Previous issue date: 2014-03-14 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The following research focuses on the widespread use of Cloud Computing as a result of a major market boost due to the latest trends and needs. It has progressed as a result of advanced technology providing businesses a high standard of service as well as being of great benefit to its users. This final work is aimed at demonstrating users and potencial ones the benefits as well as the possibilities and challenges involved in the use of Cloud Computing and therefore allow them to identify, understand and manage such a service. As a result users shall be able to hire services involving a low risk factor in addition to implementing an appropriate workload. Due to the lack of information regarding Cloud Computing services, we believe that this research can provide users a valuable contribution in clarifying and highlighting both the potentiality and benefits involved as well as analysing the reasons they have not been able to benefit from them so far. We would like to point out that when we searched for literature regarding specifically the service users no significant data was collected. As a result we strongly believe that if such material is published it will represent a significant contribution towards both the users and the academic community. At first we carried out a state of the art study regarding Cloud Computing, identifying the potential benefits involved in providing such a service as well as the impact such a model has had on the information technology scenario. Then we implemented the case study metodology in which three real cases with the model in use were closely followed. Reference is also made to prestigious companies with a solid background within their market segment and the respective services they provide. This will allow the users to obtain the necessary backup in order to be able to previously analyse the ideal sevice which will suit their needs. We concluded that companies seem to be cautious about implementing such a structure due to their concern about mainly operational and safety measures. Cloud Computing´s progress depends on such an acceptance. Therefore this text focuses on identifying and analysing the challenges and benefits involved in implementing such a model. Research has been done with the specific aim of offering a wide range of businesses an overview of Cloud Computing as well as enabling users to overcome any difficulties / Esta pesquisa trata da utilização de Cloud Computing, mostrando sua disseminação impulsionada pelas tendências e necessidades do mercado.

Virtual human representation, adaptation, delivery and interoperability for virtual worlds / Représentation humaine virtuelle, adaptation, distribution et interopérabilité dans les mondes virtuelsJovanova, Blagica 29 March 2011 (has links)
In the last few years 3D Virtual Worlds (3DVWs) became a reality. Initially considered as a new mean for social communication, triggered by the development of software and hardware technology, 3DVWs are exposing now different functionalities, experiences and acquaintances. Therefore, they achieved their popularity very fast, indicated by the number and the progression of active users. Being the representation of the user, the avatar is one of the most significant and most complex assets of a Virtual World. A short analysis of a VW content allows one to observe that from the point of view of the storage/transmission the most significant amount is represented by the VW assets. Within the set of assets, the avatars are the most complex structures, consisting of different components: geometry, images, animations, structures, etc. The overall objective of developing tools and methods for a large deployment of VW are translated into three specific ones: To propose a compression framework to enable efficient, compact transfer of avatars, and general 3D graphics assets. Specifically for avatars, the framework should be independent from the representation formalism. To propose an optimized solution making the avatars accessible on weak terminals such as mobile phones. To define a metadata model allowing avatars interoperability between different VWs. The three objectives are addressed in this thesis and for each we propose original contributions.

Towards developing a goal-driven data integration framework for counter-terrorism analyticsLiu, Dapeng 01 January 2019 (has links)
Terrorist attacks can cause massive casualties and severe property damage, resulting in terrorism crises surging across the world; accordingly, counter-terrorism analytics that take advantage of big data have been attracting increasing attention. The knowledge and clues essential for analyzing terrorist activities are often spread across heterogeneous data sources, which calls for an effective data integration solution. In this study, employing the goal definition template in the Goal-Question-Metric approach, we design and implement an automated goal-driven data integration framework for counter-terrorism analytics. The proposed design elicits and ontologizes an input user goal of counter-terrorism analytics; recognizes goal-relevant datasets; and addresses semantic heterogeneity in the recognized datasets. Our proposed design, following the design science methodology, presents a theoretical framing for on-demand data integration designs that can accommodate diverse and dynamic user goals of counter-terrorism analytics and output integrated data tailored to these goals.

