Resolving Multiplicities in the Tensor Product of Irreducible Representations of Semisimple Lie Algebras

Brooke, David John 20 January 2009 (has links)
When the tensor product of two irreducible representations contains multiple copies of some of its irreducible constituents, there is a problem of choosing specific copies: resolving the multiplicity. This is typically accomplished by some ad hoc method chosen primarily for convenience in labelling and calculations. This thesis addresses the possibility of making choices according to other criteria. One possible criterion is to choose copies for which the Clebsch-Gordan coefficients have a simple form. A method fulfilling this is introduced for the tensor product of three irreps of $su(2)$. This method is then extended to the tensor product of two irreps of $su(3)$. In both cases the method is shown to construct a full nested sequence of basis independent highest weight subspaces. Another possible criterion is to make choices which are intrinsic, independent of all choices of bases. This is investigated in the final part of the thesis with a basis independent method that applies to the tensor product of finite dimensional irreps of any semisimple Lie algebra over $\mathbb{C}$.

Quantitative NDA Measurements of Advanced Reprocessing Product Materials Containing U, NP, PU, and AM

Goddard, Braden 03 October 2013 (has links)
The ability of inspection agencies and facility operators to measure powders containing several actinides is increasingly necessary as new reprocessing techniques and fuel forms are being developed. These powders are difficult to measure with nondestructive assay (NDA) techniques because neutrons emitted from induced and spontaneous fission of different nuclides are very similar. A neutron multiplicity technique based on first principle methods was developed to measure these powders by exploiting isotope-specific nuclear properties, such as the energy-dependent fission cross sections and the neutron induced fission neutron multiplicity. This technique was tested through extensive simulations using the Monte Carlo N-Particle eXtended (MCNPX) code and by one measurement campaign using the Active Well Coincidence Counter (AWCC) and two measurement campaigns using the Epithermal Neutron Multiplicity Counter (ENMC) with various (α,n) sources and actinide materials. Four potential applications of this first principle technique have been identified: (1) quantitative measurement of uranium, neptunium, plutonium, and americium materials; (2) quantitative measurement of mixed oxide (MOX) materials; (3) quantitative measurement of uranium materials; and (4) weapons verification in arms control agreements. This technique still has several challenges which need to be overcome, the largest of these being the challenge of having high-precision active and passive measurements to produce results with acceptably small uncertainties.

Estudo da multiplicidade de partículas carregadas em colisões centrais Pb+Pb a SNN = 2.76 TeV no experimento ATLAS / Study of central collision charged particle multiplicity in Pb-Pb collisions at SNN=2,76 TeV on atlas experiment

Jose Luis La Rosa Navarro 07 November 2012 (has links)
From the global observables that allows the characterization of the heavy ion collisions at relativistic energies, the particle multiplicity is one of the most fundamental observables, directly related to the energy density of the collision. There will be presented results about the study of central collision charged particle multiplicity in Pb - Pb collisions at the 2.76 TeV center of mass energy using the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The particle multiplicity is measured using two different methods in the || < 2:5 rapidity interval, deploying the ATLAS inner tracker semiconductor system. The event selection plays a crucial role in this analysis and is applied on data acquired using a minimum bias trigger. Imposing the condition of coincidence between the two Zero Degree Calorimeters (ZDC) arms (|| > 8.3) and the coincidence of the Minimum Bias Trigger Scintillator (MBTS) detector (2.1 < || <3.8) the electromagnetic dissociation events are removed from the sample. For this work, events produced by the HIJING event generator were also analyzed and the simulated data was reconstructed using the same algorithms used on data. The multiplicities and inclusive particle density measured for most central collisions are in good agreement with the ones measured by other experiments.

