Interproximal reduction is a frequent orthodontic procedure in clinical practice, in which part of dental enamel in the interproximal area is removed. To perform safe interproximal reduction, it is important to estimate the actual enamel thickness. This study describes the enamel thickness in mesial and distal surfaces of both anterior and posterior teeth and evaluates possible correlations between the measurements obtained from maxillary and mandibular arches, from anterior and posterior regions, as well as mesial and distal surfaces. The sample comprised 34 young adults (21 females, 13 males) 13 to 24 years old. Periapical radiographs from right central and lateral incisors and canines, and bitewing radiographs from pre-molars and molars, from maxillary and mandibular arches, were digitalized and the data required for the research were calculated in the Image tool software. The analysis of data was made using Kolmorov-Smirnov test, Student T test and Pearson Correlation Coefficient and showed that averages of enamel thickness in proximal surfaces becomes progressively thicker distally, total enamel in posterior teeth was greater than anterior 5,36 mm for mandibular arch and 4,48 mm for maxillary. Enamel thickness was consistently greater on the distal surface than on the mesial. Total enamel in proximal surfaces was 14,87 mm for maxillary teeth and 14,78 mm for mandibular teeth. Positive correlation, statistically significant, was found between the enamel thickness of the mesial and distal surfaces, anterior and posterior teeth, as well as, to a large extent of the values obtained for teeth of mandibular and maxillary arches.

Elaboração de um guia de referência com imagens radiográficas para aplicação em exames extraorais odontológicos / Elaboration of a reference guide with radiograpich images for application in dental extraoral exams

Mickus, Joice 27 October 2017 (has links)
The radiological exams are important resources in aid of drafting a dental diagnosis. However, should only be performed when there is a real clinical indication, since the effects of ionizing radiation on the human body are cumulative. Flaws in the implementation of radiological procedures result in doubtful quality diagnostic images, being necessary, many times, the repetition of exams. In this way, methods to minimize radiological images rejection must be observed. In order to contribute to the reduction of errors of positioning and consequent rejection of imaging examinations in the area of dentistry, this study had as its objective the creation of a reference guide for application in dental extraoral examinations. For the preparation and structuring of this guide, a study was conducted with the aim of identifying the reasons for the rejection of panoramic radiographs in a digital dental radiology service. The study was retrospective and by means of a search in the software of image acquisition, were selected 2306 digital panoramic radiographs, corresponding to 10% of the total number of examinations performed between the years of 2013 and 2015. From the sample, were identified the rejected exams and the causes of rejection. To collaborate with the development of the reference guide, a questionnaire was applied at technical professionals working in the radiology sector where the research was conducted. The questionnaire was attended by nine questions related to routine work in the sector. With the results obtained in the study it was possible to do the preparation of the guide of reference with radiographic images for application in dental examinations.

Licks, Renata January 2007 (has links)
The aim of this study was to determine whether periapical radiograph can be used to identify patients with low bone mass. This goal was accomplished by combining trabecular morphologic analysis with radiographic density measurements as well as with clinical parameters. The study subject consisted of 60 postmenopausal women over forty years of age who were conducted to the Dental Radiology Service of UFRGS School of Dentistry during the year of 2006 to take a periapical radiograph of mandibular premolar and/or molar regions. Additionally, measurements of lumbar spine and proximal femur’s bone mineral density were obtained from these patients by dual-energy X-ray absortiometry, during the same period. The subjects were classified either as normal or with low bone mass according to their bone mineral density. Radiographic density measurements and fourteen morphologic features were obtained from each dental radiograph by the use of digital image processing software. The clinical variables considered were subject´s age and bone mass index (BMI). Classification and regression tree (CART) analysis was used to test the predictive power of clinical and radiographic risk factors to classify individual in either normal or low bone mass classes. CART analysis found that the most important variables for classifying subjects were age, number or terminal points/periphery, periphery/trabecular area, radiographic density and BMI. This study showed that the combination of clinical and radiography factors can identify individuals with low bone mineral density with higher accuracy than either one of the factor taken individually. As a consequence, dentists are able to pre-screen patients with abnormally high risk for developing osteoporosis through standard routine exams and conduct these patients to further medical evaluation whenever necessary.
