The Experience of Six Non-aboriginal Teachers Living and Working in Remote Aboriginal Communities During the 1990's

Whiting, Elizabeth, res.cand@acu.edu.au January 1999 (has links)
In Australia, non-Aboriginal people have been involved in Aboriginal education since the end of the 19th century. There has been ongoing criticism of non-Aboriginal involvement in Aboriginal education and a movement towards Aboriginalisation in education. This study addresses the issues faced by six non-Aboriginal teachers in remote Aboriginal communities in the 1990's. The purpose of this study is to explore the experiences and perceptions of non-Aboriginal teachers living and working in remote Aboriginal communities in the 1990's. Through this research I found that the non-Aboriginal teachers faced difficulties living and working in remote Aboriginal communities. They talked about the distinctive lifestyle and living conditions. They reported a need for pre-service and ongoing professional development focusing on aspects influencing their lives. The discussion topics included: their living circumstances; Aboriginal world view; Aboriginal health issues; community issues; Aboriginal teaching and learning styles and school policies. The study is consistent with previous research about non-Aboriginal teachers living and working in remote Aboriginal communities. It argues that pre-service and ongoing professional development is vital for the success of non-Aboriginal teacher in remote communities. Community based educational programs for non-Aboriginal teachers are needed. These programs should include non-Aboriginal teachers learning about Aboriginal culture, Aboriginal learning and teaching styles and the development and implementation of educational policies. These programmes need to include discussion of aspects of living in isolated settings. Schools and governing bodies involved need to develop closer liaison with non-Aboriginal teachers to support their living in this setting. It is also important that policies in place address the problem of the high turnover of non-Aboriginal staff experienced by remote community schools. This study also poses the question what is the future for non-Aboriginal teachers in remote Aboriginal communities? Aboriginalisation in remote Aboriginal communities is highly recommended.

This work proposes the Semantics Modelling for the construction of an ontology for the Remote Education dominion. It quests in Semantics an approach to represent the description and conceptualization of the EAD dominion, having as a starting point that it is necessary to model relationships among concepts with base in a capable approach of extending the relations network. Based on Lexical Semantics (CRUSE, 1986, 2000) and on the Frames? Semantics (FILLMORE, 1982), based on the Paradigmatic and Sintagmatic relations (SAEED, 2003; CALZOLARI et. al, 2010), considering relations of hiponomy, synomny, meromny, to establish taxonomy (class hierarchy) and thematic roles and frames for other kind of relations. Takins as corpus Moodle environment usage manuals, this study porposes the construction of and onthology having in sight a contribution on improving Learning Virtual Environments. The result of this investigaton points towards Frame Semantics as a possible approach on describing meanings in onthology.

Ramos, Adriana de Farias January 2009 (has links)
The purpose of this masters dissertation proposal is to present a study of the relations between the chemistry teachers epistemological conceptions and the mains presuppositions that provide the framework for the curricular matrix of the Chemistry Graduation Course at the Rede Gaúcha de Ensino Superior a Distância (REGESD) in the remote modality. The politics pedagogic project studied herein comprises an innovating proposal compared to the current model of chemistry teachers initial formation. Within its conceptions, it presents the idea that the teacher, when exercising their profession, should understand knowledge as an emancipator, built by students from their interaction with the social environment. From a qualitative approach, research data analysis follows a methodology with a phenomenological focus. It sets off from the presupposed that it is important to have a high level of convergence between the epistemological conception of those teachers and the course referentials for the proposed curriculum to be implemented adequately. Research results point to the existence of possible difficulties in the beginning of the Chemistry Graduation Course's implementation at REGESD Pedagogical Political Project in the remote modality due to the fact that the teachers' conceptions and the presuppositions that support the course do not converge sufficiently for the project to fully materialize. The majority of the interviewees showed a lack of knowledge of issues that range from educational legislation for EAD to issues of an epistemological nature, which are the highlights of the course project and concern the profile of the egress the course intends to form. Below are intervention proposals capable of supplanting such adversities: continuous and systematic formation of formators to account for qualified production of materials and good pedagogical actions; permanent articulation between the academic team; selection of tutors who commune with the course referentials; well structured hubs capable of meeting the course demands, among others.