The evolution of the figure of Salome in French literature of the twentieth century

Tian, Nina 05 March 2014 (has links)
As a secondary character from the Gospel story that recounts the martyrdom of John the Baptist, Salome became one of the favorite themes in art and literature of the second half of the nineteenth century. As one of the “ femmes fatales ”, this figure corresponds to the Fin de Siècle imagination : the man’s weakness , the women’s power, the refined aesthetic but morbid, the decadence mixed with an irremediable terror. The famous play of Oscar Wilde made her the subject of a philosophical reflection of the desire and the death. The end of the nineteenth century doesn’t mean the end of the evolution of this mythic figure. On the contrary, it becomes a new starting point. In the twentieth century, Salome’s story has been enriched not only at the structural level, but also by a formal diversification. Today, the writings about Salome form a system. The formation and transformation of this system requires an observation that pays particular attention to the continuity and rupture, to the inheritance and reversal. When the dancer is compared to the martyr, the Salome’s story has to face a series of contrast : man and woman, word and vision, asceticism and desire ... The uncertainty and the diversity of interpretation allow the story of Salome to resist the passage of time. A multitude of texts on the same myth creates a space where the intertextual study is possible.

Is multiplicity universal? : a study of multiplicity in the young moving groups

Elliott, Paul Michael January 2016 (has links)
The young moving groups are collections of nearby (<200 pc), young (5-150 Myr) pre-main sequence stars; these stars offer us one of the best opportunities to characterise stellar multiplicity, sub-stellar phenomena, disc evolution and planet formation. Here we present results from a series of multiplicity studies aimed at producing comprehensive multiplicity statistics of the young moving groups. The aim was to compare the derived statistics of the young moving groups to other populations in order to investigate whether the abundance and properties of multiple systems are environment independent. We have combined high-resolution spectroscopy, AO-imaging and direct imaging to identify and characterise multiple systems across a huge range of orbital periods (1- 10e10 day). The observational techniques also allow us to constrain the abundance of multiple systems in these populations by calculating detection limits. We found many similarities (frequency of spectroscopic binaries; frequency, mass-ratio and physical separation of visual binaries) between the young moving groups and both younger and older regions, for multiple systems with physical separations smaller than 1000 au. We did, however, identify a significant number of new wide (>1000 au) companions. We reconciled the apparent excess of wide binary systems, when compared to the field population, by arguing that the wide systems are weakly bound and most likely decaying. By comparing the multiplicity statistics in one particular moving group we showed that the dynamical evolution of non-hierarchical protostars could lead to the population of wide binaries we can observe today. Our results indicate that the majority of low-mass stars form in small groups with 3 or 4 components that undergo significant dynamical evolution. The multiplicity properties of the young nearby moving groups are statistically similar to many other populations, supporting the environment-independent formation of multiple systems.

La clinique de la multiplicité : de la complexité identitaire à la redéfinition symbolique de l'acte de naissance : greffe, adoption et héritage / The Clinic of Multiplicity : from identity complex to the symbolic redefinition of birth : transplant, adoption and inheritance

De Timmerman, Nathalie 07 July 2016 (has links)
Experience with migrant families and their adolescents in distress regarding their identity we receive in our setting: “La Clinique de la Multiplicité”, encourage us to open the issue of transplantation, of adoption and psychic inheritance. Adoption, thought as the culmination of a reciprocal process off recognition, led as to question the organization of the familiar/foreign relationship between the adolescent, the child and his parents.Questionning the psychic prehistory and the affiliations of both parents and adolescents / children, enables to reveal the source elements, the significant elements of identity as a result of , transmission, which inscribe the patient within links and affiliations. It allows, as well treatment of the remains; these remains that trouble the patient, pushing him towards dissociation and destructiveness. It also highlights what is lacking, what has hampered this process. This work of psychic archaeology can enable to constitute or to restore an inner membrane, an interface which absorbs, filters and transforms the elements issued from the exchange between the outside and inside ; between the child and his parents; a composition of information that fits together, that binds manufacturing the multiplicité, a functional multiplicité that enriches the identity. The metaphor of the transplantation, of the rejection of a foreign transplant will enable us to consider the concept of the psychic transplantation in order to redefine the process of adoption, of reciprocal recognition and inheritance; a process that exceeds the transmission process. Indeed, beyond being “son of”, the question of becoming heir is here relevant for these adolescents in suffering, a question that could facilitate the symbolic redefinition of their birth certificate.
