Kommunikationen inom en global industrikoncern : en kvalitativ fallstudie

Denna undersökning syftar till att undersöka om de som är involverade i WISH på Metall-precision AB uppfattar WISH som en förbättrad och effektivare kommunikationsstrategi. Vi syftar på förbättrad i relation till hur det var innan WISH infördes, det vill säga innan år 2009. Kommunikationen inom WISH studeras främst ur ett manager perspektiv, tio av tolv inter-vjupersoner i denna undersökning har ett personalansvar. Undersökningen ägde rum på Metallprecision AB i Västersund. Sedan år 2009 pågår ett nytt förbättringsarbete, en förändringsprocess, som leder till effektiviseringar och förbättringar för Metallprecision AB. Detta förbättringsarbete kallas WISH. Vi genomförde tolv semistruk-turerade intervjuer. Resultatet visar att det finns flera olika uppfattningar om vad WISH syfte, mål och vision är för något. Alla involverade har dock en god förstålse för WISH och hur WISH praktiskt hjälper dem i deras dagliga arbete. Angående personalens olika uppfattningar av WISH syfte, mål och vision, så behöver det inte vara negativt att det råder viss variation inom rimliga gränser. Eftersom viss mångtydighet och flexibilitet främjar lärande och utveckling inom organisationen. För hård styrning via symboler och beteenden kan till och med begränsa kommunikation, därför kan det finnas styrkor med personalens olika uppfattningar enligt ovan, anser vi. Däremot kom vi fram till att det skulle finnas fördelar med att utbilda personalen mer då det gäller intranätet men även inom kommunikation eftersom vi upptäckte en del kommunikations-brister inom WISH utifrån vårt resultat. Det som idag främjar kommunikation inom WISH är delaktighet och diskussion som före-kommer på de regelbundna team och auditmötena.

Nonetheless, much research has pointed out a gap in terms of labor productivity, quality, performance and responsiveness to customer needs when compared with other large industrial sectors / sectors that have recently experienced huge gains and cost reductions via methods like Lean Six Sigma. In this study, the construction industry will be examined for determination of the potential Lean Six Sigma implementation level and expected benefits from its use. The author conducted interviews with three companies in order to find out their readiness for such a management by innovation. One of the companies was selected for further study due to suitability of their organizational structure, innovative strategy and interest in this study. By taking up this pilot study and Lean Six Sigma principles as references, five roadmaps are generated as a guidance to implement Lean Six Sigma methodology for companies indicating the general steps before and during the implementation. The proposed roadmaps and applied questionnaire/interview questions developed in this thesis will also be helpful to construction companies to scrutinize their own structure and performance levels and as a guide on how to pursuit improvements through the proposed implementation of the Lean Six Sigma methodology.

An Analytical Approach to Lean Six Sigma Deployment Strategies: Project Identification and Prioritization

abstract: The ever-changing economic landscape has forced many companies to re-examine their supply chains. Global resourcing and outsourcing of processes has been a strategy many organizations have adopted to reduce cost and to increase their global footprint. This has, however, resulted in increased process complexity and reduced customer satisfaction. In order to meet and exceed customer expectations, many companies are forced to improve quality and on-time delivery, and have looked towards Lean Six Sigma as an approach to enable process improvement. The Lean Six Sigma literature is rich in deployment strategies; however, there is a general lack of a mathematical approach to deploy Lean Six Sigma in a global enterprise. This includes both project identification and prioritization. The research presented here is two-fold. Firstly, a process characterization framework is presented to evaluate processes based on eight characteristics. An unsupervised learning technique, using clustering algorithms, is then utilized to group processes that are Lean Six Sigma conducive. The approach helps Lean Six Sigma deployment champions to identify key areas within the business to focus a Lean Six Sigma deployment. A case study is presented and 33% of the processes were found to be Lean Six Sigma conducive. Secondly, having identified parts of the business that are lean Six Sigma conducive, the next steps are to formulate and prioritize a portfolio of projects. Very often the deployment champion is faced with the decision of selecting a portfolio of Lean Six Sigma projects that meet multiple objectives which could include: maximizing productivity, customer satisfaction or return on investment, while meeting certain budgetary constraints. A multi-period 0-1 knapsack problem is presented that maximizes the expected net savings of the Lean Six Sigma portfolio over the life cycle of the deployment. Finally, a case study is presented that demonstrates the application of the model in a large multinational company. Traditionally, Lean Six Sigma found its roots in manufacturing. The research presented in this dissertation also emphasizes the applicability of the methodology to the non-manufacturing space. Continuous improvement in the performance of these platforms and the increasing demand for a variety of applications require a high competitiveness and, therefore, high levels of productivity and quality. In this scenario, agile methodologies are used and fit well to frequently changing requirements and to time to market. Among these methodologies, Scrum is one of the most accepted and used, contributing to the improvement of project management, team productivity, product quality and increasing the probability of project success. On the other hand, there is an increasing adoption of quality management methodologies such as Lean Six Sigma in Information Technology and Communication (ICT) organizations due to their proven results in improving processes development and quality of services and products developed. Methodologies such as Scrum and Lean Six Sigma have different goals, however, they can contribute together in the development of software for mobile devices. In literature, there are studies that propose the integration of agile methodologies and software quality, however, they have gaps regarding the possibility of systematic reuse of this integration, as well as in evaluating the use of these integrated methodologies. Thus, this paper proposes an evolution of an existing approach, called SLeSS, that integrates Scrum to Lean Six Sigma and has been used in the software customization for mobile phones. The evolution of this approach is to add software development in addition to customization and improve integration mechanisms initially proposed with a focus on evaluation of the practices and principles of Scrum from the use of techniques of Lean Six Sigma. This new version is applied in seven actual projects that are related to software development and customization for mobile devices and their results are also discussed in this dissertation. / O desenvolvimento de software para dispositivos móveis como smartphones, celulares e tablets requer conhecimento dos processos e das tecnologias relacionadas às plataformas de software e de hardware desses dispositivos. A melhoria contínua no desempenho dessas plataformas e a demanda crescente por uma variedade de aplicações impõem uma alta competitividade e, por conseguinte, exigem níveis elevados de produtividade e de qualidade dos projetos de desenvolvimento. Nesse cenário, as metodologias ágeis são utilizadas por se adequarem bem às frequentes mudanças de requisitos e às demandas de prazo desse nicho de mercado. Dentre essas metodologias, o Scrum é uma das mais aceitas e utilizadas, contribuindo na melhoria da gestão de projetos, na produtividade do time, na qualidade dos produtos e no aumento da probabilidade de sucesso dos projetos. Por outro lado, há uma crescente adoção de metodologias de gestão da qualidade como o Lean Six Sigma por organizações da área de Tecnologia da Informação e Comunicação (TIC) devido aos seus resultados comprovados na melhoria dos processos de desenvolvimento e da qualidade dos serviços e dos produtos desenvolvidos. Metodologias como o Scrum e o Lean Six Sigma possuem objetivos distintos, entretanto, elas podem contribuir juntas no desenvolvimento de software para dispositivos móveis. Na literatura existem trabalhos que propõem a integração de metodologias ágeis e de qualidade de software, entretanto, esses trabalhos possuem lacunas no que tange a possibilidade de reuso sistemático das mesmas bem como a avaliação do uso dessas metodologias integradas. Este trabalho propõe então uma evolução de uma abordagem já existente, denominada SLeSS, que integra o Scrum ao Lean Six Sigma e que foi utilizada na customização de software para celulares. Essa evolução visa ampliar a abordagem tanto para o desenvolvimento de software além da customização quanto para melhorar os mecanismos de integração inicialmente propostos com um foco na avaliação das práticas e princípios do Scrum a partir do uso de técnicas do Lean Six Sigma. Para avaliar a nova versão, ela é aplicada em sete projetos reais de desenvolvimento e customização de software para dispositivos móveis e seus resultados são também discutidos nesta dissertação.

