OperaTunity: Opera Education for the Community

January 2016 (has links)
abstract: Opera education is a relatively new addition to opera companies in the United States, introducing children and adults to opera and spreading the message that operas are dramatic stories told through music. This paper focuses on the opera education group OperaTunity and its relationship with the company Arizona Opera, which is based in Phoenix and Tucson, Arizona. The majority of the paper consists of a history of Arizona Opera, the establishment of its Opera Education Department, and the inception and activities of OperaTunity. The information in this account comes from interviews with personnel involved with OperaTunity and from documents pertinent to the program. This study also examines the reception and success of the group in Arizona and includes examples of educational materials to provide to teachers who are introducing children and adults to opera. This account of the history and activities of OperaTunity is intended to aid future educators and opera companies in developing opera education programs. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Music 2016

Playing on Stage: The Evolution of Child Roles in Opera

January 2017 (has links)
abstract: While opera often portrays young heroes and heroines in love, only recently have children taken center stage as principal characters in opera. This paper outlines the evolution of child characters in the standard opera repertoire, beginning with the famous trouser roles of Cherubino from Le nozze di Figaro, Siébel from Faust, Stéphano from Roméo et Juliette, Octavian from Der Rosenkavalier, and Hänsel from Hänsel und Gretel, and ending with principal child roles written for boys (Amahl from Amahl and the Night Visitors and Miles from The Turn of the Screw). Examination of the history of childhood and the casting of children in opera reveals that the two are closely related; as children gained more legislative protection against child abuse and labor, children also appeared more frequently in opera. The evolution of children in opera culminates in the mid-twentieth century, when children perform principal roles in operas like Amahl and the Night Visitors (1951) and The Turn of the Screw (1954). The study of trouser roles and roles for children in opera also reveals the heteronormativity and misogyny that is deeply engrained in the art form. While trouser roles might have reached popularity because of the vocal aesthetic created earlier by castrati, it is possible that heterosexual composers, librettists and audience members may have wanted to objectify the women playing those roles. Although trouser roles may have also been conceived as a way to create vocal or comedic variety, the strength of these roles has been their openness to multiple interpretations. The primary advancements for children in opera are entwined with this ambiguous history of trouser roles, as this paper will show. These milestones only seem to occur for boys instead of girls; for the most part, if a girl character appears in opera, she is portrayed by an adult woman. This paper will also discuss heteronormativity and misogyny in opera while following the evolution of child roles and child actors in the art form. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Music 2017

Domínguez Mosciatti, Fabrizio January 2017 (has links)

Uma Reflexão do Islã na Mídia Brasileira: Televisão e Mundo Muçulmano, 2001-2002 / A reflection of Islam in the Brazilian media: television and Muslim world, 2001-2002

Cesar Henrique de Queiroz Porto 08 November 2012 (has links)
This thesis is based in a study of representations of Islam, Arabs and muslins broadcast by the soap opera O Clone (The Clone). Its primary goal is to verify how the soap opera carried the Islamic culture to the post 9/11 television. Using as a primary source the discourse present in the soap opera, we concluded that O Clone has worked as a didactic instrument for the audiences, offering information from the Islamic culture and religion in a moment in which such cultural tradition was quite stigmatized. The soap opera, despite the reuse of some caricature and generalization derived, foremost, from its feuilletonistic-melodramatic nature, managed to offer positive representations enabling a more humanized reading of the muslim Other. We conclude, as well, that O Clone has brought to television elements that are present in the contemporary context and pervade the Eastern Islamic relations with the modern world and the West. We could also identify that Gloria Perezs electronic feuilleton made use of the intertextual asset by leading representations, ideas and images already settled in the orientalist literary tradition derived from the The Thousand and One Nights and its adaptations and revisions. Through the primacy of orientality, a pile of canonic images about the East, made possible a fast identification of the public with a ancient imaginary, previously settled and very familiar to a population that watches TV.

Respecting Tradition: A Practical Exercise Using Theatrical Stage Lighting to Enhance a Work from Traditional Beijing Opera

Zhang, Jingwei January 2014 (has links)
During the early 20th century, artists associated with Beijing Opera reformed various elements of the performance to reflect contemporary events. Attempts at reform were deemed unsuccessful since most traditional components of the Beijing Opera were obscured. This thesis explores the use of theatrical stage lighting with specific emphasis on the use of stage lighting to support the aspects of time, space, and mood which are inherent in the performance. The ultimate objective is to do this without destroying the original performance style associated with Beijing Opera. The practical component of this thesis is based on the McCandless method of stage lighting and the application of this method to the lighting design created for Murder of a Concubine, a traditional piece of repertory of the Beijing Opera. The culminating performance was presented on December 1st, 2013 on the Academic Hall stage in the Department of Theatre of the University of Ottawa.

