Agent Ordering and Nogood Repairs in Distributed Constraint Solving

The distributed constraint satisfaction problem is a general formalization used to represent problems in distributed multi-agent systems. A large body of problems in artificial intelligence and computer science can be easily formulated as distributed constraint satisfaction problems. In this thesis we study agent ordering, effects of no-goods, search efficiency and threshold repairing in distributed constraint satisfaction problems and its variants. A summary of contributions is as follows: 1. We present a new algorithm, Dynamic Agent Ordering. A distinctive feature of this algorithm is that it uses the degree of unsatisfiability as a guiding parameter to dynamically determine agent ordering during the search. We show through an empirical study that our algorithm performs better than the existing approaches. In our approach, the independence of agents is guaranteed and agents without neighbouring relationships can run concurrently and asynchronously. (Part of this work was published in the Australian Al Conference (80)). 2. We extend the Dynamic Agent Ordering algorithm by incorporating a novel technique called nogood repairing. This results in a dramatic reduction in the nogoods being stored, and communication costs. In an empirical study, we11 show that this approach outperforms an equivalent static ordering algorithm and a current state-of-the-art technique in terms of execution time, memory usage and communication cost. (Part of this work was published at FLAIRS Conference (81)). Further, we introduce a new algorithm, Over-constrained Dynamic Agent Ordering, that breaks new ground in handling multiple variables per agent in distributed over-constrained satisfaction problems. The algorithm also uses the degree of unsatisfiability as a measure for relaxing constraints, and hence as a way to guide the search toward the best optimal solution(s). By applying our Threshold Repair method, we can solve a distributed constraint satisfaction problem without knowing whether the problem is under- or over-constrained. In an experimental study, we show that the new algorithm compares favourably to an implementation of asynchronous weak commitment search adapted to handle over-constrained problems. Rehabilitation of Precast Deck Panel Bridges

USF completed a research study in 2005, which prioritized the replacement of 85 deteriorating composite precast deck panel bridges. This thesis re-evaluates the original recommendations in the wake of failures of two of these bridges in 2007. Since funding will not allow all identified bridges to be replaced, it was necessary to determine the most effective repair methods. To assess USF’s recommendations, a forensic study was undertaken in which the most current inspection and work program documents on the two failed bridges were reviewed and FDOT personnel interviewed. The best repair procedures were determined by reviewing repair plans, specifications, reports and site visits. The study found the two bridges that failed had been correctly prioritized by USF (No. 1 of 18 and No. 8 of 15). A new, accelerated repair method encompassing complete bay replacement was developed in a pilot project funded by the Florida Department of Transportation.

Regression models in survival analysis and reliability Doctoral thesis Petr Novák Charles University in Prague, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics Abstract: In present work we study methods for modeling the dependence of data from sur- vival and reliability setting on available explanatory variables. The first part of the work compares the properties of the Cox proportional hazards model, Aalen additive model and the Accelerated failure model for survival data. We present methods for testing goodness-of-fit based on counting processes and martingale theory, allowing to identify which model fits the data best. The second part focuses on modeling the lifetime of repairable systems. We study the means of incorporating the history of studied devices into the models, including the influence of corrective repairs and preventive maintenance actions. We demonstrate the introduced methods on real applications and study their properties in various situations on simulated data. 1

A critical analysis of service quality perceptions of vehicle repair and maintenance retailers

The South African motor industry plays a pivotal role in the economy of South Africa and is a leading indicator in economic change. In general, satisfaction of customer service in the motor industry is steadily improving. However, as research has shown, there is still room for improvement within the industry. Knowing what customers expect is a critical step in delivering good quality service to ensure customer retention in the long-term (Zeithaml, Parasuraman & Berry 1990:62-63). Having a good understanding of the value of forming long-term relationships with customers and their evaluation of the quality of the service provided, cannot be underestimated, as failure to actually ask customers what they think of the service could be detrimental in the long-term. Vehicle manufacturers conduct ongoing research to monitor customer perceptions of the quality of the service provided by their vehicle retailers. The information generated from the research findings can be used by manufacturers to improve levels of service where this appears to be lacking, and deal promptly with any customer complaints. Against this background, how vehicle owners judge the quality of the service provided by a franchised vehicle retailer for a repair and maintenance service, will be crucial to understanding how customers form perceptions of service related firms specifically, and in general, even an entire industry. The primary objective of this study is to assess customer perceptions of service quality with a franchised vehicle retailer following a routine repair and maintenance service. The sample consisted of 3 859 respondents who had their vehicles serviced at a GM South Africa franchised vehicle retailer over a one month period. The empirical results of the study revealed that GM South Africa show general positive results in terms of customer service satisfaction, however, there are some areas where additional attention is required.

This work aims to describe and evaluate the selected decisions of the Supreme Administrative Court, primarily in the area of technical improvements and repairs and on the basis of these decisions determine the principles and parameters that should be determinig for taxpayers when they are assessing the technical improvements and repair on fixed assets. The first part is theoretically focused on legislation of technical improvements and repairs. In the following part are described and evaluated selected decisions of the Supreme Administrative Court, on which are subsequently drawn rules and parameters for assessing the boundaries between technical improvement and repair.

Coding Rupture Indicators in Couple Therapy (CRICT): An Observational Coding Scheme

The therapeutic alliance, a construct representing agreement and collaboration on therapy goals, therapy tasks, and the emotional bond between client(s) and therapist, is a robust predictor of therapy outcomes in individual, couple, and family therapy. One way to track the therapeutic alliance is through ruptures and repairs. Ruptures are breaks, tensions, or tears in the therapeutic alliance. Ruptures and repairs influence the therapeutic alliance and consequently therapeutic outcomes. Currently, there is a lack of research addressing ruptures and repairs in couple therapy. The first step in researching alliance ruptures is to have a reliable way to assess alliance ruptures. This study will describe the development of the Coding Rupture Indicators in Couples Therapy (CRICT). The CRICT is an observational coding scheme that measures ruptures in couple therapy. The CRICT was developed through collaboration with researchers in marriage and family therapy, creation of items, adaptation of items from established coding schemes from individual therapy, and input and feedback as the CRICT was used and tested by undergraduates in a coding class. This paper will review foundational research of ruptures and repairs as well as the construction and use of the CRICT coding scheme.

Selective maintenance for multi-state series-parallel systems under economic dependence

Yes / This paper presents a study on selective maintenance for multi-state series-parallel systems with economically dependent components. In the selective maintenance problem, the maintenance manager has to decide which components should receive maintenance activities within a finite break between missions. All the system reliabilities in the next operating mission, the available budget and the maintenance time for each component from its current state to a higher state are taken into account in the optimization models. In addition, the components in series-parallel systems are considered to be economically dependent. Time and cost savings will be achieved when several components are simultaneously repaired in a selective maintenance strategy. As the number of repaired components increases, the saved time and cost will also increase due to the share of setting up between components and another additional reduction amount resulting from the repair of multiple identical components. Different optimization models are derived to find the best maintenance strategy for multi-state series-parallel systems. A genetic algorithm is used to solve the optimization models. The decision makers may select different components to be repaired to different working states based on the maintenance objective, resource availabilities and how dependent the repair time and cost of each component are. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.
