Three Essays on the Effects of Equity Option Introduction

Ragle, William F. 08 1900 (has links)
This dissertation is structured as three essays on various aspects of equity option introduction. Topics addressed include the relative predictability of introduction, the relationship between predictability of introduction and the price effect associated with introduction, and a comparison of the price response of optioned versus nonoptioned stocks to changes in dividends. Essay 1 involves use of firm-specific variables in a LOGIT model to allow assignment of a probability of equity option introduction. Two samples were developed: one of firms that were optioned, the other of firms which met the objective standards but were not optioned. A LOGIT model is used to assign a probability of optioning to each firm. A holdout sample is used to test the out-of-sample predictive power of the model. Firms were correctly classified as optioned or nonoptioned in about 85 percent of cases. Various researchers have detected abnormal positive returns associated with stock option introduction. In an efficient market context, this would indicate that option introduction is "good" news to financial markets. If optioning is predictable, stocks with a higher probability of optioning would be expected to show less price response when options are introduced. In Essay 2, the relationship between the probability of optioning and abnormal returns is tested using a standard event methodology. Utilizing nonparametric statistics, no significant differences were detected among abnormal returns of portfolios formed on the basis of probability of option introduction. Essay 3 compares abnormal returns of optioned and nonoptioned stocks around announced dividend changes. Two samples were obtained. Firms in the first (second) sample had significant dividend changes while options were (were not) available on their stocks. Standard event methodology is used to compare price responses of the two samples. If the price response of optioned stocks is less pronounced than the price response of nonoptioned stocks, this may indicate that optioned stocks are more efficiently priced. Reasons for this increased efficiency are examined in the study. Abnormal returns for the optioned sample were not significantly different from zero. Those for the nonoptioned sample were significantly different from zero for all event windows tested.

The ecology of invasions by Pinus (pinaceae) and Hakea (proteaceae) species, with special emphasis on patterns, processes and consequences of invasion in mountain fynbos of the southwestern Cape Province, South Africa

Richardson, David Mark January 1989 (has links)
The fire-prone mountain fynbos of the southwestern Cape Province of South Africa has been severely invaded by introduced trees and shrubs. These invasions have transformed fynbos shrublands to dense thickets of trees and shrubs in many parts of the region, thus disrupting various natural ecosystem processes. The ecology of invasions by species of Pinus and Hakea (the most successful genera) was studied using a series of natural experiments in conjunction with autecological studies. The study was divided into main four parts: (i) case studies to elucidate major patterns and processes of invasion; (ii) studies of the life history and population ecology of selected invaders; (iii) studies of the determinants of invasibility; and (iv) assessments of the consequences of invasion and of control programmes. Bibliography: pages 235-272.

Arévalo, Miguel, Montenegro, José, Viacava, Gino, Raymundo, Carlos, Dominguez, Francisco 01 January 2020 (has links)
El texto completo de este trabajo no está disponible en el Repositorio Académico UPC por restricciones de la casa editorial donde ha sido publicado. / This article explores the application of continuous improvement tools in company M4C1 to improve processes and production procedure for a production line of polo shirts and the distribution of workstations to provide a more efficient flow, thereby reducing non-productive times of materials and people transportation. The steps to determine the correct approach of the procedures to control excess in production times and reprocesses for its correct implementation, flow charts, and work indicators to measure the production processes of polo shirts will be described. The Arena Simulation tool will then be used to simulate the operation of the production process of polo shirts and to compare the results before and after implementation. Finally, the conclusions of the project will be presented.

Industrial Arts in Utah--Its Introduction and Development

Hailes, Charles W. 01 May 1953 (has links)
For the past few years many questions have been asked about the growth and development of the industrial arts program in Utah. Many of these questions could not be answered by leading educators. Thus, it is hoped that with the information presented in this report enlightenment may be given to unnswered questions. The roots of present-day concepts and practices of industrial arts in Utah extend back fifty years to the first schools established by the Mormon pioneers. The first school, in its simple setting, faced such issues as: what kind of industrial arts training shall be provided? How much will it cost? What will be its future? Some of the outstanding developments in various periods of the history of the state of Utah illustrate the significance of the growth and development of the industrial arts program. Thus, the major purposes of the present study are to identify the more important policies and practices from the period of the introduction of industrial arts up to and including the year 1952. Additional purposes of the study may be state as follows: 1. To encourage and assist lay citizens and professional educators to improve their understandings and to support more willingly the industrial arts program in the state of Utah. 2. To assemble evidence showing as clearly as possible the effects of the industrial arts program. 3. To cooperate with the public schools in Utah in assembling pertinent information regarding the introduction and development of the industrial arts program. Such a study should help to center attention on the importance of an industrial arts program as a basis for determining those practices which are being carried on in the state of Utah today. Furthermore, it whould indicated some of the most significant affects of the industrial arts program on the general educational prgogram of today.

Dreams End: A Young Adult Urban Fantasy with Critical Introduction

Leavitt, Elizabeth 01 May 2015 (has links)
This two-section thesis explores the subjective nature of villainy. The larger section, "Dream’s End," is an urban-fantasy young-adult fiction piece I’ve written in epistolary form. I preface the fiction with a critical introduction in which I briefly examine existing definitional scholarship on 1) epistolary fiction, 2) the urban fantasy genre, and 3) the young adult genre. Epistolary fiction may be letters, diaries, or journal entries. Following this exploration, I examine the subjective nature of villains and antagonists in narratives. While "Dream’s End" does not specifically discuss or critique feminist theory, it considers criticism of existing female tropes in its portrayal of both the characters and their roles in relation to one another. The second section of the thesis is comprised of a collection of journal entries, divided into six chapters, wherein protagonist Emma keeps a record of the experiences she has while traveling to another world in her dreams. In this alternate dream world, Emma finds community and purpose absent from her waking life, but must ultimately come to terms with a perceived betrayal and various moral quandaries when her two worlds begin to bleed together. The journal entries will eventually be incorporated into a novel as backstory, and so are presented with a brief explanation as to their significance to the larger narrative. Through the various characters in these journal entries, I explore the complex nature of protagonists and antagonists, and discuss how the classification of each is relative to the experience and perceptions of the characters within the narrative, as well as the readers outside it.

Ny läroplan - också för rektor? : En studie av rektors förståelse av sitt förändrade uppdrag

Jacobsson, Niclas January 2022 (has links)
In 2019, the preschool got a new curriculum, Lpfö 18. One of the changes means that the division of responsibilities regarding the introduction of children and its guardians is formally shifted from preschool teacher to principal. The aim of this study is to develop knowledge about how principals in preschool understand their mission regarding the introduction of children and families to preschool. The study is based on the following questions: Based on the curriculum changes, how do principals describe and understand: introduction of each child together with guardians to the education in preschools? their work to lead the organization for a high quality introduction? the preschools' process of monitoring the quality of the introduction? The empiric result shows that the principals are focusing on an equivalent introduction and that they lead the work through distributed and indirect leadership. Conclusions from the study are that the principals are well aware of their responsibility when it comes to creating a good introduction for every child with their guardians in the preschool but the principals have not changed their leadership act based on the change in the curriculum.