Uma abordagem para a integração de diferentes fontes de dados provenientes de redes de sensores no contexto de internet das coisas / An Approach for the Integration of Different Data Sources from Sensor Networks in the Internet of Things ContextBarros, Vinícius Aires 05 August 2019 (has links)
Internet of Things (IoT) has a primary characteristic of the network connection among devices e.g., sensors, smartphones, and wearables, in order to collect information about the physical environments. A related challenge is the non-standardization of communication among devices and a mechanism that performs data processing, storage, and retrieval in a simplified way, hence interoperability a big problem. This thesis introduces the Internet of Things Data as a Service Module (IoTDSM), an approach that is based on the Data as a Service (DaaS) model, which aims to assist the management of heterogeneous sensor data sources, regardless the data source, format or database system utilized. In addition, the Internet of Things Multi-Protocol Message Broker (IoTM2B) is presented, an extension of IoTDSM that allows integration with different sensor networks communication protocols. The performance evaluation methodology was utilized to evaluate this research, which contributed to the identification of the limitations of the proposed mechanisms. Furthermore, different evaluation scenarios were employed: (i) performance evaluation of the Global Sensor Network (GSN), which assisted the execution of the others evaluation scenarios; (ii) performance evaluation of IoTDSM employing different database systems (PostgreSQL or MongoDB) and input/output data formats (JSON or XML) for the processing world wide climatic data; (iii) performance evaluation of IoTM2B strategy which allowed the integration of IoTDSM with the HTTP, MQTT and CoAP protocols in a Machine-to-Machine (M2M) and Cloud Computing environment; and (iv) evaluation of an architecture for emotion recognition on smart home environment. Finally, a discussion is made about the results obtained, besides demonstrating the possibility of the integration of IoTDSM and IoTM2B with different data formats, storage strategies, and communication protocols.

The building contributes mostly to the challenges of energy transition. In order to better reduce consumption, ensure better comfort, answer to the environmental and regulatory requirements while minimizing the total price, we propose to equip the design (from the sketch phase to the more advanced design phases, ...) with solutions offering a global view of the building and making optimal choices. Building design is characterized by many complementary models and simulation tools but they are independent and heterogeneous. In response to this problem of interoperability, we propose a service oriented approach, based on the Internet, to cover the aspects of global modeling and decision support. We address in particular the problems related to co-simulation strategies and algorithms, multi-objective discrete hybrid optimization and multicriteria decision support. This work is carried out within the framework of the ANR COSIMPHI in strong partnership with the CSTB.

Transformation of business collaboration in a digital age : Towards a multi-relation perspectiveKhisro, Jwan January 2019 (has links)
The process of digitalisation is progressively transforming the way business is carried out and how enterprises collaborate. In this digital age, characterised by collaborations among a larger community of suppliers, customers, employees, and governments, all partners need to understand avariety of relations and how digitalisation transforms them. However, it is difficult to understand the multitude of unclear or even unknown relations generated by re-coordinating different types of relations in this digital age. Accordingly, this thesis contributes to the understanding of the transformation of business collaboration by exploring how collaboration can be understood in a digital age. The theoretical concepts involved collaboration, enterprise architecture, enterprise interoperability, and boundary object. These concepts enabled digging deeper into the complexity of sharing and aligning social and cultural worlds between communities of practice. The methodology employed was hermeneutics, which was suitable for understanding human activities. The study object concerned national development of data hubs for the electricity market in Denmark and Sweden, which replaced an old way of communicating point to point between companies. This was implemented in order to coordinate and manage data transactions between grid companies and electricity suppliers. The results indicated that digitalisation tends to increase the ability to manage collaboration and even closer relations among partners by clearly identifying every partner role and responsibility. Further, business collaboration appeared to transform from a traditional collaboration to a multi-relation collaboration that addressed digital age demands more comprehensively. / <p>Vid tidpunkten för framläggningen av avhandlingen var följande delarbete opublicerat: delarbete 2 (accepterat).</p><p>At the time of the defence the following paper was unpublished: paper 2 (accepted).</p>