Lean Sigma Applications to Service Departments in the Healthcare Industry

The Health Care System has struggled with many problems such as medical errors, poorly designed processes, waste, and customer dissatisfaction. The Lean Six Sigma methodology has been shown to be efficient in solving problems in the manufacturing industry and in services, as well. In this study, a framework for applying Lean Six Sigma to the health care industry is presented. The framework depicts a systematic methodology to solve problems typically found in this industry. A case study is also presented on how to apply this framework. The DMAIC Model has been conducted in an Imaging Department to identify the root causes of problems and to define a future state of the process

Application of Lean Six Sigma to Improve Service in Healthcare Facilities Management: A Case Study

abstract: The purpose of this paper is to present a case study on the application of the Lean Six Sigma (LSS) quality improvement methodology and tools to study the analysis and improvement of facilities management (FM) services at a healthcare organization. Research literature was reviewed concerning whether or not LSS has been applied in healthcare-based FM, but no such studies have been published. This paper aims to address the lack of an applicable methodology for LSS intervention within the context of healthcare-based FM. The Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control (DMAIC) framework was followed to test the hypothesis that LSS can improve the service provided by an FM department responsible for the maintenance and repair of furniture and finishes at a large healthcare organization in the southwest United States of America. Quality improvement curricula and resources offered by the case study organization equipped the FM department to apply LSS over the course of a five-month period. Qualitative data were gathered from pre- and post-intervention surveys while quantitative data were gathered with the Organization’s computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) software. Overall, LSS application proved to be useful for the intended purpose. The author proposes that application of LSS by other FM departments to improve their services could also be successful, which is noteworthy and deserving of continued research. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Construction 2017

Lean Six Sigma in healthcare: combating the military's escalating pharmacy costs

The cost of pharmacy operations and pharmaceuticals is growing at a rate that is alarmingly higher than that of the total cost of military healthcare itself. Recent congressional legislation has essentially given the Department of Defense the ultimatum to cut costs for beneficiaries wherever possible, or risk having benefits arbitrarily cut by Congress. In the face of this possibility, cutting costs through better business practices must be explored, particularly within the area of pharmacy operations. This project explores the potential cost savings that can be realized by implementing Lean Six Sigma (LSS) methodology in the pharmacy operations of the DoD Medical Treatment Facilities (MTF). This research proves that implementing Lean Six Sigma methodology will improve military pharmacy operations, often at little cost, while realizing significant savings and increased customer satisfaction.

The aim of this work is a detailed introduction to the theory of Lean six sigma management tool and verify its efficacy in practice on the individual case. Process to be improved in this work is recovery of overdue debts on english market of certain international company. Of the possible tools Lean six sigma methodologies were chosen the most suitable for a particular process and main causes of large amounts of overdue recievables were identified. As the best steps to improve the process were indentified sending statements of account to customers, improve communication quality and appealing for compliance maturity according to the rules of English banking system. With the methodology we achieved improvement on Sigma parametr on the researched process.

The master´s thesis deals with the company engaged in providing services in IT. The main aim of the thesis is to map selected logistics chain of company and to use selected techniques of Lean Six Sigma for optimizing it. The first part of the thesis deals with the current situation on the market reverse logistics associated with electronics and legislative requirements for the supplying of warranty claims. The theoretical part introduces concepts of lean manufacturing and tools for the process mapping. The practical part has a goal with tools DMAIC to shorten the lead time of repair, to find waste and downtime it the service process, which have affect on the customers satisfaction.