The evolution of theatrical decoration on the stages of the Opera and the Opéra-Comique between 1914 and 1936

Bellot, Alexandra 18 December 2018 (has links)
Multidisciplinary object of study, the theatrical decoration is an ephemeral art that vibrates only in the spotlight. At the beginning of the 20th century, the role of the visual element is considerably enhanced on stage. In a Parisian artistic context characterized by the variety of forms of expression, the multitude of influences from abroad, and the questions surrounding the possible relationships between the arts; a new approach to the stage is emerging and another look is being taken at the design of shows and the creation of their constituent elements such as sets and costumes. These new considerations around the aesthetics of the stage space lead to new theories and trends in theatrical decoration. Focused on Parisian opera houses, our study offers a better understanding of the process of the renovation of theatrical decoration on stages of Opéra and Opéra-Comique in the first half of the 20th century. Showcases of French art, the two theatres have, since their creation, maintained special relationships between rivalry and complementarity. Our thesis sheds new light on theatrical decoration designed for early 20th century lyrical shows by proposing to precisely define the positioning of the Opéra and the Opéra-Comique. By analysing the confrontation between traditionalism subjected to the two theatres and the new aspirations of the world of theatre, our study first explores the beginnings of a renewal of the stage set and highlights the main actors of the movement. The systematic use of professional decorators, heirs of the dynasties of the late 19th century and the trompe-l'oeil technique were gradually abandoned by opera houses. As a result, new collaborators from the world of theatre, most of whom are painters, are at the heart of the creation of the shows. Our thesis opens the field of study and examines the impact of artistic movements from abroad. In a French capital, the headquarters of an international artistic unrest, influences and collaborations with foreign artists are also at stake in the art of stage set design. The 1920s theatre world was marked by the influence of the Ballets russes and the set designers fully grasped the model by adapting it to French creations and tastes. The directors of the Opéra de l'Opéra-Comique shake up the decorative routine of their theatre by surrounding themselves with artists capable of offering an alternative conception of the opera set by creating a setting that is conducive to the development of a new imagination. More favourable to innovative experiences, ballet set design offers great flexibility to its creators. By approaching the question of the renewal of ballet set design at the Opera and the Opéra-Comique, our thesis reveals their direction and examines their transformation into a pole of creation and choreographic modernity. The question of taste is at the heart of the last part of our study by first revealing the reactions of opera houses to the success of cinema. The directors of the theatres seize its technical resources in order to modernize the staging and enrich existing processes. By focusing on the scenographic role that light can play and the character of film projection, theatres offer another conception of theatrical decoration in which the painted canvas is no more exclusive. By questioning the evolution of French taste, our thesis offers a view on the relationship between the decorative and performing arts and highlights the work for the stage of the artists who condition the French taste of the 1920s and 1930s. Finally, the study of the sets of the 1930s shows identifies the harmony and limits between the public's taste and the aesthetic aspirations of the time.

Uniting Commedia Dell’arte Traditions with the Spieltenor Repertoire

Trahan, Corey 05 1900 (has links)
Sixteenth century commedia dell’arte actors relied on gaudy costumes, physical humor and improvisation to entertain audiences. the Spieltenor in the modern operatic repertoire has a similar comedic role. Would today’s Spieltenor benefit from consulting the commedia dell’arte’s traditions? to answer this question, I examine the commedia dell’arte’s history, stock characters and performance traditions of early troupes. the Spieltenor is discussed in terms of vocal pedagogy and the fach system. I reference critical studies of the commedia dell’arte, sources on improvisatory acting, articles on theatrical masks and costuming, the commedia dell’arte as depicted by visual artists, commedia dell’arte techniques of movement, stances and postures. in addition, I cite vocal pedagogy articles, operatic repertoire and sources on the fach system. My findings suggest that a valid relationship exists between the commedia dell’arte stock characters and the Spieltenor roles in the operatic repertoire. I present five case studies, pairing five stock characters with five Spieltenor roles. Suggestions are provided to enhance the visual, physical and dramatic elements of each role’s performance. I conclude that linking a commedia dell’arte stock character to any Spieltenor role on the basis of shared traits offers an untapped resource to create distinctive characterizations based on theatrical traditions.

Opera Stockholm, Årstafältet

Aravena, Maria-Loreto January 2013 (has links)
The existing park gets new life through land planning changes and a large transparent building is supplied - The Opera! The Opera extends throughout the landscape where it forms a large park with various public spaces. The park attracts people to the Opera by its movements that provide a rhythm and lead them to the different places the building and landscape has to offer. The idea is to combine a park with a grand building, without losing the elegance and grandeur as an opera is identified with. I let the building stretch out so that it can reach all corners of the park, invite people in the vincinity to venture and experience the Opera. From above, under and inside it.
