A methodology for the robustness-based evaluation of systems-of-systems alternatives using regret analysis

Poole, Benjamin Hancock 01 July 2008 (has links)
After surveying the state-of-the-art in evaluation of alternatives in the defense acquisition process, a methodology for the evaluation of the robustness of systems-of-systems alternatives was proposed. In the methodology, robustness is defined as the integral of the alternative s regret over the likelihood-weighted plausible scenario space. Surrogate modeling techniques were used to overcome shortcomings associated with conventional regret analysis, including the discrete nature of scenario cases and static results. The new methodology, called Global Regret Analysis, was tested using an example problem based on the air campaign over Iraq in Operation Desert Storm. The results of the testing indicate that the methodology can provide a measure of the robustness of different system-of-systems alternatives against a wide range of possible scenarios. The methodology was then demonstrated on the US Air Force s persistent, precision strike mission. The demonstration showed the ability of Global Regret Analysis to overcome issues associated with using a single or other small number of scenarios to evaluate systems-of-systems alternatives. The methodology was then compared to a variety of existing methods and found to have strength for a wide range of evaluation applications. The possibility of applying Global Regret Analysis for military mission planning and opportunities for future work were also discussed.

Methodology for the conceptual design of a robust and opportunistic system-of-systems

Talley, Diana Noonan 18 November 2008 (has links)
Systems are becoming more complicated, complex, and interrelated. Designers have recognized the need to develop systems from a holistic perspective and design them as Systems-of-Systems (SoS). The design of the SoS, especially in the conceptual design phase, is generally characterized by significant uncertainty. As a result, it is possible for all three types of uncertainty (aleatory, epistemic, and error) and the associated factors of uncertainty (randomness, sampling, confusion, conflict, inaccuracy, ambiguity, vagueness, coarseness, and simplification) to affect the design process. While there are a number of existing SoS design methods, several gaps have been identified: the ability to modeling all of the factors of uncertainty at varying levels of knowledge; the ability to consider both the pernicious and propitious aspects of uncertainty; and, the ability to determine the value of reducing the uncertainty in the design process. While there are numerous uncertainty modeling theories, no one theory can effectively model every kind of uncertainty. This research presents a Hybrid Uncertainty Modeling Method (HUMM) that integrates techniques from the following theories: Probability Theory, Evidence Theory, Fuzzy Set Theory, and Info-Gap theory. The HUMM is capable of modeling all of the different factors of uncertainty and can model the uncertainty for multiple levels of knowledge. In the design process, there are both pernicious and propitious characteristics associated with the uncertainty. Existing design methods typically focus on developing robust designs that are insensitive to the associated uncertainty. These methods do not capitalize on the possibility of maximizing the potential benefit associated with the uncertainty. This research demonstrates how these deficiencies can be overcome by identifying the most robust and opportunistic design. In a design process it is possible that the most robust and opportunistic design will not be selected from the set of potential design alternatives due to the related uncertainty. This research presents a process called the Value of Reducing Uncertainty Method (VRUM) that can determine the value associated with reducing the uncertainty in the design problem before a final decision is made by utilizing two concepts: the Expected Value of Reducing Uncertainty (EVRU) and the Expected Cost to Reducing Uncertainty (ECRU).

Robust and stochastic MPC of uncertain-parameter systems

Fleming, James January 2016 (has links)
Constraint handling is difficult in model predictive control (MPC) of linear differential inclusions (LDIs) and linear parameter varying (LPV) systems. The designer is faced with a choice of using conservative bounds that may give poor performance, or accurate ones that require heavy online computation. This thesis presents a framework to achieve a more flexible trade-off between these two extremes by using a state tube, a sequence of parametrised polyhedra that is guaranteed to contain the future state. To define controllers using a tube, one must ensure that the polyhedra are a sub-set of the region defined by constraints. Necessary and sufficient conditions for these subset relations follow from duality theory, and it is possible to apply these conditions to constrain predicted system states and inputs with only a little conservatism. This leads to a general method of MPC design for uncertain-parameter systems. The resulting controllers have strong theoretical properties, can be implemented using standard algorithms and outperform existing techniques. Crucially, the online optimisation used in the controller is a convex problem with a number of constraints and variables that increases only linearly with the length of the prediction horizon. This holds true for both LDI and LPV systems. For the latter it is possible to optimise over a class of gain-scheduled control policies to improve performance, with a similar linear increase in problem size. The framework extends to stochastic LDIs with chance constraints, for which there are efficient suboptimal methods using online sampling. Sample approximations of chance constraint-admissible sets are generally not positively invariant, which motivates the novel concept of ‘sample-admissible' sets with this property to ensure recursive feasibility when using sampling methods. The thesis concludes by introducing a simple, convex alternative to chance-constrained MPC that applies a robust bound to the time average of constraint violations in closed-loop.

