Rock ‘n’ Roll Took Me There: Its Effects Upon Individual and Communal Religious Experience

Wood, Matthew January 2013 (has links)
From the claims of punk rocker GG Allin aiming to shed his own blood for Rock ‘n’ Roll to the religiously tinted narratives of Bruce Springsteen we come to find artists using religious references to color their artistic medium. A question arises: Could these utterances and narratives show a deeper meaning behind Rock ‘n’ Roll such that it can give individuals a way to obtain religious experience? This thesis aims at arguing for the ability of Rock ‘n’ Roll as having a way to incite feelings of religious experience and communitas. Through the usage of auto-ethnography coupled with subsidiary sources from academic to pop culture writers this thesis will investigate if such a creative form helps to enable individuals to experience transcendence and feelings of community while immersed in Rock ‘n’ Roll.

Utopia, dystopia and youth in Brazilian rock n roll of the 1980s

Sevillano, Daniel Cantinelli 02 May 2016 (has links)
Using lyrics of songs produced from 1981 to 1989, I tried to analyze the role Brazilian rock n roll had as an element of manifestation of youngsters who had grown up during the 1964 dictatorship. I used the concepts of utopia and dystopia to understand in which way these lyrics, at the same time, served as a representation of the understanding of these youngsters of their historical moment and as an instrument of criticism of the economic and social reality that surrounded them. More than just a cultural reflex of their period, these lyrics demonstrated the ideological contradiction of their time, in which utopia regarding a better society was denied by dystopia that could be found on daily economic and social relations. That same contradiction was observed on the relation between art and market, criticized by many bands, but necessary for the dissemination of their songs among their listeners. It is important to say that the Brazilian punk movement had a fundamental role for the Brazilian rock bands of the 1980s, since it showed it was possible to make songs for and by the youngsters that were living the transition from dictatorship to democracy.

Ozório, Elisângela Maria 12 May 2011 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 Elisangela Maria Ozorio.pdf: 998959 bytes, checksum: 8abbf9d81395338f98466e306cf0d73a (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-05-12 / This dissertation is based on the result of reflexions obtained during the research about poetry manifestation on Brazilian music. Among the diverse poetic movements present in songbooks of our country, the one who is the main poet-singer is Renato Russo. Such selection did not happen in a misunderstanding way, but from readings, that demonstrated that the poetry is an art not prisoner to paper, or writing, but to language form, established in sound and metaphoric meaning of material-word. Therefore, writers and theorists, like Paul Zumthor, Octavio Paz, Paul Valéry and Décio Pignatari, integrated dissertation readings, and guided all the research as well. In Paul Zumthor‟s works, the meeting of oral poetry indicated that rock and roll is a poetic manifestation that recovers the vocalized poetry from primitive man. The view that, the dissertation started with the attempt to understand of the musical gender as a poetic and performative language, that rummages, above all, the resistence, the revolution and the liberation of human being from ethical and moral concepts of (post)modern society. In Brazil, the rock poetry becomes more expressive when it receives poetic lyrics that, linked to abrupt achords from musical style, they (re)create and present the reality of the big urban centers, exploring the two faces of: concrete reality and, hence, repetitive, discouraged, with no major attractions, and the possible reality, challenger, based on Utopian ideals. Thus, this dissertation tried to understand how rock and roll graded in poetic manifestation, and how russiana work, closely tied to music, worked verbal sign, joining poetic word to discordant and decanted melody, that units vocalized poetry with tunelesness and minimalist achords of punk rock, from rock and roll / Esta dissertação tem por base o resultado de reflexões obtidas durante a pesquisa realizada sobre a manifestação da poesia na canção brasileira.

There is consensus in the academic and journalistic works that rock and roll earned their places in the media and recognition of Brazilian music only with the emergence of national bands of the 80s. Thus, this research aims to understand the interference of multiple social agents involved and mobilized in the consolidation of a specific field of music in Brazil, the field of rock: music producers, journalists and bands, in this case “Legião Urbana”. From the analysis of articles published in newspapers, on magazine Bizz and interviews I did with some journalists and the former producer of the Legion, I learned that the positions and the provisions of these agents have built the evaluation judgement of the genre, the artists and production of discs, consolidating spaces for Brazilian rock in the majors and the press.

Of Songwriting and Storytelling as learned through the composition of WAG! The Musical

Shegolev, Aleksey 05 1900 (has links)
WAG! The Musical is Aleksey Shegolev's second full-length musical and it is the first to be performed in an off-Broadway theatre in New York during the summer of 2013. The idea for the plot was inspired by William Shakespeare’s Love’s Labour's Lost, and he and his partner, Julian Silverman, created a story fit for modern times. Shegolev was the composer and lyricist, while Silverman was the book writer. Good storytelling and strong songwriting depends on the characters having a goal to pursue as they overcome the obstacles in their paths. As the story progresses, the level of intensity must always rise to keep the audiences’ attention. Jazz and rock ‘n’ roll were the main musical influences on this piece and we will see how rhythm, harmony and texture played a part in creating WAG!. Musicalizing comedy by using various techniques in composition is another topic that will be explored. Finally, this dissertation will close with Shegolev's experiences during the workshop from dealing with the director to the endless revisions and cuts that had to be made before opening night.
