The social life of British organic biodynamic wheat : biopolitics, biopower and governance

Outhwaite, Samantha January 2017 (has links)
This thesis unpacks the social life of an alternative food "thing". It is empirically grounded in an intensive ethnography and draws on the conceptual resources of Actor-Network Theory (ANT) to narrate alterity as it is manifest in an alternative food network (AFN). Following and tracing British Organic Biodynamic (BOB) wheat, the research weaves through the seed (from breeding to certification), the grain crop's cultivation, harvest and milling, and the final transformations from flour to real bread and its consumption. The storying of the BOB wheat's social life, its social relations and subsequent transformations reveals a persistent blurring of formal distinctions separating 'nature' and 'culture', humans and nonhumans, and production and consumption. Most importantly, it disrupts the traditional categorization of food networks as either 'conventional' or 'alternative'. The analysis of the BOB wheat's social life betrays the imagined purity of alterity of this supposed alternative food network, unveiling a heterogeneous web of hybrid actants and multiple performances of wheats. The analysis reveals a conflict within the BOB wheat network, by demonstrating how performances that are presented as deeply incommensurable are nevertheless inextricably and intimately connected. Consequently, 'conventional', and some 'more-than-conventional', performances threaten to undermine the BOB wheat networks' legitimacy as an AFN. Further, they intimate an ontological impurity that threatens the very possibility of alterity. Accordingly, my analysis narrates the BOB wheat network's efforts to stabilize alterity and expand the collective, through the purification of these incommensurable versions of the wheat. Ultimately, this process of purification works to persistently reconstitute modern ontological binaries, specifically the alternative-convention bifurcations of food networks. To conclude I suggest that this purification, the making and manifesting of alterity, is woven through the contemporary biopolitical dispositive - persistently circulating and remaking, Modern ontological framings of reality as well as the moral and ethical values therein.

Cama-de-gato / Cama-de-gato

Fernanda Morais Monteiro Carneiro 29 October 2010 (has links)
Cats cradle is an enterprise that conjugates multiple semiosis for the purpose of investigating the being of thought here understood as the body that thinks from the contact with other pre-existent thoughts. By the intersection of concepts, image, method and sonority, it is intended to build a stretching Field in order to outbreak new sensibilities. All poetic operations that constitute the dissertation, the vídeo and other graphic pieces of Cats cradle, were guided by the lines that abound from the problematization of the being of thought: its expressivity, its insistense on differentiation, its capacity to articulate a myriad of temporal relations, to evade present, to enter into chaos and extract from there the unfamiliar. So it is a trap for repetition and way to resist the return oh the same by the affirmation of the different and by perverting the establishment; it is a gesture that triggers a permanent state of revolution that plays with the singularities to settle new angles os perception. Since it is impossible to separate the physical portion of a work of art from its mental creative process, it is going to be listed also some of the technical and material procedures used to compose the vídeo Cats cradle and the series of unfolded works. Finally, it Will be presented concise notes about the creative and the conceptual routes which permitted the consolidation of this dissertion.

Estudo da multiplicidade de partículas carregadas em colisões centrais Pb+Pb a SNN = 2.76 TeV no experimento ATLAS / Study of central collision charged particle multiplicity in Pb-Pb collisions at SNN=2,76 TeV on atlas experiment

Navarro, Jose Luis La Rosa 07 November 2012 (has links)
From the global observables that allows the characterization of the heavy ion collisions at relativistic energies, the particle multiplicity is one of the most fundamental observables, directly related to the energy density of the collision. There will be presented results about the study of central collision charged particle multiplicity in Pb - Pb collisions at the 2.76 TeV center of mass energy using the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The particle multiplicity is measured using two different methods in the || < 2:5 rapidity interval, deploying the ATLAS inner tracker semiconductor system. The event selection plays a crucial role in this analysis and is applied on data acquired using a minimum bias trigger. Imposing the condition of coincidence between the two Zero Degree Calorimeters (ZDC) arms (|| > 8.3) and the coincidence of the Minimum Bias Trigger Scintillator (MBTS) detector (2.1 < || <3.8) the electromagnetic dissociation events are removed from the sample. For this work, events produced by the HIJING event generator were also analyzed and the simulated data was reconstructed using the same algorithms used on data. The multiplicities and inclusive particle density measured for most central collisions are in good agreement with the ones measured by other experiments.

