Thus, currently, companies are aimed to deliver orders to their respective customers on time, in good condition and complete. This file focuses on the importance of warehouse management for mass consumption distributors, since it's the warehouses that determine the operation and productivity costs of these. Thus, some innovative techniques such as the lean warehouse and allocation tools improve working conditions with the aim of reducing downtime and distances. A pilot programme of implementation of the tools mentioned in the warehouse of a wholesale distributor was carried out. As a result of the research, the distance traveled in the warehouse was reduced by 22%, the reduction of times in the picking process, achieving the optimal delivery time and generating an increase in the sales made of 215,720.22 soles. These results prove to be decisive in the performance of the supply chain (inventory, cost, delay and risk), since the key to success for this industry is to satisfy the needs of customers in the shortest possible time.

Background: With the exponential expansion of E-commerce, rising labor cost and higher customer expectations have pushed the implementation of advanced automation technology in warehouses. The order-picking-process is considered to be the most labor intensive and most expensive labor cost in warehouses. It has a crucial part to determine the lead time and customer satisfaction and because it is the last procedure before the order is shipped it can have negative effects on delivery quality, future customer relations and the overall satisfaction. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to evaluate how automation can help in the order picking process by studying the companies Shelfless and Exsitec to understand its effect on efficiency, cost and to understand the barriers and motivations to implementing it. Method: This paper is based on a qualitative interview study with a deductive approach. The analysis method is based on within case analysis and cross-case analysis. Within case analysis is used to develop an understanding of each company to then later use a cross-case analysis to examine the difference between the two companies. Conclusion: The conclusion is that automation in the order picking process can increase the productivity whilst lowering the cost at the expense of a high installation fee with some disadvantages during the installation process like lower productivity, less flexibility. Although in the long run automation will be necessary to keep up with the growth of the companies.

The goal of this study was to find factors affecting the pickers productivity negatively, in the order picking process, and to suggest a change that can increase the pickers productivity. By a qualitative approach the initial situation at PostNord was studied. The obtained results, after analyzing the initial situation, showed various factors that affect the pickers productivity negatively. All these contributed to waste, meaning that the picker did not use its time correctly according to Lean theory. These factors were analyzed and categorized into four problem areas, which are quality of tools, standardization of routines and leadership, article placement and jam in the corridors. Possible suggestions to improve the situation can be done with smaller or bigger changes. One solution is to improve the work procedures by standardizing the methods, which could be done by cooperating more with PEMA and using the pickers knowledge. Some suggestions and adjacent activities must be investigated further to find the best solutions.

the arrival of goods at retail and end users, mediating the production of industrial
plants and are the core of various logistics processes. Its efficient management
is crucial to the smooth running supply chain. In many distribution centers, the
layout of the positioning of its products does not meet adequately their internal
processes to split stock split (picking). In this work, the objective is to identify the
shortcomings of stock picking organization to reduce It is the distance traveled in
the separation of applications on a CD. The concepts of ABC curve and
partnership mechanisms between products in order to prepare new layouts that
favor the improvement of picking are used in order to reduce the distance traveled
by the separator, and thereby increasing process productivity. As a result, it was
observed that the proposed layout based on the association between products
present in common requests presented a smaller distance in picking. / Os centros de distribuição (CD) vêm desempenhando um papel importante na
cadeia de suprimentos, garantindo a chegada dos produtos ao varejo e aos
usuários finais, intermediando a produção das plantas industriais e sendo o
núcleo de vários processos logísticos. Sua gestão eficiente é fundamental para
o bom andamento da cadeia de suprimentos. Em muitos centros de distribuição,
o layout do posicionamento de seus produtos não atende de forma adequada os
seus processos internos de separação de estoque fracionado (picking). Neste
trabalho, objetiva-se identificar as deficiências da organização do estoque de
picking a fim de reduzir-se a distância percorrida na separação dos pedidos em
um CD. São utilizados os conceitos da curva ABC e mecanismos de associação
entre produtos nos pedidos para a elaboração de novos layouts que favoreçam
a melhoria do picking, visando a redução da distância percorrida pelo separador,
e consequentemente, aumentando a produtividade do processo. Como
resultado, foi possível observar que o layout proposto baseado na associação
entre produtos presentes em pedidos comuns apresentou uma menor distância
percorrida no picking.

We examine the influence of station layout, storage policy, picking policy and sorting solution on order picking system performance. On each of the analysis we consider a few solutions. We determine influence of different number of station in raw on picking system performance. We design the replenishment system supported by kanban philosophy with implemented economical order quantity (EOQ) and reorder point (ROP). The picking system is designed for assumed product’s demand values. The assessment of each of the solution is done through Arena simulation model. The results show that properly designed station with reasonable storage policy and implemented batching policy brings significant raise in order picking system productivity. In addition, we found that proper sortation system logic allows for more equal workload and reduction of maximum queue lengths. The results offer solutions to managers looking to implement improvements in order picking systems.</p>

Previous issue date: 2012-03-13 / The companies included in a globalized environment, so as to ensure their competitiveness and profitability, are seeking to implement operational excellence programs that aim at customer satisfaction (service level achieved at a fair price) and its employees. The lean philosophy has been pervasive in all sectors, and in the entire chain of value stream, as a means of getting to win this excellence and differentiate themselves in the international market. The distribution centers, and specifically the activity of picking, present themselves as a key point in this chain when considering improvements, since depending on the type of distribution center, the cost of labor associated with picking coul be significative. Coupled with the cost, the time of this activity substantially affects the cycle time of application, ie, the time between receiving a customer order and correct delivery of products. This study therefore aims to contribute to the understanding of the gains that can be obtained with the use of tools and concepts of "Lean thinking" implemented in picking procedure in a distribution center. To this are presented two proposals to do the picking process. The proposals built based on concepts of lean tools are simulated using the Simio, simulation software , and compared with the current process. The analysis of simulation results helped to find out what the procedure for picking has the best performance and satisfies customer requirements. / As empresas inseridas em um ambiente globalizado, visando garantir sua competitividade e lucratividade, buscam implementar programas de excelência operacional que tenham como objetivo a satisfação do cliente (nível de serviço alcançado a um preço justo) e de seus colaboradores. A filosofia Lean tem sido difundida em todos os setores e em toda cadeia de fluxo de valor, como meio de conseguir ganhar esta excelência e diferenciar-se no mercado internacional. Os centros de distribuição, e especificamente a atividade de picking, se apresentam como um ponto-chave desta cadeia quando se pensa em melhoria. Pois, dependendo do tipo de centro de distribuição, o custo de mão-de-obra associado à atividade de picking é significativo. Aliado ao custo, o tempo dessa atividade influi de maneira substancial no tempo de ciclo de pedido, ou seja, o tempo entre o recebimento de um pedido do cliente e a entrega correta dos produtos. Este estudo pretende, portanto, contribuir para a compreensão dos ganhos que podem ser obtidos com a utilização de conceitos e ferramentas do pensamento Lean implementados em procedimentos de picking de um centro de distribuição. Para isto são apresentadas duas propostas para realizar o processo de picking. As propostas construídas baseadas em conceitos de ferramentas Lean, são simuladas com o software de simulação Simio e comparadas com o processo atual. A análise dos resultados da simulação contribuíram para encontrar qual o procedimento de picking apresenta melhor desempenho e satisfaz os requerimentos dos clientes.
