FOUNDATION INITIATIVE 2010: THE FOUNDATION FOR RANGE INTEROPERABILITYRumford, George J., Vuong, Minh, Bachinsky, Stephen T., Powell, Edward T. 10 1900 (has links)
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 22-25, 2001 / Riviera Hotel and Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada / Foundation Initiative 2010 (FI 2010) is a joint interoperability initiative of the Director, Operational Test and Evaluation. The vision of FI 2010 is to enable interoperability among ranges, facilities, and simulations in a timely and cost-efficient manner and to foster reuse of range assets and future range system developments. To achieve this vision, FI 2010 is developing and validating a common architecture with a common range object model, a core set of tools, inter-range communication capabilities, interfaces to existing range assets, interfaces to weapon systems, and recommended procedures for conducting synthetic test events and training exercises. During FY 01, the project is developing the second Test and Training ENabling Architecture (TENA) Middleware Prototype as a basis for range communication. FI 2010 will advance a simulation-based acquisition or a ‘distributed engineering plant’ methodology to streamline weapon system acquisition. Benefits from the FI 2010 products include cost effective replacement of customized data links, enhanced exchange of mission data, organic TENA-compliant capabilities at test sites to be leveraged for future test events, and instrumentation system reuse. Through FI 2010, future inter-range operations, instrumentation development, and range capability sustainment will cost less and incur less risk.

A framework for grid-enabling scientific workflow systems : architecture and application case studies on interoperability and heterogeneity in support for grid workflow automationAzam, Nabeel Adeem January 2010 (has links)
Since the early 2000s, Service Oriented Architectures (SOAs) have played a key role in the development of complex applications within a virtual organization (VO) context. Grids and workflows have emerged as vital technologies for addressing the (SOA) paradigm. Given the variety of Grid middleware, scientific workflow systems and Grid workflows available, bringing the two technologies together in a flexible, reusable and generalized way has been largely overlooked, particularly from a scientific end user perspective. The lack of domain focus in this area has led to a slow uptake of Grid technologies. This thesis aims to design a framework for Grid-enabling workflows, which identifies the essential technological components, how these components fit together in layered architecture and the interactions between them. To produce such a framework, this thesis first investigates the definition of a Grid-workflow architecture and mapping Grid functionality to workflow nodes, focusing on striking a balance between performance, usability and the Grid functionality supported. Next, it presents an examination of framework extensions for supporting various forms of Grid heterogeneity, essential for ii VO based collaboration. Given the complex nature of Grid technologies, the work presented here investigates abstracting Grid based workflows through high-level definitions and resolution using semantic technologies. Finally, this thesis presents a way to resolves abstract Grid workflows using semantic technologies and intelligent, autonomous agents. The frameworks presented in this thesis are tested and evaluated within the context of domain-based case studies defined in the SIMDAT, BRIDGE and ARGUGRID EU funded research projects.