Multiplicity Results of Periodic Solutions for Two Classes of Nonlinear Problems

Hata, Kazuya 01 May 2014 (has links)
We investigate the existences and qualitative properties of periodic solutions of the following two classes of nonlinear differential equations: I) (Special) Relativistic Pendulum Equations (RPEs); II) (2-coupled) Gross-Pitaevskii Equations (GPEs). The pendulum equation describes the motion of a pendulum. According to Special Relativity, which was published by A. Einstein in 1905, causality is more fundamental than constant time-space, thus time will ow slower and space will distort to keep causality if the speed of motion is near the speed of light. In such high speed situations, the pendulum equation needs to be revised due to Special Relativity. The revised equation is called RPE. Our result answers some open questions about the existence of multiple periodic solutions for RPEs. GPEs are sometimes called coupled nonlinear schrodinger equations. the Schrodinger equation is the fundamental equation of Quantum Mechanics which is the \exotic" probabilistic fundamental physics law of the \micro" world { the world of atoms and molecules. A well-known physicist and Nobel laureate, R. Feynman, said \I think I can safely say that nobody understands quantum mechanics." which indicates the physical/ philosophical difficulty of interpretations. It raises paradoxical problems such the well-known Schrodinger's Cat. Setting aside these difficult, if we combine Special Relativity and Quantum Mechanics as a many-body system, then we have Quantum Field Theory (QFT) which is more deterministic, and governs even elementary particle physics. GPEs are also related to QFT. For example, superconductivity and Bose Einstein Condensates (BEC). These phenomena in condensed matter physics can be thought of as the emergence of the mysterious micro world physics at \macro" level. We study these equations from the viewpoint of mathematical interest. It is generally difficult to solve nonlinear differential equations. It is also generally difficult even to prove the existence of solutions. Although we show there exist solutions, we still do not know how to solve the differential equations analytically. Variational Methods (or Calculus of Variations) are useful tools to show there exist solutions of differential equations. The idea is to convert the problem of solving equations into the problem of finding critical points (i.e. minimum/maximum points or saddle points) of a functional, and each critical point can generally correspond to a weak solution. However, it is also generally difficult to find out such critical points because we look for critical points in an infinite-dimensional functions space. Thus many advanced mathematical theories or tools have been developed and used for decades in nonlinear analysis. We use some topological theories. From information of the functional's shape, these theories deduce if there exists a critical point, or how many critical points exist. The key of these theories is to use the symmetry of the equations. We also investigate bifurcation structures for II), i.e. the connection structures between the solutions. By linearizations which look at the equations \locally," we reduce the problem in the infinite dimension to one in a finite dimension. Furthermore, it allows us to apply Morse Theory, which connects between local and global aspects of the functional's information. In several cases, we show that there are infinitely many bifurcation points that give rise to global bifurcation branches.

[en] FOR A METAPSYCHOLOGY OF THE TIME / [pt] POR UMA METAPSICOLOGIA DO TEMPO

LARISSA DA COSTA MENDES 30 May 2012 (has links)
[en] This study aims to investigate the different temporalities of psychoanalysis based on three priority themes which support many of the freudian concepts. Among the temporal dimensions of psychoanalytic theory, we choose to highlight essentially the notion of mythic time, the a posteriori and the timelessness from the unconscious. The approaches that are discussed in this work do not extinguish the times of Freud, nor even seek a conceptual closure around the issue, but pursue – with a partnership with Deleuze s philosophy – to identify important temporal axes in the psychoanalytic field that opens itself for a plural perspective of the time.

Masas and Bimodule Decompositions of II_1 Factors

Mukherjee, Kunal K. 2009 August 1900 (has links)
The measure-multiplicity-invariant for masas in II_1 factors was introduced by Dykema, Smith and Sinclair to distinguish masas that have the same Pukanszky invariant. In this dissertation, the measure class (left-right-measure) in the measuremultiplicity- invariant is studied, which equivalent to studying the structure of the standard Hilbert space as an associated bimodule. The focal point of this analysis is: To what extent the associated bimodule remembers properties of the masa. The structure of normaliser of any masa is characterized depending on this measure class, by using Baire category methods (Selection principle of Jankov and von Neumann). Measure theoretic proofs of Chifan's normaliser formula and the equivalence of weak asymptotic homomorphism property (WAHP) and singularity is presented. Stronger notions of singularity is also investigated. Analytical conditions based on Fourier coefficients of certain measures are discussed, that partially characterize strongly mixing masas and masas with nontrivial centralizing sequences. The analysis also provide conditions in terms of operators and L2 vectors that characterize masas whose left-right-measure belongs to the class of product measure. An example of a simple masa in the hyperfinite II1 factor whose left-right-measure is the class of product measure is exhibited. An example of a masa in the hyperfinite II1 factor whose leftright- measure is singular to the product measure is also presented. Unitary conjugacy of masas is studied by providing examples of non unitary conjugate masas. Finally, it is shown that for k greater than/equal to 2 and for each subset S \subseteq N, there exist uncountably many non conjugate singular masas in L(Fk) whose Pukanszky invariant is S u {1}.

Resolving Multiplicities in the Tensor Product of Irreducible Representations of Semisimple Lie Algebras

Brooke, David John 20 January 2009 (has links)
When the tensor product of two irreducible representations contains multiple copies of some of its irreducible constituents, there is a problem of choosing specific copies: resolving the multiplicity. This is typically accomplished by some ad hoc method chosen primarily for convenience in labelling and calculations. This thesis addresses the possibility of making choices according to other criteria. One possible criterion is to choose copies for which the Clebsch-Gordan coefficients have a simple form. A method fulfilling this is introduced for the tensor product of three irreps of $su(2)$. This method is then extended to the tensor product of two irreps of $su(3)$. In both cases the method is shown to construct a full nested sequence of basis independent highest weight subspaces. Another possible criterion is to make choices which are intrinsic, independent of all choices of bases. This is investigated in the final part of the thesis with a basis independent method that applies to the tensor product of finite dimensional irreps of any semisimple Lie algebra over $\mathbb{C}$.