Filtragem e controle recursivos robustos aplicados em um pêndulo invertido / Robust recursive filter and control applied to an inverted pendulum

Felix Mauricio Escalante Ortega 21 July 2016 (has links)
The study of stability and performance in control systems is a relevant topic in systems theory. When uncertainties are considered in the model of the plant, there is a greater difficulty in ensuring an appropriate performance level of the dynamic system, plus, the stability could be compromised as well. In this dissertation a robust linear quadratic regulator and a robust Kalman filter are used in a unified manner to deal with uncertain dynamic systems in real time. The selected case study is the inverted pendulum. Its main control challenges found in the literature will be considered: stabilization, tracking and catching swing-up. The used algorithms are motivated by the fact that stochastic problems can be solved through deterministic arguments based on the concepts of penalty function and regularized least-squares. Thus, it is possible to obtain an optimal performance for the maximum acceptable uncertainty. The performance analysis of the robust control is carried out by practical experiments including uncertainties in the plant, noise in the sensors and disturbance in the pendulum control signal.

Validation and robust optimization of deep drawing process by simulation in the presence of uncertainty / Validation et optimisation robuste d’un procédé d’emboutissage par simulation en contexte incertain

Nguyen, Von Dim 26 February 2015 (has links)
The ultimate objective of this thesis is to evaluate the possibility to validate and optimize a manufacturing process using numerical simulation and taking into account the irreducible uncertainties in the process, materials and geometry of manufactured product. Taking into account the uncertainties requires quantifying the effects of variations of model parameters on the outputs, by propagating these variations via computer simulation to assess their effects on the outputs. In this work, we have proposed a procedure to determine the sensitivity threshold of the numerical model to build numerical Design of Experiments consistent with this threshold. We have also shown that, given the uncertainties in the materials and the geometry of the product, it is possible to optimize certain process parameters to control the effects of uncertainties on the dimensional and morphological variations of the product. For this, we have proposed an optimization procedure based on NSGA-II algorithm and a meta-modeling of the process. The application for deep drawing of a U-shaped sheet metal part, springback included shows that it is a robust design problem for which we get all the compromise between the deviation from the mean and standard deviation of a "performance" depending on the process correctly chosen. Finally, the analysis of these results allows us to quantify the relationship between the notion of robustness of an optimized solution of the process and criteria for measuring the quality of the product

Intelligent Gripper

Östberg, Micael, Norgren, Mikael January 2013 (has links)
The human hand is a great generic gripper as it can grasp objects of unknown shapes, weights and surfaces. Most robotic grippers in today's industry have to be custom made and tuned for each application by engineers, thus many man hours are required to get the desired behavior and repeatability. To be able to adapt some of the capabilities of the human hand into robust industrial robotic grippers would enhance their usability and ease the tuning by engineers once installed. This thesis discusses the development of a robust intelligent gripper for industrial use, based on piezo sensors which have the ability to both sense slippage and detect objects. First, an experimental sensor prototype was developed successfully using an amplification circuit and algorithms implemented in LabView. Secondly, a final prototype containing a signal board, an FPGA board, a simple gripper with linear units and more robust sensor modules where developed. The thesis further discusses which parts of the intelligent gripper that have been successfully implemented within the project time frame and which parts that needs to be further implemented, tested and improved.

Commande robuste de machines à réluctance variable pour la traction de véhicules électriques / robust control of a switched reluctance machine intended for electrical vehicle Propulsion.