Interoperability Infrastructure and Incremental learning for unreliable heterogeneous communicating SystemsHaseeb, Abdul January 2009 (has links)
<p>In a broader sense the main research objective of this thesis (and ongoing research work) is distributed knowledge management for mobile dynamic systems. But the primary focus and presented work focuses on communication/interoperability of heterogeneous entities in an infrastructure less paradigm, a distributed resource manipulation infrastructure and distributed learning in the absence of global knowledge. The research objectives achieved discover the design aspects of heterogeneous distributed knowledge systems towards establishing a seamless integration. This thesis doesn’t cover all aspects in this work; rather focuses on interoperability and distributed learning.</p><p>Firstly a discussion on the issues in knowledge management for swarm of heterogeneous entities is presented. This is done in a broader and rather abstract fashion to provide an insight of motivation for interoperability and distributed learning towards knowledge management. Moreover this will also serve the reader to understand the ongoing work and research activities in much broader perspective.</p><p>Primary focus of this thesis is communication/interoperability of heterogeneous entities in an infrastructure less paradigm, a distributed resource manipulation infrastructure and distributed learning in the absence of global knowledge. In dynamic environments for mobile autonomous systems such as robot swarms or mobile software agents there is a need for autonomic publishing and discovery of resources and just-in-time integration for on-the-fly service consumption without any a priori knowledge. SOA (Service-Oriented Architecture) serves the purpose of resource reuse and sharing of services different entities. Web services (a SOA manifestation) achieves these objectives but its exploitation in dynamic environments, where the communication infrastructure is lacking, requires a considerable research. Generally Web services are exploited in stable client-server paradigms, which is a pressing assumption when dynamic distributed systems are considered. UDDI (Universal Description Discovery and Integration) is the main pediment in the exploitation of Web services in distributed control and dynamic natured systems. UDDI can be considered as a directory for publication and discovery of categorized Web services but assumes a centralized registry; even if distributed registries and associated mechanism are employed problems of collaborative communication in infrastructure less paradigms are ignored.</p><p>Towards interoperability main contribution this thesis is a mediator-based distributed Web services discovery and invocation middleware, which provides a collaborative and decentralized services discovery and management middleware for infrastructure-less mobile dynamic systems with heterogeneous communication capabilities. Heterogeneity of communication capabilities is abstracted in middleware by a conceptual classification of computing entities on the basis of their communication capabilities and communication issues are resolved via conceptual overlay formation for query propagation in system.</p><p>The proposed and developed middleware has not only been evaluated extensively using Player Stage simulator but also been applied in physical robot swarms. Experimental validations analyze the results in different communication modes i. active and ii. passive mode of communication with and without shared resource conflict resolution. I analyze discoverable Web services with respect to time, services available in complete view of cluster and the impact and resultant improvements in distributed Web services discovery by using caching and semantics.</p><p>Second part of this thesis focuses on distributed learning in the absence of global information. This thesis takes the argument of defeasibility (common-sense inference) as the basis of intelligence in human-beings, in which conclusions/inferences are drawn and refuted at the same time as more information becomes available. The ability of common-sense reasoning to adapt to dynamic environments and reasoning with uncertainty in the absence of global information seems to be best fit for distributed learning for dynamic systems.</p><p>This thesis, thus, overviews epistemic cognition in human beings, which motivates the need of a similar epistemic cognitive solution in fabricated systems and considers formal concept analysis as a case for incremental and distributed learning of formal concepts. Thesis also presents a representational schema for underlying logic formalism and formal concepts. An algorithm for incremental learning and its use-case for robotic navigation, in which robots incrementally learn formal concepts and perform common-sense reasoning for their intelligent navigation, is also presented. Moreover elaboration of the logic formalism employed and details of implementation of developed defeasible reasoning engine is given in the latter half of this thesis.</p><p>In summary, the research results and achievements described in this thesis focus on interoperability and distributed learning for heterogeneous distributed knowledge systems which contributes towards establishing a seamless integration in mobile dynamic systems.</p> / QC 20100614 / ROBOSWARM EU FP6

A framework to support semantic interoperability in product design and manufactureChungoora, Nitishal January 2010 (has links)
It has been recognised that the ability to communicate the meaning of concepts and their intent within and across system boundaries, for supporting key decisions in product design and manufacture, is impaired by the semantic interoperability issues that are presently encountered. This work contributes to the field of semantic interoperability in product design and manufacture. An attribution is made to the understanding and application of relevant concepts coming from the computer science world, notably ontology-based approaches, to help resolve semantic interoperability problems. A novel ontological approach, identified as the Semantic Manufacturing Interoperability Framework (SMIF), has been proposed following an exploration of the important requirements to be satisfied. The framework, built on top of a Common Logic-based ontological formalism, consists of a manufacturing foundation to capture the semantics of core feature-based design and manufacture concepts, over which the specialisation of domain models can take place. Furthermore, the framework supports the mechanisms for allowing the reconciliation of semantics, thereby improving the knowledge sharing capability between heterogeneous domains that need to interoperate and have been based on the same manufacturing foundation. This work also analyses a number of test case scenarios, where the framework has been deployed for fostering knowledge representation and reconciliation of models involving products with standard hole features and their related machining process sequences. The test cases have shown that the Semantic Manufacturing Interoperability Framework (SMIF) provides effective support towards achieving semantic interoperability in product design and manufacture. Proposed extensions to the framework are additionally identified so as to provide a view on imminent future work.

Modeling Faceted Browsing with Category Theory for Reuse and InteroperabilityHarris, Daniel R. 01 January 2017 (has links)
Faceted browsing (also called faceted search or faceted navigation) is an exploratory search model where facets assist in the interactive navigation of search results. Facets are attributes that have been assigned to describe resources being explored; a faceted taxonomy is a collection of facets provided by the interface and is often organized as sets, hierarchies, or graphs. Faceted browsing has become ubiquitous with modern digital libraries and online search engines, yet the process is still difficult to abstractly model in a manner that supports the development of interoperable and reusable interfaces. We propose category theory as a theoretical foundation for faceted browsing and demonstrate how the interactive process can be mathematically abstracted in order to support the development of reusable and interoperable faceted systems.
Existing efforts in facet modeling are based upon set theory, formal concept analysis, and light-weight ontologies, but in many regards they are implementations of faceted browsing rather than a specification of the basic, underlying structures and interactions. We will demonstrate that category theory allows us to specify faceted objects and study the relationships and interactions within a faceted browsing system. Resulting implementations can then be constructed through a category-theoretic lens using these models, allowing abstract comparison and communication that naturally support interoperability and reuse.
In this context, reuse and interoperability are at two levels: between discrete systems and within a single system. Our model works at both levels by leveraging category theory as a common language for representation and computation. We will establish facets and faceted taxonomies as categories and will demonstrate how the computational elements of category theory, including products, merges, pushouts, and pullbacks, extend the usefulness of our model. More specifically, we demonstrate that categorical constructions such as the pullback and pushout operations can help organize and reorganize facets; these operations in particular can produce faceted views containing relationships not found in the original source taxonomy. We show how our category-theoretic model of facets relates to database schemas and discuss how this relationship assists in implementing the abstractions presented.
We give examples of interactive interfaces from the biomedical domain to help illustrate how our abstractions relate to real-world requirements while enabling systematic reuse and interoperability. We introduce DELVE (Document ExpLoration and Visualization Engine), our framework for developing interactive visualizations as modular Web-applications in order to assist researchers with exploratory literature search. We show how facets relate to and control visualizations; we give three examples of text visualizations that either contain or interact with facets. We show how each of these visualizations can be represented with our model and demonstrate how our model directly informs implementation.
With our general framework for communicating consistently about facets at a high level of abstraction, we enable the construction of interoperable interfaces and enable the intelligent reuse of both existing and future efforts.

