrapartal care are a healthy mother and child and a positive birth experience for the woman. The aims should be achieved using the least possible number of interventions that is compatible with safety. The overall aim of this thesis was to develop an instrument based on the WHO’s recommendations for care in normal birth, to describe documented intrapartal care in a pre- and post-test following a quality improvement program and to elucidate women’s perceptions of received intrapartal care. The Delphi method was used to develop the instrument. Birth records were scrutinized in the pre-test (n=212) as well in the post-test (n=240). Women’s (n=138) perceptions were collected with a questionnaire. An instrument with 69 questions and 24 follow-up questions was developed. The results from the pre-test showed that WHO’s recommendations were only partly followed. Intrapartal care for women at low-risk was similar to care for women at high-risk. Areas for improvement were identified and a quality improvement program was carried out during a two-year period. The post-test showed that the intrapartal care changed towards more adherence to WHO’s recommendations, especially for areas where guidelines were written and for women at low-risk. No statistically significant differences were found for the number of spontaneous vaginal deliveries, mother and child at low-risk after birth, active labour longer than 12 hours or second stage longer than one hour. The result from the women’s questionnaire showed that they to a great extent received care which encompassed practices that are demonstrably useful and should be encouraged. The women’s perceptions were that all received care was of great subjective importance. The instrument developed from WHO’s recommendations can be used to examine intrapartal care. Midwives should carry out a risk assessment on the woman’s arrival at the maternity unit and plan the care together with the woman and significant others. Midwives’ documentation needs to change to incorporate interpersonal aspects. Women’s faith in intrapartal care shows the importance of continuous education for midwives in evidence-based care for normal birth. National evidence-based guidelines for intrapartal care need to be developed. / Målet med förlossningsvården är en frisk mor och ett friskt barn samt en för kvinnan positiv upplevelse av förlossningen. Dessa mål skall eftersträvas med minsta möjliga ingrepp i förlossningens förlopp men med bibehållen säkerhet för mor och barn. Det övergripande syftet med denna avhandling var att, utifrån WHO:s rekommendationer avseende vård vid normal förlossning, utveckla ett instrument för att kartlägga barnmorskors dokumenterade förlossningsvård före och efter ett kvalitetsutvecklingsprogram samt belysa kvinnors uppfattningar av förlossningsvård. Instrumentutvecklingen genomfördes med Delfimetoden. Förlossningsjournaler granskades vid såväl föremätning (n= 212) som eftermätning (n=240). Kvinnors (n=138) uppfattningar insamlades med en enkät. Ett instrument omfattande 69 frågor och 24 uppföljningsfrågor utvecklades. Resultatet av föremätningen visar att WHO:s rekommendationer bara delvis följdes. Inga statistiskt signifikanta skillnader noterades beträffande antalet spontana förlossningar, antalet mödrar och barn som var lågrisk efter förlossningen, antalet aktiva förlossningar över 12 timmar och antalet förlossningar med utdrivningsskede över 1 timma. Enkätstudien till kvinnorna visar att de i stor utsträckning erhöll vård enligt den praxis som är bra och bör uppmuntras. Kvinnorna uppfattade genomgående att erhållen vård var av stor subjektiv betydelse. Instrumentet med utgångspunkt från WHO:s rekommendationer kan användas vid kartläggning av förlossningsvård. Barnmorskor bör göra en riskbedömning vid kvinnans ankomst till förlossningen och planera vården tillsammans med kvinnan och anhöriga utifrån denna. Barnmorskors dokumentation behöver förändras för att såväl omfatta medicinsk-tekniska som mellanmänskliga aspekter. Kvinnors tillit till förlossningsvården visar på vikten av att barnmorskor erhåller kontinuerlig fortbildning i evidensbaserad vård avseende normal förlossning. Evidensbaserade nationella riktlinjer för vård vid förlossning behöver utvecklas.

The Recorder in the Twentieth Century

The purpose of this paper is to acquaint the reader with the state of the recorder as a musical instrument in this century. Information has been gathered from standard texts and journal articles to gain more recent ideas. The work is divided into three sections: (1) a brief history of the instrument; (2) a biographical sketch of Arnold Dolmetsch, the man who was most responsible for the revival of the recorder in this century; and (3) a detailed examination of the use of the recorder today. This last section includes the recorder in education, music written for it, recorder performance and organizations, and construction of the recorder. An appendix lists recorders that are available to players in this country. It is this writer's conclusion that the recorder today has regained its status as a performing medium.