Ouddah, Nadir 23 September 2015 (has links)
The switched reluctance motor (SRM) is gaining much interest in electric vehicle applications. It includes robustness to harsh operational conditions, rugged structure, fault tolerant operation and a wide range of speed. However, due to the highly nonlinear electromagnetic characteristic, wear and tear of motor, manufacturing tolerances and parameters drift during operation, classical control strategies do not ensure high dynamical performance and robustness under various operating conditions in electric vehicle environment. In this context, the first purpose of this thesis is to propose robust control strategies of the SRM taking into account the constraints imposed by electric vehicle applications. To achieve this objective, a cascade control scheme is adopted; it consists of an outer speed loop and an inner current loop. Controllers design aims are fixed through specifications formulated in frequency domain, robust and adaptive controllers of speed and currents are thus synthesized based on H- infini and LPV/H- infini control approaches. Feasibility of these controllers is also an important criterion in electric vehicles applications where embedded computing power is very limited. This criterion is taken into account in this thesis by using fixed order controller synthesis approaches. The performances of these controllers are analyzed and compared with the performances of standard H- infini controllers through an experimental evaluation and a robustness analysis is performed using the concept of the Singular Structured Value, i.e. the μ-analysis. The second objective of this thesis is to assess the interest of the sensorless control of SRM. Robust observers based on second order sliding mode (SMO2) and Kalman filtering techniques (EKF) are designed to estimate the mechanical states of SRM. Performances and robustness of these observers are then compared experimentally in perspective of electric vehicle application.

Design Of Robust Power System Damping Controllers For Interconnected Power Systems

Ajit Kumar, * 12 1900 (has links) (PDF)
Small signal oscillation has been always a major concern in the operation of power systems. In a generator, the electromechanical coupling between the rotor and the rest of the system causes it to behave in a manner similar to a spring mass damper system, which exhibits an oscillatory behaviour around the equilibrium state, following any disturbance, such as sudden change in loads, fluctuations in the output of turbine and faults etc. The use of fast acting high gain AVRs and evolution of large interconnected power systems with transfer of bulk power across weak transmission links have further aggravated the problem of these low frequency oscillations. Small oscillations in the range of about 0.1Hz to 3.5Hz can persist for long periods, limiting the power transfer capability of the transmission lines. Power System Stabilizers (PSS’s) were developed as auxiliary controllers on the generators excitation system to produce additional damping by modulating the generator excitation voltage. Designing effective PSS for all operating conditions specially in large interconnected power systems still remains a difficult and challenging task. The conventionally designed Power System Stabilizer (CPSS) is the most cost-effective electromechanical damping controller till date. However, continual changes in the operating condition and network parameters in large systems result in corresponding large changes in system dynamics. This constantly changing nature of power system makes the design of CPSS a difficult task. The design and tuning of PSS for robust operation is a laborious process. The existing PSS design techniques require considerable expertise, the complete system information and extensive eigenvalue calculations which increases the computational burden as the system size increases. This thesis proposes a method for designing robust power system damping controllers that ensures a minimum robustness under model uncertainties. The minimum performance required for the PSS is set a priori and accomplished over a range of operating conditions. A generalized robust controller design methodology has been first implemented on a Single Machine Infinite Bus (SMIB) power system model. The robust controller places the closed loop rotor modes of the system to the desire location while keeping the electrical modes intact. Unlike conventional lead/lag PSS design, the proposed PSS design is based on pole assignment technique which takes into account of various model uncertainties. For the proposed stabilizer design in a multi-machine systems a new decentralized method has been used which requires system data only upto secondary bus of the unit transformer in a generating station. The proposed robust controller design based on modified Nevanlinna-Pick theory has been designed and tested extensively on SMIB and multi-machine systems to establish the efficacy of the controller in damping small signal oscillations. The thesis is organized in four chapters as follows. The first chapter discusses the basic concepts related to the rotor angle stability in power system. The conventional and other methods of countering this instability by power system stabilizers have been described. The relative merits of the various stabilization techniques have been discussed. The scope of present work, i.e design of decentralized robust power system controllers has been defined. In second chapter a modified robust power system stabilizer for SMIB system is developed. It has been shown that under specific conditions the modified Nevanlinna-Pick theory can also be applied for designing damping controllers in system with lightly damped rotor modes. Third chapter proposes a decentralized approach based on modified Nevanlinna-Pick theory for designing a power system stabilizer for interconnected power systems. The performance of the controller which is not based on external system information has been investigated on three widely used multi-machine test systems to established its efficacy in damping out low frequency oscillations. The fourth chapter gives a brief summary of the work done and also includes a section on the scope of future work relating to design of power system stabilizers.