Métricas de avaliação de alinhamento de ontologias / Measures of Evaluation of Ontology AlignmentsBispo Junior, Esdras Lins 04 August 2011 (has links)
In the ontology matching field, different metrics are used to evaluate the resulting alignments. Metrics based on alignment adopt the basic principle of verifying a proposed alignment against a reference alignment. Some of these metrics do not achieve good results because (i) they cannot always distinguish between a totally wrong alignment and one which is almost correct; and (ii) they cannot estimate the effort for the user to refine the resulting alignment. This work aims to present a new approach to evaluate ontology alignments. Our approach presents a measure that uses the usual queries in the original ontologies to assess the quality of the proposed alignment. We also present some satisfactory results of our approach with regard to widely used metrics.

The high availability of health information through information systems can be provided only with the use of systems that are able to exchange data securely and consistently. To this end, these systems need to be interoperable, capable of exchanging information that is understood both at one end as the other. One of the most important characteristics of such systems is the use of terminologies in health, allowing the coding of clinical terms in a robust and consistent manner. Some of the most known and used terminologies are: SNOMED-CT, ICD-CM, ICD, LOINC, NANDA, TUSS, CBHPM, and SUS Procedures Table, among others. When systems do not use the same terminology for encoding the same concept, it is necessary to perform mappings and translations between the terminologies. The mapping between terminologies consists on establishing the relevant associations present in terminologies, so that each term belonging to one can be associated unambiguously to the terms belonging to another. This mapping is typically created by domain experts who work analyzing the two terms in question and manually setting these associations. In this paper, we propose a methodology that aims to facilitate this type of mapping, through the use of two frameworks: Association Rules, for the extraction of preexisting associations between the terminologies in clinical records; and Textual Search, for pairing between the two terminologies concepts based on the identification of common terms. The creation of these mappings by experts is aided by the method suggesting links between the terminologies through the Association Rules or Textual Search. As a result of this work we obtained a generic methodology for mapping between terminologies able to successfully assist the experts. In approximately 40% of cases the experts agreed with the suggestions. As a complement, we obtained a partial mapping between two specific terminologies for coding surgical procedures: the ICD9-CM and TUSS, used as use case to validate the methodology.

Artesanato digital na produção pré-fabricada de edificações de alta eficiência energética / Digital craft in production of the energy-efficient prefab buildingsDomingues, Eduardo Hernandes 16 May 2014 (has links)
Physical models (mock-ups and prototypes) are usually employed during design and development phases of prefab homes in order to assess the performance of the components during assembly phase. These are typical examples of craft developed on the margins of industrial processes. The building industry, regardless of level of industrialization, actually does not have shown preference in using manufacturing software for design development; many companies prefer two-dimensional CAD software or BIM system-based software. In this context, the aim of this dissertation is to demonstrate how the use of manufacturing software contributes to the efficiency of digital prototyping in the production of prefab homes. Four systems of an energy-efficient prefab home were analyzed: structure, portable vertical coatings, roof panels with magnetic attachment devices and transparent guardrails. The design of these systems were developed using manufacturing software whose interoperability with CNC machines was crucial to the achievement of the project´s goals. The assessment of the assembly process of the systems was made by means of manufacturing software using digital components modeled as from the shape of the designed components and of the physical characteristics of materials.Assembly simulations were made by using digital prototyping, avoiding expensive and time-consuming processes of producing and assessment physicalmodels. As a result a team of 20 students, not specialized in the production of buildings, have assembled an energy efficient house, with floor area of 45 m2, in 150 hours, during an international competition among universities held in Madrid, September 2012. Application of the method was possible due to the valuation of the team work during the design phase, when the main decisions concerning production were taken. The correct use of digital prototyping resources enables users to try reliable scenarios and ensure safety conditions during production.