Emergency Remote Teaching -Mathematics teachers and their challenges during the lock down imposed by Covid-19 restrictions

Toma, Nicoleta Natalia January 2021 (has links)
The covid-19 and the restrictions imposed by the lockdown affected educational institutions across the world and forced them to adopt a new way of teaching called emergency remoteteaching and learning. This master thesis focuses on challenges to teach mathematics remotely experienced bysecondary school teachers during this period. The data collection was conducted through semistructured interviews among secondary school mathematics teachers, active in the Covid-19lockdown. The collected data is analyzed and discussed from the theory of connectivismperspective and research findings are produced and structured based on the themes resultedfrom the literature review. The findings show that mathematics teachers encountered many challenges with the process of teaching especially due to the rapid transfer from traditionalclassroom teaching to online classes. Teachers’ knowledge and skills in using Information Communication Technology (ICT) tools are identified as main factors for a successful andeffective tuition in remote mathematics. The respondents see the opportunities in using ICT intheir teaching processes both from their perspective but also from the student perspective. The conclusions of this master thesis research show that use of ICT tools and platforms in teachingmathematics remotely is effective as extra tools and not as a complete and permanent substitutefor traditional classes. As a suggestion, remote teaching may be seen as a valuable alternativeif the actual pedagogical strategies are adapted, and ICT courses are introduced in the teacher’seducation. Yet, there are not enough studies to support this idea and the findings in this studyand more research could help to get a better understanding. The thesis offers suggestions forfurther research regarding remote mathematics teaching both from the challenges point of view but also in regard to the advantages remote teaching may imply.

Programmering På Distans: En Studie Kring Påtvingad Distansundervisning Under En Rådande Pandemi / Remote Programming: A Study About Forced Distance Learning During A Pandemic

Teurneau, Birger, Mlivić, Edvin January 2021 (has links)
The emergent situation regarding Covid-19 has had an effect on education globally. At the time of this study, the pandemic had been going on for about a year. The usual everyday life was nowhere to be seen.  The authors of this paper have experienced the radical changes and felt the need to investigate the remote education of programming. To shed some light on the positive outcomes and to find possibilities for further improvements, the authors want to relay the successful and unsuccessful aspects. The paper contains a thorough thematic analysis of the conducted qualitative interviews. In the study, stories, experiences and feelings from the students and teachers from the information architect programme at Malmö University have been the main part of the data collected.  Though the grades didn’t show any noticeable differences in comparison to the last few years, the pandemic seems to have had a major impact in many areas. The teachers have witnessed an increasing gap between high performing students and low performing students. It is believed that this may be caused by the low performing students' tendency not to seek help when they need it the most. While the high performing students seem to have gotten better at searching for information by themself.

THE COLLECTIVE PERCEPTIONS OF K-12 SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHERS DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC

Katowitz, David, 0000-0002-8681-5387 January 2021 (has links)
In the spring of 2020, nearly every school aged student and K-12 teacher across the United States was forced to participate in remote educational activities online, prompting an unexpected departure from the status quo in public education. This was a result of government mandated social distancing practices, as a mitigation strategy for combating the global pandemic induced by the novel coronavirus. Most school districts were compelled to repurpose their daily practices by rapidly planning to ascertain resources for the implementation of an emergency remote education initiative. These unprecedented events presented many challenges for educators, especially given most had no formal training for conducting online instructional delivery utilizing various technologies. Special education teachers in particular confronted a unique set of challenges when considering how to support the complex needs of diverse learners. This included student support for engagement with access to technology, knowledge of various applied technological pedagogical skills, teacher preparation, technical training, ongoing professional support, interactions with stakeholders, and individual social emotional well-being. The purpose of this study was to determine how special education teachers perceived various aspects of their experiences, when teaching remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic. A survey was designed to measure these perceptions containing aligned items to the domains of the technological pedagogical and content knowledge (TPACK) framework. The COVID-19 Special Education Teacher Survey (C-SETS) was a 42 item questionnaire set on a 5-point Likert scale that contained an additional open-ended question. It was administered online and completed by 280 participants, across 46 states, primarily via a social media platform. While the results demonstrated that special education teachers overall were technically skilled, had increased communication with parents/caregivers, and gained skills for future practices, there was a significantly insufficient level of preparation, a deficit with various pedagogical skills using technology, less collaboration with IEP team members, inconsistent student engagement, varying access to technology, a lack of technical training, ongoing professional development and support, contributing to social emotional stress, anxiety and fatigue. Aspects of these findings were particularly evident in historically under resourced districts and those that did not participate in technology infrastructure initiatives, where an overwhelming majority of the statistically significant differences, with the exception of respondents' level of educational attainment, were attributed to school characteristics. Implications for future teacher preparation, technical training, ongoing professional development, and best practices are presented. Keywords: Special Education, COVID-19, Teacher Preparation, TPACK, Emergency Remote Education, Digital Divide, SEL, Educational Technology, Students with Disabilities, Technical Training, Professional Development, Social Media, Facebook, Pandemic, C-SETS / Special Education