A Comparison of Vistrails and Taverna, and Workflow InteroperabilityNyasulu, Jonas January 2009 (has links)
<p>In silico experiments in the field of bioinformatics generate large amounts of data since most of the tasks are done in an exploratory fashion. Workflows are one of the many tools used by scientists to model complex tasks. The interoperability of data generated from these tools plays an important role in improving the efficiency of such tools and also in verifying results from other experiments. We aim to compare workflow systems by integrating bioinformatics data in Vistrails and Taverna. We also look at how the two systems use the open provenance model that has been developed to bring provenance interoperability. We developed web services to perform similar functions of some workflows in Vistrails. With the services we were able to perform most of the tasks we planned using both systems. Differences in how lists of items are processed in the two systems results in differences in how workflows are composed in the two systems. In Taverna there is implicit iteration and Vistrails requires the use of additional modules to perform iteration. There are also differences in the execution times of workflows using web services, with workflows in Taverna taking longer than their counterparts in Vistrails. There are some similarities in the execution pattern of workflows if same workflow is invokedmultiple times, with the first invocation taking longer time than the subsequent ones.</p>

Decentralized resource brokering for heterogeneous grid environmentsTordsson, Johan January 2006 (has links)
<p>The emergence of Grid computing infrastructures enables researchers to share resources and collaborate in more efficient ways than before, despite belonging to different organizations and being distanced geographically. While the Grid computing paradigm offers new opportunities, it also gives rise to new difficulties. One such problem is the selection of resources for user applications. Given the large and disparate set of Grid resources, manual resource selection becomes impractical, even for experienced users. This thesis investigates methods, algorithms and software for a Grid resource broker, i.e., a scheduling agent that automates the resource selection process for the user. The development of such a component is a non-trivial task as Grid resources are heterogeneous in hardware, software, availability, ownership and usage policies. A wide range of algorithmically difficult issues must also be solved, including characterization of jobs, prediction of resource performance, data placement considerations, and, how to provide Quality of Service guarantees. One contribution of this thesis is the development of resource brokering algorithms that enable resource selection based on Grid job performance predictions and use advance reservations to provide Quality of Service guarantees. The thesis also includes an algorithm for coallocation of sets of jobs. This algorithm guarantees a simultaneous start of each subjob, as required e.g., when running larger-than-supercomputer simulations that involve multiple resources.</p><p>We today have the somewhat paradoxal situation where Grids, originally aimed to overcome interoperability problems between different computing platforms, themselves struggle with interoperability problems caused by the wide range of interfaces, protocols and data formats that are used in different environments. The reasons for this situation are obvious, expected and almost impossible to avoid, as the task of defining appropriate standards, models and best-practices must be preceded by basic research, proof-of-concept implementations and real-world testing. We address the interoperability problem with a generic Grid resource brokering architecture and job submission service.</p><p>By using (proposed) standard formats and protocols, the service acts as an interoperability-bridge that translates job requests between clients and resources running different Grid middlewares. This concept is demonstrated by the integration of the service with three different Grid middlewares. The service also enables users to both fine-tune the existing resource selection algorithms and plug in custom brokering algorithms tailored to their requirements.</p>

The Design and Implementation of a Corporate Householding Knowledge Processor to Improve Data QualityMadnick, Stuart, Wang, Richard, Xian, Xiang 06 February 2004 (has links)
Advances in Corporate Householding are needed to address certain categories of data quality problems caused by data misinterpretation. In this paper, we first summarize some of these data quality problems and our more recent results from studying corporate householding applications and knowledge exploration. Then we outline a technical approach to a Corporate Householding Knowledge Processor (CHKP) to solve a particularly important type of corporate householding problem - entity aggregation. We illustrate the operation of the CHKP by using a motivational example in account consolidation. Our CHKP design and implementation uses and expands on the COntext INterchange (COIN) technology to manage and process corporate householding knowled
